Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez said he will quit his role at the end of the season after the team's title defence was derailed in a remarkable 5-3 defeat by Villarreal on Saturday in La Liga.

After Real Madrid moved two points clear of Girona at the top of the league with a late 2-1 win at Las Palmas, the pressure was firmly on Xavi's defending champions in third.

In a see-saw match Gerard Moreno and Ilias Akhomach put Villarreal two goals ahead before Barcelona battled back.

Ilkay Gundogan and Pedri struck before Eric Bailly headed into his own net to give the hosts the lead.

However Goncalo Guedes fired home in the 84th minute before stoppage-time strikes from Alexander Sorloth and Jose Luis Morales left Barcelona 10 points adrift of rivals Madrid.

"From June 30 I will not continue as Barca coach ... as a Barca fan, I think the club needs a change of dynamic," Xavi told reporters.

"Thinking as a club man, I think the best thing is for me to go ... I will give my all in the four months that are left, I think we can have a good season and I hope the dynamic changes."

Alex Baena and Moreno had goals disallowed for Villarreal before the latter broke the deadlock, finishing well from Sorloth's cut-back.

As the players trudged in for half-time Barcelona were whistled by disgruntled supporters at their temporary home at the Olympic Stadium.

Barca conceded a foolish second goal after a bad Cancelo mistake allowed Akhomach to gallop in, round Inaki Pena and fire home. Then the Catalans fought back.

Gundogan finished superbly from the edge of the box after an hour, Pedri drove home eight minutes later to level and Bailly headed Gundogan's free kick into his own net.

However Barcelona's defence, a far cry from the watertight back-line which led them to the title last season, was pulled apart again.

Sorloth fed winger Guedes, who flashed a strike past Pena and into the far corner.

Barcelona were awarded a penalty in the 90th minute when Santi Comesana blocked Gundogan's cross with his elbow but the referee cancelled it after a VAR review, leaving the hosts furious.

Xavi yelled into a television camera that the decision to revoke the penalty was "a disgrace".

Worse was to come, with Sorloth finishing from close range to put Villarreal ahead and Morales rubbed salt in the wound with a late fifth, with Barcelona in total disarray.

It was Villarreal's first win in five games in all competitions and their coach Marcelino's first ever against Barcelona in 21 matches.

"It's turning out to be a tough season and the fans deserved something like this," said Moreno.

<h2>- 'Motivated bench' -</h2>

Earlier Aurelien Tchouameni's towering header earned Real Madrid a late victory at Las Palmas to send them top.

Las Palmas took the lead through Javier Munoz early in the second half but Madrid came back with Vinicius Junior levelling before substitute Tchouameni's winner, on his 24th birthday.

"I look at the bench and I have chances to change the dynamic," the Italian coach told reporters.

"It's a tool that we have, with such a motivated bench, they bring a lot when they come on."

Madrid were without leading goalscorer Jude Bellingham, suspended.

Promoted Las Palmas, eighth, have exceeded expectations under former Barcelona reserves coach Francisco Garcia Pimienta, and for large periods they gave Madrid as good as they got.

It was a tight clash between the division's best two defences but the stalemate was broken early in the second half.

Munoz finished a neat counter-attack before Vinicius levelled after a fine Eduardo Camavinga pass.

Real coach Carlo Ancelotti, chasing a winner, sent on Turkish attacker Arda Guler for his La Liga debut and match-winner Tchouameni.

The French midfielder netted only his second goal for the club with a superb header from Toni Kroos' corner with six minutes remaining.

Madrid have been taking full advantage of dead ball situations, with this just the latest in a string of goals from corners they have scored this season.

"At set pieces we're very dangerous because we have very good takers and very good finishers," said Ancelotti.

LaLiga: Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez to leave club after ongoing season

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola said he will "sleep a bit better" after his "biggest rival" Jurgen Klopp rocked the football world with his shock decision to leave Liverpool at the end of this season.

Klopp stunned Premier League leaders Liverpool on Friday when he revealed he will step down once the current campaign is over.

The Reds boss has been Guardiola's main competitor for domestic silverware during their time in England.

While Guardiola has largely come out on top in the trophy stakes during City's dynastic era, the Spaniard is well aware of the threat posed by Klopp and his team.

Paying tribute to the German after City's 1-0 win at Tottenham in the FA Cup fourth round on Friday, Guardiola said: "He's an absolutely incredible manager, I don't know him closely but I think he's an incredible person as well.

"I have the feeling that when he leaves at the end of the season, part of us at Manchester City is leaving too. They have been our biggest rival, Liverpool in the last years."

Klopp said he was leaving Liverpool because he no longer has the energy required to manage such a high-profile club after nine years at Anfield.

Although the two have never been close friends during their spell in England, their mutual respect is clear.

Guardiola, 53, can empathise with the 56-year-old over his decision after he walked out on Barcelona for similar reasons in 2012.

"All the managers will (feel tired) when you've done many years, I feel it completely. I felt it at Barcelona so I understand it completely," he said.

Although City have won the last three Premier League titles, their reign is under threat from Klopp again this term.

Liverpool currently sit five points clear of second placed City, who have a game in hand.

The prospect of eventually playing a Liverpool team not managed by Klopp -- one of the few coaches who can match Guardiola's intense competitiveness -- is a pleasant thought for the City boss.

Their last showdown in the Premier League will come on March 9 when City visit Anfield for a crucial clash in the title race.

"He's been my biggest rival so I think he will be missed," he said.

"I am a little bit pleased because without him I will sleep a little bit better the night before we play against Liverpool but I wish him all the best. He doesn't admit but he will be back."

Inaki Williams raced back from Africa to face Barcelona in the Copa del Rey and sent Athletic Bilbao into the semi-finals by scoring a crucial goal in their 4-2 extra-time triumph on Wednesday.

The Ghana forward played on Monday for his country but made it home to help Athletic vanquish the Spanish champions and pile more pressure on their coach Xavi Hernandez.

Athletic struck inside the first minute through Gorka Guruzeta, but Barcelona turned the game around with goals from Robert Lewandowski and 16-year-old starlet Lamine Yamal.

Debutants Tajikistan sealed a place in the knockout rounds of the Asian Cup on Monday with a battling 2-1 win over 10-man Lebanon that included three lovely goals and another two strikes ruled out by VAR.

China's 1-0 loss to hosts Qatar meant Tajikistan went through in second place from Group A on a night of drama.

Before the third and final round of games, holders Qatar were the only team to have scored a goal in the group, and any of the other three had a shot at finishing behind them in second.

In a stadium festooned with their cedar-tree flags, Lebanon took control of the game early, launching repeated attacks but finding no more penetration than they had in their previous two games.

Tajikistan were mostly restricted to shots from outside the box until the stroke of half time, when midfielder Mabatshoev Shervoni slalomed into the Lebanon area, his attempted cross taking a huge deflection off Lebanon's Robert Melki to loop over the wrong-footed goalkeeper and into the net.

But Tajik celebrations were cut short when the referee ruled the goal out for the tightest of offsides.

Their misery was compounded almost immediately after the restart when Bangkok United forward Bassel Jradi arched in a delicious strike from the edge of the area and inside the far post.

But Lebanon soon had a man sent off when a VAR check upgraded Kassem El Zein's yellow card -- for a studs-up, over-the-ball tackle -- to a red.

With a man advantage, Tajikistan camped out in the opposition half, and as the 70th minute approached they once again thought they had scored.

But Alisher Dzhalilov's goal was scratched off, again for a cruelly slender offside.

When their equaliser did finally arrive, there could be no doubt, Parvizdzhon Umarbaev topping Jradi's strike with a curling free kick to bring stunned silence to the Jassim Bin Hamid Stadium.

As things stood the Tajiks were going through in second, but they continued to push for a winner.

No sooner had the fourth official signalled a whopping 16 minutes of added time, than they got it, substitute Nuriddin Khamrokulov flicking a delicate backwards header over goalkeeper Mostafa Matar.

Lebanon's Hilal El-Helwe had a chance to pull one back, at the death, but shot wide as they exited the tournament.

Luis Suarez made a subdued debut alongside former Barcelona team-mate Lionel Messi as Inter Miami kicked off their pre-season tour Friday with a 0-0 draw against El Salvador.

Suarez, who signed for Major League Soccer's Miami last month from Brazilian club Gremio, started in attack alongside Argentine superstar Messi at the Estadio Cuscatlan in San Salvador.

But the 36-year-old Uruguayan forward struggled to find his footing in a low-key start to his career with the Florida franchise.

Suarez, Messi and fellow former Barcelona players Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba were all substituted at half-time with the match scoreless.

Messi came closest to opening the scoring on 36 minutes, latching on to a clever touch from Busquets and rifling a volley towards goal only to be denied by El Salvador goalkeeper Mario Martinez, who also stopped the Argentine's follow-up effort.

Martinez was alert four minutes later also when Alba burst into the box only to see his shot parried away.

El Salvador almost snatched victory in the 83rd minute, but Styven Vasquez's clever header cannoned off the bar.

Friday's match launched a hectic series of pre-season friendlies for Miami as they prepare to kick off the new MLS season against Real Salt Lake on February 21.

Miami play FC Dallas in a friendly on Monday, then head to Saudi Arabia for games against Al-Hilal on January 29.

They face Al-Nassr on February 1 – a game that should see Messi line up against old rival Cristiano Ronaldo once more.

Miami then travel to Asia to play friendlies against a Hong Kong select team on February 4 before taking on Japanese side Vissel Kobe three days later.&nbsp;

The Herons return to the United States for a final pre-season game against Argentine squad Newell's Old Boys on February 15.

Also Read: Premier League: Ivan Toney set for return after betting ban, to captain Brentford against Nottingham Forest Suarez, Messi and fellow former Barcelona players Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba were all substituted at half-time with the match scoreless. Miami then travel to Asia to play friendlies against a Hong Kong select team on February 4 before taking on Japanese side Vissel Kobe three days later. The Herons return to the United States for a final pre-season game against Argentine squad Newell's Old Boys on February 15.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino has called for an automatic forfeit of games for the teams whose fans indulge in racism acts during the play in various leagues such as Italian Serie A, English Premier League (EPL) and Spanish La Liga. He shared the thoughts after two separate incidents of racisms on Saturday (January 20) which included Serie A and English Football League (EFL) or the Championship.

“As well as the three-step process (match stopped, match re-stopped, match abandoned), we have to implement an automatic forfeit for the team whose fans have committed racism and caused the match to be abandoned, as well as worldwide stadium bans and criminal charges for racists,” said Infantino via a FIFA post on X.

“FIFA and football shows full solidarity to victims of racism and any form of discrimination. Once and for all: No to racism! No to any form of discrimination! The events that took place in Udine and Sheffield on Saturday are totally abhorrent and completely unacceptable. The players affected by Saturday’s events have my undivided support. We need ALL the relevant stakeholders to take action, starting with education in schools so that future generations understand that this is not part of football or society,” he added.

In Serie A, AC Milan players walked off the pitch for a brief period of time after their French goalkeeper Mike Maignan alleged that Udinese fans made monkey noises in stands. In EFL, Coventry manager reported that mid-fielder Kasey Palmer was subjected to an racist gesture by a fan in dying moments of the game against Sheffield Wednesday.&nbsp;

For the games, Milan returned to play after five minutes and went on to win the match 3-2. Coventry, on the other hand, were already 2-1 ahead at the time of the incident and the score stayed the same.

Vinicius Junior. scored a first-half hat-trick as Real Madrid beat arch rivals Barcelona to win the Spanish Super Cup 4-1 on Sunday (Jan 14) at Al-Awwal stadium in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Barcelona, who had won the Supercopa last year against Real, were miserable this year, especially in the second half where they didn't record a single shot on the target. Adding more to their misery, Barca were left with only 10 players on the field after Ronald Araújo was shown red card in the 71st minute.

Real started the game full throttle as Vinicius Jr. scored the first for his three goal in the seventh minute followed by another one three minutes later. Barcelona's Robert Lewandowski scored one for the team in 33rd minute to cut the deficit to one goal. Vinicius, however, scored another goal six minutes later in 39th minute to make the score board read 3-1.

Come second half, Barcelona never got going as Real Madrid's Rodrygo scored last goal of the night in 64th minute to make the scoreline 4-1. Real coach Carlo Ancelotti, however, said after the match the result doesn't show how difficult a match it was.

"I didn't expect us to score three so soon, but we took advantage of their high defensive line with an inspired Vinicius tonight," Real Ancelotti told Movistar Plus after the win.

"It was a difficult match, the result seems too much for the way Barcelona played. At 3-1 it was even. At 4-1 they dropped their arms a bit. We are happy," he added.

Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez, on the other hand, conceded that the team played 'their worst game.'

"We have not shown the level required for a match like this," Xavi told in a press conference.

"We played our worst game. We weren't comfortable at any point. Madrid hurt us on the counter. I apologise to the fans because it was hard for us to compete and we showed our worst side."

This was Real Madrid's 13th win in the Spanish Supercopa, one short than Barcelona's record 14 titles.&nbsp;

Inter Milan moved five points clear at the top of Serie A on Saturday after cruising to a 5-1 win at Monza, while last-gasp drama gave Napoli a 2-1 win over Salernitana.

Doubles from Hakan Calhanoglu and Lautaro Martinez and a late strike from Marcus Thuram extended Inter's advantage on Juventus, who host Sassuolo on Tuesday night.

Inter now head to the revamped, four-team Italian Super Cup in Riyadh, where they begin a tough run of fixtures against Lazio on Thursday.

A trip to high-flying Fiorentina will follow at the end of the month before a showdown with Juve at the San Siro, by which time their closest rivals could be top of the pile due to having a game in hand.

Inter don't play what would have been next weekend's home clash with Atalanta until the end of February due to their Super Cup commitments.

However if they continue to play as they did in a blistering display on Saturday they should have little to fear from any opposition.

Calhanoglu put Inter ahead from the penalty spot in the 12th minute after Roberto Gagliardini handled Martinez's header, and the away side were two in front moments later.

A great team move swept Inter from one end of the pitch to the other and ended with Martinez prodding home from close range.

Monza's Matteo Pessina then had a header ruled out for the tightest of offsides in the 29th minute, and Calhanoglu made sure of the points on the hour mark when he stroked home Thuram's neat lay-off.

Pessina did get his goal from the spot nine minutes later but by then the damage was done.

With six minutes remaining Martinez scored from the spot to take his league tally to 18 for the season and four minutes later Thuram capped a perfect evening with a fine individual strike.

<h2>- Napoli relief -</h2>

&nbsp;

Amir Rrahmani's stoppage-time strike earned Napoli a dramatic win over regional rivals Salernitana which ended the ailing champions' winless run at four matches.

Kosovo captain Rrahmani capitalised on dreadful defending at a free-kick to poke home the winner and turn jeers into cheers at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.

Walter Mazzarri's side moved up to sixth in Italy's top flight after the win, 20 points behind Inter.

The hosts came back from going behind in the 29th minute to a stunning Antonio Candreva strike, with Matteo Politano pulling Napoli level from the penalty spot at the end of the first half before Rrahmani brought the house down with his late winner.

"It's not an easy situation, because going from being Italian champions to having the kind of results we're having this season is very hard," said Rrahmani to DAZN.

"I'm happy with the goal. I hope I can be as lucky again in the future."

Napoli are two points behind fourth-placed Fiorentina, who sit in the final Champions League spot and host Udinese on Sunday.

"It was a real team win, a hallmark of this team last season but something that we haven't seen too much of this year," said Mazzarri.

Saturday's win brought euphoria to home fans who have watched a side which cruised to last season's historic Scudetto put up a weak title defence.

But the three points came with a large slice of good fortune as Politano's leveller came after a soft foul from Federico Fazio on Giovanni Simeone, given after a VAR check.

Supporters were resigned to a draw when Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who has struggled this term, shot a great chance straight at Salernitana goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa with the clock ticking down.

Moments later Ochoa helped hand Napoli the win when he clattered into Fazio while trying to collect Giacomo Raspadori's free-kick, the ball then squirmed to Rrahmani who rammed home the decisive goal.

'Don't need anything,' says PSG coach Luis Enrique on signing new players amid injuries

Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez said Wednesday he hopes a potential Spanish Super Cup triumph can create an important turning point in his team's season again.

The Spanish champions are languishing in third place in La Liga, seven points behind leaders Real Madrid and Girona at the halfway point.

Barcelona face Osasuna in Riyadh in the Spanish Super Cup semi-finals on Thursday, ahead of a potential showdown against Real Madrid or Atletico Madrid in Sunday's final.

Barcelona, record 14-time Spanish Super Cup winners, lifted the trophy last season in Saudi Arabia, their first silverware under Xavi, and it was a key moment to prove his project was progressing.

"I hope (it can be a turning point), I hope we find consistency," Xavi told a news conference.

"We respect Osasuna a lot, evidently we are favourites -- it's win or lose, a knock-out game, we need to show that we want to be in the final.

"Last year it was perfect for us, it gave us confidence and stability."

After returning to Spain last season the Catalans went on to win 10 of their next 11 league games on their way towards lifting La Liga.

Defender Ronald Araujo also believes winning the Super Cup again could prove important in Barca's bid to turn around a disappointing campaign so far.

"Last year the Super Cup was a turning point, we want it to be the same this year -- it's a trophy and we want to win it," said the Uruguayan centre-back.

Defensively the Catalans have struggled this year which is in stark contrast to last season's Liga success which was based on their superb back-line.

Barcelona have conceded 22 goals in La Liga at the halfway stage of the season after shipping only 20 in the whole of the 2022-23 campaign.

"(We need) to be more effective in both boxes, in defence and attack, to concede fewer goals," continued Araujo.

"We're working to correct errors in defence, it's something that helped us a lot last season, letting in few goals."

Araujo has been linked with a transfer to German champions Bayern Munich in recent weeks in media reports, but said he was only thinking about Barcelona.

"Rumours always come out in transfer windows, I'm focused on Barca and I prove it every time I put this shirt on," said the 24-year-old.

<h2>'Something historic'</h2>

Osasuna coach Jagoba Arrasate was excited for his club's first appearance in the competition.

"It's something historic for the club," said the coach.

"It's a short competition with tough opponents, but we hope that we can win tomorrow."

Arrasate said even though Barcelona were not at their best, Xavi's side had to be respected.

"In these games they grow, and they are the reigning champions," he added.

"I want to win tomorrow and to win we have to see the best Osasuna possible, to try and touch perfection, to make Barcelona uncomfortable.

"Let's think that tomorrow could be a magical night."

Both Arrasate and Osasuna defender David Garcia said they were disappointed many of the club's fans could not make the trip out to Saudi Arabia.

"It's what upsets me the most, not to be able to have all the 'Rojillos' in the stands," said Garcia.

"I hope to be able to earn them a victory and to be able to compete in the final."

"Last year it was perfect for us, it gave us confidence and stability." After returning to Spain last season the Catalans went on to win 10 of their next 11 league games on their way towards lifting La Liga. "We're working to correct errors in defence, it's something that helped us a lot last season, letting in few goals." Araujo has been linked with a transfer to German champions Bayern Munich in recent weeks in media reports, but said he was only thinking about Barcelona. "Rumours always come out in transfer windows, I'm focused on Barca and I prove it every time I put this shirt on," said the 24-year-old. 'Something historic' Osasuna coach Jagoba Arrasate was excited for his club's first appearance in the competition. "It's something historic for the club," said the coach. "It's a short competition with tough opponents, but we hope that we can win tomorrow." Arrasate said even though Barcelona were not at their best, Xavi's side had to be respected. "In these games they grow, and they are the reigning champions," he added. "I want to win tomorrow and to win we have to see the best Osasuna possible, to try and touch perfection, to make Barcelona uncomfortable. "Let's think that tomorrow could be a magical night." Both Arrasate and Osasuna defender David Garcia said they were disappointed many of the club's fans could not make the trip out to Saudi Arabia. "It's what upsets me the most, not to be able to have all the 'Rojillos' in the stands," said Garcia. "I hope to be able to earn them a victory and to be able to compete in the final." Real Madrid face Atletico on Wednesday in the first Super Cup semi-final.

Barcelona coach Xavi Hernandez hopes for change in fortune in Super Cup semi-final

Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said Tuesday he was unhappy to be pitted against fierce city rivals Atletico Madrid three times in under a month.

Los Blancos take on Diego Simeone's Atletico on Wednesday in Riyadh in the Spanish Super Cup semi-final, again next week in the Copa del Rey last 16, and also in La Liga in early February.

Atletico are the only team to beat Real Madrid this season in all competitions, with the Rojiblancos earning a 3-1 league win in September in the derby at their Metropolitano stadium.

"The calendar is what it is, we have to face Atletico Madrid again, we have to play this game," Ancelotti told a news conference.

"I don't like facing Atletico because they are one of the best teams, it's always tough to play them -- but Atletico will be thinking the same thing."

"We are two strong teams and it will be complicated, but I think the fans will enjoy these fixtures, both Real Madrid and Atletico fans."

Ancelotti said Atletico's victory over Madrid this season damaged his side, although they have since gone on a 19-match unbeaten run.

"The truth is the last game we played (against Atletico) did us a lot of damage," continued Ancelotti.

"I think tomorrow we can put a better version of ourselves out there than in our first match against Atletico Madrid."

Atletico had won just one of their previous 14 La Liga matches against Real Madrid before this season's victory.

Real Madrid also beat Atletico in the 2020 Spanish Super Cup final, the first to be played in Saudi Arabia.

Madrid midfielder Fede Valverde was dismissed for hacking down Atletico striker Alvaro Morata as he ran through on goal deep in extra-time, allowing his team to get to penalties, where they triumphed.

"I'd do it (again), if it's for the team," Valverde told reporters.

"If we're losing 3-0 then there's no sense in it, in that final we were battling it out, it was hard-fought... if that was the scoreline again, I'd do it again."

<h2>'Worn down mentally'</h2>

Atletico Madrid midfielder Rodrigo de Paul said he was happy to face off with Los Blancos in the derby triple-header despite the toll it takes on the players.

"I've always enjoyed playing the best teams, and Madrid are one of them," said De Paul.

"Obviously this fixture leads to being worn down mentally and physically a lot, but (Madrid derbies) always have their negatives and positives -- I'll appreciate being able to face one of the best teams."

Simeone said Atletico's triumph over Madrid in September had no bearing on the clash at the Al-Awwal stadium.

"Madrid had some players who couldn't play, and they will be there tomorrow ... that was another game, in another moment," said Simeone.

"We will prepare to play this one in the way we think is apt for this moment."

Key Madrid forward Vinicius Junior was out injured for the defeat by Atletico but has returned from another thigh problem in recent weeks and is poised to start Wednesday.

The former Chinese national football team coach has made a televised confession in which he admitted to paying hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes to secure the top job, as well as involvement in match-fixing.

Chinese football has been in the grip of a major anti-corruption campaign that has seen numerous leading figures investigated or charged.

Li Tie, a former Everton midfielder who served as the national team's head coach, was placed under investigation in 2022, accused by authorities of&nbsp;"serious violations of the law".

No detailed information on the case has been available until his confession on Tuesday night, part of an anti-graft documentary aired on state broadcaster CCTV.

CCTV regularly airs confessions by criminal suspects, including former officials, before they have appeared in court -- a practice widely condemned by rights groups.

In the programme, Li said he had arranged nearly $421,000 in bribes to secure the head coach position -- and to have helped fix matches when he was a club coach.

"I'm very sorry. I should have kept my head to the ground and followed the right path," the 46-year-old said.&nbsp;

"There were certain things that at the time were common practices in football," he added.&nbsp;

<h2>Paying for the job</h2>

When he took the national coach job in January 2020, Li declared he had achieved one of his "biggest dreams".

But Tuesday's documentary painted a less wholesome picture.&nbsp;

It said Li had asked Wuhan Zall Football Club -- where he then worked as coach -- to intervene on his behalf with the Chinese Football Association (CFA), promising to return the favour.

The club paid two million yuan ($281,000) in bribes to Chen Xuyuan, then president of the CFA and is now also subject to a corruption investigation.&nbsp;

Li also said he gave one million yuan from his own pocket to the secretary-general of the CFA.

Following his appointment, four Wuhan Zall footballers were appointed to the national team -- players who were not qualified to play "at that level", according to the club president, who was interviewed in the documentary.&nbsp;

China eventually failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, leading to Li quitting in 2021.

The national anti-corruption agency launched an investigation into him at the end of 2022.&nbsp;

Around 10 senior leaders and executives of the CFA have also been brought down since, including former president Chen.&nbsp;

Chen was indicted in September for corruption, confessing in the TV documentary to having accepted large sums from those wishing to get in his good graces.

Chinese leader Xi Jinping has described himself as a football fan and said he dreams of China hosting and winning a World Cup one day.

But ambitions of developing the men's team into an international powerhouse have not come to fruition.

Erik ten Hag has refused to rule out making loan signings to combat the injuries and illness that threaten to derail Manchester United's bid to salvage their troubled season.

Ten Hag was without at least 10 senior players for Monday's 2-0 win at third tier Wigan in the FA Cup third round.

Denmark midfielder Christian Eriksen missed the tie due to illness, while Brazil winger Antony was injured.

United's substitutes were entirely comprising of youngsters, with the oldest outfield player on the bench being 22-year-old Facundo Pellistri.

Although Ten Hag is optimistic a number of players could return in time for Sunday's Premier League match against Tottenham, he is well aware just how stretched his squad is at present.

With the January transfer window open, the Dutch coach was asked if United would consider temporarily deals as well as permanent signings.

"We consider everything. So what is in the best interests of the players and also the best interests for us, the team, for Manchester United. So we'll see how we progress during the window," he said.

United are out of the Champions League and League Cup and are languishing in eighth place in the Premier League, nine points adrift of the top four.

Ten Hag admitted it has been frustrating to lose so many players in recent weeks.

But he won't that to be an excuse for their woeful run, featuring five defeats from their nine games before the Wigan match.

"I don't want to be frustrated because I can do nothing for it, it will not help to support the team," Ten Hag said.&nbsp;

"So we have to get the best performance and best results with the players available and that's what we're trying to do.

"I think there will be some players that are hopeful they can be back for the weekend."

Ten Hag hopes Eriksen can return in time for the Spurs match, while Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire could also be available.

The victory at Wigan sets up an FA Cup fourth round tie at either League Two Newport or non-league Eastleigh.

The competition, which United finished as runners-up in last season, is their only realistic opportunity of silverware this term.

"I don't think (the focus on the FA Cup) would change if you are still in Europe," Ten Hag said.&nbsp;

"It is a massive competition. Everyone wants to win this competition. So every game we take seriously."

Liverpool survived an Arsenal barrage to claim a place in the FA Cup fourth round in dramatic fashion as a pair of late goals sealed a 2-0 win on Sunday.

While Kevin De Bruyne's long-awaited return for Manchester City in the holders' 5-0 rout of Huddersfield was a memorable moment on Sunday, it was Liverpool's victory in the blockbuster third round clash at the Emirates Stadium that stole the spotlight.

Jurgen Klopp's side rode their luck for long spells as Arsenal wasted a series of chances before Polish defender Jakub Kiwior headed Trent Alexander-Arnold's free-kick into his own net with 10 minutes left.

Luis Diaz wrapped up the smash and grab raid in stoppage-time.

Liverpool's first FA Cup win over Arsenal since the 2001 final was a significant moment as the Premier League leaders inflicted a psychological blow on one of their main title rivals.

Arsenal have now won only once in their last six games in all competitions, an unexpected stumble that leaves them out of the FA Cup and League Cup and five points behind Liverpool in the title race.

No wonder Klopp celebrated with such gusto at the final whistle, pumping his fists in acknowledgement of a victory that could springboard Liverpool's bid to win four trophies.

"In the end we came through. I'm really happy we could win this game. Arsenal could have won it without a doubt. We finished it off and it spoke for the character of the boys," Klopp said.

The Reds, who drew 1-1 with Arsenal in the Premier League in December, face Fulham in the League Cup semi-final first leg in midweek and are also through to the Europa League last 16.

"The performance was there and the amount of chances too. We just have to win the game, but we lost it and we are not capitalising," Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta said.&nbsp;

Klopp was without Mohamed Salah and Wataru Endo, who are competing at the Africa Cup of Nations and Asian Cup respectively, and the ill Virgil Van Dijk.

Martin Odegaard should have rewarded the Gunners for their vibrant start, but the midfielder blasted his shot off the bar from 12 yards.

Ben White's thunderous strike from just inside the area forced a superb tip-over from Liverpool keeper Alisson Becker.

Liverpool finally came to life and Luis Diaz's snap-shot was well saved by Aaron Ramsdale, while Diogo Jota hit the woodwork.

In the 80th minute, Alexander-Arnold's free-kick was headed into his own net by Kiwior and Diaz sealed the win in final seconds of stoppage-time as he took Jota's pass and fired home from 10 yards.

Manchester City midfielder De Bruyne had been sidelined since tearing his hamstring during the Premier League opener against Burnley in August.

He finally got back in action as a 57th minute substitute in City's emphatic victory over Championship strugglers Huddersfield at the Etihad Stadium.

Pep Guardiola's side were leading by goals from Phil Foden and Julian Alvarez when the 32-year-old was introduced.

City netted three more times through Ben Jackson's own goal, another Foden effort and a Jeremy Doku strike on his return from injury as a second half substitute.

Fittingly, Doku's goal was set up by a deft lofted pass from De Bruyne.

City have stayed afloat without De Bruyne, but his world-class quality in midfield will be a key factor in their bid to retain the Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup.

"We are incredibly delighted to have him back because Kevin helps to win games. Kevin is exceptional. He is unique," Guardiola said.

Premier League strugglers Luton were held 0-0 by third tier Bolton at Kenilworth Road.

FA Cup: Liverpool seal dramatic win despite Arsenal's late barrage to enter fourth round

Reigning champions Real Madrid secured their place in the Copa del Rey last 16 with a 3-1 win at fourth-tier Arandina on Saturday.

The minnows fought gamely in the first half but Joselu put Madrid ahead with a penalty early in the second, with Brahim Diaz and Rodrygo Goes expanding Madrid's lead.

Madrid defender Nacho Fernandez put through his own net in stoppage time to give Arandina a consolation goal which delighted supporters at their packed 6,000 capacity El Montecillo stadium.

Elsewhere Atletico Madrid progressed with a 3-1 win at third-tier Lugo after Memphis Depay struck twice, while Real Betis were knocked out in a 1-0 defeat by Alaves.

Surprise La Liga title challengers Girona beat second division side Elche 2-0.

Arandina battled well to frustrate Madrid in a surprisingly even first half in the province of Castile and Leon, north of the Spanish capital.

Carlo Ancelotti started Eduardo Camavinga, returning after a knee ligament injury which saw him miss nearly two months.

Otherwise the Italian largely deployed a combination of reserve and youth players, handing Turkish playmaker Arda Guler his first appearance since joining Madrid this summer from Fenerbahce.

Guler came closer than anyone to scoring in the first half, striking the post with a rasping free-kick and playing with freedom to roam.

Madrid took the lead from the spot early in the second half after the excellent Diaz was tripped by Zazu as he ran into the area, with Joselu dispatching a firm, low penalty.

Diaz added the second moments later after the ball broke loose to him and he fired it home across Arandina goalkeeper Adrian Alvarez.

Joselu missed a good chance to extend Madrid's lead further before substitute Rodrygo stroked in the third in stoppage time from Diaz's cross.

Arandina got the goal their performance deserved at the death when Nacho deflected Raly Cabral's cross into his own net.

Earlier Depay scored twice for Atletico to send them through after Lugo had taken the visitors in level at the break.

Atletico took the lead in the second minute when Angel Correa tapped home Javi Galan's cross at the back post.

However the visitors were pegged back when Puerto Rican striker Leandro Antonetti bundled his way into the area and finished with aplomb.

Diego Simeone sent on Antoine Griezmann at half-time, bidding to avoid an upset, and Atletico took the lead midway through the second half through Depay.

The striker found space in the box and smashed home, going on to quickly add a second goal with a superb clipped finish from Marcos Llorente's cross.

"The team came out well after the break and in general had a good second half and were fair winners," Simeone told reporters.

Record 31-time Copa winners Barcelona visit Barbastro on Sunday.

Liverpool's Mohamed Salah highlights Egypt's squad for Africa Cup of Nations

Arsenal missed out on the chance to return to the Premier League summit on Thursday, losing 2-0 to West Ham as Tottenham went down in a six-goal thriller at Brighton.

Mikel Arteta's Gunners were top of the tree at Christmas for a second successive year but trail leaders Liverpool by two points at the halfway point of the season.

Last year's runners-up dominated possession at the Emirates but lacked a cutting edge against the disciplined visitors, for whom Tomas Soucek and former Arsenal player Konstantinos Mavropanos scored the goals.

Soucek opened the scoring from close range in the 13th minute following a pass from Jarrod Bowen, with the goal confirmed after a lengthy VAR check looking into whether the ball had gone out of play.

Arsenal surged forward in relentless waves and West Ham goalkeeper Alphonse Areola made a fine reaction save from a Bukayo Saka header on the half-hour.

The England winger hit the post from a tight angle as the clock ticked down towards half-time but Arsenal trailed at the break despite enjoying nearly three-quarters of possession.

The Gunners came out determined to find a response but instead they found themselves 2-0 down when Mavropanos's bullet header cannoned in off the crossbar from James Ward-Prowse's corner.

Gabriel Jesus failed to beat Areola with a header when well-placed and shortly afterwards missed another glorious opportunity with his head at the back post.&nbsp;

Arsenal continued to bombard the visitors' goal but could not find a breakthrough and it could have been worse had Said Benrahma managed to convert a late penalty.

Defeat leaves the Gunners in second place on 40 points, one clear of Aston Villa and three ahead of Manchester City, who have a game in hand.

Arteta said his team deserved more for their dominance.

"We want to be at the top and today we are very, very disappointed," he told the BBC.

"We had so much dominance in the game. We are in a really good position. Today is a disappointing night. We have to pick ourselves up for a big game against Fulham."

He added: "The players put an enormous effort in. It's a difficult dressing room right now but we have another game in 72 hours. This is football, we have to improve in certain areas."

West Ham manager David Moyes celebrated his team's rise to sixth in the table.

"We are not one of the top teams," he told Amazon Prime. "We are trying to get up and grow the team. For West Ham to be in Europe (they topped their Europa League group) is a great period."

<h2>Spurs drama</h2>

Tottenham, this season's early pacesetters, remain in fifth spot after losing 4-2 despite threatening an astonishing comeback from 4-0 down against Roberto De Zerbi's Brighton.

Jack Hinshelwood finished with brutal power to put the home side ahead following a weaving run from Joao Pedro along the edge of the penalty area.

Brighton doubled their lead from the penalty spot in the 23rd minute through Pedro, who took full advantage after Dejan Kulusevski was penalised for a pull on Welbeck.

Brazil forward Richarlison twice had the ball in the net after the break but both times he was ruled offside.

Pervis Estupinan&nbsp;stretched the lead with a thunderbolt from 30 yards in the 63rd minute and Pedro scored a second penalty 12 minutes later.

Alejo Veliz grabbed what appeared to be a consolation goal in the 81st minute but it galvanised the visitors.

Ben Davies&nbsp;headed home Pedro Porro's deep cross as Spurs threatened to cut through every time they poured forward, with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg hitting the post during nine frantic minutes of stoppage time.

But Brighton withstood the intense pressure to take all three points.

"I am really lucky to be this coach of this team with these players," De Zerbi told the BBC. "I am very pleased with the passion they have, they have everything.

"You can't forget we are Brighton. Sometimes they forget we are Brighton. We are not Manchester United, Manchester City, Newcastle or Arsenal, we are still Brighton."

South Korea have not won the Asian Cup since 1960 and Klinsmann said: "It's all about timing now and I think we are ready for this big, big competition.

"It's 64 years -- 64 years is a long time for Korea. It's about time that we get this done."

South Korea have been drawn in Group E and will face Malaysia, Jordan and Bahrain in the first round.

They lost 1-0 to eventual champions Qatar in the quarter-finals of the 2019 Asian Cup in the United Arab Emirates.

Klinsmann, a World Cup winner with Germany in 1990, will have one of the strongest squads in the tournament in Qatar and he said he could "see it in their eyes that they are hungry for it".

"I have a good feeling because they're doing well at their clubs," he said.

"They're healthy, they're fit, they're ambitious and they're very hungry. This is the foundation for playing a good tournament."

Son will be appearing at his fourth Asian Cup and was part of the South Korea team that lost to hosts Australia in the 2015 final.

Hwang scored twice in Wolves' 4-1 win over Brentford to move one goal behind Son, who has 11, in the Premier League scoring charts.

<h2>'One of the favourites'</h2>

Lee is also making a splash after moving to Paris from Mallorca in the summer, and Klinsmann described him as "a flower that starts to bloom".

"We have a lot of different pieces in that roster and that makes us one of the favourites for the Asian Cup," said Klinsmann.

"We have to fine tune these elements over the next couple of weeks and then go into the tournament with confidence."

Klinsmann was unable to select Hwang Ui-jo, who has been suspended by South Korea because of a police investigation into allegations he illegally filmed an ex-girlfriend.

The Norwich City forward is accused of filming a sexual encounter with the former partner on his phone without consent. He denies the allegation.

"It's very difficult for us coaches to deal with that because it's not in our power," said Klinsmann.

Football: Tottenham Hotspur’s Son to lead as South Korea aim to end Asian Cup drought

Arsenal ensured they will spend Christmas Day on top of the Premier League as they held title rivals Liverpool to a pulsating 1-1 draw at Anfield on Saturday.

Mikel Arteta's side took an early lead through Gabriel Magalhaes, but Mohamed Salah hauled Liverpool level before the interval.

A draw was arguably the right result after both sides flexed their muscles to show why they have emerged as the leading contenders to win the title.

Chasing a first title since 2004, Arsenal sit one point clear of second placed Liverpool heading into the festive period.

The team that has topped the Premier League at Christmas has gone on to win the title in six of the past 10 seasons, but the draw on Merseyside was also a boost to the chasing pack.

Third placed Aston Villa are level on points with Liverpool, fourth placed Tottenham are three points further back, while champions Manchester City are six points adrift of the leaders with a game in hand.

Liverpool are unbeaten in their past 11 games against Arsenal at Anfield.

However, coming a week after their goalless stalemate against Manchester United, this was another frustrating result for Jurgen Klopp's team.

"Oh my god, how strong are they? The good news is we are good as well," Klopp said.

"We pass instead of shoot, four or five times we do that, it's a lesson. But generally the game is great."

Arsenal weren't completely satisfied either.

Last season they led 2-0 at Liverpool but ended up drawing 2-2, a result that started their collapse in the title race.

Their failure to hold on this time should not have such a damaging impact, but it was still a missed opportunity.

"Proud of the performance but the final pass went astray a few times. That's where the frustration lies," Arsenal forward Bukayo Saka said.

Klopp had urged Liverpool fans to give Arsenal the "proper Anfield experience" after saying he was unhappy with the atmosphere during Wednesday's 5-1 rout of West Ham in the League Cup.

But Arteta was well aware of the maelstrom lying in wait, likening the visceral Anfield experience to being thrown around in a "washing machine".

<h2>Red wave</h2>

Responding to Klopp, the Liverpool faithful bellowed their 'You'll never walk alone' anthem as loudly as ever before kick-off, but Arsenal took just 30 seconds to show they were unfazed.

A flowing move cut open the Liverpool defence and ended with Gabriel Jesus's shot deflecting just over.

It was a warning and Arsenal took the lead after only four minutes.

Martin Odegaard delivered a perfect free-kick into the Liverpool area and Gabriel rose to thump his header past Alisson Becker from eight yards.

The Brazilian defender celebrated by cupping his hands to his ears in front of the Kop.

Anfield was stunned but not silenced. Falling behind was nothing new to Liverpool, who had trailed in eight other Premier League games this season and only lost one of them.

Liverpool were controversially denied a penalty by VAR when Odegaard handled in the area after slipping under pressure from Salah.

Salah took it upon himself to ensure Liverpool weren't left to rue that debatable decision as the Egyptian conjured a superb 29th minute equaliser.

Trent Alexander-Arnold's raking pass picked out Salah down the right flank and he glided away from Oleksandr Zinchenko into the area before smashing a fierce strike past David Raya at his near post.

A thrilling half concluded with Arteta holding his head when Gabriel Martinelli shot wide moments after Saka ran through on goal but failed to finish.

Klopp's men had the momentum after the break and Joe Gomez rifled inches wide, while Harvey Elliott's long-range strike deflected onto the post.

They should have been in front in the 73rd minute when a break from an Arsenal corner climaxed with Salah teeing up Alexander-Arnold, but the ball took a slight bobble and his shot cannoned back off the crossbar with just Raya to beat.

As the relentless Red wave kept surging toward the Kop, Gomez's effort drew a good stop from Raya, but Arsenal held on.

Premier League: Arsenal play draw with Liverpool at Anfield, remain on top of table at Christmas

Manchester City won the Club World Cup for the first time to end 2023 with five trophies after a 4-0 win over Fluminense in Jeddah on Friday.

City's victory extended European clubs' domination of the competition since 2012 and was never in doubt once Julian Alvarez opened the scoring inside the first minute.

Nino's first-half own goal realistically ended the Brazilians' dreams of an upset, before Phil Foden and Alvarez rounded off the scoring in the final 20 minutes.

After clinching the treble of the club's first ever Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup last season, City also lifted the UEFA Super Cup for the first time in August.

Pep Guardiola also made history as the first coach to lift the Club World Cup on four occasions and with three different clubs after previously winning the competition twice at Barcelona and once in charge of Bayern Munich.

"To win the treble was truly special, but to win two more trophies and now hold these five major titles shows the unique mentality of this team," said Guardiola.

"As a manager it is what I am most proud of: that we are always there. No matter how much we win, no matter what trophies we lift, we are there again to fight for the next one."

City's poor Premier League form before flying out to Saudi Arabia had raised Fluminense hopes that Guardiola's men could be vulnerable.

But the growing chasm between Europe's elite clubs and the rest of the world thanks to huge financial imbalances in the global game was instead exposed.

European clubs have won 22 consecutive games at the Club World Cup.

City laboured for 45 minutes to break down Japan's Urawa Reds in the semi-final before cruising to a 3-0 win.

This time, they needed less than 45 seconds.

Alvarez scored the fastest goal ever in a Club World Cup final as he chested into an unguarded net after Nathan Ake's shot came back off the post.

At just 23, the Argentine added to his remarkable haul of silverware that includes the World Cup and Copa America at international level, the Copa Libertadores during his time at River Plate, plus Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and UEFA Super Cup medals during just over a year at City.

<h2>- Rodri injury worry -</h2>

Fluminense were then dealt the killer blow when captain Nino turned Foden's cross into his own net after Rodri's pass opened up the Brazilian defence.

Ederson was called into action to maintain City's two-goal lead before the break as the Brazilian international made a stunning save from Jhon Arias' header.

But his opposite number Fabio was the busier goalkeeper. The 37-year-old kept the score down and saved Fluminense's blushes.

Fabio turned Jack Grealish's fiercely struck effort behind before half-time and twice denied Foden early in the second half.

City were able to coast through the second period to end a glorious year on a high, but victory could come at a cost.

Rodri was forced off with an injury 20 minutes from time. City have lost all three Premier League games this season when the influential Spanish midfielder has been absent and they travel to in-form Everton on December 27.

However, that did not take the shine off a marquee 12 months that marks the high-point in a trophy-laden 15 years since City's fortunes were transformed by a takeover from Abu Dhabi's Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

Alvarez was the creator for City's third as Foden slid in to meet his driven cross.

And the man deputising for the injured Erling Haaland rounded off the scoring two minutes from time with his 10th goal of the season.

Football: Manchester City win maiden FIFA Club World Cup

Kylian Mbappe marked his 25th birthday with a brace as Paris Saint-Germain beat Metz 3-1 in Ligue 1 on Wednesday to reach the halfway stage of the season five points clear at the top of the table.

PSG, who had been held 1-1 at Lille at the weekend, laboured in the first half before Vitinha opened the scoring early in the second half by turning in a cross from Lee Kang-in.

Mbappe then took centre stage by making it 2-0 with a superb strike in off the underside of the crossbar from the edge of the area.

Matthieu Udol pulled one back for the struggling visitors but Mbappe pounced on a short backpass to round the goalkeeper and make it 3-1 towards the end for his 18th league goal of the campaign.

His birthday was made even more memorable when his 16-year-old brother Ethan came on for his senior debut in stoppage time.

PSG end the year with a comfortable five-point cushion over nearest challengers Nice, who defeated Lens 2-0 on Wednesday thanks to two late goals from Nigerian striker Terem Moffi.

Monaco are seven points behind the leaders in third place after coming from behind to win 2-1 at Toulouse, with&nbsp;Wissam Ben Yedder scoring both of their goals.

The principality side held on to take all three points despite having Aleksandr Golovin sent off early in the second half.

Malian international Kamory Doumbia produced the individual performance of the evening by scoring four goals, all in the first half, as Brest beat Brittany rivals Lorient 4-0.

That result lifted Brest up into fourth, a Champions League qualifying berth, above a Lille side who were beaten 2-1 away at Patrick Vieira's Strasbourg.

<h2>- Fireworks -</h2>

Marseille are sixth after coming from behind to draw 1-1 at Montpellier, with Jordan Veretout scoring their goal in a game that was held up for five minutes in the second half after fireworks were set off at one end of the stadium.

Montpellier had a point deducted following an incident in their home match against Clermont earlier this season, when the away side's goalkeeper was hit by a firecracker thrown from the same stand.

"These guys are idiots, it's incredible," complained Montpellier coach Michel Der Zakarian on Wednesday.

"I don't understand it. You are supposed to come to the stadium to support your team, not to set off fireworks."

Japanese international Keito Nakamura got the only goal as Will Still's Reims defeated Le Havre 1-0, while Rennes struck twice late on to claim a 3-1 victory at bottom club Clermont.

Meanwhile, Lyon climbed out of the bottom three as they beat Nantes 1-0 thanks to an Alexandre Lacazette goal.

It was a third consecutive victory for a team who had previously won just once all season, and the result lifted them two points above Toulouse, who now occupy the relegation play-off position.
