Manchester City defender Josko Gvardiol struggled to find his feet at the Premier League club but is now growing in confidence after his goal-scoring exploits in the title run-in, manager Pep Guardiola said. The 22-year-old left back joined the treble winners from German club RB Leipzig in August, signing a five-year deal for a reported fee of 90 million euros ($97 million).

The Croatian international, who had not scored in his previous 32 appearances for City, has now netted five times in his last seven matches to help his side's push towards a record fourth successive title. "There is an aspect in football and in life and that is confidence, confidence when you do things and it's game time, a lot of games and talking about the not proper things that you do and the good things," Guardiola told reporters after Saturday's 4-0 thrashing of Fulham.

"And you cannot forget it is his first Premier League season... so it is not easy to handle it and he struggled in the beginning a little bit, because he came into a team who had just won the treble and he was a little bit shy. "He signed for many, many years and he has proved to himself that he can do it and play with us."

Guardiola gave his players three days off after their 5-1 home win over Wolverhampton Wanderers this month. "On the first day, he (Gvardiol) went into the training centre to make a recovery, so his focus is football and he wants to be better and better and when this happens, you have something special on your hands," the Spaniard said.

In what comes a major security breach, a YouTube prankster who had previously crashed the BAFTAs, managed to sneak past the security apparatus and into the Manchester United team bus, following their 4-0 defeat at Selhurst Park on Monday (May 6), according to a report in The Athletic. The YouTuber, going by the moniker of Lizwani, was reportedly dressed in a United tracksuit as he entered the bus at Crystal Palace's home stadium. Not only did Lizwani manage to sneak past the security guards but he also found a seat on the bus as Erik ten Hag's side prepared to head back to Manchester. He was only spotted afterwards by United's security guards and peacefully removed from the bus. While the matter was resolved 'amicably', those involved in the matter have described it as a substantial security breach. The Premier League has sent a diktat to all 20 clubs, warning them to be on the lookout for repeats. Also read | ‘They don’t have knowledge’: Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag slams pundits criticising him Meanwhile, Palace have launched an investigation. CCTV footage is being examined by the club officials, in an attempt to scrutinise the prankster's movements and ascertain how he was able to pull off the rather dangerous stunt. United were outplayed in front of a vociferous Selhurst Park as Oliver Glasner's men toyed with the record Premier League champions. Ten Hag was left scratching his head as United looked shaky, ginger and too timid to take on the technically superior Palace players. Lizwani's BAFTA stunt Notably, Lizwani made headlines in March when he sneaked onto the stage as the cast and crew of Oppenheimer received their BAFTA award for best film. He managed to stand alongside the likes of director Christopher Nolan, actor Cillian Murphy and producer Emma Thomas. The YouTuber claimed that he remained at the BAFTAs for over an hour before the event security caught him. He was handed over to the police who made him delete the footage he had taken on the night. Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has hit back at pundits amid the mounting criticism against him. Ten Hag said most of those speaking about his team didn't have any knowledge of the game or about managing a football team.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has hit back at pundits amid the mounting criticism against him. Ten Hag said most of those speaking about his team didn't have any knowledge of the game or about managing a football team. Ten Hag's statement comes ahead of United's Super Sunday clash against Arsenal at Old Trafford. A win could derail Arsenal's title charge while a loss could be the final nail in the coffin for Ten Hag's departure from United. "In almost every game except Palace, they have fought. There is a good team spirit. We saw it against Brentford, Chelsea, Liverpool, Coventry until 70 minutes," said Ten Hag during the press conference. "They were resilient against Sheffield United, and the physical output against Burnley, their third game in six days, was incredible. I see some comments (from pundits). Either they don't have any knowledge of football or managing a football team," he added. United need to win their remaining matches to stay in contention for securing a place in European football next season. While a spot in the Champions League looks impossible, United could still push for a place in the Conference League. Also read | Jose Mourinho admits Man United "still have couple of players" he didn't want at the club Ten Hag's previous outburst This is not the first instance when the Dutchman has had a go at those criticising him for United's woeful season. Last month, Ten Hag hit out at media, calling their assessment of United's FA Cup semifinal victory over Coventry City as "embarrassing". The United team came under scrutiny despite advancing to the final after blowing away a 3-0 lead before a controversial VAR call bailed them out. Ten Hag was intensely scrutinised by the media as United once again failed to play a convincing brand of football. "One question was: "Is it embarrassing? No, the reaction from you [the media] was embarrassing," said Ten Hag. "Top football is about results, we made it to a final and we deserved it, not only by this game but also the other games. We lost control for 20 minutes, we also had bad luck. We were very lucky in the end, it is clear," he added. The FA Cup remains the sole saving grace for United as they face Manchester City in the final later this month. As for the Premier League, the record champions languish at the eighth spot in the points table with 54 points. (With inputs from agencies)

‘Matter of days’: Arne Slot sheds light on potential Liverpool move in summer

Xavi Alonso-managed Bayer Leverkusen staged a stunning late comeback to settle for a 2-2 stalemate versus Roma in their UEFA Europa League semifinal second leg on Thursday (May 9). With this, they not only qualified for the Europa League final -- having already defeated Roma 2-0 in the first leg -- where they will face Atlanta, but the German club also clinched a massive European record for being the team who have gone undefeated for the most number of games (49).

Leverkusen went past SL Benfica's 59-year-old strong record (48) and will now look to make it 50 unbeaten games in a row with a win in the Europa League final against Atlanta on May 23. Meanwhile, Atlanta went past Marseille 3-0 (4-1 on aggregate) in the second semifinal.

Talking about Leverkusen's astonishing record, they achieved it by overcoming a 2-0 deficit from Roma. Roma got into the lead soon after conceding&nbsp;two goals from the penalty spot by Leanrdo Parades. However, Leverkusen's knack for staging a late comeback continued as they were helped by an own goal from Roma's Gianluca Mancini and a stoppage-time goal from Josep Stanicic.

<h2>Treble in sight for Leverkusen</h2>

Roma got into the lead soon after conceding two goals from the penalty spot by Leanrdo Parades. However, Leverkusen's knack for staging a late comeback continued as they were helped by an own goal from Roma's Gianluca Mancini and a stoppage-time goal from Josep Stanicic. Bayer Leverkusen attain MASSIVE European record with last-minute stalemate vs Roma, enter Europa League final

Atalanta's Ademola Lookman, Matteo Ruggeri and El Bilal Toure all got on the scoresheet to send the Italians to their first Europa League final with a 3-0 win over Olympique de Marseille for a 4-1 aggregate victory on Thursday. The Italians will meet Bayer Leverkusen, who overcame AS Roma, in their first European final in Dublin on May 22. Lookman put Atalanta ahead in the semi-final second leg on the half-hour with a long-range strike past Pao Lopez before setting up Ruggeri to net seven minutes after the break.

Atalanta's repeated attacks, with Gianluca Scamacca and Davide Zappacosta threatening, overwhelmed the visitors, who had few chances, and substitute Toure put the nail in Marseille's coffin with their third four minutes into added time. "My first goal in Bergamo is a very big emotion," Ruggeri told SkySports Italia. "Now we can dream with our eyes open that we're in the final. It's a moment to celebrate with our people."

Atalanta are aiming for a trophy double as they also face Juventus in the Italian Cup final on Wednesday, with their 1963 Coppa Italia triumph being their only major silverware.

Regarding the Europa League, coach Gian Piero Gasperini told a press conference: "It will be a historic occasion for a team like ours who don't have the numbers (of fans) to win. It's really incredible but it bodes well for everyone.

"Numbers seem to be important, it seems that you have to have Super Leagues, but the example of Atalanta can give hope. Football is beautiful because of meritocracy, not because of acquired rights," he added.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp ended speculations surrounding the exit of Uruguayan striker Darwin Nunez as the club nears the end of the current Premier League season. Nunez, who was signed from Benfica in 2022 has failed to put down a marker during his two-year spell at the club having often missed big chances in big matches. The most recent example was during defeats to Atalanta, Manchester United and notable other big games which has seen him on the receiving end of huge criticism.

“There is no speculation on his future. That must be external speculation”.

“Darwin was not happy missing that chance and it happens. You help him if you can, but it’s part of a footballer’s career,” Klopp said on Nunez’s future at the club.

During the years at the club, Nunez has been a focal point of criticism and has scored 33 goals in all competitions. During the same period, Erling Haaland scored 88 goals for Manchester City when he came from Borussia Dortmund in 2022. The 24-year-old’s time at the club has also been rattled with injuries which has seen him sit on the sidelines.

According to former players and pundits, Nunez is the weak link in the final third for the Reds which has cost them points. Premier League: There is no speculation, says Jurgen Klopp on Darwin Nunez's potential Liverpool exit

With little over a week&nbsp;to go&nbsp;before the Premier League season’s conclusion, Arsenal will be optimistic to win the title and end their two-decade wait to lift the English football’s holy grail. Arsenal&nbsp;with&nbsp;two matches to go are on the brink of lifting the title&nbsp;but&nbsp;that won’t happen without a helping hand. Sitting&nbsp;top&nbsp;of the Premier League standings at the time of writing, Arsenal have 83 points from 36 matches&nbsp;while&nbsp;Manchester City in second place have 82 points from 35&nbsp;matches.&nbsp;

<h2>What needs to happen for Arsenal to win the Premier League?</h2>

The odds remain against the Gunners winning the Premier League title as Manchester City hold their fate in their own hands. Three wins in three matches for Pep Guardiola’s men will see them get crowned champions, having no bearing on what Arsenal do in their remaining two&nbsp;matches. Considering the best scenario for Mikel Arteta’s men, they need to win both their matches and hope Man City don’t surpass their points tally. &nbsp;

This&nbsp;would mean Arsenal finish on 89 points while Man City need to finish on 88 points or fewer. For City to finish with that point, they should lose at least one match or draw two&nbsp;matches&nbsp;in their remaining three&nbsp;matches.&nbsp;

Man City’s three matches remaining include Fulham (Saturday), Spurs (Tuesday) and West Ham United (May 18). Arsenal could be given a big helping hand by arch-rivals Spurs if they beat Man City on Tuesday, but having lost four consecutive&nbsp;matches&nbsp;the result is&nbsp;highly unlikely.

<h2>What happens if both&nbsp;City,&nbsp;Arsenal end with the same points?</h2>

In case&nbsp;both Man City and Arsenal end with similar&nbsp;points, then the Premier League title will be decided on goal difference (GD). As things stand, Arsenal have a superior goal difference of +60&nbsp;while for Man City it is +54. Much will depend on how many goals City and Arsenal score to win their matches in the remainder of the season. Interestingly, Man City remain the only team in the history of the Premier League to win the title on GD&nbsp;having&nbsp;done so in the 2011-12 season when they finished level with Man United on 89 points each.&nbsp;

<h2>Can Arsenal afford to draw against Manchester United?</h2>

Arsenal take on Man City’s arch-rivals Manchester United on Sunday at Old Trafford&nbsp;in a high-voltage clash.&nbsp;In case Arsenal draw the match, it will be big dents for their Premier League title challenge as they will only reach a maximum of 87 points, meaning City would need only five points to win from their remaining three matches. While this favours Man City, Arsenal can still win the title with a draw against United but will need both Spurs and West Ham to take points away from the defending champions.&nbsp;

Champions League Final: Real Madrid's Aurélien Tchouaméni faces race against time to be fit for summit clash

Real Madrid showed they remain Europe's comeback kings as Joselu's late double rescued them from the brink of elimination to reach the Champions League final with a dramatic 2-1 second-leg win over Bayern Munich at Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday. A 4-3 aggregate victory sealed Real's progress to a remarkable sixth Champions League final&nbsp;in&nbsp;10&nbsp;years and they will bid for a record-extending 15th title against Borussia Dortmund at Wembley on June 1.

In a repeat of their spectacular semi-final comeback win over Manchester City two years ago, they saw their opponents take the lead after Bayern substitute Alphonso Davies fired home a stunning strike from a counter attack in the 68th minute.

But Joselu climbed off the bench to equalise following a calamitous error from Manuel Neuer in the 88th minute and, two minutes later, he shinned a second into the Bayern goal from a cross by Antonio Ruediger.

The effort was first ruled out for an apparent offside, but the goal was given following a VAR check. "We've seen it a lot of times this season when it looked as though we're dead and buried ... it doesn’t matter who scores the goals but someone always manages it... that mentality of never say die," Jude Bellingham, who will play against his former club in the final, told TNT Sports.

Real dominated proceedings, but misfired with several chances as a gritty Bayern put their domestic woes aside to almost eliminate the Spaniards in their own back yard.

Davies, who came off the bench early in the first half in place of injured Serge Gnabry, opened the scoring in spectacular fashion, cutting back on his right foot and curling an unstoppable bullet of a shot into the far corner on a counter-attack.

NEUER FUMBLE

But Real, who were the better side throughout the game, piled on the pressure with Vinicius Jr tormenting the visitors down the left channel. The Brazilian glided past Matthijs De Ligt and Joshua Kimmich effortlessly and created a number chances for himself and his team mates, who were denied several times by an inspired Neuer.

The Bayern keeper looked on course to be man of the match as he weathered a storm, but with minutes remaining he fumbled a Vinicius strike from the edge of the box to gift Joselu the equaliser. The goal recharged a raucous Santiago Bernabeu under their spectacular new roof and two minutes later Real worked their European magic again, snatching a deserved winner that fired the Spanish giants into another final.

Bayern made a late push for an equaliser which they thought they had found when defender De Ligt rifled the ball home deep in added time.

But play had already been stopped after the linesman flagged for a debatable offside in the build-up, leading Bayern's players and bench to complain vociferously to the referee and his assistants. "We all know the rules and it's clear that, if it's not an obvious offside, you have to let it play. It was a disgraceful call," De Ligt said.

With Bayer Leverkusen ending Bayern's 11-year Bundesliga reign by securing the league title last month, the six-times European Cup winners had only one trophy left to fight for this season. "We are almost through, it's almost there and there was a very unusual mistake from our best player for the equaliser then we conceded the second one in stoppage time," Bayern boss Thomas Tuchel said.

"Then we scored one and there was a disastrous decision from the linesman and the referee. It feels like a betrayal in the end."

Real Madrid stun Bayern Munich with late fightback to enter UEFA Champions League final

It was yet another dramatic Champions League evening at Real Madrid’s famous home&nbsp;Santiago&nbsp;Bernabéu&nbsp;as&nbsp;the hosts booked their place in the final for a record 18th time in the competition’s history Wednesday (May 8).

An evening highlighted by a stoppage winner from Joselu for Real Madrid could have had more drama, had referee Szymon Marciniak allowed Bayern Munich’s goal in the 103rd minute to stand. The goal was not allowed to stand while the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), despite&nbsp;being on&nbsp;offer, was not used.&nbsp;

<h2>Why was VAR not used&nbsp;and&nbsp;what does the rule say?</h2>

With Bayern trailing 1-2 going deep into stoppage time, a long ball from the half line&nbsp;was picked&nbsp;by veteran Thomas Muller&nbsp;which&nbsp;was then passed&nbsp;to Matthijs de Ligt. Without wasting&nbsp;any&nbsp;time, De Ligt fired his effort past the Real goalkeeper Andriy Lunin. However, referee Marciniak blew his whistle for an offside flag&nbsp;which&nbsp;was&nbsp;raised&nbsp;by an assistant&nbsp;making&nbsp;the next phase of play void.&nbsp;

Since the whistle had blown when Muller received the ball, De Ligt’s phase of play&nbsp;which&nbsp;consisted of the&nbsp;goal&nbsp;was ruled out.

According to rule books, VAR can only intervene in case of an offside if the entire phase is allowed to&nbsp;be played&nbsp;and results in a goal. But since the whistle had already gone before&nbsp;the goal had been scored, the VAR&nbsp;was unable to&nbsp;intervene.&nbsp;

<h2>When can VAR come into play?</h2>

Had referee Marciniak not blown his whistle and allowed the play to continue&nbsp;which&nbsp;resulted in the goal, the VAR would have&nbsp;been called in&nbsp;to check whether anyone was offside in the build-up.

Considering&nbsp;the whistle had been blown, Real goalkeeper Lunin hardly made any attempt to save the goal-bound effort of De Ligt.

Marciniak’s decision was more controversial&nbsp;considering&nbsp;the referee’s assistants&nbsp;are asked&nbsp;to hold down their flag in case of offside and allow&nbsp;play to continue&nbsp;which&nbsp;could be further reviewed by the VAR.&nbsp;

However,&nbsp;there was no such protocol&nbsp;followed in Wednesday evening’s match&nbsp;which&nbsp;could have seen Bayern take the&nbsp;match&nbsp;into extra time and a possible penalty shootout.&nbsp;

As things stand, Real will now play in the Champions League&nbsp;final&nbsp;where they will face another German powerhouse&nbsp;Borussia&nbsp;Dortmund&nbsp;in&nbsp;London’s iconic Wembley Stadium on June 1.

An evening highlighted by a stoppage winner from Joselu for Real Madrid could have had more drama, had referee Szymon Marciniak allowed Bayern Munich’s goal in the 103rd minute to stand. The goal was not allowed to stand while the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), despite being on offer, was not used. Why was VAR not used and what does the rule say? With Bayern trailing 1-2 going deep into stoppage time, a long ball from the half line was picked by veteran Thomas Muller which was then passed to Matthijs de Ligt. Without wasting any time, De Ligt fired his effort past the Real goalkeeper Andriy Lunin. However, referee Marciniak blew his whistle for an offside flag which was raised by an assistant making the next phase of play void. Since the whistle had blown when Muller received the ball, De Ligt’s phase of play which consisted of the goal was ruled out. According to rule books, VAR can only intervene in case of an offside if the entire phase is allowed to be played and results in a goal. But since the whistle had already gone before the goal had been scored, the VAR was unable to intervene. ALSO READ | Matthijs de Ligt claims referee apologised to him for 'mistake' that cost Bayern place in UCL final When can VAR come into play? Had referee Marciniak not blown his whistle and allowed the play to continue which resulted in the goal, the VAR would have been called in to check whether anyone was offside in the build-up. Considering the whistle had been blown, Real goalkeeper Lunin hardly made any attempt to save the goal-bound effort of De Ligt. Marciniak’s decision was more controversial considering the referee’s assistants are asked to hold down their flag in case of offside and allow play to continue which could be further reviewed by the VAR. However, there was no such protocol followed in Wednesday evening’s match which could have seen Bayern take the match into extra time and a possible penalty shootout. As things stand, Real will now play in the Champions League final where they will face another German powerhouse Borussia Dortmund in London’s iconic Wembley Stadium on June 1.

Bayern Munich disallowed goal: Were Tuchel and Co stolen of a spot in final? Here is what the VAR rules say

Bayern Munich midfielder Thomas Muller referenced Cristiano Ronaldo after Real Madrid came from behind to clinch a famous victory and dump the Bavarian side out of the Champions League. Muller was speaking about the disallowed Bayern goal that would have taken the match into extra time.

The German giants surrendered a one-goal lead to Madrid in the dying minutes of the game due to individual errors.

However, during the press&nbsp;duties, Muller said the referees favoured the Spanish side, as they did in 2017&nbsp;

"Marciniak? He did not watch the video. He did not give himself the opportunity to look at it," said Muller, talking about the Polish referee.&nbsp;

"It's really strange, in such a situation, to whistle so fast. This often happens here in Madrid. "I experienced this a few years ago, with two goals from Cristiano Ronaldo. But it was before the VAR," he added.&nbsp;

The incident Muller referred to occurred in the second leg of the UCL quarter-final tie in 2016-17 which saw Real Madrid beat Bayern 4-2 after extra-time to secure a 6-3 aggregate win.

Ronaldo scored twice in the added time, helping Madrid reach the next round. However, replays showed that both goals should have been chalked off due to offside.&nbsp;VAR had not been introduced in European competition at the time, so the on-field decisions were final.

<h2>Linesman apologises&nbsp;</h2>

Bayern defender Matthijs de Ligt scored the contentious goal in the stoppage time but it was ruled out as the linesman had raised the offside flag. After the match, De Ligt claimed that the linesman apologised to him for disallowing the goal.&nbsp;

“The rule says that if it’s not clear offside...you have to keep playing.” De Ligt said. “And if you go in the last minute and you whistle like this, I think this is a big mistake. If it’s offside or not, I don’t know, VAR can check it, but if you don’t check it, how can you see it? This is a shame.”

The offside on the De Ligt goal looked close to the naked eye but since the whistle was blown, VAR could not involve itself in the recheck process.&nbsp;

The Madrid win means the record UCL holders will have a shot at a 15th title when they square up against underdogs, Borussia Dortmund at Wembley Stadium on June 1.&nbsp;

Bayern Munich defender Matthijs de Ligt has claimed that the linesman apologised to him for disallowing the goal that could have levelled the Champions League semifinal tie against Real Madrid on Wednesday (May 9).

Bayern Munich defender Matthijs de Ligt has claimed that the linesman apologised to him for disallowing the goal that could have levelled the Champions League semifinal tie against Real Madrid on Wednesday (May 9). De Ligt scored the contentious goal in the stoppage time but it was ruled out as the linesman had raised the offside flag. Speaking after the match, the Dutchman rued that the lapse of judgement from the referee had cost his team a place in the UCL final. “The linesman said to me, ‘I’m sorry, I made a mistake,’” De Ligt said “The rule says that if it’s not clear offside...you have to keep playing. And if you go in the last minute and you whistle like this, I think this is a big mistake. If it’s offside or not, I don’t know, VAR can check it, but if you don’t check it, how can you see it? Tuchel slams referees De Ligt's sentiments were echoed by manager Thomas Tuchel who said it was a 'disaster' that the referee chalked off the goal. "I think it's pretty clear and there is no doubt that is against the rules of modern football. A disaster. An absolute disaster," said Tuchel. "Very difficult. Of course, as sportspeople we accept it. But it is a semi-final, it's not for two such violations of the rule. Everyone has to be at their limit. The referees have to be there as well. That is what we expect. So the apology does not really help." They complain about this and we complain about the goal by Nacho that was disallowed. Kimmich threw himself to the ground.” Also read | Real Madrid stun Bayern Munich with late fightback to enter UEFA Champions League final The Madrid win means the record UCL holders will have a shot at a 15th title when they square up against underdogs, Borussia Dortmund at Wembley Stadium on June 1. Matthijs de Ligt claims referee apologised to him for 'mistake' that cost Bayern place in UCL final

Thomas Tuchel was left fuming, claiming it "felt like a betrayal" after Bayern Munich were denied a stoppage-time equaliser against Real Madrid in the second leg of the Champions League semifinal on Wednesday (May 8).&nbsp;

Having blown away a one-goal lead against Madrid, Bayern levelled proceedings in the dying seconds of the game, courtesy of a tidy finish from Matthijs de Ligt. However, the linesman had raised the offside flag much before the shot went in, prompting the referee to blow the whistle, signalling a stop in play.&nbsp;

"I think it's pretty clear and there is no doubt that is against the rules of modern football. A disaster. An absolute disaster," Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel said.&nbsp;

"With Real's second goal, they let the play continue. The clear rule is that the scene must continue. The first mistake was made by the linesman, the second by the referee," he said.

<h2>Madrid steal the lead</h2>

Despite dominating the match in front of a boisterous Bernabeu crowd, it was the visitors who took the lead in the 68th minute against Madrid.&nbsp;

Alphonso Davies, who was substituted in the first half in place of an injured Serge Gnabry, made a darting run across the field as Madrid were caught on a counterattack. Harry Kane held up the ball beautifully in the centre before pinging it straight to Davies.&nbsp;

The Canadian tool the ball in control, chopped onto his weaker, right foot and curled one past a diving Lunin into the far post.&nbsp;

Having got the advantage, Bayern formed a low block, forcing Carlo Ancelotti to bring Luka Modric, Brahim Diaz and Joselu onto the pitch.

In the 88th minute, Madrid equalised as Manuel Neuer fumbled a regulation take, which was pounced upon by Joselu who scored yet again, two minutes later, to win the tie.

Premier League: Controversial Man Utd attacker Mason Greenwood won't return to club - Getafe chief

The napkin upon which Lionel Messi signed his first-ever unofficial Barcelona contract is up for sale and the bidding has started at a whopping price of $275,000.

The napkin upon which Lionel Messi signed his first-ever unofficial Barcelona contract is up for sale and the bidding has started at a whopping price of $275,000. The world-famous napkin and its lore has been shared numerous times throughout the years but collectors now have the opportunity to get their hands on the extraordinary piece of history. London-based auction house Bonhams has started the bidding which will run until May 17. Experts are of the view that the napkin might fetch anywhere between $375,000 to $625,000. What is the story behind the napkin? Lionel Messi was born in 1987 into a working-class family in Rosario, about 300 kilometres north of Buenos Aires. Barcelona spotted Messi when he was just 13 and recognised that he had the qualities to become an all-timer. However, not everyone in the upper hierarchy of the club was convinced of signing an unknown South American kid. They kept dragging the deal, which made Messi's father impatient. On 14 December 2000, a fateful meeting occurred between Carles Rexach, Barca's sporting director, and agents Josep Minguella and Horacio Gaggioli at the Barcelona tennis club. Also read | Lionel Messi magic hits MLS as Inter Miami crush New York Red Bulls in marathon win Rexach confirmed the club's interest by reaching out for the napkin and writing on it with blue ink, what would become an iconic piece of football memorabilia. "In Barcelona, on December 14, 2000, and in the presence of the gentleman (the agent, Josep Maria) Minguella and Horacio (Gaggioli), Carles Rexach, technical secretary of FCB, commits under his responsibility, despite the opinion of others who are against signing Lionel Messi, as long as the agreed fees are maintained." Gaggioli held on the piece for almost 25 years until deciding to sell it. Messi's formal contract was drawn up later, but this napkin was the springboard to greatness for FC Barcelona. The signing of the contract changed not only the fortunes of Barcelona Football Club but also the footballing landscape as Messi would go on to sweep as many as eight Ballon d'Or's and win one of most memorable World Cups in recent memory. Argentina won 2021 Copa America by beating Brazil at the Maracana, which would propel Messi to do the unthinkable on the world stage, two years later in Qatar. (With inputs from agencies)

Outgoing Bayern Munich boss Thomas Tuchel has hinted at a return to the Premier League as he enters the final chapter of his stint with the German giants. Here is why Real Madrid won’t lift La Liga trophy after Granada match on weekend

Borussia Dortmund showed great composure to reach their third Champions League final after Mats Hummels' second-half goal earned the visitors a 1-0 victory against misfiring Paris St Germain for a deserved 2-0 aggregate win on Tuesday.

Hummels headed home from a corner five minutes into the second half to send the Germans, who won the title in 1997, into their first final in Europe's top club competition since 2013. They will meet either 14-times champions Real Madrid or Bayern Munich, who clash at the Bernabeu on Wednesday after a 2-2 draw in the first leg, in the June 1 showdown at Wembley.

Luis Enrique's PSG hit the woodwork four times but failed to find the net as Kylian Mbappe, widely expected to leave at the end of the season, was a shadow of his usual brilliant self.

"We lacked efficiency," PSG captain Marquinhos said. "There are still positives to take from this competition. At the beginning nobody thought we would go that far. We're out in the semi-finals but with a new coach and a new project."

Dortmund coach Edin Terzic said his team deserved their place in the final. "I am very proud, very happy. We beat PSG and we kept a clean sheet. We had a bit of luck but we deserve to go to the final," he said.

AGGRESSIVE START

PSG, who entered the tie as favourites to reach their second final after finishing runners-up in 2020, made an aggressive start and Mbappe had their first chance in the seventh minute with a half-volley as the hosts piled on the pressure.

With Mbappe on the left flank and Goncalo Ramos as a lone striker, the France forward had some space out wide and the possibility to cut in and threaten the Dortmund goal. The visitors, however, were composed and held firm. Their confidence grew and they had their first opportunity through Julian Ryerson, whose shot hit the side netting.

Dortmund had a better chance in the 35th when, after a sharp counter attack following a woeful Mbappe miss, Gianluigi Donnarumma pulled off a brilliant save to deny Karim Adeyemi.

PSG were lucky the score on the night was level at halftime. Luis Enrique's side stepped up a gear after the break with Warren Zaire Emery's shot hitting the outside of the post after Mbappe's attempt was deflected into his path by Ramos.

But Dortmund were more clinical as Hummels headed home from Julian Brandt's corner five minutes after the interval to double the German side's advantage over the two legs.

Ramos's shot on the turn then went just over and Nuno Mendes's 25-metre missile hit the post as PSG reacted swiftly.

Another Mbappe attempt was deflected onto the bar before Vitinha's powerful shot also hit the woodwork.

PSG's Ousmane Dembele was a constant threat after the hour mark but, just like the rest of the team, the France forward came more into the game far too late against a side who never lost their composure and fully deserve their place in the final.

UCL: Mats Hummels on target as composed Borussia Dortmund knock PSG out to reach final

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta could miss the all-important final Premier League match of the season against Everton later this month. With a title on the line, Arteta is walking a tightrope and any disciplinary action against him could lead to a touchline ban, which may have a negative effect on the team's morale.&nbsp;

Heading into the penultimate match against Manchester United, Arteta has received five yellow cards - the most a manager has accumulated this season. Another yellow card against the Red Devils on the Old Trafford turf would mean a one-game suspension for the Spanish manager.&nbsp;

With the tempers expected to flare, as they usually do in fixtures of such magnitude, it would augur best for Arteta and Arsenal that he keeps a calm demeanour. A suspension would result in Arteta's team playing in front of relegation battlers, Everton, without his guidance.&nbsp;

<h2>Everton halt title challengers&nbsp;</h2>

The Toffees, under manager Sean Dyche, have already shown that they are capable of halting title charges. Cross-city rivals Liverpool found it the hard way last month when the title challengers succumbed to a 0-2 defeat and fell behind in the race against Arsenal and Manchester City. &nbsp;

The Arsenal gaffer has already faced suspension once thus season after receiving three yellow cards following a booking against Luton Town. He was forced to miss the Gunners' trip to Aston Villa in December and his side were beaten 1-0, showing the significant impact his absence had on the team. December was the month where Arsenal lost steam in the title race before roaring back to form.&nbsp;

Arsenal are currently leading the Premier League points table, having collected 83 points in 36 matches played. Manchester City are on second spot with 82 points but have a game in hand and could potentially leapfrog Arsenal after the match against Fulham on Saturday (May 11).&nbsp;

The calculation is simple for Arsenal to win its first Premier League title in nearly two decades. The London-based team needs to win all its matches and hope that City drop a point or lose one of their matches. As for Liverpool, a lot hinges on both Arsenal and City imploding at the final hurdle which looks highly unlikely at this stage.&nbsp;

Could Mikel Arteta miss Arsenal’s potential title-decider against Everton? Here's how

Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel has revealed the secret of Harry Kane's phenomenal&nbsp;inaugural season with the Bavarian side where the England captain has smashed goals for fun.

Speaking on the eve of the big-ticket second-leg of the Champions League semifinal match against Real Madrid, Tuchel said Kane's addiction to cappuccino was perhaps fuelling his goal-scoring spree.

"How many cappuccinos he drinks a day. Every time I go into the kitchen, he is there. It must be so good, I have started doing it. He looks healthy and in good shape," said Tuchel who looked relaxed and in high-spirits, ahead of the match.&nbsp;

Bayern go into Santiago Bernabeu as the underdogs but a victory, especially after the hard-fought 2-2 draw at the Allianz Arena last week, would provide the perfect sendoff for Tuchel who will be stepping away at the end of the season.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The German manager said he was looking at Kane to come good once again and utilise his experience to guide the Bayern side home.&nbsp;

"We got a big personality in our dressing-room on top of a goalscorer and someone with the ability to handle pressure. But we knew that. He is the captain of England. He has brought everything to the team that we could possibly have hoped for. [Against Real] he needs to prove the point and deliver.”

<h2>Kane to stay in Germany</h2>

Despite the season not going the record Bundesliga champions way, Bayern would be hoping to finish the season on a strong note with the UCL trophy. If Bayern cross the Madrid hurdle, it will be a repeat of the 2012 UCL final where Borussia Dortmund await them at the Wembley.&nbsp;

Kane has scored 42 goals in 42 games this season and insisted that he will be staying in Germany, despite the hardships this season.&nbsp;

"Of course, it's not the season I wanted with the way the league has gone and the way we got knocked out of the cup. Not winning the Bundesliga is a tough pill to swallow and it makes this competition even more important but we know there's still a long way to go," said Kane.&nbsp;

"Hopefully, I will be able to make something special happen this season. If not, I'll be ready to go again in the summer and turn things around."

Champions League: Helpless Kylian Mbappe opens up on PSG exit, says 'I tried to help my team'

English commentator and former player Jamie Carragher lashed out at the Manchester United star players for talking on the pitch following their heavy drubbing at the hands of Crystal Palace in their Premier League encounter on Monday (May 6). In their away encounter, United were left shellshocked as they lost 4-0 to Palace as the ongoing PL season continues to be a sorry affair for them.

Post the match, United star players -- namely&nbsp;Mason Mount, Andre Onana and Antony -- were seen talking and whispering on the pitch which wasn't well received by former Liverpool player-turned-commentator Carragher. The veteran schooled the United players for their 'embarrassing' act.&nbsp;

Talking on Sky Sports, Carragher said, "Just get off the pitch! Talking, whispering behind your hand - you've been absolutely awful. You're probably talking about one of the players or somebody else or the setup or the manager. Just get off the pitch, shut up and get in. You've been beaten 4-0... whispering, talking about other players. Honestly, embarrassing."

<h2>'No United team should be getting beat 4-0 by Palace'</h2>

Carragher further opined, "Your performance level will drop when you lose your best players. Ten Hag needs performances. He needs belief. You've got to make us believe there's something here. I struggled to see how United would win tonight. No United team should be getting beat 4-0 by Palace. Man United's U23 team, I'd still expect them not to lose 4-0."

He added, "I've never been a coach or a manager, but I've been a player and some of the things I see are just wrong."
