Arsenal survived a penalty shootout to scrape past Porto and reach the quarter-finals of the Champions League for the first time in 14 years after a tense last-16 duel had ended 1-1 on aggregate on Tuesday (March 12).

Porto, who won the opening leg 1-0, proved stubborn opposition for the Premier League leaders and Arsenal fans must have feared another night of European heartache.

But Martin Odegaard, Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice all tucked away their spot kicks with clinical precision.

Porto's Wendell saw his effort somehow stay out after hitting the post and Arsenal keeper David Raya then became the hero as he kept out Galeno's penalty to send Arsenal through 4-2 in the shootout and spark wild celebrations.

Leandro Trossard's well-taken effort shortly before halftime had levelled the tie but Arsenal struggled to break down a disciplined Porto side who also carved out some decent chances.

Extra time failed to separate the sides but Mikel Arteta's team held their nerve to snap a run of seven successive exits at the last-16 stage. The last time they reached the quarter-finals in 2010 they also beat Porto in the last 16 and they will go into Friday's draw full of confidence that they can go further.

Cristiano Ronaldo's Al-Nassr crashed out of the Asian Champions League in the quarter-finals after the Saudi Pro League side lost 3-1 on penalties to Al-Ain in a pulsating game on Monday (March 11).

Al-Nassr overturned a 1-0 first leg deficit to win 4-3 on Monday but with the contest ending 4-4 on aggregate, the players headed into a shootout from which Al-Ain prevailed.

Al-Nassr's foreign imports Miroslav Brozovic, Alex Telles and Otavio all failed to score from the spot as the side from the United Arab Emirates advanced to the semi-finals, where they will face either Al-Hilal or Al-Ittihad -- both from Saudi Arabia -- next month.

Al-Ain goalkeeper Khalid Eisa made amends for a disappointing display when he saved Brozovic's opening penalty and, with Soufiane Rahimi, Kaku and Sultan Al Shamsi all converting, Otavio's miss meant Al-Nassr were eliminated.

The shootout brought a dramatic end to a thrilling clash at Al-Awwal Park that featured seven goals and a red card, with Al-Ain building on their first leg lead during the opening 45 minutes.

Rahimi, scorer of Al-Ain's first leg winner, put the visitors in control with goals in the 28th and 45th minutes but Abdulrahman Ghareeb's strike five minutes into injury time kept Al-Nassr's hopes alive.

Otavio's low drive was redirected into his own goal by Khaled Eisa six minutes after the restart and Alex Telles levelled the aggregate scores 18 minutes from time with a low free kick that flew through a crowd of players to beat Eisa.

Al-Nassr's Ayman Yahya was sent off for a vicious two-footed lunge on Bandar Al-Ahbabi eight minutes into extra time and, a minute later, Al-Shamsi thought he had scored the winner when he capitalised on Raghid Najjar's handling error to poke home.

But Ronaldo scored from the penalty spot with two minutes remaining, after the Portuguese striker was taken down in the area by Saeed Jumaa, to take the game to a shootout.

Ronaldo was the only one of Al-Nassr's four penalty takers to successfully convert as Al-Ain advanced to the last four for the first time since 2016.

In the Eastern half of the draw, South Korean sides Jeonbuk Motors and Ulsan Hyundai will meet on Tuesday after sharing a 1-1 draw last week.

On Wednesday, Harry Kewell's Yokohama F Marinos side will hope to defend a 2-1 lead on home soil when they face Chinese Super League side Shandong Taishan.

Chelsea forward Sam Kerr has the Women's Super League club's "full support", manager Emma Hayes said on Wednesday (March 6) with the Australia captain set to face trial in the UK having been accused of racially aggravated harassment of a police officer last year.

"The charge relates to an incident involving a police officer who was responding to a complaint involving a taxi fare on 30 January 2023 in Twickenham," the Metropolitan Police said in a statement.

Kerr, who on the day before the incident scored a hat-trick against Liverpool in the FA Cup at Kingsmeadow, Chelsea women's home ground, is due to appear in court in February next year.

The club did not comment on Kerr's case at the time, but Hayes said she would be supported by her and "everyone else at Chelsea".

British media reported Kerr's lawyers will attempt to have the charge thrown out in a hearing next month.

Football Australia had been unaware of Kerr's legal trouble, the governing body's CEO James Johnson confirmed on Tuesday.

"We woke up to this this morning," Johnson told reporters in Adelaide.

"Of course, it’s a very serious allegation. It regards racism and there’s no place for racism in our sport.

"At the same time Sam has rights, natural justice rights, procedural rights that she's got to work her way through and we're respectful of that."

Kerr, Australia's all-time top scorer with 69 goals in 128 appearances, has been sidelined since suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury at Chelsea training in January.

She has scored 99 goals in 128 matches for the London side, winning the league four times, the FA Cup three times and the League Cup twice.

Mauricio Pochettino believes he still has the backing of Chelsea's owners after defeat by Liverpool in the League Cup final but accepts his future at Stamford Bridge is "out of my hands".

The under-pressure Argentine said he had had constructive conversations with Chelsea co-owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali following Sunday's 1-0 extra-time defeat at Wembley.

The loss led to renewed criticism of Pochettino and his expensively assembled squad, with former Manchester United defender Gary Neville, now a TV pundit, accusing Chelsea of being nothing more than a "blue billion-pound bottle-job".&nbsp;

Chelsea, a mediocre 11th in the Premier League, will seek to revive their season at home to Leeds in the fifth round of the FA Cup on Wednesday.

"I said hello to the owners when I saw them in the stadium and after (the final) I met Behdad and we were talking," Pochettino said at his pre-match press conference on Tuesday.

"We were sharing our opinions about the game and the opportunity we missed to win a trophy because I think we played really well during the 90 minutes.

"We created the best chances, we were not clinical enough but that is what has happened since the beginning of the season.

"They (the owners) showed their support and after the game, Todd sent a nice message."

Pochettino, when asked if he would be given time to transform Chelsea's fortunes, replied: "It's&nbsp;not in my hands. We have a very good relationship with the owners, with the sporting director.

Virgil van Dijk's 118th minute goal against Chelsea in the fag end of extra time propelled a injury-forced second string Liverpool to Carabao Cup (EFL Cup) glory on Sunday (Feb 25) at Wembley Stadium in London. Liverpool skipper Van Dijk, who led a young side to victory with his header in last couple of minutes of regulation extra time, said: "It means so much. All the young boys on the pitch in extra-time… it’s incredible, I’m so proud of the team. It was an intense game, for both sides. It’s amazing: first trophy as Liverpool captain. It’s all for the fans, so let’s enjoy it."

"We never take these things for granted. We’re very blessed. We could have lost today we didn’t – we did the job. I’m so proud to be part of this club, and especially proud of the boys," he added.

The game remained tight through the regulation time and extra time with possession being in Liverpool's favour by 53-47. Chelsea will feel a bit unlucky, having made nine out of 10 shots on target but not one hit the net.

Liverpool, on the other hand, should be proud rightfully for keeping a much experienced in check with 11 on-target shots in 13 attempts.&nbsp;

"Last season there were 25 head injuries from more than 800 professional games in France, that's one for every 50 to 60 matches," the French football federatioin's medical director Emmanuel Orhant told AFP.

He added: "This season we've had five (head injuries), that's one in 80 games.&nbsp;

"In rugby's Top 14 there is a head injury every two matches. So there aren't many situations of this nature in football but that's no reason not to take this problem seriously."

Honduras striker Alberth Elis remained in hospital on Sunday, according to media reports, after being put into a coma following a serious head injury during Bordeaux's Ligue 2 match against Guingamp.

Honduras striker Alberth Elis remained in hospital on Sunday, according to media reports, after being put into a coma following a serious head injury during Bordeaux's Ligue 2 match against Guingamp. The 28-year-old player underwent successful surgery on Saturday night after being placed in induced coma, according to the press in France and Honduras. Bordeaux has not confirmed this information, citing medical confidentiality. The German Football League (DFL) on Wednesday dropped a huge cash injection deal with investors for a share of Bundesliga media revenues after widespread fan protests, a U-turn hailed by fanclubs as a "success" for supporters.

"Given current developments, a successful continuation of the process no longer seems possible," Hans-Joachim Watzke said in a statement on behalf of the DFL's board.

Fans had littered pitches with tennis balls and chocolate coins, attached bike locks to the goals and released toy cars onto the field to signal their opposition to the deal.

The protests interrupted matches over the last weeks, leading referees to even threaten to abandon games.

In December, German clubs voted by a two-thirds majority in favour of the plan to "secure long-term and sustainable success".

In exchange for eight per cent of future TV rights, the league would receive an immediate investment, said to be close to one billion euros ($1.1 billion), to help market and promote the Bundesliga internationally.

Despite excellent stadium attendances and a lucrative domestic TV deal, international interest in the Bundesliga lags behind that of England's Premier League or Spain's La Liga.

But Germany's powerful fan clubs say the investor process lacked transparency and ignored supporters' wishes.

German football has a notable commitment to fan control and involvement via a "50+1" rule which restricts the degree of influence an external investor can have over a club.&nbsp;

The rule is incredibly popular among German fans, many of whom value it more than success on the field.

Hailing Wednesday's decision, fan group Unsere Kurve said the "comprehensive, but very peaceful and very creative protests were ultimately the key to success".

German football was being tested by the protests, "even if a large majority are in favour of the necessity of the strategic partnership", Watzke said.

"Fan groups are causing major clashes, which are increasingly jeopardising game operations... and thus the integrity of the competition," said Watzke, who also serves as CEO of Borussia Dortmund.

Under the circumstances, the completion of the deal "cannot be guaranteed", he said, adding that the decision to drop the investor tie-up was unanimous.

A similar proposal which sought to sell off a higher percentage of the TV revenue for a larger fee failed to get the necessary majority when put to a vote in May last year.

Andreas Brehme, whose 85th-minute penalty sealed victory for West Germany over Argentina in the 1990 World Cup final, died overnight into Tuesday at the age of 63, his former club Bayern Munich said.

"FC Bayern is deeply shocked by the sudden death of Andreas Brehme," the club said in a statement.

"We will always keep Andreas Brehme in our hearts. As a world champion and as a very special person."

A versatile left-back, Brehme spent two seasons with Bayern Munich between 1986-88, winning the Bundesliga in 1987.

Brehme left a mark for teams across Europe, playing for Kaiserslautern and Inter Milan, as well as Bayern, Saarbruecken and Real Zaragoza.

But the defender's footballing journey began in his hometown of Hamburg at HSV Barmbek-Uhlenhorst, a small club from a working class neighbourhood.

Brehme's remarkable ability with both feet was down in part to the influence of his father and coach, Bernd.&nbsp;

In Italy, Brehme will be remembered for the partnership he formed with compatriots Juergen Klinsmann and Lothar Matthaeus at Inter Milan.

"Ciao Andi, forever a legend," said the club for whom Brehme made more than 150 appearances, winning the Serie A title and a UEFA Cup.

<h2>'I didn't think anything'</h2>

The Nerazzurri will wear black armbands in honour of Brehme during their Champions League clash against Atletico Madrid later on Tuesday at the San Siro.

Brehme's closest sporting connection is arguably with Kaiserslautern, where he played for 10 seasons over two stints, later going on to manage the club in the early 2000s.

The Kaiserslautern legend was moved to tears when the "Red Devils" were relegated from the Bundesliga in 1996.

But the team immediately bounced back to the top flight and marched straight to the title in 1998 with Brehme as captain.

Brehme played 86 times for his country, although nothing would top his exploits in the 1-0 victory over Diego Maradona's Argentina in Rome.

The goal, a coolly taken penalty, atoned for West Germany's 3-2 loss against the very same Argentina side in the 1986 World Cup final in Mexico.

Four years later, Brehme stepped up to the spot instead of team captain Matthaeus, who did not want to take on the responsibility after changing his boots at half-time.

"No matter where I am, at the airport, out shopping, I am always asked about it," Brehme had told SID, AFP's sports news subsidiary.

"I didn't think about the significance of this penalty. I didn't think anything," said Brehme, who slotted the ball to the goalkeeper's right.

<h2>'Our World Cup hero'</h2>

Brehme's World Cup-winning teammates reacted with shock at the passing of the goalscoring hero.

"Andi was always positive and radiated pure life. He was a great person, a great friend," defender Guido Buchwald told SID.

Brehme's passing comes shortly after the death of another German footballing legend, Franz Beckenbauer.

Beckenbauer, who died in January, was the manager when West Germany won their third World Cup title.

"Unfortunately, the sad news doesn't stop," midfielder Pierre Littbarski told SID.

"This is very, very sad for German football and especially for us, the 1990 world champions."

Rudi Voeller, another of Brehme's national team colleagues, said the death left him "infinitely sad".

Diogo Jota faces "months" on the sidelines after damaging his knee in Liverpool's win at Brentford, adding to manager Jurgen Klopp's mounting injury woes as they chase Premier League glory.

Saturday's 4-1 win victory in London on Saturday came at a heavy cost as forward Jota and midfielder Curtis Jones were both forced off in the first half.

Jones left the stadium on crutches after injuring his ankle and Jota departed on a stretcher, while forward Darwin Nunez was also withdrawn with a knock.

Goalkeeper Alisson Becker, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dominik Szoboszlai will be sidelined for Liverpool's home match against struggling Luton at Anfield on Wednesday while Thiago Alcantara and Joel Matip remain out of action.

Speaking about the injury situation on Tuesday, Klopp, whose team are two points clear of second-placed Arsenal, said the situation was "not great".

"I would like to sit here and say we have absolutely no issues but obviously we have some," the Liverpool boss said on Tuesday.

"So, not available is obviously Ali (Becker). That's a muscle injury where we don't know exactly how long it takes but definitely not for the foreseeable time coming back.

"Then we have Diogo with a knee issue, is ruled out. Curtis, with a bone/ligament issue, ruled out.

"And then we have the others where we will deal with it day by day with muscle things. We will see for tomorrow."

The German did not give an update on Nunez during his pre-match press conference.

When pressed on timeframes for the injuries, Klopp said:&nbsp;"With Diogo, it will obviously take rather months.

"It's with the injuries as well, so like you have important days. So, day five, day 10, they are always important days when you then judge the situation again because nobody reacts in the same way and it depends on the pain level they still have and stuff like this.

"I couldn't give you a timeframe even if I wanted to, so that's just how it is."

Liverpool, locked in a Premier League title tussle with Arsenal and Manchester City, take on Chelsea in Sunday's League Cup final and are still in the FA Cup and Europa League.

Klopp, in his final season at Anfield, praised his squad players for stepping up when required.

"We are where we are because of them," he said. "That's how it is, because the boys really delivered. We will see how many of them we will have to use and will give the opportunity because in a good moment they all can be in and we have options there, players who have shown already what they can do."

Robert Lewandowski snatched champions Barcelona an unconvincing 2-1 win over lowly Celta Vigo with a brace to leave them third in La Liga on Saturday.

Xavi Hernandez's side trail leaders Real Madrid by seven points before Los Blancos visit Rayo Vallecano on Sunday.

Atletico Madrid, fourth, thrashed Las Palmas 5-0 earlier on and trail Barcelona by three points.

The Catalans needed a stoppage-time penalty converted by Lewandowski at the second attempt to find a way past a Celta Vigo side battling relegation, down in 17th place.

Lewandowski slammed the visitors ahead at Balaidos before half-time but Iago Aspas levelled for Rafa Benitez's Celta early in the second half.

Barcelona tamely struggled to find a way through before being gifted a late spot-kick for a clumsy foul on Lamine Yamal, which Lewandowski dispatched for his 12th goal of the season.

Lewandowski's first penalty attempt was saved by Vicente Guaita but as the goalkeeper was off his line, the striker was given another chance and he converted.

"On the second penalty I scored and that's the important thing," Lewandowski told DAZN.

The Catalans are unbeaten in four matches since Xavi said he would depart at the end of the season.

They face Napoli on Wednesday in the Champions League last 16, with Europe the club's last realistic chance of silverware this season.

"I felt we played well until we got into the final third ... we lacked the final ball," Xavi told DAZN.

"I think the team had effort, attitude, commitment, the decision I made (to leave) was to get that, and it's going well -- 10 points from 12."

Xavi handed Brazilian forward Vitor Roque his first start for the club on the left of the attack, alongside Lewandowski and 16-year-old sensation Yamal.

The latter was Barcelona's brightest player once again, with the Catalans dependent on his skill and speed on the right flank to create danger.

<h2>- 'Plugged in' -</h2>

Barca broke the deadlock in the 45th minute when Yamal fed Lewandowski, who lashed home superbly from just inside the area.

The lead did not last long, with Aspas pouncing two minutes into the second half to level.

A slick move from Celta was finished by the veteran forward with the help of a deflection.

Barcelona hunted for the winner without success, until Yamal won a penalty in stoppage time.

Celta's Fran Beltran accidentally kicked the winger when trying to clear the ball and Lewandowski converted from the spot to steal Barcelona three points.

Guaita saved Lewandowski's first penalty but the veteran Polish striker stroked home clinically after being given a reprieve when the goalkeeper was shown to have moved off his line too quickly.

"Robert is 'plugged in', it makes me emotional to see the unity in the team," added Xavi.

"I am happy for Robert's goals but also for his hard work."

Xavi said Barcelona's performance summed up their campaign.

"This season we have to suffer and we seem destined to get agonising victories, we don't dominate games and errors cost us points, it's a bit of a summary of the season," he explained.

Celta sit three points above the relegation zone after Cadiz, 18th, lost 2-0 at Osasuna earlier on.

Valencia, eighth, dominated Sevilla but could not find the breakthrough in a 0-0 draw.

Girona, second, visit fifth-place Athletic Bilbao on Monday.

Earlier Atletico Madrid hammered Las Palmas despite resting key forward Antoine Griezmann.

Marcos Llorente and Angel Correa struck twice each and Memphis Depay was also on target as Diego Simeone's side strolled to victory.

Now 10 points behind Madrid despite the victory, Simeone decided to keep the French forward fresh for Tuesday's Champions League last 16 visit to face Inter Milan.

Without the injured Alvaro Morata, Atletico lined up with Correa and Llorente up front and it worked perfectly against promoted side Las Palmas, ninth.

"I'm sure (Griezmann) will be annoyed because he didn't play," said Simeone.

"We need a great Griezmann and we need him fresh."

The latter was Barcelona's brightest player once again, with the Catalans dependent on his skill and speed on the right flank to create danger. - 'Plugged in' - Barca broke the deadlock in the 45th minute when Yamal fed Lewandowski, who lashed home superbly from just inside the area. "I am happy for Robert's goals but also for his hard work." Xavi said Barcelona's performance summed up their campaign.

Paris Saint-Germain coach Luis Enrique said on Tuesday that he expects Kylian Mbappe to be unhindered by a recent ankle knock when his side face Real Sociedad in their Champions League last-16 first leg.

Mbappe was rested for PSG's Ligue 1 win over Lille at the weekend to make sure he was fully fit for Wednesday's clash against La Real at the Parc des Princes.

"When a team has a player at the level of Kylian Mbappe, the more he plays, the better it is for the team," Luis Enrique told a pre-match press conference.

"He could have played four days ago but it wasn't worth the risk."

PSG are bidding to avoid a third consecutive last-16 exit from the Champions League.

Mbappe has scored 30 goals for the club in all competitions this season and teammate Fabian Ruiz is confident he will be raring to go.

"I am sure Mbappe is going to have a great match," said Spain midfielder Ruiz.

"He received a knock but he trained yesterday and today he is in good shape to play."

Mbappe is out of contract with the French champions in June and has been heavily linked with finally making a move to Real Madrid.

But Luis Enrique refused to consider whether the match against Sociedad could prove to be Mbappe's last Champions League game at the Parc des Princes.

"Potential last game? No. That's not the way I feel it and therefore I feel neither joy nor sadness, it's business as usual," he said.

Real Sociedad are aiming to reach the quarter-finals for the first time since 1983 after finishing top of Group D ahead of Inter Milan.

Former Real Betis player Ruiz warned PSG not to underestimate their opponents after avoiding Manchester City, Real Madrid and Bayern Munich in the draw despite finishing second in their group behind Borussia Dortmund.

"I am quite familiar with Real Sociedad. They are an organised team, they exert a lot of pressure and like to have the ball and use counter-pressing, and they do it very well," he said.

"Tomorrow is a very important match for us but the atmosphere in the group remains the same -- there is excitement but at the same time we remain calm and focused."

British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe's purchase of a 25 per cent stake in Manchester United has been approved by the Premier League.

An update to the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on Monday evening revealed the Premier League's decision to give the green light to Ratcliffe's investment.

United are still awaiting Football Association approval for the deal, which Ratcliffe said could be completed by mid-February and will give him control of football operations at Old Trafford.

Confirming their approval, a Premier League statement on Tuesday said: "Sir Jim Ratcliffe's acquisition of&nbsp;25 per cent&nbsp;of Manchester United FC, and further investment of $300 million in the club, has been approved by the Premier League Board, following the completion of the Owners' and Directors' Test."

"The Board agreed to the change of the club's ownership structure last week, and this has now been officially ratified by an Independent Oversight Panel. The Premier League's Owners' Charter&nbsp;has also been signed."

"The Premier League now awaits confirmation of the transaction's completion."

It was reported on Tuesday that Ratcliffe's investment was moving towards a resolution.

The period in which holders of Class A shares can tender them for sale has been extended from February 14 until 23:59 pm on February 16.

So far 36.7 per cent of Class A shares have been tendered, already enough to complete the 25 per cent acquisition.

It was announced on Christmas Eve that INEOS chairman Ratcliffe had agreed to buy a 25 per cent stake in United from unpopular owners the Glazer family in a deal worth around £1.02 billion ($1.3 billion).

Ratcliffe will also invest a further £238 million in the club's infrastructure.

The 71-year-old has conducted a series of meetings with club staff and associates in recent days as the investment nears completion.

Ratcliffe has met leaders of the independent Manchester United Supporters' Trust and spoken with local leaders, including senior representatives of Trafford Council, and Greater Manchester mayor Andy Burnham.

The boyhood United fan was also among those in attendance at the Munich Air Disaster memorial last week.

Ratcliffe is reportedly already planning to lead an overhaul of United's squad after a difficult season for a club that last won the Premier League in 2013.

Mauricio Pochettino insists he won't lose his hair because of Chelsea's dismal form as the under-fire Blues boss called for perspective over their slump.

Pochettino was jeered by angry Chelsea fans during the Wolves capitulation, leading to fresh speculation that the Argentine could be in danger of the sack.

The former Tottenham boss has been unable to make positive impact on Chelsea despite major investment in new signings since taking charge in the close-season.

With Chelsea languishing in 11th place in the Premier League, an FA Cup exit at Villa would only add to the pressure.

But Pochettino insisted he would retain a sense of enjoyment in the job even in trying times.

"Football is my passion, not my job," he told reporters on Tuesday. "Sometimes we say 'job' but it's the wrong word. Football is entertainment.

"Being coach, I need to keep a sense of why I am here. We cannot suffer because of business and other things. We need to be focused to play football.

"To be focused in football, you need to feel free in your mind. You cannot be affected because the stock in New York or Tokyo, or the weather or because the farm doesn't grow.

"That's why I keep my hair like this, because I don't suffer from things that I am not in charge of. I only suffer for football, to try to improve the players, to provide them a good platform to win games.

"If there is no rain on my farm, you kill the business of my farm. That is a stress. You can lose your hair. But I cannot lose my hair because we're not winning because the opponent was better than us."

With 15 league games to go, Chelsea are just one place higher in the table than they finished last season.

That campaign featured the sackings of Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter, paving the way for Pochettino's eventual arrival at Stamford Bridge.

Pochettino claims he maintains a strong relationship with Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly, revealing he received a "good" text from the club hierarchy recently.

In a bid to turn the tide, Pochettino this week addressed his squad with a rallying cry ahead of the key run of fixtures that includes the League Cup final against Liverpool.&nbsp;

"I told the players today in a meeting that I trust you more than ever. I'm going to support you more than ever," he said.

"I'm not a normal boss. I'm the leader and I need to reflect with every single action that I really trust the players.

"If they don't perform it is my responsibility and the players' responsibility always because they are on the pitch.

"I trust we can turn the situation around and change the results."

But I cannot lose my hair because we're not winning because the opponent was better than us." With 15 league games to go, Chelsea are just one place higher in the table than they finished last season. In a bid to turn the tide, Pochettino this week addressed his squad with a rallying cry ahead of the key run of fixtures that includes the League Cup final against Liverpool.

Brazilian footballer Dani Alves, a former star at Barca and PSG, goes on trial Monday in Barcelona accused of raping a woman in a local nightclub.

Prosecutors are asking for a nine-year prison sentence, followed by 10 years of conditional liberty. They are also asking he pay 150,000 euros ($162,000) in compensation to the woman.

The trial opens at 9 am GMT and is due to wrap up Wednesday.

The 40-year-old former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain defender has been in jail since his arrest in January 2023 after a woman accused him of raping her in a bathroom of the VIP area of the upscale Sutton nightclub in Barcelona in the early hours of December 31, 2022.

Alves has said they had consensual sex&nbsp;after initially denying knowing the woman during a television interview.

According to the prosecution, Alves -- who was on holiday in Barcelona at the time after playing for Brazil at the World Cup in Qatar -- offered champagne to the young woman and her friend.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Alves then allegedly invited the woman to enter a small enclosure at the nightclub, which she says she did not know was a lavatory.

Once inside the footballer showed a "violent attitude" and forced her to have intercourse despite her resistance, prosecutors say according to the indictment.

"The victim asked him several times to let her go, saying she wanted to leave but the defendant prevented her from doing so," according to the indictment, which describes a "situation of anguish and terror" for the young woman.

The woman, who received medical treatment after leaving the nightclub, is being treated for post-traumatic stress, according to prosecutors.

Alves' legal team lost a battle to keep the trial behind closed doors, though media and the public will not be present when the accuser takes the stand. Her identity has never been revealed.

Alves told Barcelona-based daily La Vanguardia in June that he initially lied about knowing his accuser because he was afraid his wife would leave him if he admitted being with another woman.

Spanish courts have repeatedly rejected requests that Alves be released pending his trial, citing a flight risk to Brazil, which generally does not extradite its citizens.

In Spain, a plea deal remains possible right until the start of the trial, meaning Alves could still admit guilt in exchange for a softer penalty.

The accuser's lawyer in November denied she had reached such an agreement, but admitted "talks" had been held.&nbsp;

Alves won 42 trophies during a highly successful career, including three Champions Leagues with Barcelona and two Copa Americas with Brazil.&nbsp;

The height of his career came when playing for Barcelona between 2008 and 2016, where he won 23 trophies.

Alves, who also played for Juventus in Italy and for Seville, was at the time of his arrest with Mexican club Pumas UNAM, who sacked him soon afterwards. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Inter Milan took firm control of the Serie A title race by winning Sunday's highly-anticipated clash with Juventus 1-0 and moving four points clear of their closest rivals for the Scudetto.

Simone Inzaghi's side prevailed in a tense but eventful clash at the San Siro thanks to Federico Gatti's own goal eight minutes before half-time.

Home fans who packed the stands for the biggest match of the season roared in delight as leaders Inter put daylight between themselves and second-placed Juve with their sixth straight win in all competitions.

"It's a step in a long journey because there are lots of games to go and Juve won't give up, but it was a great night in front of a great crowd," said Inzaghi to DAZN.

"It's hard to find a weakness tonight... we've won 18 matches from 22 which is great but we're only four points ahead of Juve. Napoli were much further ahead at this stage last season."

Inter also have a game in hand -- at home against Atalanta at the end of the month -- a big advantage just as they head into a run of tough fixtures featuring their Champions League last-16 tie with Atletico Madrid.

They also travelled to Riyadh last month to win the Italian Super Cup.

Juventus, who on Sunday suffered their second defeat of the season and their first since September, have no European distractions.

Serie A's two leading goalscorers Lautaro Martinez and Dusan Vlahovic were on the San Siro pitch but it was the unfortunate Gatti who provided the decisive touch.

<h2>Advantage Inter</h2>

Inter made most of the running but bumped up against a black and white wall as Juve set up to frustrate the hosts and hit them on the break.

Marcus Thuram thought he was about to put Inter ahead midway through the first half but just as he prepared to sweep home Federico Dimarco's low cross, Bremer nipped in to take the ball from his toes.

Juve rarely ventured outside their own half in the opening period but Vlahovic could have put them ahead just after the half hour had he not miscontrolled the ball after Weston McKennie's powerful burst upfield.

But Inter got the stroke of luck they needed in the 37th minute when Nicolo Barella's cross missed both Benjamin Pavard and Thuram before deflecting over the line off Gatti.

The second half was played at a much faster pace and both teams exchanged half chances until Wojciech Szczesny's brilliant reaction stop denied Barella from close range in the 69h minute.

The Juventus goalie pulled off another miracle with four minutes remaining when he stopped Marko Arnautovic tucking home Denzel Dumfries' perfect low cross, but Inter had done enough for a huge win.

"Everyone has negative moments during a season, and it was our turn tonight," Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri told DAZN.

"We just need to get past this and focus on our next game with Udinese."

<h2>Kvaratskhelia saves Napoli</h2>

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia struck a wonder goal to fire ailing champions Napoli to a morale-boosting 2-1 win over struggling Verona.

Georgian star Kvaratskhelia curled home a long-range finish with three minutes remaining at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona to snatch a comeback victory.

Walter Mazzarri's side are seventh and were temporarily a single point away from Italy's Champions League positions until fourth-placed Atalanta beat Lazio 3-1.

"When you win like that it's a great feeling... but in reality, it would've been better to take an early lead and get it done without suffering so much," admitted Mazzarri to DAZN after another underwhelming performance from his team.

Napoli are firmly in the fight for Champions League football but the top four wasn't their target after their stunning Scudetto triumph last season.

Next weekend Napoli travel to the San Siro to take on AC Milan, a difficult trip for a team who have only won four league matches since Mazzarri took over from Rudi Garcia in November.

Serie A: Inter Milan take control of points table with win over Juventus

Shock title challengers Girona dropped two vital points in La Liga with a 0-0 draw against Real Sociedad on Saturday.

Barcelona, third, earned a 3-1 win at Alaves in La Liga on Saturday with Brazilian teenager Vitor Roque scoring and then sent off in a lively appearance off the bench.

Catalan minnows Girona, second and now trailing leaders Real Madrid by one point, could not find a way through against their Basque visitors.

Los Blancos face city rivals Atletico Madrid on Sunday at the Santiago Bernabeu and can potentially move four points clear at the top.

Girona's draw leaves them six points ahead of champions Barcelona, third, and they were left upset after Yangel Herrera had a goal ruled out for offside in the build-up.

The offside against Savinho occurred 36 seconds before the midfielder found the net, set up by the Brazilian winger, with Girona arguing VAR should not have intervened.

Some crosses had been half-cleared by Real Sociedad before Savinho scooped the ball to the back post for Herrera.

"The reality is that if there's a second, third phases (of play), VAR should not get involved, I think it's obvious," said Michel.

"Beyond the goal ruled out, I think it was a very, very difficult game ... and it's a good point."

Despite leading the league in goals scored, Michel Sanchez's side were largely kept at arm's length by La Real.

After Herrera's goal was disallowed, Real Sociedad's Mikel Oyarzabal also had one chalked off for a clearer offside infringement.

Alex Remiro made a solid save to deny Herrera in the final stages as the hosts were frustrated and Michel was sent off for complaining on the touchline.

Valery Fernandez missed a fine chance in stoppage time after Yan Couto scrapped hard to win the ball back and crossed for the Spanish winger.

Without La Liga's joint top goalscorer Artem Dovbyk, who watched from the stands after suffering knee discomfort according to Spanish reports, Girona did not shine in attack.

They will have the chance to make amends next weekend when they visit Real Madrid in a crunch showdown.

However coach Michel will not be in the dugout, while Herrera and Daley Blind were both booked and are also suspended for the key clash.

"I don't like that they sent me off, I protested, it's true, but I didn't lack respect for anyone," said Michel.

"The red card leaves me furious."

<h2>Roque red</h2>

Champions Barcelona took the lead against Alaves through Robert Lewandowski in the first half and doubled their advantage when Ilkay Gundogan volleyed home soon after the break.

Samu Omorodion pulled a goal back for the hosts before 18-year-old striker Roque pounced and a few minutes later was harshly dismissed.

Barcelona's victory helps them cut the gap on league leaders Real Madrid to seven points before Los Blancos face Atletico Madrid in a derby clash Sunday.

They have won both of their matches since Xavi announced last weekend he would leave the club at the end of the season.

Xavi selected Andreas Christensen in defensive midfield for the first time in his Barcelona career, with the Catalans still unable to find a reliable replacement for Sergio Busquets.

The Danish defender was solid and showed Xavi he is an option for the future in the role.

"He was comfortable, aggressive, didn't lose the ball, kept his eyes open -- we were good on transitions, he gave us discipline," Xavi told reporters.

Roque, who arrived in the January transfer window from Brazilian side Athletico Paranaense, was on the pitch less than 15 minutes after he was shown two yellow cards.

The second was for an innocuous challenge on Rafa Marin, but there was no video review as VAR cannot ask officials to check second yellow card incidents.

Barcelona coach Xavi said Friday La Liga was "completely adulterated" by rivals Real Madrid because of heavy criticism towards officials broadcast on the club's television channel.

Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti dismissed Xavi's words as "unprofessional" but Roque's red card will only add more fuel to the flames.

"We will appeal it because it's clear that it's an error, it's another error from the referee towards us," Xavi told DAZN.

"Evidently it's an unfair red card."

"We will not see [Messi vs Ronaldo], Ronaldo is in the final part of his recovery to join the group. We hope that in the next few days he can start working with the team. He will be absent from the game," said Castro as quoted by football news outlet GOAL. Ronaldo had issued a statement at the time of injury and had said: "I feel sad. I know you are sad too, especially the people who love Cristiano, but we have to see this in a good way. We have not cancelled the game, we want to push for the game and be back here. We will be back. I want to play for you. Don't be sad because I am sad, and I hope you understand the circumstances of a football player." Talking about the league standings, Al Nassr is currently second in the Saudi Pro League with 46 points from 19 games. Al-Hilal is at the top of the league with 53 points. As for Inter Miami, they ended 2023 MLS season on not a bright note. They have already been beaten by Al-Hilal 4-3 in the Riyadh Season Cup earlier in build up to their 2024 season already and will be looking to do better against Ronaldo-less Al Nassr on Thursday (Feb 1).

An epidemic has taken over Europe. Easier to consume than cocaine, crack is emerging as the preferred choice for addicts across the continent. Investigators say it is cheaper and is attracting more and more consumption. While cocaine consumption has remained steady in the past three years, the share of crack has increased rapidly.

Lautaro Martinez fired Inter Milan back to the top of Serie A with the only goal in Sunday's dramatic 1-0 win at Fiorentina, as depleted Napoli played out an uneventful goalless draw at Lazio.

Argentina forward Martinez glanced home the decisive goal in the 14th minute of an action-packed contest in Florence in which Nicolas Gonzalez wasted a late penalty for the hosts, who had Inter on the back foot for much of the game.

However it was a clash which ended with Inter one point ahead of Juventus, who were held by Empoli on Saturday, with a game in hand ahead of the two title rivals meeting at the San Siro next weekend.

"I can't say anything to these guys because we've won 17 matches from 21, scored 50 times and let in only 10. I can only applaud them," said Inter coach Simone Inzaghi to DAZN.

"Next week will be a match between two teams who play very high quality football... Juve are a team that you really need to face in your best form."

Martinez is now on 22 goals in all competitions for the season, the Inter captain's league tally of 19 in 21 matches putting him way ahead in the division's scoring charts.

Inter fans will have breathed a huge sigh of relief at the final whistle as the win was largely down to Fiorentina's poor attacking, with bad decisions going forward the order of the day for Vincenzo Italiano's side.

The Tuscan outfit missed the chance to take fourth and the final Champions League spot off Atalanta and stay fifth, two points off the money-spinning top-four positions.

Fiorentina thought they were set to snatch a point when Yann Sommer was penalised for punching M'Bala Nzola while trying to clear a speculative ball into the box.

But star attacker Gonzalez, who returned from the bench after six weeks on the sidelines, rolled a dreadful spot-kick at Sommer, their third missed penalty of the season.

"I'm disappointed that in matches like these we never seem to find that piece of play which can change the course of the match, or at least see that we not lose," said Italiano to DAZN.

"And we've got a sort of penalty curse which is starting to irritate me. It's not good enough."

<h2>Napoli's bore draw</h2>

Walter Mazzarri's Napoli stay ninth, 22 points behind Inter after not having a single shot on target in a dismal encounter at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.

Napoli were missing star striker Victor Osimhen to the Africa Cup of Nations while both Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Giovanni Simeone were suspended, leaving them short in attack.

It was the first time since 2012 that Napoli didn't work the goalkeeper in a league match, according to Opta, but despite their troubles the southern outfit are still only four points off the Champions League positions.

"I'm very satisfied with the performance because we were facing a very strong team... we had a lot of absences and there were players who hadn't played for ages who responded on the pitch," insisted Mazzarri to DAZN.

"Today was the confirmation that I have real men with me, who play together as a team."

Lazio were playing with the entire northern end of the stadium closed after fans racially abused Roma striker Romelu Lukaku earlier this month.

Maurizio Sarri's team stay sixth after barely creating anything themselves in the absence of suspended Italy attackers Ciro Immobile and Mattia Zaccagni.

Their only true moment of excitement came almost straight after half-time when Valentin Castellanos' beautiful overhead kick finish was ruled out for offside.&nbsp;

Earlier Verona moved out of the relegation zone after their 1-1 home draw with Frosinone, a point enough to move Marco Baroni's side up to 16th.

They are outside the bottom three thanks to their superior goal difference over Udinese and Cagliari, who sit just inside the drop zone after Friday's 2-1 home defeat to Torino.
