Know About India’s ‘Pralay’ Missile, Which is Compared with Russia’s ‘Iskander’

India test-fired its surface-to-surface short-range ballistic missile (SRBM) ‘Pralay’.

It is capable of striking enemy targets within 350-500km distance. It has a payload capacity of 500-1,000kg.

‘Pralay’ has been developed for deployment along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and the Line of Control (LoC).

It can be compared with Russia’s ‘Iskander’ and China’s ‘Dong Feng 12’.

The ‘Pralay’ missile incorporates a jet vane control (JVS) system for thrust vector control. It means that it may undertake evasive manoeuvres in terminal flight.

Reports mentioned that the missile navigates to its target using inertial guidance.

A northwest Arkansas man, accused of keeping a five-year-old girl in a secret compartment in his closet, has been arrested. The arrest was made after the police found the child in the closet which was nailed shut. The authorities said that police officers were there to assist the state officials who were trying to take custody of the minor.

Last week on Thursday, police officers paid a visit to the man's house so that they could help DHS take custody of the girl. But he denied that she was there.

The man, identified as John Thompson and hailing from Tontitown, later agreed to show where the girl was when more police officers arrived.

When dinosaurs roamed the Earth, the planet looked different as there were supercontinents. The Pangea, Gondwana, and Pannotia were the three most recent supercontinents. A supercontinent is defined as a single landmass that contains at least 75 per cent of all land on Earth. Geologists believe that more supercontinents existed before these three - Nuna (or Columbia), Rodinia, and Ur.

A new study says that the continent of Argoland, which apparently vanished after splitting from Australia 155 million years ago, has finally been discovered. It formerly bordered northeastern Australia around 155 million years ago, during the Jurassic period.

When the division of the continent happens, it is typically marked by ancient fossils, minerals, and mountain ranges. However, scientists have been able to find out where Argoland had ended up.

This is a significant development as scientists for decades have been puzzled by the disappearance of Argoland, which is a massive 3,000-mile-long island.

The scientists are sure that it existed because of the 'void', which is also known as the Argo Abyssal Plain. It is left behind in the form of a basin hidden deep under the ocean.

The study said that the ruins which were scattered of this ancient landmass are buried beneath parts of Southwest Asian nations like Indonesia and Myanmar.

Eldert Advokaat and Douwe van Hinsbergen, the geologists at the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands, said that Argoland's crust began to splinter into what they call an "Argopelago" of smaller islands as early as 300 million years ago, when Antarctica, South America, Africa, Australia, and India were all part of a supercontinent Gondwana.

In the study published this month in Gondwana Research, the authors have said that they now "identified the Gondwana-derived blocks and mega-units of Southwest Borneo, Greater Paternoster, East Java, South Sulawesi, West Burma, and Mount Victoria Land as fragments that collectively may represent fragments of Argoland".

Former United States president Donald Trump has claimed that Imran Khan, the ex-prime minister of Pakistan, was celebrating the death of Iranian military commander Qasem Soleimani in 2020. Trump's remarks came this week when he was addressing a campaign rally in Houston, Texas.

Soleimani was Iran's most powerful military commander who led Iranian military operations in West Asia as head of Iran's elite Quds Force.

He was killed by a US air strike just a few days before Trump left the White House for the current president Joe Biden.

A report by Pakistan-based media outlet DAWN mentioned that many Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) followers in Houston favour Trump because they believe the Biden administration is antagonistic to Khan.

Without specifying when or where he had this conversation with Khan, who is serving his time in prison, the former US president described the discussion he claimed to have had with Khan.

He recalled: "They had a Pakistan Khan, he was a great cricket player, and he became the head of Pakistan. He said it was the biggest moment of my (Imran's) life."

India's capital New Delhi has been enveloped by thick smog as air pollution worsened, which led to an increase in the concentrations of fine particles in the air above acceptable limits. But is air pollution in Delhi fuelled by the absence of Western disturbances? The latest report provides answers.

For many years, New Delhi has been ranked as one of the most polluted cities in the world as winter approaches the region. With the end of the Monsoon and the arrival of the Autumn season, winds in the northwest region slow down and temperatures begin to fall. The conditions become favourable for capturing contaminants from the environment.

Not just that, construction dust, pollution, factories, and stubble burning are some of the sources of the smog.

However, a recent report by Climate Trends, an environment NGO, suggests that stubble-burning incidences in the neighbouring agrarian states of Haryana and Punjab have decreased by 38.04 per cent and 47.8 per cent, respectively. As a result, the weight of high air pollution levels falls on local emissions and weather conditions.

As quoted by the report, Mahesh Palawat, the Vice President of Meteorology and Climate Change, at Skymet Weather, said: "Weather conditions are presently very conducive for the spike in air pollution. Temperatures have also started coming down, leading to the formation of mist and haze during the morning hours."

Palawat added, "The mist contains water vapours where the pollutants get deposited and remain suspended near the Earth's surface. Further, the absence of any weather activity, as well as light winds, are not letting pollutants move away from Delhi-NCR."

Experts have said that the air in the planetary boundary layer (the lowest section of the atmosphere) is thinner during the winter because the cooler air near the Earth's surface is dense.

The cooler air is confined beneath the heated air above, forming a kind of atmospheric 'lid'. This is called the winter inversion. The contaminants discharged do not have enough space to disperse in the atmosphere as the vertical mixing of air occurs solely inside this layer.

Meteorologists have issued a warning that there will be more bad air quality days as minimum temperatures fall further in the season.

Palawa added, "The more the minimum temperatures dip, the thicker will be the inversion layer. And the thicker the inversion layer, it would be more difficult for sun rays or winds to penetrate through this layer and disperse the pollution level."

In the last few years, the world has witnessed persistent changes in the weather patterns caused by climate change. To understand how it is important to know about the Western Disturbance (WD) and the process of bringing winter rains over Northwest India.

WD is an extratropical cyclone that forms in the Mediterranean region and provides heavy winter rain to the northwestern sections of the Indian subcontinent. It also extends as far east as northern Bangladesh and south-eastern Nepal.

But there have been discrepancies in the Western Disturbances, especially this year as the experts have not seen any after Oct 12.

Less WDs lead to lesser weather activity, which means the wind speed continues to be light and not good enough to push away the pollutants.

"For dispersion of pollution, cities need to cut down on emissions across sectors and at source. However, weather conditions in the form of rains would bring some immediate relief but with increasing climate change, these systems have also become inconsistent," the Climate Trends report noted.

Follow These 'Life’s Essential 8' & Slow Ageing By 6 Years

Researchers at Columbia University said in a report that the eight behaviours advocated by the American Heart Association, called ‘Life’s Essential 8’, may significantly delay biological ageing.

The research recommends that one should eat a nutrient-rich diet and aim for an overall healthy eating pattern that includes whole foods, lots of fruits and vegetables, lean protein, nuts, seeds, and cooking in non-tropical oils such as olive and canola.

The research based on analysis of more than 6,500 adults noted that adults should get 2½ hours of moderate or 75 minutes of vigorous physical activity per week.

As per the research, the use of inhaled nicotine delivery products, which includes traditional cigarettes, e-cigarettes and vaping, is the leading cause of preventable deaths in the US.

For a long life, good and healthy sleep is a must. It promotes healing, improves brain function and reduces the risk of chronic diseases. As per the research, most adults need 7-9 hours of sleep each night.

Maintaining a healthy weight has many benefits and is crucial for a long life.

The research suggests that high levels of non-HDL, or ‘bad’, cholesterol can lead to heart disease.

Management of blood sugar is vital and it must include testing. Monitoring haemoglobin A1c can better reflect long-term control in people with diabetes or prediabetes.

The research said that keeping blood pressure within acceptable range can keep you healthier longer.

5 Herbs For Steam Inhalation To Treat Colds And Sinuses

The process of steam inhalation implies breathing in steam to loosen the mucus and help you breathe better. People often do it to treat a cold or a sinus infection. It is a common non-pharmacologic treatment to help clear mucus.

Here are some of the most beneficial herbs to boost the process of steam inhalation:

Thyme: It has antibacterial properties and is also an expectorant (helps loosen mucus).

Mint: Some use mint leaves during steam therapy as it is antibacterial. However, avoid peppermint essential oil as it is very strong.

Eucalyptus: It helps to loosen mucus, however, experts suggest using it in small doses because it can be overpowering.

Basil: It is a decongestant and known for its natural antiseptic and antibacterial properties.

Rosemary: This herb is also used in steam therapy as it has antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties.

Tens of thousands of Roman coins, what appear to be spoils of war, have been discovered in the sea near the northeast coast of Sardinia, the Italian Ministry of Culture said on Saturday (Nov 4). The ministry said that the coins date from the early 4th century AD and are mainly a bronze follis type made in the Roman tradition.

The ministry contacted authorities from the Superintendency of Archaeology and the Carabineros after the divers found the treasure among sea grass along the Mediterranean island's north-east coast. Divers from an art protection team and the ministry's undersea archaeology department were dispatched to investigate.

As reported by Heritage Daily, estimates say that the bronze coins are between 30,000 and 50,000, which are said to be "in an exceptional and rare state of conservation". The estimation is based on the total weight of the find.

As per the report, a chronological analysis places the timeline of the coins between AD 324 (coinage of Licinius), and AD 340 (coinage of Constantine the Great).

As quoted, the ministry explained: "The restoration and conservation operations of the coins and materials found will allow us to expand and deepen our knowledge of the context of the finds from which a lot of information can still be extracted."

Luigi La Rocca, who is the head of the Italian Directorate of Archaeology, said: "The treasure represents one of the most important numismatic discoveries in recent years and highlights once again the richness and importance of the archaeological heritage that hides in the depths of our seas."

La Rocca also hailed the find as one of the most significant coin discoveries in recent times. He believes it demonstrates the wealth and significance of the archaeological heritage buried beneath the seafloor.

The ministry added the treasure trove was far bigger than the cache found in 2013 in the United Kingdom when 22,888 similar coins were discovered near the site of a Roman fort in the southwest county of Devon.

Experts have finally found the reason behind the mysterious mass deaths of African elephants. In a new report, scientists have said that the outbreaks could be more likely due to conditions created by global warming and the climate crisis.

In 2020, the sudden deaths of African elephants in Botswana and Zimbabwe in 2020 led to considerable public interest and speculation.

In the early phase of the investigation, poaching and malicious poisoning were ruled out and other potential causes included environmental intoxication, infectious diseases, and increased habitat stress due to ongoing drought.

As quoted by CNN, Dr Chris Foggin, who is a veterinarian at Victoria Falls Wildlife Trust in Zimbabwe, said: "They died over a very narrow window. That's one of the most enigmatic parts of the whole puzzle."

"That many animals dying quite close together but not right next to each other over such a narrow space of time. It's really to my mind, rather unique, certainly in this part of the world," added Foggin, who is also the coauthor of the study on the cause of the deaths.

The elephants died as food and water resources declined during the dry season, forcing them to travel greater distances to find water and feed. Later, it was established that a bacterial infection killed the elephants. The conclusion was based on the research on samples taken from 15 of the animals that died in Zimbabwe.

The analysis, published in the journal Nature Communications on Oct 25, revealed all the details. The study, titled "Pasteurella sp. associated with fatal septicaemia in six African elephants", showed evidence of infection by a little-known bacterium called Bisgaard taxon 45 that caused septicemia, or blood poisoning.

"We analyse elephant carcasses and environmental samples and fail to find evidence of cyanobacterial or other intoxication. Post-mortem and histological findings suggest a bacterial septicaemia similar to haemorrhagic septicaemia caused by P. multocida," the study said.

The study mentioned that African elephants (Loxodonta africana) are a flagship species threatened by poaching and habitat destruction. Elephant numbers have dropped by 144,000 between 2007 and 2014, to 350,000, with continuous losses projected at 8% per year, according to the IUCN Red List.

Scientists have reconstructed the mitochondrial genome of extinct woolly rhinoceros from DNA they extracted from the fossilised faeces of the cave hyenas.

The world knows that there are two types of Ice Age woolly rhinoceros known to science: Siberian and European. In order to learn more about the European species, the researchers have used an odd substance - the poop of an ancient hyena.

The study, titled "Woolly-rhino genome emerges from cave hyena’s fossilized poo", published on Nov 1 noted the analysis which shows that the now-extinct beast split into two populations almost half a million years ago.

To understand this process, it is important to note that in the distant past, hyenas were natural predators of the European woolly rhinoceros.

The researchers, hence, studied their fossilised faeces in a few museum collections. The study mentioned that the samples came from caves in Germany's Lone Valley.

As per the authors, the coprolites were in soil that dates to the Middle Paleolithic era — 300,000 to 30,000 years ago.

As per the study, the genomic analysis reveals information about the physical traits, evolution, and behaviour of these massive Ice Age herbivores.

The researchers discovered genes that code for hair growth, fat accumulation, and the ability to withstand low temperatures.

The genomes of both species of woolly rhino were then compared. Between 2.5 million and 150,000 years ago, the European rhino started to divide.

This contradicts prior theories that the woolly rhino spread into Western Europe during cold winters in the Late Pleistocene epoch.

As quoted by the Science Alert, the researchers write in their paper, "The mitogenome assemblies produced here are the first mitogenomic records of European woolly rhinoceros and are thus an important resource to help resolve the phylogeography of this iconic Pleistocene megafauna species."

"The fact that these were retrieved with relative ease from a coprolite of another species (i.e. no remain associated directly to woolly rhinoceros was needed) stresses the value of obtaining genomic data from a wide range of materials," they added.

This study can be an example of the possibility of using fossilised faeces to study other extinct animals.
