Selena Gomez's Spanish drama Emilia Perez earned an outstanding response from the audience at the Cannes Film Festival. Director Jacques Audiard returned to the prestigious film festival with a musical drama thatearned a nine-minute standing ovation, the longest of this year's festival so far.
It was a heartwarming moment for the entire team. Watching the entire crowd erupt in cheers and blow whistles, Selena becameemotional andwas seen wiping her tears. Director Audiard greeted the crowd from the balcony.
For the unaware, Audiard is a regular at the Cannes Film Festival, and this is his sixth movie in the main competition. Apart from Selena, the movie stars Zoe Saldana, Édgar Ramírez and Karla Sofía Gascón.

Saldaña isa frustrated lawyer in the movie, while Selena Gomez is a drug lord’s wife, and Karla Sofía Gascón is the drug cartel leader Manitas.
A synopsis for the film reads, "Overqualified and undervalued, Rita is a lawyer at a large firm that is more interested in getting criminals off the hook than bringing them to justice. One day, she is given an unexpected way out, when cartel leader Manitas hires her to help him withdraw from his business and realize a plan he has been secretly preparing for years: to become the woman he has always dreamt of being."

Over the years, Audiard has been a Cannes regular. He won the Palme d’Or (Festivals biggest honour) in 2015 for Deephan. His other filmsat thefestival include Watch the Men Fall, A Prophet, Of Rust and Bone andThe Olympiads.
