India: Why Congress had to replace its Jaipur candidate with former Rajasthan cabinet minister
Congress' previous controversial Jaipur candidate Sunil Sharma and new candidate Pratap Singh Khachariyawas
As India gears up for the general elections 2024, there's heightened scrutiny on the candidates being fielded by political partiesand their backgrounds, as well as ideological leanings.
Recently, acontroversy erupted surrounding the candidate Sunil Sharma whom India's main opposition party Congress had earlier nominated forthe Jaipur constituency from India's northern state of Rajasthan.
Though, only in a matter of a day, the Congress swiftly replaced its Lok Sabha election candidate for Jaipur with Pratap Singh Khachariyawas, the controversy gained much attention in India.
This is because of Sharma's purported association with the right-leaning digital platform, Jaipur Dialogues.
Jaipur Dialogues is a platform based in India that conducts discussions on various political topics and organises talks where experts gather to exchange ideas, debate, and analyse critical topics relevant to Indian society and beyond.
As per reports,the platform criticises the Congress party and its stance on various issues. When Congress gave a ticket to Sunil Sharma, an alleged director of the platform, all hell broke loose, even within the Congress party leaders.

It triggered an uproar within the party and drew sharp criticism from senior leaders, including MP Shashi Tharoor.
The decision to replace Sharma came after mounting pressure and objections raised against his candidacy, primarily due to the alleged communal nature of posts made by Jaipur Dialogues.
Senior party figuresvoiced concerns, with Shashi Tharoor even suggesting that Sharma might have experienced a transformative "Pauline epiphany."

Sharma's nomination, announced in the party's third list, sparked discussions and led to doubts regarding his alignment with Congress values. Following deliberation, the party named former Rajasthan minister Pratap Singh Khachariyawas as the new candidate for Jaipur.Khachariyawas is a former state cabinet transport minister.

Amid this political turmoil, Sharma also tried to defend himself and denied direct involvement with Jaipur Dialogues' management.
He clarified that while he participated in panel discussions hosted by the platform, he maintained no ties.

With elections looming in India, the Congress party is trying to consolidate its support base and present a united front against political opponents, especially the ruling BJP led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
