Tesla has literally launched a price war with its rivals as it announced on Friday (January 13) that it will cut the price of its best-selling electric vehicle (EV) models. It said that the cut will be up to 20 per cent in Europe and the United States. The announcement comes as competition continues to rise in the growing EV industry. In early trading on Friday, Tesla shares fell as much as 4.5 per cent though there was some recovery later. The shares of Elon Musk-led company have plummeted for more than a year.

Analyst Dan Ives of Wedbush Securities said: "It's no secret that demand for Tesla is starting to see some cracks in this global slowdown for 2023."

Ives said the price cut was the "right move" and "a clear shot across the bow at European automakers and US stalwarts (GM and Ford) that Tesla is not going to play nice in the sandbox."

A report by Wall Street Journal noted that the discount now makes it possible for buyers of Tesla's US-built Model Y to take advantage of a tax credit in the US by bringing the price of the car below a $55,000 cap.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday received sanction to prosecute former Bihar chief minister and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad Yadav in the land-for -job scam. Last year, the CBI had filed an FIR in the land-for-railway-job case and named Lalu Yadav, his wife and daughters as accused in the case along with several others. The alleged scam took place when Lalu Prasad Yadav was Railway Minister between 2004 to 2009.

The CBI had in July 2022 arrested Bhola Yadav, who used to be the Officer on Special Duty (OSD) to Lalu Prasad Yadav when he was railway minister, in the alleged land-for-job case.

The FIR reads that during the period 2004 to 2009. various persons were appointed as substitutes on group D post in different zones of the Railway in exchange for land, by the unknown public servants of the Indian Railway and later they were regularized.

It was further alleged that unknown public servants of the Indian Railway did not follow the instructions/guidelines issued by the department prevalent during the relevant period for appointment of substitutes in group D post in railways.

It further reads that enquiry has revealed that some individuals who were residents of Patna, Bihar were appointed as substitutes on group D posts during the period 2004-2009 in different zones of railways at Mumbai, Jabalpur, Kolkata, Jaipur, Hajipur and in lieu thereof the individuals themselves or their family members transferred their land in the name of family members of Lalu Prasad Yadav, then Minister of Railway, and a Company AK Infosystems Private Limited.

"Out of seven instances of land transfer, it is revealed that three sale deeds were executed in favour of Rabri Devi, wife of Lalu Yadav, one sale deed was executed in the name of Misha Bharti, daughter of Lalu Prasad Yadav, one sale deed was executed in favour of M/s AK Infosystems Private Limited, in which later Rabri Devi became major shareholder, in the year 2014 and currently she is one of the directors of the company. Two gift deeds were executed in favour of Hema Yadav, daughter of Lalu Prasad Yadav," it reads.

The enquiry has prima facie revealed that a total of 12 persons were appointed as substitutes in six different Zones of Railway during the period when Lalu Prasad Yadav was Minister of Railway i.e. from 2004 to 2009 in exchange for above mentioned seven instances of land transfer.

Interestingly, in most of the cases of land transfer, payment to the sellers was shown to be done in cash. The current value of the above said seven parcels of land including the land acquired through gift deeds as per the existing circle rate is about Rs 4.39 crore.

The enquiry has prima facie indicated that Lalu Prasad Yadav as Minister of Railway, as a public servant abused his official position for obtaining a pecuniary advantage in the name of his family members in the form of land in the matter of appointment of substitutes in group D post in different Zones of Railway.

CBI conducted searches at 17 locations belonging to Lalu Yadav and his family members in Delhi and Bihar in May 2022.

Back in August 2022, the CBI conducted raids at 25 different places reportedly in connection with the land-for-job scam.

In Bihar, the raids were conducted at the properties linked to RJD MLC Sunil Singh and three MPs Ashfaque Karim, Faiyaz Ahmed and Subodh Roy.

Russia on Friday claimed that its forces have taken control of Soledar, a town in eastern Ukraine, which remained a hotspot in the past few days due to Moscow's offensive. But Kyiv has denied the claims stating that heavy fighting is ongoing. The Russian defence ministry said that "on the evening of January 12, the liberation of the city of Soledar was completed." The town is known for being the largest salt mine in Europe and has a greater significance as it is just 15 kilometres from Bakhmut. Also, its 200 kilometres of underground tunnels have given a tactical advantage to the troops. The defence ministry called the "liberation" important for the continuation of successful offensive operations in Donetsk, referring to a region in eastern Ukraine that Moscow is seeking to capture fully. Watch this report: × The Russian Defence Ministry's spokesman, Lt Gen Igor Konashenkov, said: "The liberation of the town of Soledar was completed in the evening of January 12." Konashenkov added that the development was important for the continuation of offensive operations in the Donetsk region. He said that taking control of Soledar would allow Russian forces to cut supply lines for the Ukrainian forces in the Donestsk city of Bakhmut. They will also be able to block and encircle the Ukrainian units there. In the initial claim, Russia didn't mention the involvement of the Wagner mercenary group founded by Yevgeny Prigozhin. Later, the Russian army praised the "courageous" forces of the mercenary group Wagner in an unusual recognition of the private fighting force. "This combat mission was successfully implemented by the courageous and selfless actions of the volunteers of the Wagner assault squads," the Russian defence ministry said in a statement. In an attempt to extend its campaign to strengthen control over online content, China has acquired "golden shares" in tech firms Alibaba and Tencent, business registration records showed. More than five years ago, Beijing started acquiring these stakes—called the "golden shares"—in private online media companies. The UN University's Institute for Water, Environment and Health conducted the study, which was published on Wednesday (January 11). It also suggested that action must be taken to address the problem and protect vital storage infrastructure.

As pr the study, silt accumulates in reservoirs as a result of the disruption of natural water flows and it can cause damage to hydroelectric turbines and cut power generation.

UN research warned that trapped sediment has robbed roughly 50,000 large dams worldwide of an estimated 13 per cent to 19 per cent of their combined original storage capacity, and total losses will reach 23 per cent to 28 per cent by 2050.

The United Nations University said that the dam capacity might face a global loss from the original dam capacity probably by mid-century from ~6,300 billion to ~4,650 billion m3 in 2050. The difference of—~1,650 billion m3—roughly equals the annual water use of India, China, Indonesia, France and Canada combined.

The study shows that the United Kingdom, Panama, Ireland, Japan and Seychelles will experience the highest water storage losses by 2050.

Dr Duminda Perera, who co-authored the study with UNU-INWEH Director Vladimir Smakhtin and Spencer Williams of McGill University in Montreal, said: "The decrease in available storage by 2050 in all countries and regions will challenge many aspects of national economies, including irrigation, power generation, and water supply".

Dr Perera added, "The new dams under construction or planned will not offset storage losses to sedimentation. This paper sounds an alarm on a creeping global water challenge with potentially significant development implications."

Classified documents found at Joe Biden's Delaware residence, 'cooperating fully' with review

Swedish mining company LKAB said Thursday (January 12) that they have discovered Europe's largest known deposit of rare earth elements. The mining company noted that the earth elements are essential for the manufacturing of electric vehicles. The discovery is deemed a massive boost as it is expected to cut dependence on China. The mining group said that the deposit was right next to its iron ore mine, and it contained more than one million tonnes of rare earth oxides.

In a statement, LKAB's chief executive, Jan Mostrom said: "This is the largest known deposit of rare earth elements in our part of the world."

Mostrom further mentioned in the statement that the "rare earth" could become a significant building block for producing the "critical raw materials" that are absolutely crucial to enable the green transition.

The definition of "rare earth" is—any of a group of chemically similar metallic elements comprising 17 metals: scandium, yttrium, and the fifteen lanthanides. Despite the name, they are not especially rare, but they tend to occur together in nature and are difficult to separate from one another.

Mostrom added that "we face a supply problem. Without mines, there can be no electric vehicles". But the use of "rare earth" in batteries is the subject of much debate.

But will it really help in reducing the dependence on China? Maybe not. The European Commission said in 2021 that 98 per cent of the "rare earth" used in the EU were imported from China. Brussels then urged member states to develop their extraction capacities.

The recent find in Europe is said to be the biggest in Europe. But it remains small on a global scale. Overall, it represents less than one per cent of the 120 million tonnes estimated worldwide by the US Geological Survey.
