Gareth Southgate said the door was still "100 percent" open for Raheem Sterling after leaving the Chelsea forward out of England's squad for their final Euro 2024 qualifiers.

Southgate, whose side are already assured of their place in the tournament in Germany next year, named a 25-man group on Thursday for a home match against Malta on November 17 and a trip to North Macedonia three days later.

Sterling, who has 82 caps and 20 goals for England, has not played for the national team since last year's World Cup in Qatar, where England reached the quarter-finals.

"The door is 100 percent open not only for Raheem but for other players," said Southgate. "There's no doubt about that.

"We don't need to know about his quality, his personality. He is a crucial part of why we've had the journey we've had over the last few years."

The England boss said it was tough to leave in-form players out to accommodate Sterling, 28, who has scored four goals for Chelsea this season.

"He wasn't available in March or June and the team started on a good run," he said. "We won in Italy for the first time in 60 years, the two performances in June were excellent, so we stuck with that group," he added.

"There is no question Raheem is looking dangerous for his club, he looks invigorated since the start of the season. (But) that is an area of the pitch where we've probably got as much competition for places as anywhere."

Manchester City defender John Stones and Arsenal forward Eddie Nketiah are both out injured.

Chelsea captain James is fit again after a hamstring injury, but asked to be left out of the squad after it had been expected he would replace Stones.

Southgate said: "I was hoping to call up Reece James, but he doesn't feel he is quite ready and I understand that.

"He's had a long path back from a number of injuries and he's cautious in that respect. I can understand why."

Southgate paid tribute to Bobby Charlton, who died last month and will be honoured in England's match against Malta at Wembley.

"I think he is respected around the world and clearly our greatest-ever player when you think of not only the World Cup, but also winning the European Cup and everything he did at club level," he said.

"Very sad. We were fortunate to have met him a few times and incredibly humble, so, yes, our condolences are with all his family but hopefully we get the chance to honour him at Wembley and it will be a celebration of life."

An 11th German fan was arrested in a separate incident in Naples, accused of violence towards a public official.

The win was Uruguay's first over Brazil in a World Cup qualifying fixture since a 1-0 victory over the "Selecao" in Montevideo in July 2001.

The defeat marked another disappointing result for five-time world champions Brazil, who were held to a 1-1 draw by Venezuela last week in the previous round.

The win leaves Uruguay level on seven points alongside Brazil and Venezuela, two adrift of early pace-setters Argentina, who lead the standings with a maximum of nine points from three games. Argentina face Peru in Lima later on Tuesday.

Venezuela boosted their own hopes of reaching the World Cup for the first time with an impressive 3-0 rout of Chile in Maturin.

Winger Yeferson Soteldo was the star for 'La Vinotinto', scoring the opening goal and setting up second-half goals for veteran striker Salomon Rondon and Darwin Machis.

Soteldo opened the scoring in stoppage time at the end of the first half, stabbing a low-angled shot into the bottom corner to the delight of a raucous home crowd.

The Santos winger turned provider for Venezuela's second, bursting down the left flank and cutting back for Rondon to sweep home from close range on 72 minutes.

Soteldo was involved again for Venezuela's third, once again finding space on the left wing and crossing for an unmarked Machis to make it 3-0.

Elsewhere Tuesday, Paraguay got their first win of the qualifiers, defeating lowly Bolivia 1-0 in Asuncion with a 69th-minute strike from Antonio Sanabria.

Bolivia remain bottom of the standings while Paraguay are seventh with three points from four games.

In Quito meanwhile, Colombia maintained their unbeaten start to qualifiers with a 0-0 draw away to Ecuador.

Six teams from the 10-team round-robin tournament will qualify automatically for the 2026 World Cup, which will feature 48 teams for the first time and is being co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Although Pascal Gross struck the post early on for Germany, who were missing midfielder Joshua Kimmich due to illness, the home side looked threatening with Pulisic and Tim Weah lively on the flanks.

Gio Reyna, who had gone through a bitter public row with coach Gregg Berhalter after the World Cup last year, returned to the starting lineup and provided some creative touches as the Americans started well.

Pulisic put the USA ahead in the 27th minute with a superb solo goal, cutting in from the left flank and then unleashing a fine drive into the far corner.

But that appeared to serve merely as a wake-up call for Germany with Ilkay Gundogan levelling in the 39th minute after good work from Leroy Sane.

Sane dribbled across the American defense, played a one-two with Gundogan and tried to go round American goalkeeper Matt Turner, who could only push the ball into the path of Gundogan, who had a simple conversion.

Germany went ahead in the 58th with center forward Niclas Fuellkrug slotting home after a perfectly weighted one-touch pass from Robin Gosens.

With the USA defense at disarray, Fuellkrug then set up the lively Jamal Musiala for a simple tap-in to make it 3-1 for the Euro 2024 hosts.

Sane should have made it four when he was set up nicely by Musiala, but the Bayern Munich winger fired his shot wide from a promising position.

Musiala's speed and skill were major highlights of the performance from Germany with Gundogan, as always, calm and intelligent in the center of midfield.

"Against a good team with a lot of speed, we took a very good step in terms of football," said 36-year-old Nagelsmann, who felt his team had been too rushed in the opening 45 minutes.

"In the second half, we also had a fast pace of play, but more patience and control. That was the difference,"

Berhalter's Americans missed the impact of injured central midfielder Tyler Adams and Pulisic noted their weakness at tha back.

"It hurts. We had a good start to the game. I felt like we hurt them in a lot of moments. But yeah, little mistakes here and there. Defensively, we can be a bit better," the AC Milan winger said.

"Obviously, we have to give them credit. They have some unbelievable players. They played a strong game."

Germany will face Mexico in Philadelphia on Tuesday, when the USA will take on Ghana in Nashville.
