Three-time champions Spain could be barred from participating in Euro 2024 edition over government meddling in Spanish football association. FIFA and UEFA, football's governing bodies, have asked Spanish football association (REEF) about the involvement of government in daily work. The country could also lose its 2030 FIFA World Cup hosting rights as well.

According to the news outlet the Sun, Jose Manuel Rodriguez-Uribes, the president of Spain’s Supreme Sports Council, has sent a letter to both, UEFA and FIFA, explaining role of government in Spanish FA's working.&nbsp;

<ul>
	<li>On what legal and /or factual basis was the Commission appointed?</li>
	<li>Who makes up the Commission and who appointed its members?</li>
	<li>What is the Commission’s exact mandate?</li>
	<li>What powers does the Commission have?</li>
	<li>What relationship does the Commission have with the statutory decision-making bodies in the RFEF?</li>
</ul>

Failing to get a satisfactory answers, Spain could lose on its participation in the upcoming Euro 2024. The tournament is scheduled to be played in Germany from June 15. The month-long tournament has Spain in Group B alongside Italy, Croatia, and Albania.

Furthermore, Spanish football league LaLiga clubs Real Madrid and Barcelona could also be banned from taking part in next year's Champions League as cascading affect.

The government started to take part in football association's functions after Luis Rubiales' infamous kiss scandal in 2023 Women’s World Cup. Rubiales, 46, had resigned following global outrage after he forcibly kissed Women's World Cup star Jenni Hermoso last summer after the final.

He subsequently has also been facing probe regarding financial irregularities during his time in chare which saw Spanish Super Cup being transferred to Saudi Arabia in 2020.

Ahead of their important Premier League home game versus Wolverhampton Wanderers&nbsp;on Saturday (May 4), Manchester City were dealt a huge blow as goalkeeper Ederson is set to miss the game due to injury concerns. Ederson was subbed off at half-time in his side's 2-0 win at Nottingham Forest last weekend after sustaining a shoulder injury&nbsp;following a collision with Wily Boly of Nottingham. He didn't make a return and later left the stadium in a sling.

While the Athletic, via GOAL, has stated that Ederson's injury isn't very serious and he is expected to return during the end of the Premier League season, he is likely to miss the upcoming game versus the Wolves -- due to the lack of gap between the two games.

Premier League: Big blow for Man City as goalkeeper Ederson to miss Wolves clash - Reports

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag said he was happy to see Jadon Sancho, who is on loan from United at Borussia Dortmund, thrive. The 24-year-old winger produced a fine performance in Dortmund's 1-0 win in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final against Paris St Germain on Wednesday (May 1).

The England international joined United from Dortmund for 85 million euros ($90.87 million) in August 2021, signing a five-year deal, but he failed to hold down a regular spot and returned to Germany after becoming embroiled in a row with Ten Hag. "So let's say this: yesterday he played very good and he's a very good player. Yesterday he showed why Man United bought him and he showed he represents a high value for Man United, which is good," Ten Hag said. "I'm happy for Jadon, for the performance yesterday, and we'll see what is going to happen in the future." Also read | UCL: Dortmund coach Edin Terzic hails 'Big stage' player Jadon Sancho for win over PSG in first leg 'Work to do' As for United, Ten Hag said they had work to do in the transfer market in the summer transfer window if the team was to get back to its best. United are sixth in the Premier League standings with 54 points, 13 fewer than fourth-placed Aston Villa and six below Tottenham Hotspur in fifth place. The Old Trafford side have four matches left in the league season. Ten Hag flagged that United had suffered an alarming number of injuries, but they would still need new recruits after falling short of expectations. "(There's) always a lot of work, it's normal when you go into a transfer window, but the injuries had a big impact," Ten Hag told reporters ahead of Monday's Premier League clash at 14th-placed Crystal Palace. "We know also we are still below the levels from the expectations Man United has so we have to catch up and I'm now going into my fifth window — two windows quite okay, two we missed — so we have to make new improvements to the squad. "But here is a base of this squad that is very good." Midfielder Bruno Fernandes is a doubt for the trip to Selhurst Park, while forward Marcus Rashford's availability is still unclear. Rashford picked up an injury in the FA Cup semi-final against Championship side Coventry City, which United won on penalties after surrendering a 3-0 lead at Wembley. The forward, 26, has since missed the games against Sheffield United and Burnley. "Scott (McTominay) didn't train so far this week but I expect him back in training on Saturday and we have to see if he's 100% available or for a part of the game," the Dutchman said. "After the game (Burnley), we had an issue with Bruno. He is a doubt for Monday. We all know Bruno, never rule him out for any game. He will do his best to be available. "Jonny (Evans) returned today for team training. Tomorrow we are off and then two days until the game. (Anthony) Martial was partly in team training. "I can't tell (about Rashford). His issue hasn't healed so far."

Borussia Dortmund's Niclas Fuellkrug fired in a first-half goal to seal a 1-0 victory over visitors Paris St Germain in a compelling Champions League semi-final first leg on Wednesday. Nico Schlotterbeck floated a pass into Fuellkrug's path and the Germany forward controlled the ball with a perfect first touch before drilling a low shot past keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma in the 36th minute.

PSG, fresh from being crowned Ligue 1 champions and desperate to win their first ever Champions League trophy, found it hard going against a disciplined German defence, especially in the first half with forward Kylian Mbappe largely neutralised.

With the return leg in Paris next Tuesday, the winners of the tie will face either Bayern Munich or Real Madrid, who drew 2-2 in their first leg in Germany, in the final at Wembley on June 1.

"It was a well-deserved win, a good team performance," said Dortmund coach Edin Terzic. "We could have scored more goals, but so could they." "That's why the result is OK from my point of view. We ran a lot, but that's necessary in a game like this." "You have to earn your way to Wembley. All we need now is a draw in the second leg, but we also want to win next week."

The win also confirmed Germany will get a fifth qualifying spot for next season's Champions League, with Dortmund being the main beneficiaries at the moment, sitting in fifth place in the Bundesliga with three games left to play.

Dortmund went close just before halftime with Marcel Sabitzer but his shot was blocked by Donnaruma. The French side improved after the break and went agonisingly close to an equaliser in the 52nd minute with Mbappe curling a shot onto the far post and then Achraf Hakimi also hitting the woodwork on the rebound.

Four minutes later Fabian Ruiz saw his stooping header sail wide after being left completely unmarked in the box before Dortmund keeper Gregor Kobel kept out Ousmane Dembele's close range effort in the 71st.

Dortmund, winners in 1997 and looking to reach their first final since 2013, soaked up the pressure as PSG's Vitinha narrowly missed the target 10 minutes later.

Bayern Munich's hunt for a new manager has hit a new roadblock as the primary choice, Ralf Rangnick on Thursday (May 2), rejected the chance to join the Bavarian team. The former Manchester United manager said he was focused on seeing out his contract with the Austrian national team and leading them to Euro 2024 this summer.&nbsp;

Bayern had been discussing a deal with Rangnick which would involve him leaving the Austria post early.

"I'm the Austrian team coach with all my heart. This is not a rejection of Bayern, but rather a decision for my team and our common goals," Rangnick said.

<h2>Tuchel sacked by Bayern</h2>

In February, the record Bundesliga champions announced they had decided to end their collaboration with&nbsp;Thomas Tuchel at the end of the ongoing season despite his contract running till 2025.&nbsp;

Tuchel, the former Chelsea manager, took over the reins in March last year from Nagelsmann who was sacked rather unceremoniously by the former Bayern board. While Tuchel did lead Bayern to a Bundesliga title last season, he could not emulate a similar performance in the 23-24 season as Bayer Leverkusen won the title for the first time in their history.&nbsp;

Having crashed out of the other cup competitions as well, the only shot at silverware for Tuchel remains winning the Champions League. Bayern drew the first leg of the semifinal against Real Madrid 2-2 and will face the 14-time champions in the reverse fixture at the Bernabeu next week.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Bayern Munich's hunt for a new manager has hit a new roadblock as the primary choice, Ralf Rangnick on Thursday (May 2), rejected the chance to join the Bavarian team. The former Manchester United manager said he was focused on seeing out his contract with the Austrian national team and leading them to Euro 2024 this summer. Bayern had been discussing a deal with Rangnick which would involve him leaving the Austria post early. "I'm the Austrian team coach with all my heart. This is not a rejection of Bayern, but rather a decision for my team and our common goals," Rangnick said. "Our full concentration is on the European Championships. We will do everything we can to get as far as possible!," he added. West Ham United striker Michail Antonio has revealed what was said by Jurgen Klopp towards Mohamed Salah during the spat between two of Liverpool's finest. Antonio said the West Ham players had been talking about the touchline spat and came up with their own versions of the event.

Speaking on the&nbsp;Footballer’s Football Podcast,&nbsp;Antonio said Klopp didn't like Mo airing him dry when he was bringing the right-winger onto the match to grind out a win.&nbsp;

"Basically - this is not inside information, nobody has told me anything - but what I have heard is what the boys have been talking about on the training ground," said Antonio.&nbsp;

"As the [Liverpool] players come on, Klopp always gives them a big hug and says 'good luck', but when Mo came on he walked in a different direction and was doing his shinpads and stuff like that. Klopp has put his hand out to him and his hand was there for a bit and as Mo stopped doing what he was doing, he just slapped his [Klopp's] hand as a high five," revealed the West Ham striker.&nbsp;

Antonio, who scored the second goal for West Ham to equalise the tie, added that the Liverpool gaffer was a bit amused with the cold attitude displayed by Mo.&nbsp;

"Obviously Klopp didn’t like that and he was like, ‘Do you want to sit back down?’, basically saying, 'do you want to go on?'. And nobody has told me what Mo said back."

<h2>What actually happened?</h2>

Playing away from home at the London Stadium, Liverpool once again went a goal down as Jarrod Bowen scored in the 43rd minute. However, courtesy of a goal from Andy Robertson and an own goal from Alphonse Areola, the Merseyside Reds managed to steal the advantage.

Just when it looked like Klopp's men would walk away with a win, Antonio scored in the 77th minute to bring the hosts back into the contest. It was only after the equaliser that Klopp thought of bringing Salah on as the situation escalated between the duo.&nbsp;

Former Real Madrid Steve McManaman believes that 20-year-old Jude Bellingham has had a greater influence on the Los Blancos than Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo Nazario and Luis Figo.&nbsp;

The English midfielder arrived at one of the biggest clubs in the world last summer after a record-money move from Borussia Dortmund. Since then, he has stepped up on the big stage, routinely bailing out Real Madrid with his individual brilliance.&nbsp;

"Luis Figo came into the dressing room. R9 [Ronaldo Nazario], ‘El Phenomeno’ came into the dressing room. Zizou [Zinedine Zidane] came into the dressing room. Nobody has had an impact like he has [Bellingham] and he’s done it at the age of 20 year old. It’s phenomenal,"&nbsp;McManaman told TNT Sports.&nbsp;

McManaman, who made 158 appearances for Madrid in all competitions, having such high praise for Bellingham shows the level of footballer he has matured into, all at the ripe age of 20.&nbsp;

"He joined Real Madrid on a big-money signing at the start of the year at the age of 19. This was a transitional year for Real Madrid because Karim Benzema went, of course Eden Hazard, Asensio," added&nbsp;McManaman, who also sported the Liverpool jersey in his playing days.&nbsp;

"The fact that he’s taken to this role as he has done. Scoring in two Clasicos, winning the Super Copa, winning LaLiga – coasting to the league and now in the semi-finals of the Champions League all on his shoulders. What an absolute star."

<h2>Bellingham eyes UCL trophy</h2>

Bellingham is on course to win his first La Liga title with Madrid while battling for a Champions League trophy. He has already helped the Los Blancos win the Spanish Super Copa.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Bellingham will be next seen in action in Lal Liga against Cadiz before Bayern Munich arrive at the Bernabeu for the second leg of their Champions League tie with the fixture currently locked at 2-2.

Bellingham was taken off in the first leg at the Allianz Arena, with manager Carlo Ancelotti confirming that the youngster was struggling beyond the hour mark.&nbsp;

“Bellingham was just tired. “He couldn’t continue any more. I have enough good players on the bench. He will get back to his best performance. I think he was injured, which affected him, but today he wasn’t at his best. He will be back, for sure, and on Wednesday he will be at 100 per cent&nbsp;again,"&nbsp;Ancelotti said.&nbsp;

Tottenham Hotspur, who are already without defender Destiny Udogie, have been dealt a fresh blow as defender Ben Davies will also be out for the rest of the season with a calf injury, manager Ange Postecoglou said on Wednesday. Fifth-placed Spurs are still clinging on in the battle to finish in the top-four in the Premier League. They are on 60 points, seven behind Aston Villa, with two games in hand in the race for Champions League qualification.

Forward Timo Werner has also been ruled out of Thursday's trip to his former club Chelsea, who are ninth, 12 points behind Spurs. The 28-year-old German will miss the remaining games of the season after being injured against Arsenal on Sunday.

"Timo (Werner) with his hamstring -- he's only got two-and-a-half weeks to go so he will miss the rest of the season," the Australian manager told reporters. "Ben Davies got a calf injury from the (Arsenal) game and he'll miss the rest of the season as well."

Werner has scored two goals and registered three assists in 13 league games since signing on loan in January from Bundesliga side RB Leipzig. Versatile Welshman Davies, 31, has made 19 appearances for Spurs this season. Tottenham are hoping to bounce back from Sunday's 3-2 home defeat by Arsenal but face tough challenges ahead with fixtures against Liverpool and Manchester City to follow after the Chelsea clash.

Postecoglou's side had started the season strong but suffered their first loss at home to Chelsea in November. Asked if his side had shown progression in his first year in charge, the coach said: "Clearly, as clear as you want it to be, 20-20, definitely, 100 percent.

"What I see is us playing football, measuring ourselves against the best. My players have got real belief in what we are doing. That's all I need to see."

Attacking midfielder James Maddison was injured in the home defeat by Chelsea and since returning in January he has struggled to reach the heights he hit in Tottenham's impressive start to the campaign.

Asked about Maddison's form, Postecoglou said: "We've had a very disruptive season. He's another one that's had disruptions. First 10 games, he played every game and he was going really well. Then he picked up an injury, missed a lot of football and he's come back but we've had challenges as a team. "We haven't had any real fluency in terms of cohesion, games and starting line-ups. He's had to battle through that like a lot of them."

Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes has said that he will consider his future at the club but not before Euro 2024, to be held in Germany. Fernandes said, "So, if you want me to be very honest, if I have to think about not continuing in the Premier League, it won't be until after the Euros."

"We can end the season by winning the FA Cup, then we have the European Championship, which is very important for us," the United captain further opined.

In the first semifinal of the UEFA Champions League 2023-24&nbsp;between Bayern Munich and Real Madrid, in Germany, the hosts had a massive opportunity to end with a 3-1 scoreline, after a lead of 2-1, but settled for a 2-2 draw versus the Spainish giants. After the match, Bayern boss Thomas Tuchel has underlined the importance of 'belief' in the camp ahead of the second semifinal in Madrid, on May 9.&nbsp;

Following the first leg, Tuchel said, "It's important we believe." He stated, "Of course it's possible [to win in Madrid]. It's still a 50-50 match and I think we will be able to great chances there. The goal is absolutely clear, we need to win. We need to be brave and full of confidence and very clinical in our game."

<h2>'Real Madrid have done it before, we are not first team to which it happens'</h2>

Bayern were 2-1 up with quick goals after half-time, but Tuchel was left frustrated after his team missed a lot of chances to end with a favourable result. He opined, "The result is the result, it doesn't make any sense to discuss to spend much time about it. Real Madrid have done it before, scoring two goals out of two chances. We are not first team to which it happens. They are clinical and have the patience to wait for it. Real Madrid does this to teams so we should not be disappointed for too long."

He added, "We could have scored a third but we weren't clinical enough. We had enough chances to score the third and committed some errors. The situation is clear, we go there and the winner takes it all."

On the other hand, Madrid boss Carlo&nbsp;Ancelotti claimed his team wasn't at their usual best despite Madrid, the title-contenders, preventing a win for the opposition (thanks to Vinícius Júnior twin strikes in the contest).&nbsp;

The second leg is interestingly poised with the winner to take it all. Bayern will bank on in-form Harry Kane, who also scored in the first semifinal, to continue his goal-scoring spree but beating Madrid at home will be a herculean task for the German club.

After the match, Bayern boss Thomas Tuchel has underlined the importance of 'belief' in the camp ahead of the second semifinal in Madrid, on May 9. Following the first leg, Tuchel said, "It's important we believe." He stated, "Of course it's possible [to win in Madrid]. It's still a 50-50 match and I think we will be able to great chances there. The goal is absolutely clear, we need to win. We need to be brave and full of confidence and very clinical in our game." He opined, "The result is the result, it doesn't make any sense to discuss to spend much time about it. Real Madrid have done it before, scoring two goals out of two chances. We are not first team to which it happens. They are clinical and have the patience to wait for it. Real Madrid does this to teams so we should not be disappointed for too long." He added, "We could have scored a third but we weren't clinical enough. We had enough chances to score the third and committed some errors. The situation is clear, we go there and the winner takes it all." On the other hand, Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti claimed his team wasn't at their usual best despite Madrid, the title-contenders, preventing a win for the opposition (thanks to Vinícius Júnior twin strikes in the contest). The United States and Mexico withdrew their joint bid for the 2027 Women's World Cup on Monday, just weeks before FIFA is due to vote to award the tournament at a meeting in Bangkok.

In a joint statement from the US and Mexico football federations, the two governing bodies said they would now switch focus towards mounting a successful bid for the 2031 tournament.

The shock decision comes as FIFA officials prepare to hold a vote at the global governing body's Congress in Bangkok on May 17 to decide the 2027 hosts.

The US and Mexico withdrawal leaves two rival bids vying for the tournament -- a joint bid from Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands and a solo bid from Brazil.

The end of the US-Mexico bid came after FIFA said earlier on Monday that the 2027 tournament hosts would for the first time be decided by an open vote when the FIFA Congress convenes in Thailand next month.

The US had been bidding to stage the women's football flagship event for the third time after hosting the tournament successfully on its own in 1999 and 2003.

Had the US-Mexico bid for 2027 been successful, it would have meant another large-scale sporting event taking place in North America in what has become a crowded calendar for the region.

The United States, Mexico and Canada are already gearing up to stage the men's 2026 World Cup, while Los Angeles is preparing to host the 2028 Olympics.&nbsp;

The United States is also due to host next year's expanded FIFA Club World Cup, and is also staging this year's 16-team Copa America.

US Soccer said waiting until 2031 would give tournament organizers more breathing space to plan for the tournament while absorbing lessons from the region's staging of the 2026 men's World Cup.

"Hosting a World Cup tournament is a huge undertaking -- and having additional time to prepare allows us to maximize its impact across the globe," US Soccer President Cindy Parlow Cone said in a statement.&nbsp;

"I'm proud of our commitment to provide equitable experiences for the players, fans and all our stakeholders.&nbsp;

"Shifting our bid will enable us to host a record-breaking Women's World Cup in 2031 that will help to grow and raise the level of the women's game both here at home as well as across the globe." &nbsp;

Mexico Football Federation chief Ivar Sisniega echoed Parlow Cone's position.

"After careful analysis we feel that moving our bid back to 2031 will allow us to promote and build up to the most successful Women's World Cup ever," Sisniega said.&nbsp;

"The strength and universality of our professional women's leagues, coupled with our experience from organizing the 2026 World Cup, means that we will be able to provide the best infrastructure as well as an enthusiastic fan base that will make all the participating teams feel at home and to put together a World Cup that will contribute to the continued growth of women's football."

Last year's women's World Cup was held in Australia and New Zealand.&nbsp;

The last time the tournament was held in North America was when Canada hosted in 2015.

The USA are the most successful nation in the women's game having won the World Cup on four occasions.

USA, Mexico withdraw joint bid to host 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup

Spain's government on Tuesday appointed former national squad coach Vicente del Bosque as head of a new committee supervising the country's scandal-ridden RFEF soccer federation, Sports Minister Pilar Alegria said. Spain, which will co-host the 2030 World Cup, last week announced the creation of a special committee to oversee RFEF until the governing body holds new elections. FIFA and UEFA said they were closely monitoring the situation with great concern.

The move followed months of scandals including a corruption investigation and the dismissal of its chief Luis Rubiales after he planted an unsolicited kiss on the mouth of player Jenni Hermoso during the on-pitch awards ceremony after the Spanish women's World Cup triumph in Sydney last year. Del Bosque led the Spanish men's team to their first World Cup title in 2010 and followed that up by clinching Spain's second successive European Championship two years later.

Manchester United are not expecting any offers for star striker Marcus Rashford in the summers, believing there is no market for the player this summer. Notably, the Red Devils -- who have no chance left of finishing in the top four in the Premier League -- didn't see the best of Rashford this season, where he has scored seven PL goals -- 10 less than he managed in 2022-23.

Talking about the club's financial position means that they would consider bids of $87.8 million for Rashford if they were received, however, they are not expecting any team to come at par with the valuation. In addition, as per a report in ESPN, United are not actively looking to offload the Englishman. There is a feeling at Old Trafford that only the French club Paris Saint Germain (PSG) can meet United's valuation for Rashford, however, the Erik Ten Hag-led side&nbsp;has&nbsp;been made aware that he is not on their list of priorities to replace Kylian Mbappé this summer. Mbappé is likely to join Real Madrid at the end of the season.

Speaking of Rashford, he has not had the best of runs this season. The English striker has been a pale shadow of himself, especially his glorious run in 2022-23, with only 7 goals in the PL season. He was also involved in the Belfast clubbing controversy, early this year.&nbsp;

Rashford's exit would boost United's finances because, as an academy graduate, the fee would represent pure profit on the books and assist the famed club to stay within profit and sustainability rules (PSR). Another&nbsp;academy graduate, Mason Greenwood, is also in line to depart this summer with the club seeking a permanent deal for the youngster.

Greenwood has netted as many as 10 goals on loan at Getafe this season. However, it is&nbsp;unlikely the Spanish team will be able to fund a permanent transfer.&nbsp;

Ahead of the UEFA Champions League Real Madrid-Bayern Munich high-voltage semifinal clash, i.e. the first leg, Madrid boss Carlo&nbsp;Ancelotti has insisted that his side isn't taking their opposition lightly despite the German club's&nbsp;poor domestic season. Ancelotti, who has won the UCL four times, further&nbsp;labelled the German side 'dangerous'&nbsp;prior to&nbsp;the first leg at the Allianz Arena on Tuesday. Madrid are coming into this game as favourites after eliminating&nbsp;holders Manchester City in the last round.

Before the semifinal tie, Ancelotti said in a news conference, "We're preparing to play a big team with lots of qualities. We are confident and have faith but we have respect for Bayern Munich. They haven't played a fantastic season in the Bundesliga but they played very well in two matches against Arsenal. This shows the quality of this club."&nbsp;

The Italian manager further added, "They are strong in transition, they can play in different ways and are very dangerous. We need to focus and take ourselves to the final, that's our goal."

Meanwhile, Madrid midfielder&nbsp;Federico Valverde also played down his side's 'favourites' tag and acknowledged that Bayern's history -- including six wins -- makes them a tough opposition, just as big as Pep Guardiola's Man City.&nbsp;

Valverde said, "All the matches are complicated in this competition. All the teams deserve respect, Bayern Munich above all. The same as Real Madrid they always make it until the end. We respect them in the same way we respect Manchester City. We need to show great performances with the quality that we have and we want to win this title.

"We need to have faith and confidence in all parts of the team. We want to make the final and that's what we fight for," he further highlighted.

The first leg of the semifinal will take place at the Allianz Arena in Munich, Germany. Both teams will be eager to make early inroads in the marquee semifinal game.

Manchester City took another step in their bid to win a fourth consecutive Premier League title with a 2-0 victory over relegation-threatened Nottingham Forest on Sunday (April 28), with Josko Gvardiol and Erling Haaland on target.

Pep Guardiola's men kept the pressure on leaders Arsenal, pulling to within a point of the Gunners -- who held on to win 3-2 at Tottenham Hotspur earlier in the day -- in the table with a game in hand.

Forest had matched City in a nervous first half at the sundrenched City Ground before Gvardiol got the holders on the scoreboard with his second career league goal when he headed in Kevin De Bruyne's corner kick from the near post in the 32nd minute. Forest had only 10 men on the pitch at the time following an injury to Neco Williams.

Haaland made a quick impact when he entered the game as a substitute in his first action since missing two matches with a muscle injury, scoring a league-leading 21st goal of the season from another De Bruyne assist.

Premier League: Manchester City stay close to table-toppers Arsenal with win over Nottingham Forest

Paris Saint-Germain are hoping their latest Ligue 1 title, secured on Sunday with three games to spare, will be just the first leg of a historic treble with a Champions League semi-final to come and the French Cup final to look forward to as well.

It is PSG's 12th French title, at least two more than any other team, and it is also their 10th in 12 seasons, which goes to show how the footballing landscape in the country has been transformed since the Qatari takeover of the club in 2011.

The extent of PSG's financial advantage over the rest of French football is crushing and means ending each season as champions is effectively a minimum requirement.

When analysts Deloitte published their list of the top-earning football clubs in the world for last year, PSG were third with revenue of just over 800 million euros ($855m). The only other French team in the top 20 was Marseille, with 258 million euros.

UEFA's own European Club Finance report, published in February, revealed PSG as having the second highest wage bill on the continent behind only Barcelona, at over 600 million euros.

Those wage costs will have changed significantly this season, following the departures of Lionel Messi and Neymar, but a recent study by sports daily L'Equipe claimed that the 10 highest-paid players in Ligue 1 just now all play in Paris.

In that context, it is almost impossible for anyone to compete with Luis Enrique's team domestically, but the Spanish coach still deserves credit.

"Given our history and our squad, we are the favourites, although not everybody manages to do it, especially with so many games still to play," he said last week.

"But I have said since the very first day that we are the favourites, that we have the best squad and the biggest budget. It is almost an obligation."

<h2>- Transition from Messi and Neymar -</h2>

He took over a team set for a period of transition in the post-Messi and Neymar era.

PSG did not convince in winning the league last season, losing seven games and only pipping Lens by a point.

This campaign has, to borrow a French expression, not always been like a long, peaceful river.

Luis Enrique had to incorporate a raft of new signings and has had to deal with the awkward situation surrounding Kylian Mbappe's future.

Mbappe was frozen out at the start of the campaign with the club putting pressure on him to sign a new deal or agree to be sold rather than simply run down the last year of his contract.

That partly explains why PSG won just three of their first seven Ligue 1 games.

However, they have since picked up the pace and their only league loss so far remains a 3-2 home defeat against Nice in September.

Ousmane Dembele has been excellent since arriving from Barcelona, playing mainly on the right wing, and Bradley Barcola has starred on the other side.

Teenager Warren Zaire-Emery has been a fixture in midfield and earned a call-up to the full France squad, while Portuguese creator Vitinha has arguably been PSG's best player.

But then there is Mbappe, who has 43 goals in all competitions, and that despite being used sparingly in the league over the last two months since informing the club of his decision to leave on a free at the end of the season.

Mbappe has completed 90 minutes just twice in PSG's last 11 league games.

Luis Enrique has justified that by saying he needs to prepare for a future without his star player and try alternatives. But in the meantime, PSG must make the most of having the France captain in their ranks.

That they are now a better, more balanced team without having to accommodate Messi and Neymar is no surprise.

Although they wobbled in the Champions League group stage, they qualified for the knockout phase and took four points against Borussia Dortmund along the way. They must now be favourites to beat the Germans in the upcoming semi-final.

That would allow them to finish the Mbappe era with a French Cup final against Lyon on May 25 and the Champions League final a week later, with the prospect of a clean sweep of trophies in sight.

"Of course that's something we are talking about. It's a source of motivation for us," Luis Enrique said.

"It will be a long, winding road to get there. We will need to stay fully focused until the end of the season.

PSG, Kylian Mbappe look for treble after securing 12th Ligue 1 title

England international Harry Kane, who plays for Bayern Munich in German football league Bundesliga, has set a new personal best of most goals scored in a season. Kane now has 42 goals in all competitions (Bundesliga and Champions League) in the ongoing 2023-24 season after scoring a brace against Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday (Apr 28).

Kane's previous personal best for most goals scored - 41- in a season had come in 2017-18 while playing for the English Premier League (PL) side Tottenham Hotspur. He had scored 30 goals in the PL, seven in the Champions League and rest in other competitions.

This season he has scored 35 goals in 31 Bundesliga games while seven in Champions League. He is also nearing Robert Lewandowski's infamous 41-goal record in one season in Bundesliga.

"It's possible, but obviously I have to get a move on," Kane said on possibility to reach Lewandowski's record.

"I've got to maybe score a few goals next week. It's there, it's in touching distance," he added.

As for Bayern, the season has been a forgetful one as they failed to win the Bundesliga title for the first time in 12 years. They also faced a humiliating defeat in German Cup third-round against third-tier Saarbrucken.

The only hope for them to win any silverware is the Champions League where they beat Premier League leaders and possible winners of ongoing season Arsenal in quarterfinal earlier this month.

Bayern now face LaLiga leaders Real Madrid in the semifinal first leg on Tuesday (April 30) and Kane would be itching to make his first season memorable in Germany.

He had transferred to Bayern ahead of the start of the ongoing season after spending 12 seasons at Tottenham from 2011-12 to 2022-23. He appeared in 320 PL games and scored 213 goals - all for the Spurs and second most in the league behind Alan Shearer's 260 goals in 441 games.

Lionel Messi continued his rich vein of scoring in MLS, finding the target twice as league leaders Inter Miami came from behind for a 4-1 win at the New England Revolution on Saturday.

With his brace Messi, the top scorer in MLS, took his tally to nine goals from seven appearances this season.

A crowd over 65,612 turned up at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, the stadium the Revolution share with the NFL's New England Patriots, to see the Argentine World Cup winner.

New England, who had been hit by a virus in the build-up to the game and bottom of the Eastern Conference, delighted the bumper home crowd after just 40 seconds through an Argentine of their own -- Tomas Chancalay.

Miami defender Nicolas Freire gave the ball away to Spanish midfielder Carles Gil who clipped a ball over the top to Chancalay, who spotted Drake Callender well off his line and chipped it over the stranded Miami keeper for the opening goal.

Messi got Miami back on level terms in the 32nd minute when he was found by Robert Taylor's through pass and the 36-year-old made no mistake, slotting home.

The eight-times Ballon d'Or winner struck again to put Miami ahead in the 68th minute when he collected a superb defence-splitting pass from his former Barcelona team-mate Sergio Busquets and finished with his usual ease.

Miami added two more in the final stages -- both created by Messi.

Substitute Benjamin Cremaschi made it 3-1 in the 83rd minute, pouncing after a Messi shot was parried out. Luis Suarez completed the scoring, finding the top corner after a pass inside from Messi.

Miami have won three straight games since their exit from the CONCACAF Champions Cup at the hands of Mexican club Monterrey with Messi scoring five times in that run which includes wins at Kansas City and at home to Nashville.

Coach Gerardo Martino said the team were starting to come together as he had hoped.

"The Kansas City game was a key for us, because we had just been eliminated by Monterrey and the team showed their character. Now we have three wins in a row and it is getting more solid every time," he said.

Martino said the rest of his players had now got used to playing in front of the large crowds that Messi is drawing.

"We've handled it well. That was a learning curve last season and now we are dealing with it well," he added.

New England coach Caleb Porter said he was disappointed that his defenders had allowed Messi the space for his goals but said the Argentine had shown his class in making them pay.

<h2>- 'That's Messi' -</h2>

"You have to look at both those moments because I thought they were able to find two goals when we felt pretty good about the way we were limiting their effectiveness in creating clear chances," he said.

"But you know, that's Messi, he finds two goals out of nowhere and it exposes the detail in those moments from us.

"I don't think he had a ton of touches and effectiveness early in the game but, you know, that's kind of him -- he lulls you....we can't allow a ball to be popped through the back four and find him twice," he added.

Elsewhere, Christian Benteke scored twice for D.C. United as they enjoyed a 2-1 win at home to the Seattle Sounders.

The Sounders led 1-0 through a Leo Chu goal but had goalkeeper Stefan Frei sent off in the 28th minute after he brought down Jared Stroud in the box,

Benteke put away the penalty and then won the game with a trademark header at the back post on the stroke of half-time.

Real Salt Lake take over at the top of the Western Conference after handing the Philadelphia Union their first loss of the season with a 2-1 win in Pennsylvania.

RSL move above the Los Angeles Galaxy who fell to a 2-0 defeat at Austin while defending MLS champions Columbus Crew were held to a goalless draw at home to Montreal.

Crew coach Wilfried Nancy rotated his line-up ahead of Wednesday's CONCACAF Champions Cup semi-final second leg at Monterrey.

Premier League: VIDEO | 'There is going to be fire,' Liverpool's Mo Salah on feud with manager Jurgen Klopp

Premier League (PL) side Manchester United's forward Marcus Rashford has called out the criticism directed towards him in the ongoing season as abuse. Rashford hasn't been in best of&nbsp;form this season, scoring just seven goals in 26 games he has played.

Overall, Rashford has scored just eight goals in 40 games in the ongoing year. Notably, he had signed a new contract to stay with the side for three more years earlier in the summer. Rashford's comments came as a reply to a post on the social media handle X&nbsp;criticising&nbsp;the treatment to Rashford as cruel.

The 26-year-old England international, in reply, wrote: "It is abuse and has been for months. Enough is enough."

Rashford, however, isn't having the best of the season both on and off the field. He was benched by manager Erik ten Hag for two games after a poor outing during Manchester United's 1-0 defeat against Newcastle in December.

In November, his birthday celebration after a humiliating 3-0 defeat against arch-rivals Manchester City was termed unacceptable by the Dutch manager.

In January too, he was reprimanded by Ten Hag for missing a practice ahead of FA Cup fixture against Newport County. He had missed the training because of his trip to a nightclub in Belfast, Northern Ireland a night before.

Currently, Rashford is out with injury he had suffered during the win over Coventry in FA Cup semifinal. He had also missed the match against Sheffield United on Wednesday (Apr 24) which Manchester had won 4-2.

Manchester United are sixth on the points table with 16 wins, five draws and 12 losses from 33 games played. They still have five more games left in the season and make a push for top four to get a place in next year's Champions League.
