Patrick Dorgu connected sweetly with a looping ball on his left foot for the only goal to compound Newcastle's miserable away form despite the visitors dominating the second half.

Patrick Dorgu's first Manchester United goal earned the depleted Red Devils a 1-0 win over Newcastle to propel Ruben Amorim's men up to fifth in the Premier League. Shorn of captain Bruno Fernandes due to injury plus the absent Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo due to the Africa Cup of Nations, Amorim's change of role for Dorgu paid dividends. The Danish international connected sweetly with a looping ball on his left foot for the only goal to compound Newcastle's miserable away form despite the visitors dominating the second half. A first home win in two months takes United level on points with fourth-placed Chelsea, while Newcastle remain down in 11th. After a series of promising performances went without reward in recent weeks, this time United got over the line despite having to mount a rearguard action to secure just a second clean sheet of the season. Amorim responded to the loss of Fernandes by finally switching from his preferred 3-4-3 system to a back four with Dorgu thrust into a more attacking role on the right side of a three behind Benjamin Sesko up front. Dorgu duly delivered his first goal for United since joining from Lecce nearly a year ago. Diogo Dalot's cross was cleared high into the air before the 21-year-old volleyed past Aaron Ramsdale on 24 minutes. Newcastle boss Eddie Howe himself made an early formation change to adapt to a fast start from United. But Howe has struggled all season for answers to the Magpies' woeful form on the road. Newcastle have won just twice in 12 games away from Tyneside in all competitions. Ramsdale denied Dorgu a second at the end of another dangerous United counter-attack before half-time. Yet, Amorim's forward options were dealt another blow when Mason Mount did not reappear for the second half. Jack Fletcher, son of former United midfielder Darren Fletcher, was introduced for his first appearance at Old Trafford. Despite barely being able to escape out their own half, United still had two huge chances to kill the game off. The Tottenham Hotspur captain received a second yellow card for kicking out at Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate before being ordered off the field by referee John Brooks during a 2-1 defeat.

Cristian Romero could be hit with an extended suspension after he was charged by England's ruling Football Association with failing to leave the field and acting in an "aggressive" manner when he was sent off against Liverpool last Saturday. The Tottenham Hotspur captain received a second yellow card for kicking out at Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate before being ordered off the field by referee John Brooks during a 2-1 defeat. Romero's dismissal left Spurs down to nine men as Xavi Simons had already been shown a red card for serious foul play in the first half. Argentina centre-back Romero had first been booked for dissent after complaining he had been pushed by Hugo Ekitike when the forward scored Liverpool's second goal. Romero's red card means he will serve a one-match ban, missing Sunday's match away to London rivals Crystal Palace. But he now faces additional punishment, and a longer ban if found guilty. He has until January 2 to respond to Wednesday's charge. Spurs travel to Brentford on New Year's Day before hosting Sunderland on January 4 and visiting Bournemouth three days later. Manchester United winger Diallo struck early in the second half with a close-range shot to give the Ivorians a hard-earned 1-0 Group F victory over Mozambique in wet Marrakesh.

Amad Diallo and Riyad Mahrez starred as defending champions Ivory Coast and former winners Algeria had contrasting victories on Wednesday when the first round of African Cup of Nations (AFCON) group matches concluded in Morocco. Manchester United winger Diallo struck early in the second half with a close-range shot to give the Ivorians a hard-earned 1-0 Group F victory over Mozambique in wet Marrakesh. Earlier, Algeria cruised to a 3-0 Group E win over 10-man Sudan in Rabat with another winger, former Manchester City star Mahrez, becoming the third player to bag a brace at the tournament. Elsewhere, an early Karl Etta Eyong goal gave Cameroon a tense 1-0 win over Gabon in Agadir and Burkina Faso scored twice deep in added time to beat Equatorial Guinea 2-1 in Casablanca. Ivory Coast, who face Cameroon and Gabon in their remaining group matches, are aiming to become the first nation since Egypt in 2010 to successfully defend the premier African football title. Defeat prolonged the Mozambican pursuit of an AFCON victory -- they have drawn four matches and lost 12 since their 1986 debut. Winger Elias 'Domingues' Pelembe came off the Mozambique bench on 67 minutes at the age of 42, making him the second oldest player to compete at an AFCON after 44-year-old Egypt goalkeeper Essam El Hadary. Diallo ended the brave, well-organised resistance of the Mozambicans early in the second half, firing past Siluane from inside the box after a cross was headed into his path. Cameroon needed only six minutes to score the lone goal of a fiery central African showdown with Gabon as Etta Eyoug slammed the ball between the legs of goalkeeper Loyce Mbaba. Captain Mahrez scored in each half as 2019 champions Algeria eased to a 3-0 win over 10-man Sudan. Mahrez got the opener after just 82 seconds to the delight of the Algerian fans who made up the vast majority of the 16,115 crowd at the Moulay El Hassan Stadium. Now with Al-Ahli of Saudi Arabia, Mahrez got his and his team's second goal just after the hour mark and Ibrahim Maza wrapped up the win late on as Algeria started in the best possible fashion. His appearance on big screens in the ground drew huge cheers from Algerian supporters who will have been delighted to see their team produce a convincing performance. Algeria were eliminated in the first round without a win at each of the last two AFCON tournaments but wasted no time in breaking the deadlock against the group outsiders. The match was little over a minute old when Mohamed Amoura's ball across the penalty box was met by a back-heel from Hicham Boudaoui to tee up Mahrez. He took a touch before firing in. Sudan's chances of getting back into the game were then severely dented when Salaheldin Adil was sent off six minutes before the interval for a second booking for chopping down Rayan Ait-Nouri. Ramy Bensebaini had a goal disallowed for offside moments later but Mahrez made it 2-0 on 61 minutes as he connected with a lovely outside-of-the-boot assist from Amoura. Mahrez, appearing at his sixth AFCON, now has eight goals at the tournament. He came off to an ovation from the Algerian fans late on. Substitute Maza, of Bayer Leverkusen, finished from Baghdad Bounedjah's knockdown with five minutes left to score Algeria's 100th AFCON goal and make it 3-0. Sudan have now won just once in 17 Cup of Nations matches since lifting the trophy in 1970. Earlier in the same group, Burkina Faso came from behind to beat 10-man Equatorial Guinea 2-1 thanks to two goals deep in injury time. Basilio Ndong was sent off just after half-time for Equatorial Guinea but they looked set to win the game when substitute Marvin Anieboh headed in on 85 minutes. However, Georgi Minoungou equalised in the fifth added minute before Leverkusen defender Edmond Tapsoba grabbed a dramatic 98th-minute winner. Ademola Lookman secured a 2-1 win for a wasteful Nigeria against Tanzania in Fes on Tuesday in their opening Africa Cup of Nations match. After the disappointment of failing to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, Nigeria coach Eric Chelle would have hoped for more goals given the opportunities his side created. Star striker Victor Osimhen was among the culprits. He failed to score but could have claimed a hat-trick with better finishing. Nigerian centre-half Semi Ajayi opened the scoring in the first half, before Charles M'Mombwa levelled soon after half-time. However, Atalanta attacker Lookman struck the winning goal shortly after the equaliser to spare Nigeria's blushes. The first half followed a predictable pattern with three-time champions Nigeria pressing and Tanzania soaking up pressure as they sought a first win after three draws and six losses in three previous AFCON appearances. Tanzania goalkeeper Zuberi Masudi suffered a facial injury after advancing off his line to block a shot by Akor Adams. From the resultant corner, Sevilla striker Adams came close as his near-post header hit the top of the crossbar. The east Africans threatened for the first time on 14 minutes with an acrobatic shot from Saimon Msuva comfortably saved by Stanley Nwabali. As rain began to fall in Fes, Nigerian frustrations surfaced with 2023 African player of the year Osimhen upset after being fouled by Ibrahim Hamad. That set-piece led to the Super Eagles taking the lead as the ball was played back to Alex Iwobi, whose cross was nodded into the corner of the net by Ajayi for his second international goal. Samuel Chukwueze had a chance to increase the lead just before half-time, but his close-range shot was tipped over by Masudi. Chelle introduced veteran Moses Simon for Adams in the vain hope of building a wider lead ahead of what is likely to be their toughest Group C match, against Tunisia in Fes on Saturday. Tanzania squandered a chance to equalise with three minutes of regular time remaining as a Mohamed Hussein cross evaded Nwabali, but substitute Kelvin John failed to connect with the ball. Group C action continues later Tuesday with Tunisia taking on Uganda in Rabat. Disclaimer: This story has been published from a news agency feed with minimal edits to adhere to WION's style guide. Bruno Fernandes injury leaves Manchester United facing midfield headache

Ruben Amorim fears Bruno Fernandes will be out for "a while" after the Manchester United captain was injured during Sunday's 2-1 defeat against Aston Villa. Fernandes has started every Premier League game this season, but the Portugal midfielder is unlikely to extend that run any further following his injury setback at Villa Park. The 31-year-old initially played on after pulling up with what appeared to be a hamstring issue just before the break, but he did not return for the second half. Amorim ruled his influential star out of the Boxing Day clash against Newcastle, with severe doubts about his availability for the rest of the Christmas and New Year schedule. "It's a soft tissue. I think he's going to lose some games. I don't know for sure, so let's see," Amorim said. “You never control these things, so we'll see. Goals from Julian Brandt and Maximilian Beier lifted Borussia Dortmund to a nervy 2-0 home win over Borussia Moenchengladbach on Friday and up to second in the Bundesliga table. Brandt's early strike put Dortmund ahead but the hosts, who have dropped a number of points from winning positions this season, once again struggled with the lead. Gladbach's teenage midfielder Wael Mohya forced a reflex save from Dortmund 'keeper Gregor Kobel with 10 minutes remaining, before Beier sealed the victory deep into stoppage time. "It felt good to score a late goal of our own this time and not concede an equaliser," Brandt said to Sky Germany. "A lot of games have ended in draws, so it was extremely important for us to win." The victory took Dortmund six points behind leaders Bayern Munich and three clear of third-placed RB Leipzig, who can return to second with a win at home against Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday. Dortmund coach Niko Kovac praised his side, saying: "We had a short summer break because of the Club World Cup, but we came out of it well. "Of course we'd like to have a few more points, but I think the team is fighting hard." Dortmund came into the match having won 18 of their past 19 home meetings with Gladbach. Former Dortmund midfielder and United States international Gio Reyna returned to the Westfalenstadion for the first time since joining Gladbach in the summer. Handed just his second league start of the season, defender Niklas Suele created Dortmund's opener, drifting in a cross for Brandt to volley home 10 minutes in. The goal was the in-form Brandt's fourth in his past three games. Often criticised for his fitness and workrate, Suele was then on the spot to snuff out a Florian Neuhaus shot with an excellent challenge late in the opening half. Dortmund striker Serhou Guirassy, with just one goal in his past 10 league games, looked to have broken through when he had the ball in the net just after the break but was offside. Having made his senior debut last week, Gladbach's 16-year-old midfielder Mohya almost levelled right after coming on, but his shot was diverted over the crossbar by Kobel. In the seventh minute of stoppage time, Beier -- who had missed a golden chance minutes earlier -- was set up by fellow substitute Fabio Silva, tapping in from close range to wrap up the match for the hosts. Man City face Newcastle in the last four, while Chelsea will take on Arsenal or Crystal Palace in the semis of the EFL.

Rayan Cherki's stunning strike put Manchester City on their way to the League Cup semi-finals with a 2-0 win over Brentford, while holders Newcastle beat Fulham 2-1 on Wednesday. City face the Magpies in the last four, while Chelsea will take on Arsenal or Crystal Palace. Ahead of the hectic festive Premier League schedule, Pep Guardiola could afford to give Erling Haaland the night off as his side secured a sixth consecutive victory in all competitions. Haaland was left on the bench among seven changes by Guardiola at the Etihad. "We have had a run of a lot of games for Erling for example and Ruben (Dias) and the other ones and they have to be ready,” Guardiola said. "We have to do it (give them a rest) and we talked a lot about these days about everyone being connected today." Abdukodir Khusanov was one of those handed a rare start and the Uzbek defender was lucky just to see a yellow card for chopping down Kevin Schade when the German looked set to run through on goal. Guardiola was forced to field the in-form Phil Foden for longer than he hoped as the England international replaced the injured Oscar Bobb after just 20 minutes. But it was Cherki who unlocked the Brentford rearguard action in style 10 minutes before half-time. The Frenchman collected a corner cleared to the edge of the box, cut inside onto his right foot and unleashed an unstoppable effort into the top corner. The home side's second was much more fortunate as Savinho's shot looped over Hakon Valdimarsson via a deflection off Kristoffer Ajer 20 minutes from time. City won the League Cup four years in a row under Guardiola between 2018 and 2021. But this is the first time in five seasons they have progressed to the last four. Newcastle are back in the semi-finals thanks to Lewis Miley's stoppage time header at St. James' Park. A dismal performance in losing 1-0 to local rivals Sunderland on Sunday heaped the pressure on Eddie Howe's men to respond. Yoane Wissa opened his Newcastle account on his first start after just 10 minutes but Sasa Lukic quickly levelled for the visitors. The tie appeared destined for penalties until Miley got a flick to Sandro Tonali's enticing delivery. Newcastle ended a 70-year wait to win a domestic trophy when they won the League Cup last season and Howe is eager for more. "It was important to bounce back from Sunderland, to come back in a positive fashion," he said. "We want to be competitive and win trophies - this one we had a great experience last year we want to do that again." Chelsea booked their place in the two-legged semi-finals early next year with a 3-1 win at Cardiff on Tuesday. Arsenal host Palace in the final quarter-final tie next week. Football's global governing body FIFA said in a statement that it had created a limited number of "Supporter Entry Tier" fixed at $60 for all 104 matches, including the final.

World Cup organisers unveiled a new cut-price ticket category on Tuesday after a backlash by fans over pricing for the 2026 tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Football's global governing body FIFA said in a statement that it had created a limited number of "Supporter Entry Tier" fixed at $60 for all 104 matches, including the final. It said the plan was "designed to further support travelling fans following their national teams across the tournament". FIFA said that the $60 (51 euro) tickets would be reserved for fans of qualified teams and would make up 10 percent of each national federation's allotment. Fan group Football Supporters Europe (FSE), which last week called prices "extortionate" and "astronomical", responded by saying the FIFA was offering too little. "While we welcome FIFA's seeming recognition of the damage its original plans were to cause, the revisions do not go far enough," FSE said in a statement on Tuesday. Last week, FSE said ticket prices were almost five times higher than in 2022 in Qatar, describing FIFA's pricing for 2026 as a "monumental betrayal of the tradition of the World Cup". "If a supporter were to follow their team from the first match to the final it would cost them a minimum of $6,900," it said at the time, adding that World Cup organisers had promised tickets priced from $21 in a bid document released in 2018. Appeasement tactic On Tuesday, FSE said FIFA's partial ticketing U-turn exposed flaws in how prices for next year's tournament had been set. "For the moment we are looking at the FIFA announcement as nothing more than an appeasement tactic due to the global negative backlash," FSE said. "This shows that FIFA's ticketing policy is not set in stone, was decided in a rush, and without proper consultation -- including with FIFA's own member associations. "Based on the allocations publicly available, this would mean that at best a few hundred fans per match and team would be lucky enough to take advantage of the 60 US dollar prices, while the vast majority would still have to pay extortionate prices, way higher than at any tournament before." ALSO READ | From Leonard Hutton to Don Bradman, 5 batters with highest individual score in Ashes The organisation also criticised the failure to make provisions for supporters with disabilities or their companions. Britain's Prime Minister Keir Starmer echoed FSE, stating that FIFA's cheaper ticket category did not go far enough. "I welcome FIFA's announcement of some lower priced supporters tickets," Starmer wrote on X. "But as someone who used to save up for England tickets, I encourage FIFA to do more to make tickets more affordable so that the World Cup doesn't lose touch with the genuine supporters who make the game so special." ALSO READ | From Steve Smith to Joe Root, 5 active batters with most runs in Ashes Announcing the $60 tickets on Tuesday, FIFA said that national federations "are requested to ensure that these tickets are specifically allocated to loyal fans who are closely connected to their national teams". FIFA also said that if fans bought tickets for games in the knockout rounds only to find their team eliminated at an earlier stage, they "will have the administrative fee waived when refunds are processed." It added that it was making the announcement "amid extraordinary global demand for tickets" with 20 million requests already submitted. With patience and a lot of possession, we finally did it," Barca defender Gerard Martin told Movistar. "A clean sheet gives stability to the team and then the goals, they always come." Ferran Torres, chosen to start over Robert Lewandowski after his hat-trick last weekend against Real Betis, might have sent Barca ahead early on but hooked high over the bar from Lamine Yamal's dangerous cross. At the other end, Ante Budimir's low effort was fielded comfortably by Joan Garcia, with Osasuna looking to hit Barca on the counter. Yamal had a couple of drives beaten away in a mostly frustrating first-half for both the teenager and for Barca. Torres headed home from Marcus Rashford's cross but the goal was disallowed for an offside in the build-up. The Spain international sent an acrobatic overhead effort inches wide, and Garcia denied Budimir with another fine save before the break. Eventual breakthrough Osasuna goalkeeper Sergio Herrera tipped a Rashford free-kick to safety early in the second half as Barca sought to extend their winning run. They were having trouble breaking Osasuna down but found a way through when the excellent Pedri roamed forward and found Raphinha on the edge of the box to slam a shot into the bottom right corner. Osasuna's Jorge Herrando, who was sent off on his debut for the club at the old Camp Nou in 2023, had a strike ruled out after Alejandro Catena collided with Barca goalkeeper Garcia. Moments later, Raphinha tapped home at the back post after Alejandro Catena deflected Jules Kounde's cross into the Brazilian's path with four minutes remaining. Raphinha, who started the match out of position in a central attacking midfield role, was one of the club's key players last season as they won a domestic treble and, after a spell out injured, has made an impact on his return. "We've got a lot of good players and Rapha, or whoever else plays inside, in the end they give us a lot of solutions in that position," added Martin.
