A new study from the National Institutes of Health claimed that poor hydration among adults might result in faster ageing, a higher risk of chronic diseases. Those who do not have sufficient hydration are more likely to die younger.

The study titled—"Middle-age high normal serum sodium as a risk factor for accelerated biological aging, chronic diseases, and premature mortality" is published in the journal eBioMedicine.

Researchers have stated that they have tested a hypothesis that optimal hydration may slow down the ageing process in humans.

The results come when a rapidly ageing population poses challenges for biomedical research and public health. Experts are busy looking for mechanisms and implementing preventive measures that could slow down the ageing process.

The study author Natalia Dmitrieva said, "The results suggest that proper hydration may slow down ageing and prolong a disease-free life." Dmitrieva is a researcher in the Laboratory of Cardiovascular Regenerative Medicine at the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, which is a division of NIH.

The news release of the study mentions that lifelong water restriction shortens the lifespan and promotes degenerative changes in mice.

To conduct the study, researchers performed a large population-based observational study with a long 25-year follow-up. They acquired data from the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities study with middle-aged enrollment. The researchers said that they used serum sodium, as a proxy for hydration habits.

To estimate the relative speed of ageing, the researchers e calculated the biological age from age-dependent biomarkers. After analysing the results, they assessed the risks of chronic diseases and premature mortality.

As per the news releases, the analysis showed that middle age serum sodium greater than 142 mmol/l is associated with a 39 per cent increased risk to develop chronic diseases. Meanwhile, if it is more than 144 mmol/l, there is a 21 per cent elevated risk of premature mortality.

The researchers mentioned that intervention studies are needed to confirm the link between hydration and ageing.

Name a person who likes mosquitoes! A majority of people hate these blood-sucking menaces. Now there is one more reason to not like them as a recent report suggests that mosquitos and the pathogens they carry are loving climate change. They are becoming more prevalent and expanding their range due to climate change. An article titled—"Insecticidal activities of Streptomyces sp. KSF103 ethyl acetate extract against medically important mosquitoes and non-target organisms"— was published in Nature journal. The report sheds light on the uncontrolled spread of mosquito-borne diseases globally. Climate change, socioeconomic conditions, and the ease of world travel today are some of the reasons that are, in fact, helping the spread of mosquito-borne diseases. The article published on Monday (January 2), noted that mosquito-borne diseases are posing multiple challenges for more than four billion people in over a hundred countries. The article noted that mosquitoes are competent and epidemiologically significant species because of their anthropophilic and host-seeking behaviour. They also breed preferentially in artificial habitats within or near residential areas. The study mentioned that a potentially novel actinobacterium isolated from forest soil, Streptomyces sp. KSF103 was evaluated for its insecticidal effect against several mosquito species. Mosquito larvae and adults were exposed to various concentrations of the ethyl acetate (EA) extract for 24 hours. The study added considerable mortality was evident after the EA extract treatment for all four important vector mosquitoes. He also noted that New Delhi's relations with Beijing are "not normal", but asserted that there would be no compromise on core issues between the nations.

The minister said, "Today, the state of our relations with China is not very normal because we will never agree to any attempt to change the Line of Actual Control unilaterally."

Jaishankar is currently on a visit to Austria, which will conclude on January 3. During the presser, Jaishankar also said that India considers Austria as a "serious and consequential partner".

He said, "We view Austria as a serious and consequential partner when it comes to bilateral cooperation. You have experiences and capabilities that are relevant to India's modernisation and progress. These are guided by government policies but ultimately implemented through business transactions."

Iranian police resumed warning women over headscarves, reportedly saying that they must wear them even when they are inside a car, local media reported on Monday (January 3).

This comes as nationwide protests continue to happen over the death of Mahsa Amini, who allegedly died on September 16 last year in the custody of the morality police. The 22-year-old was said to be detained by Iranian authorities for not wearing her hijab properly.

There is a strict Iranian policy for women, which requires the to dress modestly and wear headscarves in public places. However, in the ongoing protests, women and girls have taken a centre stage, with a majority of them waving or burning their headscarves.

A senior police officer was quoted as saying in the Fars news agency that the "new stage" of the Nazer-1 programme—"surveillance" in Persian—was being rolled out "across the country by the police".

Fars added that the so-called Nazer programme, launched in 2020, concerns the "removal of the hijab in cars".

Car owners received text messages over flouting the dress code rules when the programme was launched in 2020. In case of any violation is repeated, they got a warning of "legal" action.

Traffic chaos and the closure of highways followed after heavy rain and snowfall in most of California state on Saturday (December 31) as people ushered in 2023 with an "atmospheric river storm".

News agency Reuters reported that an eyewitness shared a video, which showed vehicles partially submerged after heavy flooding in San Francisco on Saturday (December 31).

As per the report, authorities issued a flood warning, which was in place in nearby Alameda County until 3:30am (11:30GMT) on Sunday (January 1).

As reported by the news agency The Associated Press, almost two feet (0.6 meters) of snow could accumulate into early Sunday in the high Sierra Nevada.

The weather conditions posed challenges for citizens as the National Weather Service in Sacramento issued a warning about hazardous driving conditions. They also shared photos on Twitter showing traffic on snow-covered mountain passes.

Due to flooding, a section of US 101, which is one of the state's main traffic arteries, remained closed south of San Francisco, said the California Highway Patrol. Videos on Twitter showed mud-coloured water streaming along San Francisco streets.

Flash flooding continues in central/southern Sacramento County. Numerous roads are underwater in, around & downstream of Wilton along the Cosumnes River, including CA-99 between Elk Grove & Galt.
