Liverpool manager Arne Slot has blamed fatigue for his team’s shocking loss at Bournemouth on Saturday (Jan 24) in the Premier League. Amine Adli’s last kick of the game resulted in the hosts beating the Reds 3-2 in a match for the ages, ending their 14-game unbeaten run across all competitions. Slot helped Liverpool find form after an array of nine losses in 12 months earlier in the campaign. However, his team has failed to win their last five Premier League matches, denting their chances of a Champions League qualification next season. Meanwhile, contrary to their domestic troubles, the Reds took a giant step towards the Champions League last 16 with a 3-0 win in Marseille on Wednesday. Slot’s Liverpool came back from 0-2 down, thanks to goals from Virgil van Dijk and Dominik Szoboszlai, before conceding one in the dying minutes of the game, with Adli hitting the winner to see his team home.
Watch winning goal -

"They probably had even more chances than us (in the final 10 minutes) which shouldn't come as a complete surprise to me knowing that we've played two days before in Marseille. "For the last four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, 10 games we've had to play with the same players (due to) the players we had available and then sometimes a few of them could be at the end of the game a bit tired. "I think that's what you could see at the end today as well." Bournemouth's second goal came while Liverpool were down to 10 men as Joe Gomez was forced off injured to further deplete Slot's options at centre-back. Midfielder Wataru Endo had to deputise at the heart of the defence with Ibrahima Konate absent on compassionate leave after the death of his father and Giovanni Leoni out for the season with a cruciate knee ligament injury. Slot introduced Andy Robertson at half-time despite speculation that the Scotland captain could join Tottenham before the end of the transfer window. The wing-back has just six months left on his contract and is reportedly keen for more first-team action after falling behind Milos Kerkez in the pecking order at Anfield. But Slot insisted that he needs all the bodies he can get right now. "I need all my players," added Slot. "Robbo had to come in at half-time because I always knew another 90 minutes for Milos against a very intense Bournemouth side was not a possibility. "There are a lot of games to play and with the players available I have to manage that as well because the last thing we need right now is another injury." (With inputs from AFP)

Kim Min-jae was sent off for the home side before Kane squandered the chance to score a hat-trick by sending another penalty off the woodwork -- he nevertheless has seven goals in seven Champions League games this season, and 34 in all competitions. "We scored at the right times, were a bit unlucky with the red card but even after that when we went down to 10 men we controlled the game well and earned the three points," Kane told DAZN. Newcastle, Chelsea win' On the other hand, Newcastle United were too strong for PSV at St James' Park, running out 3-0 winners after Yoane Wissa got an early opener and Anthony Gordon made it two on the half-hour. Harvey Barnes then fired in the third on 65 minutes, and Newcastle are in the top eight before completing the league phase away to reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain next week. Chelsea are eighth after edging out Cypriot minnows Pafos 1-0 at Stamford Bridge thanks to a Moises Caicedo header in the 78th minute -- as new coach Liam Rosenior enjoyed a win in his first Champions League game. Manchester City's players will refund ticket costs for fans who flew all the way to the Arctic Circle only to witness a humiliating 3-1 defeat to Bodo/Glimt in the Champions League. City suffered one of the most chastening results in their history on Tuesday as the Norwegian minnows claimed their first Champions League group-stage victory. The entire 55,000 population of Bodo could nearly fit into City's Etihad Stadium, while the financial gulf between the clubs is huge. City's players have agreed to reimburse the cost of tickets for the 374 supporters who made the trip. Tickets for the tie at the tiny Aspmyra Stadion cost around £25 ($33) each. A statement on Wednesday from City's group of captains, comprising Bernardo Silva, Ruben Dias, Rodri and Erling Haaland, said: "Our supporters mean everything to us. Arsenal's joy in Italy contrasted with despondency in Norway for Premier League heavyweights Man City. Kasper Hogh's first half-brace and a second half strike from Jens Petter Hauge at the ecstatic Aspmyra Stadion triggered a seismic upset. Rayan Cherki replied after Hauge's goal, but Rodri's dismissal for two bookings left City in tatters and facing a long trip home. While the pitch may have been artificial there was nothing false about the result, Bodo/Glimt's first group stage win which gave them hope of making the play-offs. "Everything has started to be, since the new year, against us in many, many things," said Guardiola. "I know how good a team Bodo are. I didn't underestimate them. There is not much I know but they reached the semi-final last season of the Europa League and they were fresh in mind. Surprise packages Lens could return to the summit on Saturday should they win at Auxerre, but PSG coach Luis Enrique will be buoyed by a return to form from his top striker. Dembele won the Ballon d'Or last season but has suffered an injury-blighted season so far. His goals, including a stunning lob, on Friday will hearten the PSG faithful, however. A confident Dembele curled a sweet left-footed shot into the bottom corner from outside the box on 13 minutes to open the scoring. He then chipped Lille goalkeeper Berke Ozer from inside the box for a sumptuous second just after the hour mark. "That's the magic of Ousmane, he can do anything, he's just brilliant," said teammate Warren Zaire-Emery after the game. He also netted shortly after the break, popping up unmarked at the far post only for an offside flag to deny him. Bradley Barcola, a late substitute for an industrious but misfiring Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, clipped home the third in stoppage time, pouncing on a defensive mix-up that left him with only Ozer to beat. PSG goalkeeper Lucas Chevalier had little to deal with over the 90 minutes. Fourth-placed Lille harried PSG into spilling several loose balls, one of which offered a half-chance to veteran Olivier Giroud, who chipped the ball onto the bar for an agonising near miss when they were only 1-0 down. PSG started with Dembele, Desire Doue and Kvaratskhelia in a line up similar to the one that beat Inter Milan in the Champions League final last May, but were missing key defender Achraf Hakimi, who will play in the African Cup of Nations final for Morocco on Sunday. The Parisians won the league by 19 points last season but Lens have strung together a nine-match winning run in all competitions to keep pace with the European champions this season. A 19th straight league match without defeat has Massimiliano Allegri's team on 40 points, three away from Inter but also the same amount ahead of champions Napoli who were held by Parma on Wednesday night and sit third. Defeat was harsh on sixth-placed Como who took the lead through Marc Oliver Kempf in the 10th minute but now sit five points from the Champions League positions after being frustrated by Rabiot's match-winning display and a stellar performance from another Frenchman in Mike Maignan. ALSO READ | From Leonard Hutton to Don Bradman, 5 batters with highest individual score in Ashes Milan could have easily been three goals behind before Nkunku thumped home his spot-kick had it not been for goalkeeper Maignan, whose saves allowed the away side to pick Como's pocket. Moments before Adrien Rabiot won Milan's penalty -- helped by an acrobatic tumble -- Maignan pulled off the best of his six saves, keeping out Luca Da Cunha's header from point-blank range and leaving the midfielder baffled as to how he didn't score. And Nico Paz was exasperated when Maignan got his finger tips to the Argentina youngster's powerful low drive, a save which preceded Rabiot's first arrowed strike by moments. ALSO READ | From Steve Smith to Joe Root, 5 active batters with most runs in Ashes Paz also clipped the crossbar on the hour mark as Como continued in vein to push for what would have been a deserved equaliser, but with the clock ticking down Rabiot ended the discussion by clouting a long-range effort past Como goalkeeper Jean Butez -- another Frenchman. Earlier Bologna snapped a seven-match winless streak with an eventful 3-2 win at Verona who sink to the bottom of the table following an 11th defeat of the season. Riccardo Orsolini, Jens Odgaard and Santiago Castro all scored fine goals as Bologna, who lost the Super Cup final to Napoli, moved up to eighth and four points behind Como. Ferran Torres and Lamine Yamal fired Barcelona to a 2-0 win over Racing Santander and into the Copa del Rey quarter-finals on Thursday. Appointed on Monday to replace Xabi Alonso, Alvaro Arbeloa and his side were ousted by Jefte Betancor's stoppage-time winner at the Carlos Belmonte stadium.

Real Madrid fell to a shock 3-2 defeat in the Copa del Rey last 16 on Wednesday as Alvaro Arbeloa's debut as coach ended in humiliation by second-tier opposition. Appointed on Monday to replace Xabi Alonso, Arbeloa and his side were ousted by Jefte Betancor's stoppage-time winner at the Carlos Belmonte stadium. Without French superstar Kylian Mbappe and various other key players, Arbeloa's side struggled against a side currently 17th in Spain's second division. Albacete took the lead through Javi Villar but Franco Mastantuono equalised just before half-time. Jefte put the hosts back ahead after 82 minutes and then scored the winner after Gonzalo Garcia's 91st-minute goal looked to have forced extra time for the 15-time European champions. "Here at this club a draw is already bad -- it's a tragedy. Imagine a defeat like this, it's painful," Arbeloa told reporters. "I'm sure all our fans feel the same way. Even more so when it happens against a team from a lower division, although we already know here how tough any opponent can be. "If anyone is responsible and to blame for this outcome, it's clearly me, the one who made the decisions regarding the line-up, how we wanted to play, the substitutions. "I can only thank the players for the way they welcomed me, for the effort they put in today." After Madrid lost the Spanish Super Cup final on Sunday against rivals Barcelona, president Florentino Perez replaced Alonso with reserve team coach Arbeloa. The Spaniard selected two players currently playing in the reserves he led until Monday -- holding midfielder Jorge Cestero and right-back David Jimenez. As well as Mbappe he left out players including goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois and Jude Bellingham, to rest ahead of the return to La Liga action on Saturday against Levante. "I'd do the same again, I brought a team capable of winning," said Arbeloa. The first half was mostly played under heavy gloom, not just Madrid's mood but an intense fog which set in a few minutes into the game. Vinicius Junior smashed high and wide from long range as neither side produced any clear chances until shortly before half-time when the hosts took a shock lead. Villar escaped Mastantuono's attentions at a corner and nodded Albacete in front after 42 minutes. Arbeloa's side levelled before the break through, also capitalising on a corner, with Mastantuono turning home from close range. ALSO READ | From Leonard Hutton to Don Bradman, 5 batters with highest individual score in Ashes Jefte's double Albacete frustrated Madrid after the break and then burst into life in attack to take the lead once more. Andriy Lunin pushed away an effort from Riki but shortly afterwards Jefte put Alberto Gonzalez's side ahead. Gonzalo Garcia's clearance fell to the striker in the box and he fired down into the ground with ball bouncing up and flashing past Lunin. Madrid's young forward made amends by pulling his team level in stoppage time with a well-placed header. ALSO READ | From Steve Smith to Joe Root, 5 active batters with most runs in Ashes However there was a sting in the tale as Jefte produced a sensational lofted finish past Lunin to snatch a famous late victory for Albacete, their first ever against Real Madrid. "I'm not afraid of failure, I can understand that someone would want to call this defeat that," added Arbeloa. "Failure is on the path to success, for me they are not in opposite directions." Madrid captain Dani Carvajal, who came on as a substitute and could not stop Jefte's winner, said the players would work hard to revert the club's slump. "We're not at our best moment, we have to work hard, we all have to give a lot more, it's a reality," Carvajal told reporters. "We ask for forgiveness for the fans. We were not up to the level of this club, me first of all, and we will give our lives in the next games and months (to turn it around)." Morocco have been under enormous pressure to deliver a first AFCON title for their country in half a century but will be confident of coming out on top against Senegal with their support behind them.

Goalkeeper Yassine Bounou was the hero with two saves in the shoot-out as hosts Morocco beat Nigeria 4-2 on penalties to set up an Africa Cup of Nations final showdown this weekend with Senegal after a tense last-four clash on Wednesday finished 0-0 at the end of extra time. Bounou saved from Samuel Chukwueze and brilliantly from Bruno Onyemaechi, allowing Youssef En-Nesyri to convert the winning kick and spark wild celebrations among the 65,458 crowd inside the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat. There was joy but also relief for Hamza Igamane, who had appeared distraught after his kick -- Morocco's second in the shoot-out -- was saved by Nigeria goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali. He was the only Moroccan player to fail to score in the shoot-out, however, with captain and talisman Achraf Hakimi among those who converted their penalties. Morocco will now play Senegal on Sunday for the title after the Lions of Teranga defeated Mohamed Salah's Egypt 1-0 in the other semi-final earlier in Tangiers thanks to a Sadio Mane goal -- that will be a clash between the top two African sides in the FIFA world rankings. "It was one of the hardest matches we have had against a very solid and talented team," said Morocco coach Walid Regragui, who played in the last Atlas Lions side to reach the final when they lost to Tunisia in 2004. "I am very happy for the players and for the Moroccan people who really deserve this. "It is a great gift for them to be in the final but we will need to recover quickly because we put a lot of energy into this game." Morocco have been under enormous pressure to deliver a first AFCON title for their country in half a century but will be confident of coming out on top against Senegal with their support behind them. However, as their dream remains alive it is an agonising way for Nigeria's hopes to end, two years after they lost the final to the hosts in Ivory Coast -- they had been hoping to win a fourth Cup of Nations crown to match the tally of rivals Ghana. Led by two recent winners of the African player of the year prize in Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman, Nigeria had been arguably the best team at the tournament up to the semi-finals and the top scorers with 14 goals. But they created next to nothing during the 120 minutes here and must settle for Saturday's third-place play-off against Egypt in Casablanca before watching the World Cup from afar following their failure to qualify. ALSO READ | From Leonard Hutton to Don Bradman, 5 batters with highest individual score in Ashes Hard to take for Super Eagles "The players fought for every ball and it is difficult to lose on penalties, but this is football and we have to accept it," said Nigeria coach Eric Chelle. "It is difficult to play here in Morocco because you have to play against the team and against the crowd." Doubts about the Moroccan team's ability to handle the enormous pressure of playing at home had dissipated following their win over Cameroon in the quarter-finals. The 2022 World Cup semi-finalists had been whistled by their own fans at times during the group phase here, but this time those supporters did their bit by responding to any Nigerian spell of possession with deafening jeers. ALSO READ | From Steve Smith to Joe Root, 5 active batters with most runs in Ashes A frenetic opening spell to the contest saw the Moroccan winger Brahim Diaz -– probably the tournament's outstanding player -– curl a shot wide before Alex Iwobi teed up Lookman at the other end for a shot that was well saved. Morocco had chances, including a free-kick from Hakimi and a shot from Ismael Saibari that was well saved by Nwabali. However, the second half was more cagey and the clock ran down on normal time, while the spectre of penalties grew larger as the extra half-hour progressed. It seemed Nigeria were settling for the shoot-out, even taking off Osimhen as they hoped to repeat their win on penalties in the 2024 semi-final against South Africa. However, Morocco had also famously won on penalties against Spain at the last World Cup and they repeated the trick to reach the final of their Cup of Nations. Antoine Semenyo made himself an instant Manchester City hero as Pep Guardiola's men took a giant stride towards the League Cup final with a 2-0 win at Newcastle. The Ghana international, who joined from Bournemouth for £65 million ($87 million) last week, opened the scoring and also had a second goal controversially ruled out. But Rayan Cherki delivered what could be the knockout blow to the holders in the 98th minute. The Magpies ended a 70-year wait for a domestic trophy by winning the League Cup last season, but will need a heroic fightback to reach Wembley when the sides meet again for the second leg of the semi-final on February 4. Semenyo also scored on his debut on Saturday in a 10-1 demolition of Exeter in the FA Cup. In previous years he would have been cup-tied after featuring for Bournemouth earlier in the competition. Newcastle boss Eddie Howe made clear his dissatisfaction before the game with a rule change this season that allows players to play for two clubs in the one campaign and City took full advantage. Guardiola showed his desire to reach the final for the first time since 2021 as Erling Haaland made a first League Cup start in three years in a strong City selection just days before they visit Manchester United in the Premier League. Yoane Wissa blazed a glorious early chance over the bar as Newcastle roared out of the blocks in front of a packed St. James' Park. But that was the closest either side came in a cagey first half. City goalkeeper James Trafford had been a long-term target for Newcastle prior to his return to the Etihad from Burnley in July. ALSO READ | From Leonard Hutton to Don Bradman, 5 batters with highest individual score in Ashes The England under-21 international has had to play second fiddle to Gianluigi Donnarumma for most of the season but proved his worth with a stunning save to claw away Wissa's looping header early in the second half. Seconds later, Bruno Guimaraes blasted against the post as Newcastle pressed for the opening. But they were caught with a sucker punch at the other end when Jeremy Doku sped towards the by-line and his cross was turned by Bernardo Silva into the path of Semenyo to prod home from close range. Liga leaders Barcelona thrashed rivals Real Madrid 3-2 in an entertaining Clasico to retain the Spanish Super Cup in Saudi Arabia on Sunday (Jan 11). Brazilian winger Raphinha completed a brace, while veteran striker Robert Lewandowski was also on target as Barcelona inflicted a Spanish Cup final beating on Xabi Alonso’s men. This win also marked Barcelona’s record-extending 16th triumph in this competition. Midfielder Frankie de Jong also conceded a foul on Kylian Mbappe late in the game, only to see a straight red, while the star Madrid forward could barely feature in the final stages after a knee sprain. After Raphinha sent Barcelona ahead Vinicius Junior pulled Madrid level with a fine individual goal to kick-start a frenetic end to the first half in Jeddah. Lewandowski chipped Barca back in front but Gonzalo Garcia struck deep in stoppage time to send the teams in level at the break. The battle was decided by a deflected Raphinha effort after 73 minutes, as Barca claimed the fourth trophy of coach Hansi Flick's reign. Alonso is still looking for his first after arriving in June, and Madrid's run of five consecutive wins across all competitions was brought to an end by their arch-rivals.

"Whatever way you lose it hurts, but it's clear that this was a very even game, hotly competed, with a bit of everything," Alonso told Movistar. "We were very close to equalising, we fought it out until the end and I have to congratulate Barca." Barca thrashed Madrid 5-2 in last season's final, also at the King Abdullah Sports City stadium, but this was a far closer affair. "We're very happy, another trophy, it's always a big game against Madrid," Lewandowski told Movistar. "We played well in the first half, the second too, we were looking for more goals but we won and that's the most important thing." Flick, who led Barca to four Clasico wins over Madrid last season in four clashes, opted for Lewandowski up front over Ferran Torres and brought teenage star Lamine Yamal back in on the right wing. It was a scrappy start in the Saudi evening heat, with Barcelona keeping the ball and Madrid sitting deep to resist them, while looking to find Vinicius Junior on the counter. The Brazilian had not scored in his previous 16 matches but offered a potent threat, flying down the left and forcing Joan Garcia into the first save. Barca began to turn up the heat and Raphinha found a breakthrough after 36 minutes. Moments after the winger fired a fine chance badly wide, he made up for it with a low, early strike from just inside the area, across Thibaut Courtois and into the bottom corner. WATCH - Barcelona's first goal -

Madrid pulled level with a superb Vinicius strike, floating in from the left, nutmegging Jules Kounde and slotting home. Barcelona went back ahead four minutes into first-half stoppage time, with Lewandowski dinking past Courtois after being played in by Pedri. However, Madrid rapidly hit back just before the interval through Gonzalo Garcia, who finished well while falling after Dean Huijsen's header bounced back to him off the crossbar.
‘Always there’
The second half was a calmer affair, with fewer chances as the teams slowed down. Mbappe was warming up on the sideline when Barcelona nosed ahead, with Raphinha's shot from outside the box deflecting in off Raul Asencio to leave Courtois with no chance. The Brazilian is in superb form and it was his seventh goal in his last five matches across all competitions. "He's always there at the right moment," said Lewandowski. Alonso sent on Mbappe for the last 15 minutes, trying to find a third goal and force a penalty shoot-out. The French forward could not get a sight of goal but Barca midfielder De Jong was sent off for a high lunge on him. Despite Madrid's numerical advantage Barca had the best chance in stoppage time with Marcus Rashford firing wide when through on goal. Asencio might have grabbed an equaliser at the death but headed straight at Garcia. The last four winners of the Spanish Super Cup have gone on to claim La Liga and Barcelona will be hoping it proves a platform for success once again. They have won 10 straight games across all competitions and lead La Liga, despite an inconsistent start to the season. (With inputs from AFP)
