The majority of the 20 Premier League clubs are in favour of keeping Video Assistant Referees (VAR), a day after Wolverhampton Wanderers brought the official resolution to vote on whether the technology should be scrapped or not.&nbsp;

The clubs, though not entirely happy with the product, want VAR to&nbsp;continue as scrapping it would be "counterproductive" and might "damage the standing of the Premier League", according to a report in Sky Sports.

The clubs want significant improvements in the technology, which includes better training for the humans operating it as their interpretation of rules has often let down the system.&nbsp;

On Wednesday (May 15), Wolves surprised many by stating they&nbsp;had&nbsp;brought the resolution "after careful consideration and with the utmost respect for the Premier League, PGMOL and our fellow competitors". The proposal had&nbsp;triggered a vote which will take place when the clubs gather in Harrogate on June 6 for the annual general meeting.&nbsp;

"There is no blame to be placed. We are all just looking for the best possible outcome for football — and all stakeholders have been working hard to try and make the introduction of additional technology a success," Wolves said in a statement.&nbsp;

“Our position is that the price we are paying for a small increase in accuracy is at odds with the spirit of our game, and as a result, we should remove it from the 2024/25 season onwards," it added.&nbsp;

VAR was introduced in the top tier of English football five seasons ago in 2019/20 after its successful implementation in the Russia World Cup. However, since then, the technology has been under constant controversy with clubs often ruing that VAR was not doing what it had set out to correct.&nbsp;

While small errors have been part of VAR since its inception, the officials using the VAR system made a massive howler in September last year when&nbsp;Liverpool's Luiz Diaz scored a clear onside goal against Tottenham Hotspur but it was chalked off due to a communication breakdown.&nbsp;

A few matches later, Arsenal manager Mikel&nbsp;Arteta labelled the defeat against Newcastle United a 'disgrace' after Anthony Gordon's tap-in goal stood despite the VAR checking the goal for three possible fouls.&nbsp;

“Embarrassing, it’s an absolute disgrace, that’s what it is: a disgrace. There’s so much at stake, we’ve put in so many hours to compete at the highest level and you cannot imagine the amount of messages we’ve had saying this cannot continue. It’s embarrassing," said Arteta at the time.&nbsp;

More recently, Nottingham Forest wrote letters of complaint to PGMOL and threatened to sue the referee's body. The club also questioned the appointment of VAR Stuart Attwell following April's defeat at Everton.&nbsp;

'Might damage Premier League's standing': Clubs on scrapping VAR after Wolves proposal

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag was seemingly booed by a section of fans at Old Trafford as he addressed the crowd, following the culmination of the Premier League match against Newcastle United.

It was the final home match of the season for United and Ten Hag took the microphone to rouse the fans, before the FA Cup final, later this month.&nbsp;

While the Dutchman's speech earned cheers and applause, it was also greeted with boos as the fans made it clear they were not impressed with the season United had endured.&nbsp;&nbsp;

"On behalf of players staff, I would like to thank you all for your brilliant support this season. As you know it wasn't an easy season but one thing remained constant and that was the backing of you for the team," said Ten Hag.&nbsp;

"But this season is not over yet, we go to Brighton and then we go to Wembley and I promise you those players will give everything to win that cup and bring it to Old Trafford and we are sure you will be there supporting us," he added.&nbsp;

Although it remains unclear if the booing came from the home fans or away fans who had stayed back, much later after the match.&nbsp;

<h2>United's struggles</h2>

United returned to winning ways on Wednesday (May 15) as goals from Kobbie Mainoo, Amad Diallo and Rasmus Hojlund were enough to secure three points against the Geordies, who threatened of a late comeback, courtesy of a stoppage-time second goal from Lewis Hall.&nbsp;

The win keeps pressures off of Ten Hab, albeit briefly. Speculations have been rife that the upcoming Brighton match and the Manchester City FA Cup game could be Ten Hag's last assignment as the United boss.&nbsp;

Jim Ratcliffe's INEOS Group that recently acquired a 25 per cent stake in United will be looking to assert its authority over the club and getting rid of an under-performing manager appears to be the best bet.&nbsp;

Notably, after Ten Hag's speech, United's talisman&nbsp;Bruno Fernades hinted that not all was well behind the scenes as he gave a vague answer on his future at the club. Fernandes said he would only stay at the club if the upper hierarchy wanted him. &nbsp;

Chhetri said in the video, "The feel that I recollect in the last 19 years is a very nice combination of duty, pressure and immense joy. I never thought individually these are the games I've played for the country, this is what I've done good, I've done bad. But, now I did it, this last one-and-a-half two months. It felt very strange. Manchester City took pole position in the Premier League title&nbsp;race after their Tuesday (May 14) evening win over Tottenham Hotspur. The 2-0 victory which&nbsp;now sees Manchester City take the top spot ahead of Sunday’s final league&nbsp;game&nbsp;had their second-choice goalkeeper to thank for some superb saves. The defeat for Spurs, on&nbsp;the other&nbsp;hand, has seen them end their Champions League qualification pursuit as Aston Villa will return to the European Cup after the 1982-83 season.&nbsp;

<h2>Stefan Ortega comes good for Man&nbsp;City</h2>

After a horrible collision with Christian Romero at the 60th minute, Man City’s first-choice goalkeeper Ederson&nbsp;was taken off&nbsp;due to concussion. With City leading 1-0 at the points after Erling Haaland had scored the opening goal in the 50th minute, Pep Guardiola had to gamble on Stefan Ortega. Knowing a draw would have seen Arsenal in pole position in the title race, Spurs almost scored an equaliser when Son Hueng Min was one-on-one with Ortega in the 86th minute.&nbsp;

However, Ortega made a title-winning save as he denied Son a potential equaliser, keeping&nbsp;City ahead in the match. The save later proved&nbsp;to be&nbsp;crucial as Erling Haaland converted a penalty four minutes later to seal a famous 2-0 win. The win was their first in the new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the Premier League, which&nbsp;also denied Spurs from scoring at home for the first time this season.&nbsp;

All 20 Premier League clubs will be voting on whether to scrap Video Assistant Referees (VAR) from next season at their annual general&nbsp;meeting next month. The contentious&nbsp; technology has been in controversy the entire season with numerous calls given by it deemed wrong by clubs and fans alike.&nbsp;

Wolverhampton Wanderers&nbsp;brought the official proposal forward on Wednesday (May 15) which will trigger a vote when the clubs gather in Harrogate on June 6.&nbsp;

Wolves said they brought the resolution "after careful consideration and with the utmost respect for the Premier League, PGMOL and our fellow competitors".&nbsp;

"There is no blame to be placed. We are all just looking for the best possible outcome for football — and all stakeholders have been working hard to try and make the introduction of additional technology a success," it added.&nbsp;

VAR was introduced in the top tier of English football five seasons ago in 2019/20 after its successful implementation in the Russia World Cup. However, since then, the technology has been under constant controversy with clubs often ruing that VAR was not doing what it had set out to correct.&nbsp;

“Our position is that the price we are paying for a small increase in accuracy is at odds with the spirit of our game, and as a result we should remove it from the 2024/25 season onwards.”

While small errors have been part of VAR since its inception, the officials using the VAR system made a massive howler in September last year when&nbsp;Liverpool's Luiz Diaz scored a clear onside goal against Tottenham Hotspur but it was chalked off due to a communication breakdown.&nbsp;

A few matches later, Arsenal manager Mikel&nbsp;Arteta labelled the defeat against Newcastle United a 'disgrace' after Anthony Gordon's tap-in goal stood despite the VAR checking the goal for three possible fouls.&nbsp;

More recently, Nottingham Forest wrote letters of complaint to PGMOL and threatened to sue the referee's body. The club also questioned the appointment of VAR Stuart Attwell following April's defeat at Everton.&nbsp;

Departing Liverpool assistant coach Pep Lijnders has been appointed Austrian club, Red Bull Salzburg's new manager, the club announced on Wednesday (May 15). Lijnders, who initially worked under Brendan Rodgers at Liverpool, went on to become Klopp's right-hand man as the duo brought great success to one of the biggest clubs in world football. Vitor Matis will join Lijnders as the assistant at Salzburg, having spent four-and-a-half years as Liverpool's elite development coach. “I am very proud to become the new head coach of FC Red Bull Salzburg," said Lijnders. “This is a real privilege for me. After PSV Eindhoven, Porto and Liverpool, I am now moving to another exceptional club with a really good structure and a particular focus on youth development," he added. Having joined the Merseyside club in 2014, Lijnders was one of the pivotal figures in helping the club win its sixth Champions League title in 2019 and the Premier League trophy in the subsequent year. “I want to develop a mentality with the team that places a lot of emphasis on attacking style of play and where passion and hunger for success are the basis of everything," said Lijnders. The Dutch manager made it clear that he would be taking a managerial job after the Liverpool assignment. "Nah. I was really clear to be honest. When we had the talk a long time ago, for me it was clear. It made it easier for me when he [Klopp] said 'this will be it'. We knew in the summer already 'OK, we are going towards the end of this project'" "I have given already answers in interviews. So we spoke, I got the last year offers and my heart says yes, but my loyalty, respect and friendship to Mike [Gordon] and Jurgen said 'no'. So on the moment we spoke we agreed to finish this project together, then I will go and manage," Lijnders added. Erling Haaland scored twice to settle Manchester City's nerves as the Premier League champions beat Tottenham 2-0 to take a giant step towards a historic fourth straight English title on Tuesday.

The Norwegian forward tapped home a pinpoint Kevin De Bruyne cross early in the second half to score City's first-ever league goal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

And he netted a late penalty to seal the three points for the visitors, minutes after substitute goalkeeper Stefan Ortega saved brilliantly from Son Heung-min.

The win takes Pep Guardiola's team two points clear of Arsenal at the top of the table after 37 games.

Victory at the Etihad against West Ham on Sunday will make them champions for a fourth consecutive season, regardless of the Gunners' result against Everton.

No team in English top-flight history has ever won four titles in a row.

Defeat for Spurs also guarantees that Aston Villa will finish in the fourth Champions League spot, joining City, Arsenal and Liverpool in Europe's top-tier competition next season.&nbsp;

"We gave the chance in our hands for the last game," Guardiola told the BBC. "The tennis players say 'The serve to win Wimbledon, the last game, is the most difficult one'.

"It happened in our period against Aston Villa (in 2022). And many, many years ago it happened with Sergio Aguero (scoring) in 93 minutes 20 seconds against QPR. So there will be the typical game."

Guardiola called for help from City's fans to get them over the line.

"We know what we're playing for," he said. "The tension is there, the rival is so good. It's why it is difficult, we know that.

"Everyone come to the stadium and make noise. These games are more difficult but you have to do it. We'll have one day off, two days to prepare, and then we will do our best."

<h2>Stand up if you hate Arsenal</h2>

The build-up to the game in north London was dominated by a fierce debate over whether home fans wanted their own team to lose in order to leave City in the driving seat, with Arsenal their nearest challengers.

The Spurs supporters made their feelings towards their bitter local rivals clear in the opening minutes, with chants of "Stand up if you hate Arsenal" ringing around the stadium.

Tottenham had the first sight of goal, with City's Ederson tipping over a fierce Rodrigo Bentancur effort before Spurs goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario kept out Phil Foden's close-range shot.

City, who came into the match unbeaten in 21 league matches, were short of their fluent best while Spurs struggled to put the finishing touches to their attacking moves.

Moments after the re-start Vicario dived full length to keep out a stinging De Bruyne effort.

But the visitors broke the deadlock in the 51st minute when Bernardo Silva found De Bruyne in the box and the Belgian crossed for Haaland to slot home from point-blank range.

Thousands of Spurs fans chanted "Are you watching Arsenal" as the City faithful celebrated in their corner.

The game then became disjointed as De Bruyne was raked down the Achilles by Pape Sarr before Ederson took a blow to the head in denying Cristian Romero and was replaced shortly afterwards by Ortega.

The German was called into action immediately, denying substitute Dejan Kulusevski from close range.

Time stood still when Son burst through with five minutes of normal time remaining but Ortega saved with his legs when the South Korean seemed certain to score.

Guardiola fell to the ground, clutching his head in disbelief.

Instead City were awarded a penalty when Pedro Porro brought down substitute Jeremy Doku and Haaland smashed home in the 91st minute to spark wild celebrations from the players in front of the City faithful, taking his league tally to 27 goals for the season.

After the match, Manchester City boss Pep&nbsp;Guardiola revealed that Ederson was unable to see properly and that his team took the call, keeping in mind the final league match against West Ham United, over the weekend.&nbsp;

If the goal had got in, the match may have ended in a 1-1 draw, allowing Arsenal to walk into the final match week at the top of the points table.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

He's an exceptional, exceptional keeper," said Guardiola. "Ederson had a kick in the eye and it is swollen. He can't see properly. The doctor told me he needed to be replaced. I didn't have an alternative." Ortega proved to be more than an adequate backup for Ederson as he saved a potential equaliser from Heung-min Son in the dying seconds of the match. If the goal had got in, the match may have ended in a 1-1 draw, allowing Arsenal to walk into the final match week at the top of the points table. (With inputs from agencies)

Erik ten Hag has hit back at Wayne Rooney's comments that some of Manchester United players who were seemingly injured were actually fit enough to play but refused to do so to avoid the heat.

Erik ten Hag has hit back at Wayne Rooney's comments that some of Manchester United players who were seemingly injured were actually fit enough to play but refused to do so to avoid the heat. The United manager retaliated saying all of his injured players were "desperate" to be involved. The Dutch manager has been without his top players throughout the season, with the likes of Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rasford and Harry Maguire facing a race against time in order to be fit for the Wembley FA Cup final against Manchester City. “No. You have to see here in Carrington [at the training centre] the players are desperate to play. I see Licha [Lisandro] Martínez, I see Bruno [Fernandes] – he did a fitness test on Sunday to play. [Marcus] Rashford did everything he could do. He trained and tried to train last week but he didn’t make it," Ten Hag said. "Players are desperate to play, they want to be in the right shape. You see also Victor Lindelöf and Raphaël Varane, they are training to make themselves available for the [FA Cup] final. They do what they can do.” What did Rooney say? Notably, after the match against Arsenal where United suffered a 0-1 loss, following a first-half goal from Leandro Trossard, Rooney made the sensational claim. The former United captain said: "As we look at the injuries they've picked up, some of those players can play, 100 per cent." "When you have the European Championship coming up and an FA Cup final, it's easy for players to stay out of it a little bit, get back for the final and make sure they're ready for the European Championship. I've seen it myself over the years," added Rooney. Rooney, who was recently fired as Birmingham City manager, said the brunt of players pulling out of the matches will be then faced by Ten Hag who has to square up against the media. "The players who are injured are not filling themselves in any credit at the minute. The manager is going to take all the stick for that." 'The foundations are fairly fragile': Ange Postecoglou slams Tottenham fans after Man City pick decisive win

Pep Guardiola said "history is in front of us" as he prepares his Manchester City team for a potentially tricky match at Tottenham on Tuesday that could ultimately decide the destination of the Premier League title.

City, chasing an unprecedented fourth straight top-flight English league crown, are one point behind leaders Arsenal but crucially have a game in hand.

If City beat Spurs they will be able to seal the championship with a win at home to West Ham on the final day of the season on Sunday, when Arsenal host Everton.

Guardiola's men are charging towards the finishing line, hitting 28 goals in their past seven Premier League matches and conceding just five times.

But the City boss, who said he was relishing the high-pressure title run-in, denied that the race was already effectively over.

"Fifteen goals (in four matches) is fine, it gave us the points to be here but it doesn't give you an extra thing for tomorrow when you start the game," Guardiola told Monday's pre-match press conference.

"The mindset is easy, in terms of if we don't win we are not going to win the Premier League and this is what we have to do."

City have never won a league match at Tottenham's new stadium, which opened in 2019, and have not even scored a goal, though they won there in the FA Cup in January.

Guardiola said despite his team's poor record at the ground, they had played well there "many times".

"But to do something in this country that has never been done before you have to do something special, exceptional I would say," he said.

"It's not ever happened in the Premier League. We have to do it this time. History is in front of us and we have to accept we have not done it. It's the time to do it, otherwise Arsenal will be champions."

Guardiola said he had "huge respect" for Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou, whose team still have an outside chance of securing a Champions League place for next season, though a win for Aston Villa against Liverpool later on Monday would end those hopes.

"The difficulties are there but at the same time we know what we are playing for -- to give us the chance for the last game at home depending on us," he said.

<h2>Martinez scripts unwanted&nbsp;history</h2>

In the opening two minutes of the match on Monday, Harvey Elliot’s deflected shot came in his way, but he&nbsp;was unable to&nbsp;hold on to the ball. Despite the best efforts to save the goal, he&nbsp;was unable to&nbsp;avoid the embarrassment and parried the ball over the goalline for Liverpool’s opener. The embarrassing moment saw him register his third own goal in his Premier League career, becoming the highest-scoring person between the sticks.&nbsp;

Outgoing Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) star Kylian Mbappe is excited for his future but not sure where. The footballer, after playing his last home game for PSG, was named Ligue 1 Player of the Year on Monday (May 13) for the fifth time in a row. Mbappe spent seven seasons with PSG and around 10 years in total at the French football league.

"It's a chapter of my life that is ending. Ligue 1 has been a major part of my career," Mbappé told the audience at the award ceremony.

"Now I'm turning a new page in my life. What comes next is very exciting, but that's another matter...I want to thank my family, who've always supported me in the good and bad times. I know it was very important for my father that I made history in Ligue 1 before leaving, and I think, with humility, that I've done that," he added.

The French national team captain is widely speculated to join LaLiga giants Real Madrid after his contract expires. Mbappe, however, declined to comment on the same on Monday.

"I think that in life you have to choose the right moment for everything," Mbappé said. "The only thing I know is that I'm leaving PSG. As for the rest, it isn't the right moment to know that," he added.

LaLiga president Javier Tebas, however, claimed that the French footballer would be joining Real Madrid on a five-year contract.

"He'll be at Madrid next season," Tebas told the Argentinian newspaper Ole. "He's one of the best players in the world. But they also have Vinícius [Júnior] and [Jude] Bellingham. Madrid are going to have a great squad, although of course, that doesn't guarantee winning championships."

Real Madrid, the winner of five Champions League titles since 2014, will be looking to add more silverware when they take on Borussia Dortmund on June 1 in the final.

Raphael Varane announced on Tuesday (May 14) he will leave Manchester United at the end of the season when his contract expires following a three-year spell at Old Trafford.

Raphael Varane announced on Tuesday (May 14) he will leave Manchester United at the end of the season when his contract expires following a three-year spell at Old Trafford. The former France defender, 31, arrived at the club from Real Madrid in 2021 for an initial fee of about £34 million ($43 million) and has made 93 appearances, scoring twice. He was part of the team that won the club's first trophy in six years, the 2023 Carabao Cup. But United have endured a nightmare season, languishing in eighth place in the Premier League with 14 defeats and unlikely to qualify for Europe. Varane, whose United career has been disrupted by injuries, has not played since a 4-3 defeat to Chelsea on April 4 but hopes to be available again before the end of the campaign. "To you guys, supporters of Manchester United it's been an amazing few years to play for this special club and wear that shirt," Varane said on social media. "The first time I went to Old Trafford as a Man United player was insane, the atmosphere was amazing." "I fell in love with the club, with the fans. You have to play for Man United to understand what that represents." The 2018 World Cup winner added: "Despite the fact we had a difficult season, I'm very positive for the future. The new owners (United co-owner Jim Ratcliffe) are coming with a clear plan and a great strategy." United manager Erik ten Hag is hopeful Varane can go out by playing a part in winning another trophy in the FA Cup final later this month. Also read | England manager Gareth Southgate provides update on replacing Erik ten Hag at Manchester United 'We plan for him' Newcastle visit Old Trafford on Wednesday before United travel to Brighton on the final day of the Premier League season on Sunday. "We plan [for] him," said Ten Hag on Tuesday. "Definitely for the last games. Not tomorrow but we hope for Sunday and then, of course, for the last game (the FA Cup final)." United issued a statement saying Varane had confirmed his exit, saying he had brought a "great deal of class and experience to the team". "It is unflappable work at the heart of the defence that Rapha is most recognised for, as he has shown his undoubted quality since joining the club," the club added. Varane is one of the most decorated defenders of his generation, winning four Champions Leagues and three La Liga titles during a 10-year spell at Madrid. He was also central to France's 2018 World Cup win and a run to the 2022 World Cup final. However, he retired from international football at just 29, citing the extreme physical and mental pressures put upon top players. "The very highest level is like a washing machine, you play all the time and you never stop," he told French TV station Canal+. "We have overloaded schedules and play non-stop. Right now, I feel like I'm suffocating and that the player is gobbling up the man." Varane has also spoken out about concerns regarding the impact concussions suffered by players could have in later life.

Captains will be the only ones allowed to speak to the referee and discuss a decision during matches at the upcoming European Championship in a bid to facilitate clearer communication, UEFA's managing director of refereeing Roberto Rosetti said.

If any other player is found to approach the referee showing any sign of disrespect or dissent they will be shown a yellow card, Rosetti said. "Being a referee in the modern game is very difficult," Rosetti said in an open letter on Tuesday.

"The official in the middle takes between 200 to 250 decisions per match - that is one every 22 seconds - in difficult and sometimes controversial situations, under huge pressure, with each of them scrutinised and re-watched from multiple different angles by fans and pundits alike."

"They (referees) receive a lot of information from the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), and we are ready to speak and share more details with the players and coaches to help them understand how a decision was taken."

Rosetti said coaches and players have welcomed the new approach. "Explaining a decision with up to 22 players mobbing you is impossible for a referee. It can lead to a breakdown in communication, with the beautiful game turning very ugly very quickly," he added.

Liverpool legend Steve Nicol slammed Mohamed Salah after his underwhelming display in Liverpool's 3-3 stalemate versus Aston Villa in their away game in the Premier League on Monday (May 13). Nicol opined that Salah was 'invisible' for majority part of the game as he remained ineffective. However, he was quick to point out to the fans how good he has been over the years for the Merseyside club.&nbsp;

Talking about the clash, Liverpool took a 1-0 lead soon courtesy of an own-goal from Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez in the second minute. While the home side levelled scores soon, Liverpool went 3-1 ahead in 48 minutes with one goal apiece from Cody Gakpo and Jarell Quansah. Nonetheless, the Jurgen Klopp's side failed to win with two late strikes from Villa substitute Jhon Duran.&nbsp;

Liverpool legend Steve Nicol slammed Mohamed Salah after his underwhelming display in Liverpool's 3-3 stalemate versus Aston Villa in their away game in the Premier League on Monday (May 13). Nicol opined that Salah was 'invisible' for majority part of the game as he remained ineffective. However, he was quick to point out to the fans how good he has been over the years for the Merseyside club. Talking about the clash, Liverpool took a 1-0 lead soon courtesy of an own-goal from Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez in the second minute. While the home side levelled scores soon, Liverpool went 3-1 ahead in 48 minutes with one goal apiece from Cody Gakpo and Jarell Quansah. Nonetheless, the Jurgen Klopp's side failed to win with two late strikes from Villa substitute Jhon Duran. Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has clapped back at those attempting to undermine his team's success. Guardiola is chasing a historic fourth consecutive Premier League title - a feat that has never been achieved in English football. Speaking ahead of the potential title-decider against Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday (May 14), Guardiola said if success came only from money spent, the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea will be in their position. “Before it was the money. For that reason, Manchester United should have won all the titles, Chelsea - all the titles, Arsenal - all the titles. They spend as much money in the last five years as us. They should be there. They are not there," said Guardiola at the pre-match press conference. “For that reason Girona shouldn’t be in the Champions League [next season] and Leicester should win the Premier League," he added. Also read | ‘Won’t roll out red carpet’: Ange Postecoglou on facing Man City despite Spurs win helping rivals Arsenal Man City's 115 breaches While Guardiola has reached new milestones with the City team, his success has come with a little asterisk next to it. The Manchester-based club is facing 115 charges related to breach of Premier League regulations. The club is accused of providing inaccurate financial information between 2009 to 2018. It also failed to provide accurate details for player and manager payments from 2009 to 2018. Additionally, it failed to comply with UEFA's ruling, including Financial Fair Play (FFP) between 2013-14 and 2017-18. Between 2015 to 2018, the club has been charged with seven breaches of Premier League's Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR). While the likes of Everton and Nottingham Forest have been punished this season for breaching PSR, City are yet to face any action. 'It is hard' While the legal cases remain pending against City, the team sits at the cusp of history. Guardiola admitted that his players knew what they were playing for, having reached so close to the ultimate prize. “In the beginning of the season we didn’t think about it. But then we were in February, March and April, we were still there. After that it ignites something in all our heads," said the Spanish manager. Guardiola cited examples of previous dynasties in the Premier League and Division One that failed to four-peat the title. “No team has done it. That shows how hard it is. Liverpool in the '80s, Sir Alex Ferguson’s United in the '90s. Chelsea with [Roman] Abramovich and Jose [Mourinho], Arsenal with [Arsene] Wenger didn’t do it.” A win against Spurs would propel City to the top of the points table, heading into the final matchday on Sunday (May 19). However, a loss or a draw would hand the advantage to Arsenal who are chasing their first title in nearly two decades. (With inputs from agencies)

Arsenal kept their Premier League title dreams alive by ending an Old Trafford hoodoo to grind out a 1-0 win at Manchester United on Sunday to move back top of the table.

Leandro Trossard scored the only goal in the 20th minute&nbsp;as Arsenal won for just the second time in 17 games away at United to go a point clear at the summit.

Manchester City still have the chance of holding the title in their own hands as the defending champions have two matches left to Arsenal's one.

However, the Gunners kept the pressure on Pep Guardiola's men ahead of their tricky trip to Tottenham on Tuesday.

Defeat further dented United's chances of competing in Europe next season.

Erik ten Hag's men showed more spirit than in a dismal 4-0 defeat to Crystal Palace on Monday (May 6), but have now won just one of their last eight Premier League games.

United remain eighth in the table, three points adrift of both Newcastle, who they face on Wednesday, and Chelsea.

<h2>A scintillating 2024 for Gunners</h2>

Arsenal have been in scintillating form in 2024 to remain in the race for their first league title in 20 years.

Mikel Arteta's men have won 15 and drawn one of their 17 league games since the turn of the year.

But Arsenal were far from their flowing best as the expected onslaught of an injury-ravaged United never materialised under unusually stifling heat in England's north-west.

The manner of defeat at Palace had increased the scrutiny on United boss Ten Hag.

He made three changes to the team swept aside at Selhurst Park as Scott McTominay,&nbsp; Sofyan Amrabat&nbsp;and&nbsp;Amad Diallo came in.

The Dutchman's options were again hamstrung by a lengthy list of absentees with captain Bruno Fernandes among those sidelined and a bench littered with youngsters.

But his decision to retain Casemiro as a makeshift centre-back after his woeful showing against Palace will become another stick to beat the beleaguered coach with.

The Brazil captain was dropped from their squad for the Copa America in midweek due to his terrible form.

The work that lies ahead of Ratcliffe has been laid bare in recent weeks, but the home side did manage to keep the majority of the 74,000 crowd onside by taking the game to Arsenal after the break.

Arsenal, though, were rarely seriously troubled as they held out for a sixth clean sheet in their last seven away league games.

Alejandro Garnacho was United's one live wire but smashed into the side-netting with his best chance to equalise.

Gabriel Martinelli and Declan Rice were denied by brilliant Andre Onana saves to prevent Arsenal the second goal they craved to avoid a tense finale.

The visitors' desperation to see the game out was evident as Martinelli took the ball to the corner with 10 minutes of the 90 still to play.

But Arsenal did just enough to ask the question City, who host West Ham on the final day of the season after their visit to north London in midweek.

Paris Saint-Germain coach Luis Enrique claims not to hear any boos for Kylian Mbappe during the player's last home game before his departure from the club after the end of ongoing season. Many boos and whistles were heard as soon as PSG's lineup was announced at Parcs des Princes on Sunday (May 12).

"I didn't hear any booing," Enrique said. "I heard lots of support. All I heard was applause, chants and joy, which I think it was what Kylian deserved. The fans were superb, as always."

Mbappe, who is PSG's all-time top scorer, has announced that he'll leave the club after spending seven seasons. Amid the boos, he was also shown a banner of support from PSG ultra supporters which read: "Child from the Parisian suburbs, you became a legend of PSG."

Speaking on the banner, Enrique said: &nbsp;"I thought it [the tribute] was fantastic and very heartfelt. It's beautiful to recognise the work of a player of his level. He is without a doubt a legend of the club despite his youth. We still have some game left. I wish him the best of luck in his sporting career."

Enrique, meanwhile, was asked why he didn't substitute Mbappe to which he said: "I didn't think about taking him off because every time I have done so, you [press] have made such a fuss about it. So I thought I would keep him 90 minutes so that no one gets annoyed."

Mbappe played full 90 minutes in 3-1 loss to Toulouse. He scored his side's only goal in the eight minute. This was his 27th goal of the season. The result, however, doesn't matter much as PSG have already won the Ligue 1 title this season.

Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou has insisted that his team will not be "putting down the red carpet" for Manchester City during their midweek Premier League clash.

Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou has insisted that his team will not be "putting down the red carpet" for Manchester City during their midweek Premier League clash. Fierce cross-city rivals, Arsenal are hoping that Spurs do them a favour by nicking something from City to win the title. In the lead-up to the match, there has been significant chatter from Spurs fans who want the team to lose so that Arsenal are unable to win their first league title in almost two decades. However, Postecoglou quashed such sentiments saying the fans will turn up for the win. "You think the majority of our fans are not going to want us to win tomorrow night? I don't see it that way. I think the majority of our fans will create the atmosphere they always create at our games," said Postecoglou in the pre-match press conference. 'I'm not going to do that' Quizzed that a proportion of Tottenham fans wanted to lose to stop Arsenal from winning the league, Postecoglou fired a rhetorical question. "A proportion of our fans? What does that mean? What proportion? 50 per cent? 20 per cent? One per cent? That's fine, people are allowed to feel the way they do," he added. As for Manchester City's dominance in the league who will be eyeing a fourth consecutive title, the Australian manager said: "They haven't done it yet. That's an important point. But if you think they have then it does become an issue because all of us are just putting down the red carpet for them." "I'm not going to do that - and I don't think any managers will. It's in the hand of each individual club to try and break that dominance and create teams that will challenge." Also read | Premier League: Not a fan of VAR as system complicates matters, says Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou While Postecoglou wants his team to challenge City, he will be without the services of Richarlison and Yves Bissouma. Both players will be out for the remaining two games of the season. Arsenal have a one-point lead over City at the moment, having played a game extra. If City get all three points against Tottenham, they will leapfrog to the front, setting up an exciting final day of the league where only City dropping points will allow Arsenal to win the title. City have already won the league twice under Pep with a one-point margin. On both occasions, it was Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool that fell short in the most agonising manner. (With inputs from agencies)

Waterfall at Old Trafford from leaking roof after incessant rain summarises Manchester United season | VIDEO

England boss Gareth Southgate has rebuffed the talks linking him to a potential move to Manchester United to replace under-fire Erik ten Hag at the end of the season. Southgate said his attention was firmly on the upcoming Euros and that he intended to see out his contract with the Three Lions.&nbsp;

Ten Hag's second season with United has been a complete bust with the team on the brink of finishing without any European football next summer. Naturally, there have been rumours that the United board was seeking a replacement, with Southgate at the top of the list of candidates to replace the Dutchman.&nbsp;

"I’ve got one thing to focus on. That’s having as successful a tournament with England as possible. Everything else outside of that is a complete irrelevance to me," Southgate was quoted as saying by BBC.

"Well, for me, it's not an issue [distractions]&nbsp;and never has been. I have to deliver a successful tournament for England and there's enough work involved in that. I think everybody would expect that's where my focus should be," he added.&nbsp;

Southgate's current contract with England expires in December and Euro 2024 is the last opportunity for him to win a silverware with, arguably, the most talented England squad ever assembled in recent times.&nbsp;

"There will always be speculation about managers because if you lose a couple of games, you're in trouble - you win a couple of games and it is a different agenda," said Southgate.&nbsp;

"But for me, it [Euro 2024] is a brilliant opportunity. We're looking forward to the tournament. My focus is on how do we go a step further than we went in the last Euros [when they were beaten on penalties in the final by Italy]."

England boss Gareth Southgate has rebuffed the talks linking him to a potential move to Manchester United to replace under-fire Erik ten Hag at the end of the season.

England boss Gareth Southgate has rebuffed the talks linking him to a potential move to Manchester United to replace under-fire Erik ten Hag at the end of the season. Southgate said his attention was firmly on the upcoming Euros and that he intended to see out his contract with the Three Lions. Ten Hag's second season with United has been a complete bust with the team on the brink of finishing without any European football next summer. Naturally, there have been rumours that the United board was seeking a replacement, with Southgate at the top of the list of candidates to replace the Dutchman. "I’ve got one thing to focus on. That’s having as successful a tournament with England as possible. Everything else outside of that is a complete irrelevance to me," Southgate was quoted as saying by BBC. "Well, for me, it's not an issue [distractions] and never has been. I have to deliver a successful tournament for England and there's enough work involved in that. I think everybody would expect that's where my focus should be," he added. England manager Gareth Southgate provides update on replacing Erik ten Hag at Manchester United

Manchester City defender Josko Gvardiol struggled to find his feet at the Premier League club but is now growing in confidence after his goal-scoring exploits in the title run-in, manager Pep Guardiola said. The 22-year-old left back joined the treble winners from German club RB Leipzig in August, signing a five-year deal for a reported fee of 90 million euros ($97 million).

The Croatian international, who had not scored in his previous 32 appearances for City, has now netted five times in his last seven matches to help his side's push towards a record fourth successive title. "There is an aspect in football and in life and that is confidence, confidence when you do things and it's game time, a lot of games and talking about the not proper things that you do and the good things," Guardiola told reporters after Saturday's 4-0 thrashing of Fulham.

"And you cannot forget it is his first Premier League season... so it is not easy to handle it and he struggled in the beginning a little bit, because he came into a team who had just won the treble and he was a little bit shy. "He signed for many, many years and he has proved to himself that he can do it and play with us."

Guardiola gave his players three days off after their 5-1 home win over Wolverhampton Wanderers this month. "On the first day, he (Gvardiol) went into the training centre to make a recovery, so his focus is football and he wants to be better and better and when this happens, you have something special on your hands," the Spaniard said.

City, second in the table with 85 points and one behind Arsenal who have played a game more, travel to fifth-placed Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday.
