Russia-Ukraine war: Putin slams increase in Western arms deliveries to Kyiv

The German defence minister Christine Lambrecht quit on Monday (January 16) after several controversies. The resignation from Chancellor Olaf Scholz's government came after a series of gaffes during her time in office.

The series of gaffes and her statements appeared to many as tone-deaf. Also, doubts were raised about the 57-year-old's ability to revive the country's armed forces. She also faced flak for months over Germany's stuttering response to the war in Ukraine.

Lambrecht said that she asked the chancellor to dismiss her from the office of federal minister of defence. She added, "The months-long media focus on my person hardly allows for objective reporting and discussion about servicemen and women... and security policy decisions in the interest of the citizens of Germany."

Lambrecht faced criticism for her New Year's video, which she posted on social media. In the clip, she was seen praising her "special experiences" as defence minister in 2022.

Members of the opposition Christian Democratic Union (CDU) dubbed the video message as tone-deaf. The opposition also demanded her resignation.

The resignation has come at an extremely crucial point as the West has been attempting to revive efforts to help war-torn Ukraine as pressure to deliver battle tanks to Ukraine is increasing.

He also praised Lambrecht for her work. He said, "She worked with immense engagement to get away from the paths trodden for decades so that we could manage the major restart that's necessary both for national defence and also for Ukraine."

India survived a barrage of attacks in the first half and could not give a finishing touch to their dominance against England, held to a goalless draw in their second league match of the FIH Odisha Hockey Men`s World Cup 2023 at the Birsa Munda International Hockey Stadium here on Sunday.

Both India and England had started their campaigns by winning their opening matches against Spain and Wales.

So, their clash on Sunday was expected to be a battle for the top spot in Pool D and the first half of the game proved the expectations were accurate as an edgy half of hockey unfolded in Rourkela in front of a packed crowd, with neither team giving an edge, and neither gaining one.

Despite several penalty corners and opportunities for both teams, there was no finishing touch to the attacks as the teams went into the break at the level footing. England earned five penalty corners in the first quarter but failed to capitalise on any of them. India had only one PC in this period.

India got into the rhythm in the second quarter, earning three penalty corners compared to two by England.

The second half saw the hosts, ranked fifth as compared to England at sixth, dominate possession and territory with midfielder Hardik Singh being the standout player, but once again there were no finishing touches to be found in the circle.

Mandeep Singh did get the ball in the back of the goal towards the end of the 3rd quarter but the whistle had already been blown for a foul before the goal. Phil Roper was on the end of a great long pass, which just left him with the keeper to beat, but his attempt to lift the ball over goalkeeper P.R Sreejesh went just wide and India breathed a sigh of relief.

The final scoreline remained 0-0, but a major concern for India will be the health of standout player Hardik Singh who appeared to pull up with a groin injury towards the end of the game.

English keeper Oliver Payne was awarded player of the match and said: "We had a good game overall but are a little disappointed not to have capitalised on the scoring opportunities we had today. It was a game we could`ve won, but it`s a hard-earned point and we will take it."

Both India and England have four points from two matches. India will now to Bhubaneswar for their third league match against Wales while England will take on Spain, who have three points from two games, in their third match.

Nepal's sad history of aviation disasters: A timeline of deadly plane crashes in the Himalayan nation

Google issued a warning over Android phones stating that smartphones will become more expensive in India because of the Competition Commission of India's (CCI) latest ruling. It is said that the costs might increase for app developers, equipment makers, and eventually consumers.

Google also mentioned that the new antitrust order to change how the company markets its Android platform might also pose security threats to users besides driving up costs. The magnitude of any change in costs will be more comprehensive as Google powers 97 per cent of smartphones in India.

This comes after CCI imposed a fine of $161 million on Google in October last year for exploiting its dominant position in Android. The company was also fined for abusing its power through Play Store.

It had also asked the tech giant to change restrictions imposed on smartphone makers related to pre-installing apps as the tech company licenses its Android system to smartphone makers.

Experts argued that Google's imposition of restrictions is anti-competitive, for example, mandatory pre-installation of its apps. On the other hand, the company say that such agreements help keep Android free.

The issue reached the Indian court when Google India approached the Supreme Court. It challenged the order passed by National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT).

As quoted by the news agency Reuters, Google's filing, which is not public, read: "Tremendous advancement in growth of an ecosystem of device manufacturers, app developers and users is at the verge of coming to a halt because of the remedial directions."

"Google will be required to make far-reaching changes to the Android mobile platform which has been in place for the last 14-15 years," it added.

'Google is refusing to pay fines'

During the court hearing on Monday (January 16), CCI's counsel Mukul Rohatgi alleged that Google is not willing to pay. But in the same case, it had paid a fine in the European court.

The CCI lawyers said, "Their (Google) grievance that they cannot pay the fine is false as they have in 2017 paid over 4 billion euros in an EU case. The EU court has also considered them as abusing dominant position. Here in India because it's a third-world country they are not paying."

Next, the court will hear the same matter on Wednesday.

'Google is refusing to pay fines' During the court hearing on Monday (January 16), CCI's counsel Mukul Rohatgi alleged that Google is not willing to pay. But in the same case, it had paid a fine in the European court. The CCI lawyers said, "Their (Google) grievance that they cannot pay the fine is false as they have in 2017 paid over 4 billion euros in an EU case. The EU court has also considered them as abusing dominant position. Here in India because it's a third-world country they are not paying." Next, the court will hear the same matter on Wednesday.
