Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Friday (December 30) that the coronavirus strategy in the nation was "optimised" to protect the lives of citizens and minimise economic costs of the pandemic.
Chinese police are apparently seeking surveillance software helps to track protests and other related activities across the country, The Guardian reported on Thursday (December 29).

According to the report, tools are placed by the Chinese surveillance manufacturer Hikvision, which is a Chinese state-owned manufacturer and supplier of video surveillance equipment for civilian and military purposes.

The Guardian has learned that the company helps police by providing details of protest activity, listing among the "alarms". The activities such as "gathering crowds to disrupt order in public places", "unlawful assembly, procession, demonstration" and threats to "petition".

The House Ways and Means Committee released redacted tax returns of former United States president Donald Trump on Friday (December 30). Six years of documents were made public after the Democratic-controlled committee obtained the returns last month as part of a probe into Trump's taxes.

The release of tax documents is a high point in the ongoing Supreme Court battle over the disclosure of the returns from 2015 to 2020. The committee was all set to release the tax returns last week. However, it was delayed because of the presence of sensitive personal information, including Social Security numbers.

As quoted by NBC News, Trump slammed the release in a statement, saying that "the Democrats should have never done it, the Supreme Court should have never approved it, and it’s going to lead to horrible things for so many people."

Notably, the presidents make their returns public as per the modern precedent but Trump claimed that the returns he fought to keep hidden "show how proudly successful I have been and how I have been able to use depreciation and various other tax deductions as an incentive for creating thousands of jobs and magnificent structures and enterprises."

In a campaign video, which was released on Friday, Trump called the decision of releasing documents an "outrageous abuse of power" and "completely unconstitutional".

Trump said, "There is no legitimate legislative purpose for their action. And if you look at what they've done, it's so sad for our country." He further added that "it's nothing but another deranged political witch hunt which has been going on from the day I came down an escalator in Trump Tower."

Last week, the committee released a report on its findings and said that the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) broke its own rules by not auditing Trump for three of the four years of his presidency.

Democrats on the committee had only a few weeks to decide how to handle the returns once they got them before Republicans retake control of the US House in January. Republicans registered a narrow margin of victory in November's midterm elections.

Benjamin Netanyahu was sworn in as the prime minister of Israel on Thursday (December 29) after the parliament voted to approve his government with 63 voting in favour of the new government and 54 against it, out of the parliament's 120 members. It will be Netanyahu's sixth term as PM as he heads the 37th government of Israel. The 73-year-old has made a comeback in politics after forming his government with the support of allies, including the Religious Zionism and Jewish Power parties after elections in November. Eli Cohen, the former Israeli intelligence minister, became the foreign minister, with former minister Amir Ohana becoming the Knesset's speaker. Ohana is the first openly gay occupant of the post. 🇮🇱🇮🇱🇮🇱 — Benjamin Netanyahu - בנימין נתניהו (@netanyahu) December 29, 2022 × 🇮🇱🇮🇱🇮🇱 pic.twitter.com/woeI4sOxBk — Benjamin Netanyahu - בנימין נתניהו (@netanyahu) December 29, 2022 × During his speech, Netanyahu presented the agenda to the Knesset plenum and outlined the objectives for his coalition: 1) stopping Iran’s nuclear programme, 2) developing state infrastructure, and 3) restoring internal security and governance to Israel. Netanyahu also said that he will work to tackle the rising cost of living and improve education. Meanwhile, Israeli left-wing and centrist activists gathered in front of the Knesset to protest against Netanyahu's new government. Today, outside the Knesset, ahead of the swearing in of the new government: In the name of Judaism - we came to defend democracy. Ukraine's president speaks to Indian PM Modi over phone, seeks help with 'peace formula'

According to the Centre for Economics and Business Research (CEBR), the world faces a recession in 2023. Higher borrowing costs, which are intended to tackle inflation, will cause a number of economies to shrink.

CEBR, one of the UK's leading economics consultancies, mentioned in its latest reports that as predicted 12 months ago, world GDP in USD terms rose above $100 trillion for the first time ever in 2022. Further, it is projected to reach $207 trillion by the end of our forecast horizon in 2037.

CEBR reports further mentioned that in its annual World Economic League Table (WELT), the global economy surpassed $100 trillion for the first time in 2022. However, the report by the British consultancy stated that the world will stall in 2023 as policymakers continue their fight against soaring prices.

Kay Daniel Neufeld, director and head of Forecasting at CEBR, said, "It's likely that the world economy will face recession next year as a result of the rises in interest rates in response to higher inflation."

Last year, the report predicted that struck more or less an optimistic tone as the vaccination campaign against COVID-19 was underway globally. It was expected that there will be normal levels of economic activity despite the Omicron wave and easing lockdown restrictions.

The report mentioned that Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February led to massive economic, food, and fuel crises, eventually rising in price globally.

The report added, "The battle against inflation is not won yet. We expect central bankers to stick to their guns in 2023 despite the economic costs. The cost of bringing inflation down to more comfortable levels is a poorer growth outlook for a number of years to come."

Kay Daniel Neufeld, director and head of Forecasting at CEBR, said, "It's likely that the world economy will face recession next year as a result of the rises in interest rates in response to higher inflation." Last year, the report predicted that struck more or less an optimistic tone as the vaccination campaign against COVID-19 was underway globally. It was expected that there will be normal levels of economic activity despite the Omicron wave and easing lockdown restrictions. The report mentioned that Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February led to massive economic, food, and fuel crises, eventually rising in price globally.
