Our planet is actually shaking, and it is not because of earthquakes. A new study sheds light on how climate change is leading to the generation of seismic waves, similar to the tremors felt during quakes.

The ocean waves apply forces to the sea floor below and generate seismic waves as they rise and fall, said the study, titled "Increasing ocean wave energy observed in Earth's seismic wavefield since the late 20th century". It was published in the journal Nature Communications on Nov 1.

The study said that these seismic waves are so intense and extensive that seismographs, which are used to monitor and analyse earthquakes, detect them as a constant thrum.

Scientists said in the study that they used data from 52 globally distributed seismographs to analyse the "vertical component primary microseism wavefield" in the 14–20s period between the late 1980s and Aug 2022.

As per the study, the wave signal has been getting more intense in recent decades, which reflects increasingly stormy seas and higher ocean swell.

"This signal is principally composed of Rayleigh waves generated by ocean wave seafloor tractions at less than several hundred meters depth, and is thus a proxy for near-coastal swell activity," the study noted.

The study reflects how these global statistics, together with other ocean, satellite, and regional seismic studies, demonstrate a decades-long rise in wave energy, which corresponds with increased storminess caused by rising global temperatures.

The study said that microseism intensity was measured at 52 seismograph locations around the world with extended histories of continuous recording dating back to the late 1980s. The authors found that 41 (79%) of these stations saw quite significant and progressive energy increases over the decades.

According to the findings, globally averaged ocean wave energy has increased at a median rate of 0.27% each year since the late twentieth century. However, the global average annual growth in the rate has been 0.35% since 2000.

Israel will have "overall security responsibility" in Gaza for an "indefinite period" after the war, said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during an interview that aired on ABC News on Monday (Nov 6).

Netanyahu has resisted calls for a ceasefire as he says there would be no pause in the ongoing war against Hamas which started after the militant group launched an attack on Oct 7. As per Israeli authorities, Hamas killed 1,400 people and took over 200 back into Gaza as hostages.

On the same day, Israel waged war, bombarding the narrow Gaza Strip and also carrying out incursions, with the Hamas-run health ministry claiming that the death toll in Gaza has surpassed 10,000 people - more than 4,000 of them being children.

What about the 'tactical pauses'?

Netanyahu's remarks came after the White House said that US President Joe Biden and Israeli PM on Monday discussed the potential for "tactical pauses" during the war for humanitarian reasons and possible hostage releases. It was just talks, there were no announcements for agreements.

Netanyahu said, "There will be no ceasefire, general ceasefire, in Gaza, without the release of our hostages."

"As far as tactical, little pauses -- an hour here, an hour there -- we've had them before. I suppose we'll check the circumstances in order to enable goods -- humanitarian goods -- to come in or our hostages, individual hostages, to leave," he added.

Netanyahu says Israel will take control of Gaza’s ‘overall security’ after war

The Hubble Space Telescope of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has captured a breathtaking image of the planet Jupiter. The image is in a colour composite of ultraviolet wavelengths.

Jupiter and the Sun are on opposite sides of the sky. This view of the planet includes the iconic and massive storm called the "Great Red Spot". The image has been released to honour the opposition.

Though the storm appears red to the naked eye, it appears deeper in this UV image because high-altitude haze particles absorb light at these wavelengths.

The reddish, wavy polar hazes absorb slightly less of this light because of changes in particle size, content, or altitude.

Hidden ocean the source of CO2 on Jupiter's Moon

Last month, a report said that carbon dioxide detected on Jupiter's moon Europa comes from the vast ocean beneath its icy shell. The research was done using the James Webb Space Telescope data. This will potentially bolster hopes that the hidden water could harbour life.

Scientists are confident there is a huge ocean of saltwater kilometres below Europa's ice-covered surface, making the moon a prime candidate for hosting extra-terrestrial life in our Solar System.

However, determining whether this concealed ocean has the right chemical elements to support life has been difficult.

Former Guinean dictator Moussa Dadis Camara was on Saturday (Nov 4) taken away from prison by a heavily armed commando during an operation. The incident sparked heavy fire in the centre of the Guinean capital Conakry, with military vehicles and special forces seen roaming the streets.

"I learned that there was an escape from the civil prison of Conakry, which concerned my client Moussa Dadis Camara," his lawyer Jocamey Haba told AFP, raising the possibility that the ex-leader was taken against his will.

Camara has been on trial since last year, accused of orchestrating a stadium massacre and mass rape by Guinean security forces in which 150 people were killed during a pro-democracy rally on Sep 28, 2009.

Local residents told news agencies that the sound of gunfire rattled the administrative centre, the Kaloum peninsula. The witnesses said that the security forces blocked off the area.

Chinese President Xi Jinping spoke virtually to German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Friday (Nov 3), urging Europe to help mediate conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza. Xi also said that the security of a nation cannot be ensured at the cost of others.

The state news agency Xinhua reported that Xi said in the video conference: "A fundamental resolution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and the Ukraine crisis requires profound reflection on security issues… and a push for a balanced, effective and sustained security framework."

"Squeezing the security space of other countries, supporting one side while ignoring the legitimate demands of the other side will only lead to regional imbalance and escalation of conflicts. China and Europe should devote [effort] to mediate conflicts and ease tensions," he added.

He also noted that big international risks such as the sluggish economic recovery and the revival of a cold-war mentality made it necessary for China and Germany to jointly defend global order and multilateralism.

Chinese President Xi Jinping spoke virtually to German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Friday (Nov 3), urging Europe to help mediate conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza. Xi also said that the security of a nation cannot be ensured at the cost of others. The state news agency Xinhua reported that Xi said in the video conference: "A fundamental resolution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and the Ukraine crisis requires profound reflection on security issues… and a push for a balanced, effective and sustained security framework." "Squeezing the security space of other countries, supporting one side while ignoring the legitimate demands of the other side will only lead to regional imbalance and escalation of conflicts. China and Europe should devote [effort] to mediate conflicts and ease tensions," he added. He also noted that big international risks such as the sluggish economic recovery and the revival of a cold-war mentality made it necessary for China and Germany to jointly defend global order and multilateralism. Top officials from China and the United States held "constructive and candid" talks on a range of maritime issues in Beijing, the State Department said Friday (Nov 3).

This can be seen as another step in the modest process to thaw relations between the two nations ahead of a meeting between Chinese leader Xi Jinping and US President Joe Biden this month in San Francisco.

The statement further added that the US "underscored concerns" with Beijing's "dangerous and unlawful actions in the South China Sea".

The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic may have subsided, as the reported cases across the world are now lesser than what they used to be in 2020 and 2021, by its indirect impact on people is still very much evident.

A new research, published in The Lancet Healthy Longevity, claimed to have found evidence which suggests a decline in brain health of those in or over 50s more rapidly during the pandemic.

The major research has linked the pandemic to sustained cognitive decline as it claimed that such deterioration can be seen in those who even didn't have Covid.

Researchers analysed the results they revived from computerised brain function tests from more than 3,000 participants of the online PROTECT study. All the respondents were based in the United Kingdom and were aged between 50 and 90.

The Protect study was launched in 2014 to understand the details of brain function in the elderly for 25 years.

The study suggests that during the first year of the Covid pandemic between March 2020 and February 2021, cognitive function and working memory in older adults declined faster.

This happened even if they hadn't contracted the virus, and it continued in the next year as well, that is 2022. This trend suggests that the brain's health was impacted months after the initial lockdowns.

The researchers wrote in the journal, "We found that people aged 50 years and older in the UK had accelerated decline in executive function and working memory during the first year of the Covid-19 pandemic, during which the UK was subjected to three societal lockdowns for a total period of six months."

"Notably, however, this worsening in working memory persisted in the second year of the pandemic, after the social restrictions had eased. The scale of change is also of note, with all groups – the whole cohort and the individual subgroups – showing more than a 50% greater decline in working memory and executive function," they added.

The study, led by the University of Exeter and King's College London, stated that several factors resulted in a decline in cognition.

The factors could have been a rise in loneliness and depression, a reduction in exercise in lockdown, alcohol intake, and more. The ill effects of Covid could also be the reason as several studies have found that the deadly virus has a direct impact as well.

As quoted by The Guardian, Anne Corbett, who is a professor in dementia research and the lead at Exeter for the Protect study, said that the findings of the study "raises the important question of whether people are at a potentially higher risk of cognitive decline, which can lead to dementia".

Corbett added: "Our findings also highlight the need for policymakers to consider the wider health impacts of restrictions like lockdowns when planning for a future pandemic response."

The attack happened at about 8:30 p.m. (1930 GMT) on Monday, at Gurokayeya village, Gaidam local government in Yobe State, the state's police spokesperson Abdulkarim Dungus said.

He said gunmen opened fire on villagers, killing at least 17 people and that on Tuesday a land mine exploded, killing at least 20 villagers who were returning from burying victims of the previous attack.

The Islamist group has been killing and abducting villagers in Borno state, a hotbed for militancy that has been the epicentre of a 14-year war on insurgency in Nigeria.

President Bola Tinubu and his cabinet on Monday approved $2.8 billion supplementary budget to fund "urgent issues" including defence and security.

Tinubu, preoccupied with the economy, has yet to disclose how he would tackle insurgency in the north and widespread insecurity in other parts of the country.

The Yobe community had been at peace for over a year before this attack, residents said. The last time a bomb exploded in Yobe state was in April 2022.

Lawan Ahmed, a resident, told Reuters the militants shot at villagers sporadically from motorbikes, killing about 18 people on Monday.

Ahmed added that the same insurgents on Tuesday attempted to eliminate those who had gone to the burial on Monday, killing more than 20 people.
