In her brand new podcast for Spotify, the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle has opened up about the criticism she faced when she began her relationship with Prince Harry. Markle alleged that she was called 'ambitious' for dating the Prince.

Markle opened up in the first episode of her new Archetypes podcast titled 'The Misconception of Ambition with Serena Williams' and said that when she began dating Prince Harry, it was seen as a "terrible, terrible thing."
Markle added that as a child she knew being ambitious was a positive trait but later learnt a "thing or two" about the labels and conventions that hold women back.

In her new podcast series, Markle expresses her desire to explore “the boxes women have been placed in for generations.”

“I don’t remember personally feeling the negative connotation behind the word ambitious until I started dating my now husband, and apparently ambition is a terrible, terrible thing for women,” she stated in the podcast. “Since I felt the negativity behind it, it’s really hard to unfeel it. I can’t unsee it either in the millions of girls and women who make themselves smaller, so much smaller on a regular basis.”

Markle had friend and tennis superstar Serena Williams as her guest on the first episode of the show. The Duchess explained that through her podcast she wants to explore stereotypes that inhibit women, "boxes like diva, crazy, the B-word" and get to the bottom of where they come from, why they've stuck around for so long.

She also added that she wanted to share her experiences and those of other women, in the hope that her own "own lived experience will help other women open up to reveal the layers of thrive within all of us".

In the podcast, Markle and Williams also discussed how women were perceived differently once they became mothers. "The double standard between how men and women are treated after having kids is so, so real. I’ve felt it," Markle said.

Markle's conversation is seen as a fresh take on her and Harry's strained relationship with Britain's royal family which was called the 'firm' earlier by Markle herself. The couple quit their roles as senior members of the royal family in 2021 and moved to the US to live a more private life. They share two children together.

You would think that inflation and recession would force people to cut people on spending, buy cheaper alternatives to what they would otherwise buy, and be more thrifty in general. But call it a glitch in the matrix or whatever, but sometimes things do not make sense. Sometimes during hard times, people buy more luxury stuff, not less. There is a term called 'lipstick index', coined by Leonard Lauder of Estée Lauder cosmetic company, according to which women buy more lipstick and other cosmetics when the economy is in the doldrums. The basis of the theory is that lipsticks are cheap as far as "luxuries" go so they can be bought without a lot of ramifications on the finances compared to dresses and shoes.

What led Lauder to develop the lipstick index theory?

Lauder developed the theory after observing the significant increase in sales of lipstick in the recession during the early 2000s. He put forward that when the economy falls, sales of cosmetics go up.

Natallia Bambiza, who works at a market research firm NPD Group, wrote in a blog post, "At times when discretionary income is scarce and splurging on expensive non-essential goods is not an option, buying lipstick could be a way of escapism. Priced significantly lower than designer accessories, apparel, or jewelry, a “nice-to-have” lipstick plays the role of “affordable luxury.” In fact, lipstick is one of the products most purchased on impulse, exceeded only by lip gloss, according to the Makeup Consumer Report from NPD."

Is the theory valid now?

The theory does not have many takers these days as it has been disproven several times, including during the Covid-19 pandemic. For instance, there have been recessions in which women have cut down on buying cosmetic items like they cut down on buying everything else that is non-essential. Also, there have been times when the economy is cruising along just fine when the sales of cosmetics have shot up.

The increase in sales that Lauder observed may just be a fluke.

Should we reject the lipstick index?

But let's not reject the lipstick index summarily. The lipstick index theory also played out in the US during the depression. As per Business Insider, makeup sales got a boost in a time which was among the worst in modern American history.

Can the rise in makeup sales augur a downturn in the economy?

Maybe. Maybe now. Economists have been predicting a full-blown recession that should strike in the next few months. And as per media reports, the sales in lipstick and lip-gloss are seeing a considerable increase.

Canadian Linda Evangelista has opened up about the damaging 'fat-freezing' cosmetic procedure she went through. Evangelista, who is the cover model for British Vogue's upcoming September issue, said that she was persuaded to undergo the fat reduction procedure, which is also called cryolipolysis, by TV advertisements. The procedure, Evangelista said, left her 'brutally disfigured' and she has spent 5 years in hiding.

She told that Vogue UK that she "couldn’t live in that pain any longer. I knew I had to make a change, and the only change was to tell my truth." Fat-freezing is performed by a company called Zeltiq Aesthetics that has rebranded the procedure with a more innocuous sounding name CoolSculpting. The procedure, although approved by Food and Drug Administration, remains controversial. It is increasingly being preferred over other fat reduction approaches as it does not require an incision. But CoolSculpting is not recommended for those who are overweight or obese. Instead, it is meant only for 'spot' fat reduction.

Evangelista, 57, added, “Those CoolSculpting commercials were on all the time, on CNN, on MSNBC, over and over, and they would ask, ‘Do you like what you see in the mirror?’ They were speaking to me. It was about stubborn fat in areas that wouldn’t budge. It said no downtime, no surgery and… I drank the magic potion, and I would because I’m a little vain. So I went for it – and it backfired."

In September last year, Linda filed a lawsuit against Zeltiq Aesthetics for the disfigurations on her body, alleging that her fat cells increased instead of decreasing as the procedure claimed. Later, as per Vogue, she was diagnosed with paradoxical adipose hyperplasia, a rare side-effect of cryolipolysis.

Women who are vegetarian are more likely to experience hip fractures in later life than those who frequently eat meat, a UK study has found.

Researchers analysed health and diet records of more than 26,000 women and found that over a roughly 22-year period, vegetarians were a third more likely to break a hip than those who regularly ate meat, the Guardian reported.

The reasons for the greater risk are unclear, but researchers suspect some vegetarians may not get sufficient nutrients for good bone and muscle health, leaving them prone to falls and fractures.

"The message for vegetarians is don't give up your diet, because it is healthy for other things and environment friendly, but do take care to plan well and don't miss out on nutrients that you exclude when you don't eat meat or fish," said James Webster, a researcher at the University of Leeds.

Vegetarian diets are often considered healthier than the ones that contain meat and can reduce the risk of diabetes, obesity, heart disease and certain cancers.

But the study published in BMC Medicine highlights the importance of a balanced diet whatever people eat, the Guardian reported.

"It`s likely that vegetarians, for one reason or another, and potentially because of lower intakes of important nutrients, have weaker bones and lower muscle mass and both of those things predispose people to hip fractures," Webster said.

About 90 per cent of hip fractures are linked to falls, which are more common in older people, who tend to be frailer and have weaker bones.

But fractures can often drive further frailty, which increases the risk of more falls and worse frailty.

The researchers suspect vegetarians are more likely to be underweight than meat eaters, and that beyond having weaker bones and muscles may also have less fat, which can act as a cushion when people fall, the Guardian reported.

Given the findings, Webster said vegetarians may want to consider eating fortified cereals with added iron and B12 for bone health, and to ensure they are getting enough protein, through foods such as nuts, legumes and beans.

She modelled wearing three sets of the brand’s well-liked Fit Pro earpods that she designed. The new pods will be available in three neutral tones-Moon, Dune, and Earth, which are meant to either "blend in or stand out," as Kardashian explains.

Sharing a teaser video on Instagram a day before, Kardashian is seen wearing a metallic bronze-coloured front-zip crop top, which she matched with bike shorts, Page Six reported. She is being given touch-ups by her team along with adjusting the headphones in her ear.

Issey Miyake's life and career in pictures: Everything to know

Issey Miyake, a Japanese fashion designer with a worldwide career spanning more than 50 years, died at the age of 84. Miyake's funeral had already taken place, with "only family attending" in accordance with his wishes, and no public celebration was planned.

Who was Issey Miyake?

Issey Miyake was a Japanese fashion designer who was born in Hiroshima in 1938. In August 1945, Miyake was just seven years old when the United States detonated an atomic bomb on the city. He survived the disaster, which killed an estimated 140,000 people on impact and effectively ended World War II three days later with the bombing of Nagasaki.

In 1970, he founded the Miyake Design Studio in Tokyo, and shortly after, he launched his first Paris store. His career was in full swing by the 1980s, when he experimented with materials ranging from plastic to metal wire and even handcrafted Japanese.

Issey Miyake and his perfume connection

Miyake released his debut perfume, L'Eau d'Issey, in 1992 in collaboration with Japanese cosmetics giant Shiseido. The perfume became a cult classic because of its fresh and airy aroma and beautiful container, which Miyake modelled on a view of the moon behind the Eiffel Tower from his Paris flat.
Miyake pioneered a proprietary form of permanent micro-pleating in the 1980s that employed a heat-treating technology to achieve a distinct and enduring aesthetic. Rather than pleating the fabric directly, the complicated method entailed creating clothes two or three times their ultimate size before folding, ironing, lacing them into paper, and pressing them with a heat press. Miyake's pleated works could be machine washed and air dried without losing their form since the texture was added to the sewed clothing. The style was so successful that the designer produced a full range called Pleats Please in 1993, which is still in production and in high demand today.\
