Three giants of the cruise industry will return to the seas within weeks, with Norwegian Cruise Lines on Monday becoming the latest to announce its US ships will set sail starting in early August.

After a year of crippling losses, Carnival and Royal Caribbean said late last week their first post-pandemic cruises will set sail in July, after the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) earlier this month gave the green light to allow trips with passengers and crew who received Covid-19 vaccinations.

"We have been waiting for a very long time to announce a resumption of cruising from the US. We are so proud to be sailing for the first time in over a year from our special homeport of Seattle to the breathtaking state of Alaska," Harry Sommer, chief of Norwegian Cruise Line, said in a statement.

Cruise operations were suspended on March 14, 2020 when the CDC issued a "no sail order" to prevent the further spread of the coronavirus. Several ships already had deadly outbreaks on board.

Some cruise ships resumed operations in Europe and elsewhere last year, but the ban remained in place in the United States.

All three companies will offer trips from Seattle to Alaska as their inaugural cruises.

Norwegian said "all crew and passengers must be fully vaccinated to embark."

Carnival said its trips will be available to guests who received their final dose at least two weeks prior, and likewise Royal Caribbean will require vaccinations of all passengers over the age of 16, and after August 1 all those over the age of 12.

Norwegian will offer week-long voyages starting August 6, while Royal Caribbean will leave port first with a similar trip July 19 and Carnival's Holland American Line will start July 24.

"It's been a tough year for everyone, but people clearly have pent-up demand to cruise again, and we can't wait to get back to what we do best," Royal Caribbean Chief Executive Richard D. Fain said in last week's statement.

An inquiry into how the BBC got a sensational 1995 interview with Princess Diana in which she disclosed intimate details of her failed marriage found on Thursday that the journalist involved had acted deceitfully and the broadcaster had covered it up.

The BBC set up the investigation, headed by former senior Court judge John Dyson, in November following allegations from Diana`s brother Charles Spencer that he had been tricked into introducing her to journalist Martin Bashir.

"Mr Bashir deceived and induced him to arrange a meeting with Princess Diana," the report said. "Mr Bashir acted inappropriately and in serious breach of the 1993 edition of the Producers’ Guidelines on straight dealing."

During the 'Panorama' interview, watched by more than 20 million viewers in Britain, Diana shocked the nation by admitting to an affair and sharing details of her marriage to the heir to the throne, Prince Charles.

It was the first time Diana, who died in a Paris car crash in 1997, had made public comments about her doomed marriage.

Her remark that "there were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded" - a reference to Charles rekindling his relationship with Camilla Parker Bowles, now his second wife - was particularly damaging to the Windsors.

Dyson`s report found that Bashir, then a little known reporter, had shown Spencer fake bank statements to persuade him to set up a meeting with Diana.

Spencer says Bashir had told him Diana was being bugged by the security services and two senior aides were being paid to provide information about her.

'LIED'

After it was aired, Bashir repeatedly lied to his bosses about how the interview was obtained, the report said. As questions continued, BBC managers failed to scrutinise his version of events properly and covered up facts about how Bashir had secured the interview.

"Without justification, the BBC fell short of the high standards of integrity and transparency which are its hallmark," the report said.
The interview propelled Bashir into the limelight and he later went on to carry out high-profile interviews with other celebrities, notably the late US singer Michael Jackson.

Last week, the BBC announced that he was leaving his current job as the publicly funded broadcaster`s religious affairs editor because of ill health.

Bashir issued a statement in which he apologised for the fake statements, but said he stood by his evidence from 25 years ago and that he did not believe they had prompted Diana to give the interview.

Dyson`s report included a handwritten note from Diana penned a month after the interview in which she said she had no regrets and that Bashir did not show him any information of which she was not previously aware.

"By his deceitful behaviour...Mr Bashir succeeded in engineering the meeting that led to the interview," the report said. "But it is important to add that Princess Diana would probably have agreed to be interviewed."

The BBC said there had been clear failings and it would hand back the awards the programme won.

"While the BBC cannot turn back the clock after a quarter of a century, we can make a full and unconditional apology." BBC Director-General, Tim Davie, said in a statement.

Diana`s sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, have previously welcomed the investigation as a chance to find out the truth of what had happened.

For most of us, this pandemic is the most stressful time of our life. There is stress resulting from the grief of losing a loved one and by the fear of losing a near one. Stress from trying to stay safe and from adjusting to the constantly-changing new normal is also stirring trouble.

High stress levels can be fatal. Stress can lead to high blood pressure or what's known as hypertension. And prolonged hypertension can lead to severe medical conditions.

So, while we have finally started addressing mental health problems resulting from anxiety and stress, it’s time we also acknowledge and spread awareness about hypertension, especially today on account of World Hypertension Day.

What is hypertension?

It is when the force of blood against your artery walls becomes high enough for it to result in health problems. Uncontrolled hypertension can result in heart attack or stroke and it can also narrow the blood vessels in your kidney, preventing them from functioning normally.

Hypertension can also lead to thickening or narrowing of blood vessels in the eyes - resulting in loss of vision. It can affect your memory and also lead to dementia. 1.3 billion people worldwide have hypertension. The Mayo Clinic says most people with high blood pressure do not show symptoms even when their blood pressure reaches dangerous levels.

Some people, however, have headaches, shortness of breath or nose-bleeding. There are two types of hypertension. Each has its own causes.

First, there is primary hypertension which develops over time and has no specific causes.

Most people who have hypertension fall under the primary category. It is sometime linked to genes, lifestyle choices, poor diet, or physical changes like obesity or ageing.

Secondary hypertension can be caused by sleep apnea, problems with thyroid, a kidney disease, alcohol abuse and side effect of medications. Secondary hypertension is more severe than the first one. The WHO says hypertension is a major cause of premature deaths worldwide.

The good news is, hypertension can be treated by reducing mental stress, making little changes in our diets and by regularly checking our blood pressure and consulting our doctors. You can reduce the risk of hypertension by making small changes like adhering to the “Dash” diet.

Dash stands for dietary approaches to stop hypertension like consuming whole grains, fresh vegetables, low-fat dairy products, reducing your alcohol intake, or exercising regularly. The pandemic is really stressful but hypertension can result in Covid complications.

So while we come to terms with prolonged online learning, long hours of working from home, additional caregiving responsibilities, it is important that we keep our stress levels at check. Do things at home that make you happy. This World Hypertension Day, here's how to keep your stress levels in check

With the imminent arrival of American movie idol George Clooney, France's rose vineyards have cemented their status as a prime target for wealthy investors wading into one of the hottest sectors of the wine market.

"No matter how many times I say I'm not selling, the offers keep getting higher," said Jean-Louis Croquet, a 78-year-old statistician who made his fortune with the TNS Sofres polling firm.

Having bought Chateau Thuerry and its 400 hectares in 1998, Croquet has seen firsthand the race to buy up Provence properties along the French Riviera in recent years.

Deep-pocketed individuals as well as luxury giants like LVMH are getting in on the action, hoping to tap into the growing global demand for rose wine.

"I've had dozens of offers since the beginning of the year, including from LVMH, which is hunting like crazy," said Croquet, whose son Thomas Mars of the pop band Phoenix is married to film Sofia Coppola.

He divides the new players into two categories: "The ones with tons of cash to invest, and the real wine lovers, like me."

"The big groups want to dominate the rose market because they've seen it's a fabulous business that benefits from a lot of marketing," he added.

Croquet counts as a neighbour the British investor James Dyson, owner of the Domaine des Rabelles, which advertises a "Bio-Active" growing method for its grapes.

Another Briton, real estate billionaire Mark Dixon, also owns a Provence vineyard, as does the French watchmaker Richard Mille and the cashmere king Eric Bompard.

Agents specialising in French vineyards say buying acres in Provence is still cheaper than trying to gain a foothold in the more storied vineyards of Bordeaux or Bourgogne.

And for French investors at least, big wine investments are often motivated by more than a love of wine -- ploughing cash into a vineyard can often be used to avoid taxes on the proceeds of selling a mature business.

- 'No limit' -

The dry and rugged hills of the Var department, on the Mediterranean coast between Marseille and Cannes, are home to four of the most famous rose appellations -- Bandol, Coteaux Varois, Cotes de Provence and Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence.

Clooney plans to buy the Domaine Le Canadel near the village of Brignoles, which includes an 18th-century manor with its own swimming pool and tennis court.

It's about a half-hour drive from a vineyard the "Star Wars" producer George Lucas bought in 2017, and from the Miraval estate owned by the Hollywood ex-couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.

"It's a very dynamic market," said Adam Dakin of the Wine Objectives real estate agency, who estimates that around a third of Provence wine acreage has changed hands over the past 20 years.

He recently brokered a purchase by William Chase, the British millionaire behind Tyrrells crisps, and the 2020 sale of a vineyard owned by US industrialist Tom Bove to a French deli meat magnate, Michel Reybier.

This year, the Chanel fashion house made headlines with a second vineyard purchase on the idyllic island of Porquerolles, just off the coast La Londe-les-Maures, where LVMH bought the Chateau Galoupet in 2019.

Even if Clooney's purchase isn't quite a sure thing -- the sale is being contested by another purported buyer -- his interest is getting a cautious welcome from locals.

"It gets people talking about us and leads to higher-quality wine overall," said Luc Niviere, 56, the fourth generation of his family-owned Domaine des Trois Terres, who would be one of Clooney's closest neighbours.

Niviere said he still marvels at the "pharaonic" works carried out at the Fontainebleau estate by the French IT services entrepreneur Jean-Louis Bouchard, including a "panoramic" tasting cellar that can be rented out for private events.

"But if tomorrow I want to buy a hectare of vines, it'll be difficult because there's no limit to what these guys can spend," he said.

Prince Harry quit his role as a senior member in the UK royal family last year in order to break a family cycle of "pain and suffering" after realising that his father Prince Charles treated him "the way he was treated." Harry appeared recently on 'Armchair Expert' podcast with host Dax Shepard and spoke candidly about his decision to move to US with his wife Meghan Markle and son Archie. This was Harry's first chat since March, when he and his wife spoke to Oprah Winfrey in an explosive interview as they raised raised allegations of racism in the royal family, and said Charles had cut them off financially. Harry told Shepard that while he did not did not blame his father, he had resolved to avoid making the same mistakes with his own children. "When it comes to parenting, if I've experienced some form of pain or suffering because of the pain or suffering that perhaps my father or my parents had suffered, I'm going to make sure that I break that cycle," said Harry.
If a bottle of Petrus 2000 that Christie's is selling tastes out of this world it might be because it aged for 14 months aboard the International Space Station.

Christie's hopes the bottle, now up for grabs in a private sale, will fetch $1 million, which would make it the most expensive wine ever sold.

The bottle is one of a batch of 12 that European startup Space Cargo Unlimited sent into orbit as part of research into how food and drink matures in space.

The wine spent almost 440 days in space, or the equivalent of 300 trips to the Moon, Space Cargo Unlimited Nicolas Gaume said in a press release.

It left for the ISS on November 2, 2019 in a spacecraft known as a Cygnus capsule and returned on January 14, 2021 aboard a Dragon capsule manufactured by Elon Musk's SpaceX.

Tests carried out in March by a wine science institute in Bordeaux found that the bottles "positively endured all the constraints of preparation, travel, and storage on the ISS," Christie's said in its press release.

At the end of a blind tasting, the researchers noted "remarkable differences in the colour, aroma and taste components," between the celestial bottles and equivalents which had remained on earth.

"The wines sampled were commended for their complexity and considered to be great wines," Christie's added.

The sale is expected to smash the record price for a standard 750 ml bottle of wine.

The most expensive was a 1945 Romanee-Conti Burgundy which sold at Sotheby's in New York for $558,000 in 2018.

The private sale means the buyer and price will remain confidential unless the buyer chooses to identify themselves publicly.

Proceeds will go towards funding future space missions focused on agricultural research.

'Blind box' craze grips China's youth and mints toymakers a fortune

Gossip is often considered socially taboo and dismissed for its negative tone, but a quirky study from Dartmouth College illustrates some of its merits. Gossip facilitates social connection and enables learning about the world indirectly through other people`s experiences.

Gossip is not necessarily spreading rumours or saying bad things about other people but can include small talk in-person or online, such as having a private chat during a Zoom meeting. Prior research has found that approximately 14 per cent of people`s daily conversations are gossip, and primarily neutral in tone.

"A gossip is a complex form of communication that is often misunderstood," says Eshin Jolly, a post-doctoral researcher in the Computational Social Affective Neuroscience Laboratory (COSAN) who co-authored the study with Luke Chang, an assistant professor of psychological and brain sciences and director of the COSAN Lab at Dartmouth.

"It can be a means of social and substantive connection beyond its typical negative connotation," adds Jolly. Jolly and Chang were curious why people in their personal and professional lives spend so much time exchanging information about themselves and other people and sought to determine why people gossip and what function it serves.

They created a game online to examine the role of gossip and how it manifests as information becomes more uncertain within the game. Participants played 10 rounds of the game together in six-person groups. In each round, players were given USD 10 and could choose to keep the money or invest any portion of it into a group fund that was multiplied by 1.5x and divided equally among the players.

The game creates an inherent tension between selfish freeriding and cooperative behaviour and is considered what researchers refer to as a public goods game.In some conditions, information was restricted so that participants could only observe the behaviour of a few other players in their group."Our inspiration was creating a life-like scenario, in which you`re a member of a community and affected by the actions of all other community members, but most of whom you rarely observe and engage with directly," Jolly explained.

In some games, players could privately chat with another player in the group. This allowed players to relay information about other players` behaviour to their partner, such as whether another player was freeriding. Afterwards, players reported their willingness to play with each player again.

Published in the journal Current Biology, their findings demonstrate how gossip is a "rich, multifaceted communication" with several social functions.

Different types of gossip emerged depending on the amount of information available. Spontaneous conversations about others occurred more frequently during games when players could only observe the behaviour of a few of their group members. When players could directly observe all of their group members, they tended to chit-chat and discuss a wider array of topics.

Participants relied on second-hand information from their partners to stay informed about other peoples` behaviour that they could not see, illustrating how gossip enables individuals to learn from the experiences of others when direct observation is not feasible.

The findings also showed that participants who chatted with each other felt the most connected with each other at the end of the game and even shared similar impressions of the other players in their group.

Chang explains that "By exchanging information with others, gossip is a way of forming relationships. It involves trust and facilitates a social bond that is reinforced as further communication takes place."In a typical public goods game, players contribute less over time and an unravelling effect occurs that propagates through a network of people. However, in this study, cooperation declined less over time when players could privately communicate. Communication increased collective cooperation.

The researchers explain that gossip should not be relegated to just "baseless trash talk". According to the paper, the team`s findings on the role of gossip are consistent with creating a "shared reality" in which friends and colleagues often find common bonds, establish alliances, exchange personal information, and discuss the behaviour of others to establish a consensus of socially acceptable behaviour.

"Gossip can be useful because it helps people learn through the experiences of others while enabling them to become closer to each other in the process," says Jolly.

What started as an early pandemic joke evolved into a full-fledged 'fight' as hundreds of people named Josh gathered in Lincoln, Nebraska, to battle it out over their shared name.

An Arizona college student named Josh Swain sent a Facebook message last April to dozens of other people who shared his first and last name.

"You're probably wondering why I've gathered you all here today," the 22-year-old wrote. Then is typed along with a random date, April 24, 2021, and instructions to "meet at these coordinates," which happened to be in Lincoln.
All the people named Josh in Arizona, USA had a 'Duke' moment this weekend. What started as an early pandemic joke evolved into a full-fledged 'fight' as hundreds of people named Josh gathered in Lincoln, Nebraska, to battle it out over their shared name.

All the people named Josh in Arizona, USA had a 'Duke' moment this weekend. What started as an early pandemic joke evolved into a full-fledged 'fight' as hundreds of people named Josh gathered in Lincoln, Nebraska, to battle it out over their shared name. An Arizona college student named Josh Swain sent a Facebook message last April to dozens of other people who shared his first and last name. "You're probably wondering why I've gathered you all here today," the 22-year-old wrote. Then is typed along with a random date, April 24, 2021, and instructions to "meet at these coordinates," which happened to be in Lincoln. there is only one pic.twitter.com/OVqeOUY3Xo — joshua swain (@joshswainaz) April 24, 2021 × "We fight, whoever wins gets to keep the name, everyone else has to change their name, you have a year to prepare, good luck," Swain wrote. Swain said it was "entirely a joke" and didn't think anything would come of it, the Lincoln Journal Star reported. That was until a few months ago when friends brought it up again and Swain decided to go for it. He bought a plane ticket to Lincoln and posted details about the event on social media. Swain told the Lincoln Journal Star he wasn't sure if anyone would show up but hundreds arrived at the large greenspace at Air Park for the Battle of the Joshes, equipped with the pool noodles that Swain invited people to bring. The spectacle showed the fighters with their pool noodles, decked in Spider-Man- and Star Wars-themed costumes. The #JoshFight has begun.
Researchers have investigated how philosophical approaches can be used to think in new ways about pain and its management. The researchers advocate not merely reducing chronic pain management to searching and treating underlying physical changes but instead adopting an approach that focuses on the person as a whole.

Dr Sabrina Coninx from Ruhr-Universitat Bochum and Dr Peter Stilwell from McGill University, Canada, have investigated how philosophical approaches can be used to think in new ways about pain and its management. The researchers advocate not merely reducing chronic pain management to searching and treating underlying physical changes but instead adopting an approach that focuses on the person as a whole.

Their work was published online in the journal `Synthese`.It is not currently possible to treat chronic pain effectively in many cases. This has encouraged researchers from various disciplines to consider new approaches to pain and its management over recent years.

"Pain research and clinical practice do not take place in a vacuum, but instead involve implicit assumptions regarding what pain is and how it can be treated," says Sabrina Coninx, research assistant at the Bochum research training group Situated Cognition. "Our aim is to shed light on these assumptions and discover how we can think in new ways about pain and its management with the help of philosophical approaches." In their work, the authors develop a holistic, integrative and action-oriented approach.

Viewing patients as a whole specific term, they suggest three things: firstly, addressing pain should involve more than just looking for and treating underlying physiological changes. A holistic approach places the focus on patients as a whole and creates space for their experiences, concerns, expectations and narratives. The influence of socio-cultural practices in the generation of chronic pain should also be taken into account. For example, pain patients are often initially encouraged to protect themselves from injury and avoid activity, which may be helpful in the beginning but can contribute to chronification in the long run.

Secondly, according to the researchers, chronic pain should be understood as a dynamic process in which many different factors interact in a non-linear way. The initial cause of pain, for instance, is not necessarily the cause of its chronification and also does not need to be the most crucial factor in treatment. The complex interaction of subjective experience, expectations, learned behavioural patterns, neural reorganisation, stigmatisation and other factors, therefore, needs to be considered.

Thirdly, according to Coninx and Stilwell, patients should be encouraged to interact with their environment and identify possibilities for action. This is based on the assumption that chronic pain fundamentally changes the way in which patients perceive themselves and their relationship with their environment.Pain treatment could therefore involve helping the patient to increasingly notice positively associated and personally meaningful options for action and view themselves as capable of taking action again. There is then less focus on the body as an obstacle, and instead, the patients pay more attention to how they can overcome limitations. (ANI)

Paintings by Pablo Picasso, Piet Mondrian and Vincent Van Gogh went on display at Christie`s in London on Thursday ahead of a May sale, with the auction house encouraging art fans to book viewings while museums remain closed in Britain.

The three oil paintings are the highlights of the upcoming "20th Century Evening Sale" on May 13 in New York. They were previously on show in Hong Kong.
The sale will be led by Picasso`s 1932 work "Femme assise près d`une fenêtre (Marie-Thérèse)", a portrait of the artist`s mistress, which is seen selling around $55 million.

"It`s an incredibly iconic image. It hasn`t been seen up at auction since 2013," Keith Gill, head of the Impressionist and Modern Art department at Christie`s London, told Reuters.

"And the appreciation of Marie-Therese portraits, particularly from 1932, has very much grown since that time. So this will be a stand-out price for the artist."
Mondrian`s "Composition: No. II, with Yellow, Red and Blue" makes its first public outing in nearly 30 years. The painting has been in private hands since it last appeared at auction in 1993, Gill said. It is estimated to sell in the region of $25 million.

"Mondrians of this quality, of this iconic sort of modernist image, are incredibly rare. The vast majority are in museums and ... we haven`t had a Mondrian of this quality at auction since 2015," he said.

Van Gogh`s "Le pont de Trinquetaille" is seen selling for $25 million to $35 million. To see the artworks, visitors must book viewings online, with numbers capped in line with local COVID-19 restrictions. Under Prime Minister Boris Johnson`s roadmap out of lockdown, museums are set to open doors from May 17.

"There is this perception that you have to arrive at the front door and be met by various security staff to walk in the building but Christie`s is very much an open door policy," Gill said.

"This art may well disappear from view now for 20, 30 years. It is a fantastic opportunity for people to come and see art that is museum quality when unfortunately the museums are still not yet open."

Capes, flags and helmet-like hats dominated the Burberry catwalk on Wednesday in what designer Riccardo Tisci described as a "modern armour" collection for women this winter.

In a runway presentation filmed at the British brand`s flagship London Regent Street store, models strutted in an array of outerwear adorned in faux fur as well as block coloured dresses with fluttering fringes and cape-like sleeves.

There were also tops and skirts with flag intarsias or boldly coloured geometric prints, boxy jackets, fringed shorts and tapered trousers, with cuffs at the ankles.
Tisci, who joined Burberry in 2018, put capes on the back of jackets, dresses and coats - including the label`s trademark trench. One version came in shiny gold lame`.

The autumn/winter 2021 womenswear line called "Femininity" paid tribute to "the indomitable force of Mother Nature and the widespread British craft and outdoor movements of the early 20th Century", according to show notes. "Throughout my life, my mother has been this incredible force of nature ... so, naturally, I have always been drawn to strong women and, in turn, they have also given me the confidence to express my own femininity," Tisci said.

"I wanted this collection to feel truly emblematic of the power of feminine energy: a modern armour that captures its characteristic fierce aura ... This presentation is a love letter to women and a celebration of their incomparable strength."

Tisci accessorised the looks, which came in mainly earthy tones mixed with dabs of bright colours, with oversized bags, tight stretchy sock boots and hats reminiscent of helmets.
Wednesday`s presentation follows February`s unveiling of Tisci`s first menswear-focused collection for Burberry during London Fashion Week.

In an effort to raise awareness on climate change and offset its effects on the environment, The Jurni, a highly curated newsletter on travel and culture, based in London/New Delhi has launched a unique initiative this Earth Day.

The Jurni has gamified the concept of carbon offsetting flight emissions in a rather clever way, wherein readers are given the opportunity to help offset carbon emissions from air travel.

Carbon offsetting is an activity that reduces the carbon emissions caused by humans to be released into the atmosphere, a known cause for global warming.

As the urgency of the climate crisis looms, founder and CEO of The Jurni, Priyam Sharma states, “The pandemic changed the way we felt about the world and what matters now more than ever.”

“Because travel is core to The Jurni, we are re-envisioning what greener, more mindful tourism looks like,” the company’s website says.

As part of this initiative, once you subscribe to The Jurni’s free newsletter, you are invited to select from popular domestic flight routes you would like to offset, learning about how much CO₂ is emitted per flight and contribute to The Jurni’s goal of offsetting 100 metric tonnes of carbon for 2021.

Here’s the clever bit: every flight is associated with referrals so each time anyone signs up, The Jurni plants trees with the support of their charity partner, The Air Foundation, to help offset travel, allowing readers to not just dream of distant lands, but a more hopeful future.

Focused on culture and travel, this newsletter was launched in 2020 and has been a true pandemic success story.
