India, the largest producer of mangoes globally, marks National Mango Day on July 22nd. We show you some delicious recipes to make the most of mango season!

The Good Life: A tribute to the Mango!

July 22 marks World Brain Day! This year's theme is called "Brain Health for all" and this year's campaign focuses on 5 key messages, which include raising awareness about brain health, talking about prevention of brain diseases, advocacy of optimal brain health, education for all and widening access to resources and treatment.

To mark the occasion, WION spoke to a few experts about positive lifestyle changes that promote good brain health. Here's what we got to know!

Tip 1 - Don't compromise on sleep and relaxation

According to Dr Kiran Rukadikar, bariatric physician and obesity consultant, celebrity nutritionist, and founder of DietQueen App, sleep involves "great changes in brain activity. It energises you, improves your mood, helps in digestion, relaxes your muscles and tissues, and improves your immune system. Sleep for at least 6-7 hours every night. If you are exercising, then you need a little more sleep".

The doctor further added, "Practising meditation and managing stress may help fend off the age-related decline in brain health. Stay positive. Be happy."

Tip 2 - Eat nutritious foods

Dr Kiran Rukadikar also shared that we can support our brain health and boost our alertness, memory, and mood by strategically including a few food items in our diet. For example, a diet that includes fish, eggs, nuts, chocolate, blueberries, and pumpkin are always great for your brain health.

Tip 3 - Exercise

Did you know exercise improves blood flow in the brain and memory too? It also stimulates chemical changes in the brain that enhance learning, and improve mood.

If you are not used to playing any sport, you can start by walking or jogging for at least 90 minutes every day.

Tip 4 - Don't forget to socialise

Spending time with good and caring friends is the most serene thing to do in a day. So ensure that you meet your loved ones often. Engage in stimulating conversations and stay in touch with your family and friends to maintain good brain health. Also, leading an active social life can protect you against memory loss.

Tip 5 - Your brain, mind it

Dr Shirish Hastak, Neurologist and Regional Director for Neurology, Stroke and Neurocritical Care at Global Hospital Parel, Mumbai, also spoke to WION on World Brain Day 2022. He shared, "Your brain is like a muscle, use it or lose it is the mantra that works. There is a concept called 'brain gym', which means that if you use it, you will not lose it. The health of your brain is determined by how you use it. When we talk about brain health, we're talking about your ability to use it in a variety of ways."

Mental exercise is just as critical as physical exercise in keeping your brain fit and healthy. Mental exercises may improve your brain’s functioning and promote new brain cell growth, decreasing your likelihood of developing brain disorders. Like your muscles, you have to use your brain regularly or you will find it difficult to use it properly.

It is never too late to learn something new that you might have dreamed of in childhood. So experts suggest that you start fresh, and learn new things.

While suggesting a few mental exercises, Dr Hastak said, "Try to learn a new language. Learn a new musical instrument to keep your brain fit and healthy. Drawing is also beneficial for your mental health. There's also a technique called brain mapping that can be of help to many."

Tip 6 - Keep your weight in check

Did you also know that reducing weight and fat is linked to improved brain health and longevity? Experts suggest that one must not be overweight as it can impair cerebral circulation and create millions of free radicals that damage cells everywhere in the body including in the brain.

Tip 7 - Think of prevention

We all know that prevention is better than cure. And, keeping that in mind, several experts suggest that we don't skip our annual check-ups, follow our doctor’s recommendations and take medications as prescribed. They also suggest that we engage in a brain-healthy lifestyle to live a better life.

Hypertension, diabetes, depression, head trauma, higher cholesterol, and smoking increase the risk of brain disorders.

Dr Arun B. Shah, Director, Neurosciences, Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital, also shared his views on World Brain Day with us. In an exclusive conversation with WION, Dr Shah said, "Brain is the temple of our body, and to keep it clean and healthy, we must keep the following things in mind. Regular physical activity and a balanced healthy diet including anti-oxidants like fruits, berries, green vegetables, nuts, whole grains and legumes are the key to a healthy brain. It not only keeps us energized and elevates the mood but also prevents us from many chronic ailments."

"Simultaneously engaging the brain in stimulating activities like playing chess, sudoku, music, learning new languages and developing new hobbies helps to keep our brain networks working. With increasing modernization, sleep hygiene is another aspect that is often neglected. Adequate, timely and disciplined sleep is of paramount importance in cleansing our system and rejuvenating our cells. In this COVID era, where we have been forced to be confined to our homes, constant social support should be sought to dissipate our stress and to work hand in hand towards a healthy body and mind," said Dr Shah.

7 ways to rock asymmetrical hemlines

It looks like American singer Erika Jayne has landed herself in legal trouble. According to a report by Page Six, Christina Fulton, the ex-girlfriend of Nicolas Cage, has filed a lawsuit for $700,000-plus against Erika Jayne and two former Girardi & Keese attorneys for alleged fraud and theft. In her court filings that were submitted on Friday, Fulton has accused Jayne’s estranged husband, attorney Tom Girardi, and his ex-colleagues Samantha Gold and John Kelley Courtney, of stealing from her settlement money.

Fulton, 55, endured severe injuries in a car accident in January 2016 and soon after recovering, sought legal representation from the then-prestigious Girardi & Keese law firm. The case was concluded in a confidential settlement agreement filed on March 18, 2019, with a settlement amount of USD 924,300, per the suit. Gold was Fulton’s primary counsel, while Courtney worked as a senior attorney on the case, but Girardi owned and controlled the company at the time.

In the court documents, Fulton mentions that on July 14, 2022, through "newly discovered financial documents" she learned about where her settlement funds actually went. The lawsuit revealed that Fulton’s settlement check had been deposited into a Girardi and Keese bank account without her consent on April 8, 2019.

"This was a complete outright forgery as [Fulton] never endorsed this check and certainly never agreed to have it deposited," the lawsuit claims. "This negotiated check was in fact a forgery and a lie. The check was never held in trust but spent. It is beyond shocking and the pale that the firm would conceal the arrival of the check and not obtain Ms. Fulton’s endorsement as required by law."

The court filings also noted that Fulton had only received a total of USD 190,000 of her settlement between April 2019 and September 2020. Fulton’s lawyers ascertain that it was Girardi’s regular pattern "to dupe his clients into waiting for money by dribbling small payments." She also received an advance of USD 5,000, leaving a USD 744,300 balance, which is the amount she is seeking in damages.

Fulton’s attorneys have also claimed to have evidence relating to the settlement funds, which were given to Girardi & Keese in three separate checks on different dates. Fulton’s lawsuit further alleged that Jayne had received her funds via the "Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" star’s company, EJ Global. The funds were transferred to Pretty Mess Inc. afterward.

Fulton claimed that Jayne and Girardi had used her funds like their own "assets" to "pay for their lavish lifestyle."

"For at least 12 years, all of her expenses were paid by Girardi Keese as she was generating them. No one withdrew money from the firm other than Erika Girardi," the lawsuit claimed.

Fulton’s endorsement as required by law." The court filings also noted that Fulton had only received a total of USD 190,000 of her settlement between April 2019 and September 2020. Fulton’s lawyers ascertain that it was Girardi’s regular pattern "to dupe his clients into waiting for money by dribbling small payments." She also received an advance of USD 5,000, leaving a USD 744,300 balance, which is the amount she is seeking in damages. Fulton’s lawsuit further alleged that Jayne had received her funds via the "Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" star’s company, EJ Global. The funds were transferred to Pretty Mess Inc. afterward. Fulton claimed that Jayne and Girardi had used her funds like their own "assets" to "pay for their lavish lifestyle." "For at least 12 years, all of her expenses were paid by Girardi Keese as she was generating them. No one withdrew money from the firm other than Erika Girardi," the lawsuit claimed. An unknown self-portrait of artist Vincent van Gogh has been discovered tucked behind another of Van Gogh's works- hidden by layers of cardboard. The painting is from a time before Van Gogh's left ear was severed in 1888. The self-portrait shows the artist's ear prominently.

The portrait is supposed to have been hidden from public view for centuries and unearthed after an X-ray was taken of another of Van Gogh's works- Head of a Peasant Woman (1885). Van Gogh was known to use both sides of canvases to paint in order to save money.

The extraordinary find by the National Galleries of Scotland is believed to be a first for a UK institution. The sketch is believed to be an early work of the artist and perhaps his first exploration of self-portraits, which he later became known for.

The layers of cardboard and glue were thought to have been applied ahead of an exhibition in the early 20th century.
The sketch will be available for viewing at the upcoming exhibition 'A Taste of Impressionism' at the Royal Scottish Academy, Edinburgh. The image can be viewed as an X-ray image through a specially crafted lightbox.

Experts state that the process of removing the glue and the cardboard from the sketch will require delicate conservation work and one has to take care that the drawing of the Peasant Woman is not harmed.

The discovery has been described as 'thrilling' by Professor Frances Fowle a senior curator of French art at the National Galleries of Scotland. "Moments like this are incredibly rare. We have discovered an unknown work by Vincent van Gogh, one of the most important and popular artists in the world," she said.

The exhibition, 'A Taste for Impressionism' will be from 30 July to 13 November.

British primatologist Jane Goodall has got a Barbie in her likeness, fulfilling a longtime wish of having her own doll to inspire young girls.

Mattel Inc unveiled the new Barbie, which the toymaker says is made from recycled plastic, as part of its Inspiring Women Series, nodding to Goodall's groundbreaking studies of chimpanzees and conservation efforts.

Dressed in a khaki shirt and shorts and holding a notebook, Goodall's doll has a pair of binoculars around her neck and David Greybeard by her side, a replica of the first chimpanzee to trust the primatologist as she conducted her research at Gombe National Park, in what is now Tanzania in east Africa.

"I wanted a doll to be me even before this idea came up. I've seen...little girls playing with Barbie dolls and certainly at the beginning, they were all very girly girly and I thought little girls need...some choice," Goodall told Reuters.

"Mattel has changed its range of dolls and there's all kinds of astronauts and doctors and things like that. So many children learn about me at school. They'll be thrilled to have the Barbie doll."

Goodall, 88, began her research in east Africa in 1960, observing that chimpanzees make tools, hunt and eat meat, and show compassion, among other traits.

"When I got to Gombe, it was beautiful, my dream had come true," she said. "But for four months the chimps ran away from me...so although the forest was wonderful, I couldn't enjoy it until this David Greybeard lost his fear and helped the others to lose their fear too."

"I see us at the mouth of a very long, very dark tunnel with a little shining star at the end and it's no good sitting at the mouth of the tunnel and saying 'Oh, I hope that star comes to us.' Hope is about action," Goodall said.

"We... work around all these obstacles between us and the star, which is climate change, loss of biodiversity, poverty, unsustainable lifestyles, pollution, you name it. And as we go along the tunnel, we reach out to others because there are people working on each one of these problems but so often they're working in silos."
