COVID-19: Hong Kong scraps its contact tracing app

Apple Inc. has exported more than $2.5 billion of iPhones from India from April to December, Bloomberg reported on Monday (January 9). The amount is almost twice the previous fiscal year’s total. The report also highlights how some of the Western tech companies are shifting from China when it comes to production. Apple is among other big names that are exploring alternatives to China.

Reports previously revealed that China was the primary location of about 44-47 per cent of Apple suppliers' production sites until 2019. Now the scenario is changing gradually, especially after simmering tensions between the United States and China.

Citing people familiar with the matter, the Bloomberg report noted that Foxconn Technology Group and Wistron Corp have each "shipped more than $1 billion of Apple's marquee devices abroad in the first nine months of the fiscal year ending March 2023".

People, who requested not to be identified, also revealed private information and told the news agency Bloomberg that Pegatron Corp. is on track to move about $500 million of the gadgets overseas by the end of January.

In a report published in Al Jazeera last month, it was mentioned that China was the primary location of about 44-47 per cent of Apple suppliers' production sites, but Beijing's share fell to 41 per cent in 2020. The report further mentioned that it further fell to 36 per cent in 2021.

Amid the shifting dynamics, JPMorgan has estimated Apple could make 25 per cent of all iPhones in India by 2025. Notably, Apple began assembling its latest iPhone models in India just last year, but the nation aspires to become a hub of production units, giving competition to China.

The identity of the speaker is not revealed but a fact-check published on Saturday (January 7) by the French news agency AFP stated that it searched the phrase "80 Canadian doctors died" and found a tweet indicating the man is Chris Shoemaker.
AFP fact check revealed that the video was filmed at a protest in Toronto on October 22 last year.
Illinois House on Friday (January 6) approved a ban on dozens of sem-iautomatic weapons. The ban was one of the promises by Gov. JB Pritzker during the campaign. The ban also includes the delivery, manufacture and purchase of assault weapons. Pritzker's main point of reelection bid last year was the ban.

It is expected that the bill will pass the state Senate and Pritzker will sign it this week after the House voted 64-43 to outlaw .50-caliber guns and cartridges.

News agency the Associated Press noted that the ban doesn't define the term semi-automatic but listed specific types or brands of 20 pistols and five dozen rifles.

The ban comes after last year's Highland Park massacre. The entire United States was left in shock when a mass shooting occurred on July 4 during an Independence Day parade in Illinois. Seven people were killed and 48 others were injured.

During the discussions over the ban, Rep. Bob Morgan, a Deerfield Democrat, was leading the negotiations on the issue. Morgan had attended the July 4th parade in the Chicago Suburb of Highland Park. Now, the bill has moved to the Senate, where it would take 30 votes to pass.

The House has approved the version, which was a substitute measure submitted late Thursday by House Speaker Emanuel "Chris" Welch. It basically increases the maximum magazine capacity to 12 from 10.

It further targets age as it has removed a previous provision barring those under 21 from obtaining a Firearm Owner's Identification card. This particular ID is needed to handle guns in Illinois.

Illinois House approves ban on dozens of semi-automatic weapons; now bill heads to state Senate

The government has confirmed that England is set to ban single-use plastic cutlery and plates in order to tackle the problems related to pollution, Daily Mail reported on Sunday (January 8).

Media reports last month mentioned that the government has been mulling over the ban. Now, the latest reports suggest that Thérèse Coffey, who is the environment secretary, is set to ban single-use plastic items.

She said, "I am determined to drive forward action to tackle this issue head on. We've already taken major steps in recent years – but we know there is more to do, and we have again listened to the public's calls."

She also added, "This new ban will have a huge impact to stop the pollution of billions of pieces of plastic and help to protect the natural environment for future generations."

The report mentioned that the ban may include plastic plates, trays, bowls, cutlery, balloon sticks and certain types of polystyrene cups and food containers next week—most probably Saturday.
