Newcastle shrugged off an injury crisis to beat Manchester United 1-0 on Saturday thanks to Anthony Gordon's second-half winner.

Victory takes Eddie Howe's men above United into fifth in the Premier League table and was the very least the home side deserved for a dominant display that should have been rewarded with more goals.

Gordon's solitary strike proved enough as he slotted in Kieran Trippier's cross in 55th minute.

But the three points came at a cost for Newcastle as goalkeeper Nick Pope hobbled off late on to add to their injury woes.

The Magpies were without 11 first-team players, yet were utterly dominant for the first hour against a United side that are yet to register a win against a side in the top nine of the Premier League table this season.

"We are well aware of our situation but the players have responded again," said Howe.

"I couldn't be happier with the players tonight, I thought we gave a really good display. The character and effort levels have been of the highest level."

Andre Onana was in the spotlight after his two glaring errors cost Erik ten Hag's men in a 3-3 draw at Galatasaray in midweek that could prove fatal to their chances of progression in the Champions League.

But the Cameroonian made an important early save to deny Miguel Almiron finding the far corner.

Newcastle also suffered Champions League disappointment in midweek as a controversial stoppage-time penalty denied them a famous victory at Paris Saint-Germain.

Howe's lack of options meant he was forced to name the same side for a third consecutive game with 17-year-old Lewis Miley starting in midfield.

But there was no sign of fatigue from the home side as United could not cope with Newcastle's energy on and off the ball.

"It definitely makes the result more satisfying that we pulled through with the same team," said Gordon.

"It's not just the lads that are injured, the ones that are playing have kicks and bruises...I'm limping . It's so satisfying because we know how hard we work for each other, so to get the win today is massive."

Alexander Isak's effort was deflected inches wide by Harry Maguire before Trippier's free-kick came back off the underside of the bar as Newcastle were unfortunate not to make their dominance count before half-time.

However, the deadlock was finally broken when Trippier was played in down the right and he picked out Gordon to tap home his sixth goal of the season at the far post.

Ten Hag finally responded only after falling behind as the ineffectual Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial were replaced by Rasmus Hojlund and Antony.

Yet those changes elicited little response from the visitors as United slumped to a sixth Premier League defeat of the season.

"All over you have to say Newcastle deserved to win," conceded Ten Hag.

"We will talk tomorrow with the team about it and move on to Wednesday (against Chelsea)."

The closest United came to levelling was when Fabian Schar blocked Sergio Reguilon's goalbound volley.

But that incident came with a cost for Newcastle as goalkeeper Pope jolted his shoulder in an attempt to save the Spaniard's shot.

United finally showed some urgency for the closing stages plus nine minutes of added time for Pope's injury and did have the ball in the net.

However, Maguire was clearly offside as he deflected in Antony's effort and Newcastle held on to close to within two points of the top four.

Ballon d'Or winner Aitana Bonmati and Alexia Putellas both scored twice as Barcelona began their defence of the Women's Champions League title on Tuesday with a comprehensive 5-0 victory over Benfica, while a ruthless Lyon hit nine against Slavia Prague. Barcelona are aiming to win the Champions League for the third time in four seasons and their strength in depth was summed up by the presence of six players in their starting line-up who played in August's World Cup final in Sydney, when Spain beat England 1-0.

A crowd of fewer than 5,000 watched Putellas, who was a substitute in the World Cup final after missing almost all of last season due to a serious knee injury, head in the opener with quarter of an hour played. Putellas then followed up to make it 2-0 on the line when a header by Esmee Brugts beat the Portuguese side's goalkeeper, and Bonmati got the third with a composed finish just before the interval.

Putellas was replaced at the break and Bonmati then netted again seven minutes after the restart having been set up by Caroline Graham Hansen. Nigeria's Asisat Oshoala wrapped up a convincing victory by scoring with an overhead kick just seconds after coming on as a substitute.

"The motivation for this club is to arrive in the Champions League final every year," Barcelona's England midfielder Keira Walsh told DAZN. "If you look at the mentality of these girls, that's what I saw when I came in here. "It was always, constantly being at the top in training every single day. It's so competitive and that speaks for itself."

Also in Group A, Eintracht Frankfurt won 2-1 away to Rosengard of Sweden, with captain Tanja Pawollek opening the scoring before Barbara Dunst netted the second for the Germans, who have won the competition four times. Captain Olivia Schough pulled a goal back for Rosengard, the Swedish champions.

Lyon, the record eight-time Champions League winners, are expected to make short work of Group B and they showed no mercy to their hosts in the Czech Republic. France star Kadidiatou Diani, a close-season signing from Paris Saint-Germain, netted twice for Lyon while 2018 Ballon d'Or winner Ada Hegerberg scored a penalty in the second half.

The Norwegian is the Champions League's all-time top scorer and that was her 60th goal in the competition. There was also a brace for Canadian defender Vanessa Gilles, with Sara Daebritz, Danielle van de Donk, Eugenie Le Sommer and substitute Amel Majri getting their other goals.

Seen as one of the main threats to Barcelona's hopes of retaining the trophy, Lyon's next game will be at home to the Austrian side St Poelten. "If everything goes the way we want it to go, we can go far in every competition," said the Lyon coach, Sonia Bompastor.

St Poelten were beaten 2-1 at home by Brann of Norway on Tuesday, with US-born Icelandic international defender Natasha Anasi scoring the winner for the visitors. The other groups get underway on Wednesday, when English champions Chelsea travel to play Real Madrid in Group D. Chelsea boss Emma Hayes was on Tuesday confirmed as the next coach of the United States, a position she will take up after this season.

Colombia said Friday the ELN guerrilla group will release the father of Liverpool footballer Luis Diaz, whom it abducted five days ago as it engaged in peace talks with Bogota.&nbsp;Interior Minister Luis Fernando Velasco told reporters that ELN representatives at the negotiations had indicated to government counterparts "that he will be released."

He added that "a safe area will have to be agreed" upon for the handover to happen. The Liverpool striker's mother, Cilenis Marulanda, was rescued hours after the pair were abducted in their home town of Barrancas near the Venezuelan border on Saturday, but his father, Luis Manuel Diaz, has been missing ever since, sparking a massive search.

On Thursday, the government said a unit of the ELN, or National Liberation Army, had taken the older Diaz, and demanded his immediate release. The ELN and the government of leftist President Gustavo Petro are in the midst of peace negotiations and a six-month ceasefire, which entered into force in August.

The president Friday expressed his "deepest rejection not only of the kidnapping of Luis' father, but also... that it (the ELN) has not yet been able to release him." Petro was in Washington attending an Americas economy summit.

"As time passes, the conditions in which Mr Diaz finds himself are becoming very dangerous" the president added, urging "an immediate effort" to free the hostage. The army said more than 250 soldiers were involved in a search by air and land for Diaz, aged 56, according to local media.

The player "is quite shaken by this situation, he is very close to his father," Carlos Jimenez, a cousin of the elder Diaz told AFP in Barrancas. Real Madrid forwardR has become "unfortunately used to" racism in Spain, his coach Carlo Ancelotti said Saturday. The Brazilian has been repeatedly racially abused over the past two seasons, with Barcelona and La Liga investigating further alleged abuse in Madrid's Clasico win last weekend.

Valencia-based newspaper Super Deporte also ran another front cover this week attacking the forward, saying they were "fed up of Pinochius" -- linking Vinicius with fictional character Pinocchio, whose nose grows with every lie he tells.

Vinicius complained of racist abuse at Valencia's Mestalla stadium in May, earning worldwide support after he faced off with a supporter he said had abused him in the stands.

The 23-year-old testified before a Spanish court on October 5 by videoconference as part of an investigation into the alleged abuse in Valencia. "He's good. I think that he is unfortunately used to this," Ancelotti told a news conference ahead of Madrid's clash with Rayo Vallecano on Sunday at the Santiago Bernabeu.

"He is focused on the game and focused on his work. I don't have to say anything to him in that regard." Vinicius has struggled to hit his best form this season, along with his Brazilian compatriot Rodrygo Goes, but new arrival Jude Bellingham has hit 10 league goals to propel Madrid to the top of the table.

Ancelotti backed Vinicius and Rodrygo, who both signed new contracts with Real Madrid this week to 2027 and 2028 respectively, to find their shooting boots sooner rather than later. "Rodrygo and Vinicius will score more goals through the season, that is obvious," said Ancelotti.

"They will score more than Bellingham and Joselu, about that we have no doubt. "The important thing is that when they aren't, Bellingham and Joselu are there, who have done very well in this first part of the season. But Rodrygo and Vinicius will get back to scoring with no problems, we're not in a hurry."

Bellingham netted both of Madrid's goals in their 2-1 Clasico triumph and has taken the Spanish capital by storm. "For now, he has shown no defects," added Ancelotti.&nbsp;

Also Read: Erik ten Hag accepts responsibility for Manchester United's DREADFUL Champions League run Ancelotti backed Vinicius and Rodrygo, who both signed new contracts with Real Madrid this week to 2027 and 2028 respectively, to find their shooting boots sooner rather than later. But Rodrygo and Vinicius will get back to scoring with no problems, we're not in a hurry." Bellingham netted both of Madrid's goals in their 2-1 Clasico triumph and has taken the Spanish capital by storm. "For now, he has shown no defects," added Ancelotti. "He does not have to improve, at this level the important thing is consistency, above all with a talent like him. "What makes the difference in big players is the consistency that they have to have in matches, and for now he's had it."

Japan named a full-strength squad featuring Brighton's Kaoru Mitoma and Real Sociedad's Takefusa Kubo on Wednesday for the start of their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign against Myanmar and Syria. The Blue Samurai, who lost on penalties to Croatia in the last 16 of last year's World Cup in Qatar, face Myanmar in Osaka on November 16 before taking on Syria on neutral ground in Jeddah five days later.

Coach Hajime Moriyasu picked a 26-man squad packed with European experience and said most of the players could expect to see some action. "There is a chance that we could pick up injuries in these two games so having 26 players should allow us to overcome that," said Moriyasu, whose team have also been drawn alongside North Korea in qualifying Group B.

"I will look at what condition the players are in and potentially play one group of players in the first game and then another group in the second." Arsenal's Takehiro Tomiyasu, Liverpool's Wataru Endo and Celtic pair Kyogo Furuhashi and Daizen Maeda were all named in the squad.

Lazio's Daichi Kamada returns after missing friendly wins over Canada and Tunisia in October. Japan have been in red-hot form since the last World Cup, winning their last six games with 24 goals scored and just five conceded.

That run included convincing away wins over Turkey and Germany, whose coach Hansi Flick lost his job after Japan beat his side 4-1. Moriyasu is keen to take that momentum into the World Cup qualifiers and wants to see his team continue improving. "We want to take six points from these two games and we will prepare as best we can to do so," he said. Antoine&nbsp;Griezmann&nbsp;and Alvaro&nbsp;Morata&nbsp;struck twice each as&nbsp;Atletico&nbsp;Madrid hammered ragged&nbsp;10-man&nbsp;Celtic&nbsp;6-0 on Tuesday to move top of their Champions League group. Diego Simeone's side took an early lead through&nbsp;Griezmann&nbsp;but were struggling until&nbsp;Celtic&nbsp;forward Daizen Maeda was dismissed midway through the first half for a high foot.

Morata&nbsp;added a second before the break and&nbsp;Atletico&nbsp;racked&nbsp;up&nbsp;the goals in the second half, with both forwards netting again and Samuel Lino and Saul Niguez also on target. Atletico's emphatic win leaves them with eight points, one ahead of Lazio, second, and two ahead of former group leaders Feyenoord, while&nbsp;Celtic&nbsp;are last with only one. "The team didn't lower its rhythm of play, they were always looking for more," a pleased Simeone told Movistar.

"It's a crunch moment for everyone (in the group), it will be tricky until the end." The&nbsp;Atletico&nbsp;coach lavished praise on key player&nbsp;Griezmann, who is enjoying one of the best spells of his career. Griezmann&nbsp;controversially left&nbsp;Atletico&nbsp;for Barcelona in 2019 but returned on loan in 2021 before signing permanently once more.

"When some didn't agree with his return, I was convinced that he was born to play at&nbsp;Atletico&nbsp;Madrid," Simeone told reporters. "He turned this situation around ... I'm lucky to have a player like&nbsp;Griezmann."I have no doubt that with what he's got left to go at&nbsp;Atletico, he will be one of the team's best ever players." Atletico&nbsp;bounced back strongly from a disappointing defeat at La Liga minnows Las Palmas on Friday to leave Brendan Rodgers' side on the brink of elimination and record their 16th consecutive home victory across all competitions.

Griezmann&nbsp;struck in the sixth minute, his low effort skidding home with the aid of a deflection off Cameron Carter-Vickers, after&nbsp;Celtic&nbsp;gave him too much time and space on the edge of the box. Celtic&nbsp;winger Luis Palma showed flashes at the other end as his team dominated the ball in the opening 20 minutes.

However the game changed drastically when Japanese international Maeda was sent off for a high foot on Mario Hermoso. Although the referee initially gave a yellow card, Maeda was dismissed after VAR intervention --&nbsp;Celtic's third red card of the competition. "It's hard enough at this level with 11 men, that's two games we've had players sent off,"&nbsp;Celtic&nbsp;captain Callum McGregor&nbsp;told TNT Sports. "(It was) a humbling experience for us."

After that it was one-way traffic at the Metropolitano, although Jan Oblak tipped away an accidental&nbsp;Morata&nbsp;miskick, heading towards his own goal. Atletico&nbsp;doubled their lead just before the break when he headed home after a classy team move, with&nbsp;Griezmann&nbsp;finding Jose Gimenez, who nodded the ball back for&nbsp;Morata.

<h2>Standing ovation&nbsp;</h2>

Joe Hart denied Angel Correa and Gimenez hit the bar with a header as&nbsp;Atletico&nbsp;pushed for the third, which came via an acrobatic finish from&nbsp;Griezmann. The French forward, who was surprisingly withdrawn against Las Palmas with&nbsp;Atletico&nbsp;losing, went off early again, this time to a standing ovation.

Lino added a superb fourth, cutting in from the left and arcing an effort across Hart and into the net, before Correa struck the post.&nbsp;Atletico's fifth followed when&nbsp;Morata&nbsp;lashed home his fifth Champions League goal of the season from the edge of the box, giving the despairing Hart no chance.

Saul got in on the act in the final stages, stabbing home from close range after Lino's attempted strike fell into his path to round off&nbsp;Atletico's sizeable triumph. "Their red card gave us an advantage, but we have to continue like this,"&nbsp;Griezmann&nbsp;told Movistar.

"Respecting our opponent, we tried to play as well as possible and not do silly things like try nutmegs." The French forward, operating in an attacking midfield role against&nbsp;Celtic, said he was open to playing there if the coach wanted him to."I'm learning by watching a lot of football on television -- whatever it takes for the club and for Cholo (Simeone)," added&nbsp;Griezmann.

The Premier League side were leading 1-0 at the Parc des Princes thanks to Alexander Isak's 25th-minute goal, until Polish referee Szymon Marciniak awarded PSG a penalty deep in injury time following a VAR check for a handball by Tino Livramento.

The award appeared harsh, and Kylian Mbappe converted the spot-kick to earn PSG a 1-1 draw that changes the outlook for both clubs going into the final round of matches in Group F.

"In my opinion, it wasn't the right decision," insisted Howe as he spoke to reporters after the game.

"It was a ricochet that when it is slowed down looks totally different to the live event.

"It hits his hand, but I don't think his hand is in an unnatural position. I feel it is a poor decision.

"It is hugely frustrating for us because at that moment you know how little time there is left in the game, but there is nothing we can do about it now."

A win would have taken Newcastle into their final group game at home to AC Milan next month with their fate in their own hands in terms of securing qualification for the last 16.

Instead, the draw leaves them in third place, and PSG will join the already-qualified Borussia Dortmund in going through if they win their last game in Germany.

Newcastle must beat Milan at St James' Park and also hope for a slip-up by PSG on the final matchday.

"I just feel for the players after what they have given and for how they have performed in very difficult circumstances, and what that decision does to the group because now the destiny is not with us," Howe added.

"That is tough to take after being so close to being in that position."

Newcastle's first Champions League campaign in two decades has so far been a story of ups and downs, with a 4-1 win at home to PSG last month being followed by consecutive losses against Dortmund before Tuesday's game.

"You have to look at what the players have given and I can't be deflated by what they have given tonight," said Howe, who was hoping to mark his 46th birthday on Wednesday with a victory.

Asked about his team's European campaign so far he added: "We have been thrown in at the deep end with the group, with high-class opposition, great stadiums and brilliant atmospheres.

"We are desperate to stay in the competition and show a better version of ourselves because I don't think people have seen that yet."

Jamaica shocked Canada 3-2 on Tuesday to reach the semifinals of the CONCACAF Nations League and seal a place at next year's expanded Copa America taking place in the United States. A second-half brace from Shamar Nicholson and a late Bobby Reid penalty handed the Reggae Boyz a stunning second leg upset at Toronto's BMO Field that sent the Jamaicans through on away goals after the tie finished 4-4 on aggregate.

Canada, who won the away leg 2-1 in Kingston on Saturday, had looked to be heading towards the last four after Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies put them 1-0 up on the night, 3-1 on aggregate after 25 minutes. But Jamaica hit back in the second half with Nicholson's shot into the bottom corner making it 1-1 after 62 minutes.

Four minutes later Nicholson made it 2-1 -- and level on aggregate -- sliding home a close-range finish after a sweeping Jamaican counterattack. Yet there was more drama moments later when Ismael Kone headed home an equalizer that left the Canadians ahead on aggregate.

However Canada's relief was short-lived. On 75 minutes Stephen Eustaquio was adjudged to have handled in the area and Bobby Reid stepped up to calmly fire in the penalty that sent Jamaica into the last four.

Jamaica endured a nervous finish after being reduced to 10 men following Demarai Gray's 84th-minute dismissal, but the Reggae Boyz held on to advance. The loss was a shattering blow for Canada, which qualified for the World Cup last year for the first time since the 1986 finals.

Manchester United's Alejandro Garnacho scored a goal with an overhead kick against Everton on November 26 in Premier League, drawing comparisons with United legend Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo. The goal, scored in third minute of the match, has already been described as the 'goal of the season' by United manager Erik Ten Hag.

It had fans reminiscing about Rooney's sensational goal against arch-rivals Manchester City in 2011 as well as Ronaldo's famous bicycle kick effort for Real Madrid in 2018 against Juventus. Have a look at the video below:

Ten Hag, however, thinks it's not fair to compare Garnacho to Rooney or Ronaldo just yet and the youngster has to work very hard for it.

"Don't compare, I don't think it is right," said Ten Hag. "They all have their own identity, but for Garnacho to go that way he has a lot to come, he has to work very hard. You have to do it on a consistent basis and so far he has not."

The manager agreed that the 19-year-old has potential to do amazing things but he has to be consistent.

"But he definitely has high potential to do some amazing things, it's not the first time we saw this. We have already often seen glimpses, but if you want to be a player like Rooney or Ronaldo you have to score 20, 25 goals in the Premier League each season. That's not easy to get, you have to work hard, you have to go in areas where it hurts. So a lot to come. But potential, he has it."

The goal by Garnacho was first of three scored by the United during their 3-0 win. The result also saw them climb up to sixth place on the points table with 24 points after eight wins and five losses in 13 games. Marcus Rashford (56th minute by penalty) and Anthony Martial (72nd minute) were others to score for the United.

Haaland's performance last season also helped the City complete the famous treble of the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League as well.

In the current season, Haaland has played 20 games in all competitions and the goal against Liverpool was his 18th this year. In the Premier League, the striker has 14 goals to his name in 13 appearance so far.

The match against Liverpool, however, ended in a 1-1 draw and ended City's victory run at home. Haaland's goal in the 27th minute gave City the lead which continued for most part of the game. In 80th minute though, Liverpool's Trent Alexander-Arnold scored the equaliser and the scorecard remained undisturbed after that.

With the draw, Manchester City are now second on the points table with 29 points after 13 games with nine wins, two losses and two draws. Arsenal replaced them for the top position after they won their game against Brentford 1-0 on November 25 and took their points tally to 30 - one more than the City in same number of games.

Liverpool, on the other hand, are third on the points table - one point less than City's 29 in same 13 games.

Walter Mazzarri made a winning return as Napoli coach on Saturday with the champions' hard-fought 2-1 victory at Atalanta, while AC Milan held on to third in Serie A after beating Fiorentina 1-0.

Eljif Elmas netted the decisive goal 11 minutes from the end at the Gewiss Stadium in Bergamo after Khvicha Kvaratskhelia's headed opener for the away side on the stroke of half-time was levelled by a similar strike from Ademola Lookman.

North Macedonia midfielder Elmas rolled home the winner from substitute Victor Osimhen's pass following Atalanta goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi's poor clearance, making sure that Napoli stayed fourth.

Mazzarri's team are still seven points behind leaders Inter Milan who travel to Turin on Sunday for the weekend's big match at second-placed Juventus.

"The team dominated all last season, playing some of the best football in Europe with players who were not used to being in that position," Mazzarri told DAZN.

"There was always going to be some drop-off after that."

Mazzarri returned to Napoli last week after Rudi Garcia was sacked, reprising a role he left just over a decade ago after being the man to take southern Italy's biggest club back to the upper echelons of Italian football.

The 62-year-old guided Napoli to the 2012 Italian Cup, beating undefeated league champions Juventus in the final to win the club's first major trophy in over two decades, and to second in Serie A one year later before leaving for Inter Milan.

And he took three points from Saturday's even clash, his team recovering from Lookman's 53rd-minute equaliser and being saved from going behind in the 68th minute when Mario Pasalic's finish was ruled out for Teun Koopmeiners straying offside.

Mazzarri will also be boosted by Osimhen recovering from his hamstring injury in time for Wednesday's Champions League trip to Real Madrid.

Napoli are second in Group C, five points behind leaders Madrid and four ahead of third-placed Braga, who take on Union Berlin, with two games remaining.

"I didn't need to be in charge of Napoli to know that Osimhen is a great striker, I'd already seen him play," said Mazzarri.

"I hope he gets back to his best form back as soon as he can."

<h2>Hernandez sinks Fiorentina</h2>

Napoli were briefly third but Milan moved back above their rivals thanks to Theo Hernandez's penalty in a win in which 15-year-old Francesco Camarda became the youngest ever player to play in Serie A.

France full-back Hernandez calmly slotted home from the spot in first-half stoppage time after being brought down by Fabiano Parisi.

That was the highlight of an underwhelming performance from Milan, who were without suspended Olivier Giroud, Noah Okafor, star man Rafael Leao and others for their first win in five league matches.

Portugal winger Leao will also miss Tuesday's visit of Borussia Dortmund which could be crucial to Milan's Champions League hopes.

A host of absences led to teen attacker Camarda being called up from Milan's youth ranks and brought on with seven minutes remaining, replacing Luka Jovic who moments before missed a golden chance to net his first goal for the club.

And deep in stoppage time Mike Maignan saved the win with a stunning stop to deny Rolando Mandragora just as the Italian looked certain to equalise from inches out.

Maurizio Sarri suggested he could quit Lazio after his team fell 2-1 at the division's bottom team Salernitana, losing thanks to a wonder strike from old boy Antonio Candreva.

Serie A: Walter Mazzarri makes winning return as Napoli coach; Milan go past Fiorentina

Ousmane Dembele scored his first Paris Saint-Germain goal in stunning fashion as the reigning French champions crushed Monaco 5-2 in Ligue 1 on Friday to cement their lead at the top of the table.

Goncalo Ramos opened the scoring early on for PSG but a howler by home goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma gifted Takumi Minamino the equaliser soon after.

However, Kylian Mbappe's penalty against his former club restored PSG's lead and two superb goals in the space of three second-half minutes by Dembele and Vitinha put the game out of sight.

Folarin Balogun pulled another back for Monaco but substitute Randal Kolo Muani put the seal on PSG's win in stoppage time.

Paris have now won seven and drawn one of their last eight Ligue 1 games and this result moved them four points clear of second-placed Nice, who are in action on Sunday. Monaco remain third but are six points adrift of the leaders.

"The most important thing was the attitude shown by the players after the international break," said PSG coach Luis Enrique.

"We had one day's training, for one hour, to prepare for this game."

The result, which was achieved despite captain Marquinhos and teenage midfield prodigy Warren Zaire-Emery both missing out through injury, was a boost for Luis Enrique's team ahead of a crucial home Champions League clash with Newcastle United.

The Qatar-backed side could be at real risk of going out of Europe's elite club competition in the group stage if they fail to win that match on Tuesday.

"Monaco are a team on the same level as us and also aspire to win the league, so it is a good result," added Luis Enrique.

"We are going into a vital game against Newcastle and the best way to do that is to win, and all the better winning in that way."

Marquinhos and Zaire-Emery were both injured on international duty and so there were notably starts for PSG here for Nordi Mukiele at left-back and for Fabian Ruiz in central midfield.

Portugal striker Ramos was preferred to Kolo Muani at centre-forward and he opened the scoring in the 18th minute, pouncing to finish after goalkeeper Philipp Koehn spilled a Dembele shot.

Monaco had squandered a great chance to go ahead before that when the unmarked Soungoutou Magassa failed to beat Donnarumma with a header from point-blank range.

<h2>Donnarumma howler</h2>

The principality side also had a Vanderson goal disallowed for offside but they were gifted an equaliser midway through the first half when Donnarumma played an attempted clearance straight to Minamino and the Japan international pounced to score.

Nevertheless, the Parisians went back in front six minutes before the interval as Magassa caught Dembele in the box, and Mbappe rifled in the resulting penalty for his 14th goal in 12 Ligue 1 appearances this season.

Donnarumma made up for his earlier gaffe with a fine save from Minamino to maintain PSG's lead into half-time, and they ended any doubt about the outcome with two goals in quick succession in the second half.

It was 3-1 on 70 minutes as Dembele showed great agility to control a quickly-taken free-kick sent over the top by Ruiz, and then advanced into the box to finish emphatically past Koehn.

It was his first goal in 16 appearances since signing for PSG from Barcelona in August.

Two minutes after that it was four as Portugal midfielder Vitinha controlled a pass from Mbappe wide on the left and curled a fine strike into the far corner.

Monaco quickly pulled one back when Minamino sent through USA striker Balogun to finish past Donnarumma, but they conceded again in the sixth added minute as a botched Guillermo Maripan clearance fell to Kolo Muani to score.

The defeat is a blow to Monaco's hopes of mounting a title challenge and they have now won just once in four outings.

"It is easy to analyse this game today. We conceded four goals that were for me own goals and at this level that is too much," said Monaco coach Adi Huetter.

"PSG is a top team. When you want to be on top of the table, or in the best three in France, we made too many mistakes."

Also Read: Pakistan all-rounder Imad Wasim announces shock international retirement Folarin Balogun pulled another back for Monaco but substitute Randal Kolo Muani put the seal on PSG's win in stoppage time. "We had one day's training, for one hour, to prepare for this game." The result, which was achieved despite captain Marquinhos and teenage midfield prodigy Warren Zaire-Emery both missing out through injury, was a boost for Luis Enrique's team ahead of a crucial home Champions League clash with Newcastle United. The Qatar-backed side could be at real risk of going out of Europe's elite club competition in the group stage if they fail to win that match on Tuesday. "Monaco are a team on the same level as us and also aspire to win the league, so it is a good result," added Luis Enrique. "We are going into a vital game against Newcastle and the best way to do that is to win, and all the better winning in that way." Marquinhos and Zaire-Emery were both injured on international duty and so there were notably starts for PSG here for Nordi Mukiele at left-back and for Fabian Ruiz in central midfield. Donnarumma howler The principality side also had a Vanderson goal disallowed for offside but they were gifted an equaliser midway through the first half when Donnarumma played an attempted clearance straight to Minamino and the Japan international pounced to score.

“Given the events of the last week, I felt it was important I share with you the thoughts of myself, Sean, and all the staff and players here at Finch Farm as we prepare for the return to Premier League action this weekend."

“Colin’s video message last Friday echoed my views and the sentiment of everybody here at Finch Farm. We are shocked by what we believe is a wholly disproportionate and unjust ruling by the Premier League’s commission."

“We cannot say anything further on the commission’s findings until the conclusion of the appeal process - and the players and manager cannot be drawn on any specifics relating to the commission’s ruling in the media duties they will be fulfilling in the days and weeks ahead,” a statement on the club’s official site read.

<h2>Consequences of points drop</h2>

British Member of Parliament Ian Byrne took Everton football club’s points deduction case into the parliament on Tuesday as the Premier League side continues to fight off-field. To fight the case, Byrne, Labour MP for West Derby laid down an early day motion (EDM) in the House of Commons on Tuesday.

It is understood that Everton will appeal to the Premier League authorities regarding the point-deduction case before the team returns to action on Sunday. The Toffees will host Manchester United at Goodison Park and could find themselves bottom of the league standings if Burnley manage to steal a point against West Ham United on Saturday.

As things stand, Everton are two points of the safety zone with Luton Town on six points now gaining an advantage. Before the drop of points, they were 14th in the league and are well on course to another relegation battle having narrowly avoided drop in the last two seasons.

International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) Chief of Global Football Development Arséne Wenger remarked that timely identification of talents and providing them profound coaching at a young age is essential to grow Indian football. Speaking at a press conference with All India Football Federation (AIFF) President&nbsp;Kalyan Chaubey in Mumbai, Wenger said that developing the sport in India is an exciting and interesting endeavour for the global governing body as he insisted upon finding efficient solutions in consultation with all stakeholders of the game in the nation.

Wenger signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on behalf of FIFA with AIFF to set up the inaugural FIFA-AIFF Talent Academy at the Odisha Football Academy in Bhubaneswar on Tuesday.

“We are convinced that you have to put the best talents against each other together. Football is learned with the difficulties you experience by playing against good players. We want to identify good talents, give them the best coaching, quality competitions, and after that, the final step is to integrate them within the first team,” Wenger said.

Kalyan Chaubey, President, AIFF, touched upon the driving force that the Indian Super League (ISL) and other stakeholders have been towards taking Indian football forward. He opined that the synergy between the AIFF and the ISL has been paramount for the development of the sport and he motivated all authorities to work in cooperation and ensure that Indian football reaches heights so that years later they can be proud of the day this initiative with FIFA was kicked off.

“The All India Football Federation (AIFF) is having a good synergy with the Indian Super League (ISL), the club owners, and all stakeholders of Indian football. We all have been working for the development of football. The AIFF is asking everyone to push together for progress in the same direction. We can take the support of all stakeholders, so that we can feel proud of this day in the future,” Chaubey remarked.

Wenger agreed on the need to work collaboratively, adding, “This is something that we need to do together. We are here to help. We do not want anything. We just want to give from everything that we have learnt from all the countries in the world. The top one percent footballing countries in the world are the ones with better systems of education. There is a huge correlation between the quality of education and the results of the first-team.”

Wenger quipped that there is a need of having 40 such development academies to fulfil the needs of a country the size of India. However, he was convinced that proper solutions could be met with the help of all concerned stakeholders.

“In the last three days, we spoke a lot about the promise from both sides. I feel that we have cooperation here. Ideally we want 40 academies so that nobody misses to detect talent in this country. Of course, we have to find the most efficient solution and hence we need the cooperation of everybody who has potential here, right from the states, the AIFF, from sponsors who want to develop football, that’s why it’s difficult, but at the same time it is very exciting and interesting for us,” Wenger explained.

Several Argentina players went towards the disturbances in an apparent attempt to plead for calm, with goalkeeper Emi Martinez attempting to jump into the seating area at one stage to confront a baton-wielding Brazilian police officer. Argentina's players led by Lionel Messi then returned to their dressing room as the clashes continued, with Messi appearing to say: "We're not playing, we're leaving." The 2022 World Cup winners re-emerged onto the field shortly before 10pm local time and the match kicked off shortly afterwards, roughly 30 minutes later than the scheduled start time.

Argentina beat Brazil in World Cup qualifiers after kick-off delayed due to clash between police and fans

Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann said Tuesday his side have an "unbelievable amount of work to do" six months from hosting Euro 2024 after falling to a 2-0 friendly defeat against Austria in Vienna.

Germany fell behind to a Marcel Sabitzer goal in the first half and then lost Leroy Sane early in the second to a red card, the Bayern Munich winger pushing Austria defender Phillipp Mwene in the face and forcing him to the ground.&nbsp;

Christoph Baumgartner then scored a second for Austria as Nagelsmann's side struggled to fight back with 10 men.&nbsp;

"We're not playing freely. We've an unbelievable amount of work to do in each position," Nagelsmann told German broadcaster ZDF.

"We need to accept the situation but we can't fall into the role of being victims."

Nagelsmann said his side was "a really well-functioning group at training, but it's not transferring onto the pitch".

"We're missing some self-confidence, which is not a surprise when you see the past few months."&nbsp;

Germany have now won just three of 11 games since the four-time World Cup winners' embarrassing group-stage exit in Qatar a year ago.&nbsp;

Captain Ilkay Gundogan lamented his side's "homemade" mistakes, saying things "couldn't be worse" before Euro 2024.

"Doing it this way, we won't be successful," he admitted, adding that his team were lacking cohesion.

"We have to be honest and say it's not only the defence. I said after Turkey (Germany's 3-2 loss last weekend) that defence starts up front, with the way we run and pass, and with our attitude.

"We need to infuse ourselves with some positive energy, with some emotion and defend emotionally -- right now we're doing the opposite."

Defender Mats Hummels, one of the few 2014 World Cup winners remaining in the Germany squad, was confident the team could turn things around before the Euro starts in June.&nbsp;

"It takes a while. We have a bit of time until the Euro. I think we can take massive steps," he said.

"If we work hard, it could be a really good tournament for us."

'We've work to do,' says Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann after defeat vs Austria in friendly

Following a great start to their FIFA World Cup 2026 Qualifiers campaign with a win against Kuwait, Indian men's football registered a heartbreaking 3-0 defeat to Qatar in their second Group A match of the second round at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar on Tuesday.

Mustafa Meshaal (4'), Almoez Ali (47') and Yusuf Abdurisag (86') registered their names on the scoresheet for Qatar. India had a solid phase near the end of the first half but overall they were no match for the quality offered by Asian champions Qatar.&nbsp;

The loss has kept India at the second spot in Group A, with a win and loss each. The loss also ended Blue Tigers' 15-match unbeaten streak at home. Indian team made five changes to their playing XI. Amrinder Singh stepped in as a goalkeeper instead of Gurpreet Singh Sandhu but was put under pressure immediately as a misdirected pass from him landed at Almoez's feet, but the shot by Akram Afif missed the target.

Qatari forwards exploited the Indian defence and got in the lead at the fourth minute. Mustafa Meshaal fired a low shot into the bottom corner to give his side the advantage. However, Qatar could not convert their corners later despite winning so many chances at it and the scoreline stayed intact at 1-0.

After the first half an hour, India started to gain some grip of the match and increased the passes into their box and forwards, including skipper Sunil Chhetri managed to get some shots at scoring the equaliser. Lalengmawia Ralte and Udanta Singh looked extremely confident handling the ball and their deliveries into the box led to an error from Qatar defenders. Anirudh Thapa however could not make the most of this and shot his attempt wide of the goal. This was India's best chance to score in the match.

In the start of the second half, India was put into trouble once again. Afif, who troubled India with his speed throughout the game, had his attempt saved in the 47th minute but netted in the rebound in front of the goal, making the scoreline read 2-0. Qatar dominated the second half and did not allow Indian strikers to make inroads into their box. The lead tripled for visitors in the 86th minute with a header from Yusuf Abdurisag. The Indian side will resume their qualifiers campaign with home and away fixtures against Afghanistan in March before they play Kuwait and Qatar in reverse fixtures later in 2024.

The top two finishers in the group will make it to the FIFA World Cup 2026 AFC qualifiers third round while also earning a direct spot into the 2027 AFC Asian Cup.
