Scientists are still probing Enceladus, Saturn's ocean moon, as they think there's more to what we already know on planet Earth. They are trying to find life on another planet, and in the past decade, the search and research have picked pace, with increased attention on Enceladus.

So far, what we know about Enceladus is that it's an ice-covered ocean. The information comes from the Cassini mission, a space-research mission by NASA, the European Space Agency, and the Italian Space Agency to study Saturn and its system, including its rings and natural satellites.

The mission ended its exploration of the Saturn system in 2017. However, scientists are still working through its data to find out more. Cassini discovered geyser-like plumes of water erupting through Enceladus' icy shell during its mission.

It performed a close-proximity flyby in 2008 and analysed the plumes with its Cosmic Dust Analyzer (CDA), which showed that the water in the plumes contained a surprising mix of volatiles, including carbon dioxide, water vapour, and carbon monoxide.

The mission also found trace amounts of molecular nitrogen, simple hydrocarbons, and complex organic chemicals. Scientists are still analysing data from Cassini, which was destroyed in Saturn's atmosphere.

A new paper, titled "Observations of Elemental Composition of Enceladus Consistent with Generalized Models of Theoretical Ecosystems", has unveiled new findings.

For the latest finding, the researchers have used ecological and metabolic theory and modelling to understand how ammonia and inorganic phosphorous in Enceladus' ocean could make the moon favourable for life.

The authors explain: "Apart from speculating about threshold concentrations of bioactive compounds to support ecosystems, metabolic and ecological theory can provide a powerful interpretative lens to assess whether extraterrestrial environments are compatible with living ecosystems."

The analysis could be related to the Redfield ratio which is the consistent atomic ratio of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus found in marine phytoplankton and throughout the deep oceans.

The theory is given by American oceanographer Alfred Redfield, who said in his study in 1934 that the ratio of carbon to nitrogen to phosphorous (C:N:P) was remarkably consistent across ocean biomass at 106:16:1.

The authors of the new paper say: "Because of this seeming ubiquity, the Redfield ratio has been considered a target signature for astrobiological life detection, especially on ocean worlds such as Europa and Enceladus."

The study has noted that the analysis of Cassini's data from Enceladus' plumes shows a high level of inorganic phosphate in the ocean.

The authors have said that these reports of "phosphorus follow on the tails of previous work identifying numerous elemental constituents of terrestrial life (C, N, H, O) from the Enceladus plume".

Hence, Enceladus' ocean has a rich chemistry, and many chemicals reflect life's chemical makeup.

Enceladus: Does Saturn's ocean moon hold chemicals necessary for life?

The Philippines accused the Chinese coast guard Friday of "dangerous harassment" of Filipino boats in the disputed South China Sea, including firing a water cannon.

The latest incident near Second Thomas Shoal in the Spratly Islands comes nearly three weeks after two collisions between Chinese and Philippine vessels during a resupply mission to the same tiny garrison.

The countries, which have a long history of maritime disputes in the hotly contested waters, traded blame for those incidents.

On Friday, Manila said the Chinese coast guard and other vessels "recklessly harassed, blocked, executed dangerous maneuvers" as they tried to "illegally impede or obstruct a routine resupply" of Filipino troops at the outpost.

The Philippines' National Task Force for the West Philippine Sea said in a statement a Chinese coast guard vessel had also fired a water cannon against a Philippine boat.

The task force said the Philippine embassy in Beijing lodged a protest with the Chinese foreign ministry over the incident.

But China said it "took control measures" against two Philippine transport ships and three coast guard vessels it insisted were in Chinese waters.

"The Philippines' actions infringe on China's territorial sovereignty," China Coast Guard spokesperson Gan Yu said.

"We urge the Philippines to immediately stop its infringing actions."

A handful of Filipino troops are stationed on the crumbling BRP Sierra Madre, which the Philippine Navy grounded on the reef in 1999 to check China's advance in the waters.

The troops depend on the resupply missions for their survival.

China claims almost the entire South China Sea, through which trillions of dollars in trade passes annually, and has ignored a 2016 international ruling that its assertion has no legal basis.

Over the past decade or so, Beijing has deployed vessels to patrol the waters, swarm reefs and built artificial islands that it has militarised to reinforce its stance.

Second Thomas Shoal is about 200 kilometres (124 miles) from the western Philippine island of Palawan, and more than 1,000 kilometres from China's nearest major landmass, Hainan island.

The Marcos administration has publicly criticised Chinese actions in the South China Sea, publishing photos and videos to support its claims of Chinese harassment and the blocking of its vessels.

Beijing has released its own images of the incidents.

Scientists have announced the birth of a monkey chimera with two sets of DNA. Green shiny eyes and glowing yellow fingertips are some of the observed features. This primate, created by scientists in China, has something more interesting beneath the skin and its genes.

Details of the research were published on Thursday (Nov 9) in the scientific journal Cell, titled "Live birth of chimeric monkey with high contribution from embryonic stem cells". The research aims to refine the process in primates in order to better study treatments for neurodegenerative diseases.

The monkey, which was made in a lab, lived for 10 days but eventually was euthanised. It was made by combining stem cells from a cynomolgus monkey with a genetically distinct embryo from the same monkey species.

A cynomolgus monkey is often known as a crab-eating or long-tailed macaque. It is a cercopithecine primate which is native to Southeast Asia. It is a species of macaque that has a long history alongside humans.

The experiment created a living and breathing long-tailed macaque from the pluripotent stem cells of two genetically different fertilised eggs from the same monkey species.

As quoted by CNN, The study coauthor Miguel Esteban, who is the principal investigator at the Guangzhou Institute of Biomedicine and Health, Chinese Academy of Sciences, said: "It is encouraging that our live birth monkey chimera had a big contribution (of stem cells) to the brain, suggesting that indeed this approach should be valuable for modeling neurodegenerative diseases."

He also said, "Monkey chimera also have potential enormous value for species conservation if they could be achieved between two types of nonhuman primate species, one of which is endangered."

"If there is a contribution of the donor cells from the endangered species to the germ line, one could envisage that through breeding animals of these species could be produced," he added.

According to researchers in China and the UK, this is not the world's first living monkey created through the fusion of numerous fertilised eggs. But it is the most mixed, or chimeric, of them all.

Chimeric mice were developed in the 1960s and are now widely employed in scientific research.

What exactly is a chimera?

The Chimera (also written as Chimaera or Chimæra) was a monstrous fire-breathing hybrid creature from Lycia and Asia Minor, as per Greek mythology.

The creature is believed to be composed of different animal parts and is usually depicted as a lion, with the head of a goat on its back. It has a tail that is said to be ending with a snake's head.

According to science, an animal 'chimera' is a single organism which is made up of cells that come from more than just two parents.

Israel has asked international outlets to explain how some of their photojournalists were present at the scene on Oct 7 when Hamas launched a surprise attack, which according to Israeli authorities killed more than 1,400 people. The Israeli Prime Minister's Office said that Gaza-based photojournalists are employed by top media outlets.

This came after pro-Israel watchdog group Honest Reporting published a report on Wednesday, revealing that photographers associated with news outlets, including The Associated Press, Reuters, The New York Times, and CNN, provided images which were apparently taken when the Oct 7 attack was ongoing.

In a statement, Israeli government spokesperson Nitzan Chen said that Israel was demanding explanations regarding the HonestReporting article, saying what the report had described "crosses every red line, professional and moral".

During the debate, Ramaswamy and Haley had several fierce verbal exchanges.

Haley called him "scum" during an intense moment when Ramaswamy mentioned former United Nations Ambassador Haley's daughter while discussing banning the Chinese-owned video-sharing app TikTok.

Israel Knesset late Wednesday (Nov 8) passed an amendment to counter-terrorism law to criminalise those who consume pro-Hamas publications, local media reports said.

The Israeli lawmakers voted to amend the counterterrorism law of the nation to make it a criminal offence to "consume terrorist materials".

As per the reports, the bill bars people from the "systematic and continuous consumption of publications of a terrorist organisation under circumstances that indicate identification with the terrorist organisation".

Knesset approved the bill by a 13-4 majority for a temporary two-year measure, with an option of further expansion. The criminal offence carries a maximum penalty of one year in prison.

The amendment identifies the Palestinian group Hamas and the ISIL (ISIS) group as the "terrorist" organisations to which the offence applies.

It allows the justice minister to add more organisations to the list. However, it should be in agreement with the Ministry of Defence and parliament's Constitution, Law, and Justice Committee must approve it.

As quoted by Al-Jazeera, Adalah, the Legal Centre for Arab Minority Rights in Israel, said: "This law is one of the most intrusive and draconian legislative measures ever passed by the Israeli Knesset since it makes thoughts subject to criminal punishment."

They also issued a warning, stating that the amendment would criminalise "even passive social media use" crackdown on Palestinian citizens of Israel on free speech.

The amendment came as the Israeli Army continued relentless air and ground attacks on the Gaza Strip, which started after a cross-border attack by Hamas on Oct 7.

A report by the US Geological Survey (USGS) revealed that around 400 earthquakes have been recorded under Mount St Helens since mid-July this year.

The latest quakes are the longest series of tremors since the volcano's last eruption ended in 2008. However, there are no indications of an imminent eruption.

In an update posted to its website, the USGS said: "Mount St Helens has had a slight uptick in earthquakes, have you noticed? Most are small (less than M1.0) & not felt at the surface."

"No cause for concern right now - no significant changes in ground deformation or gases. Volcano remains at normal (green) background levels," it added.

The USGS added that since mid-July this year, over 400 EQs have been located by the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network (PNSN), which monitors earthquakes and volcanoes.

In 1980, 57 people were killed when Mount St Helens erupted on May 18 in southwest Washington state. When a 5.1 earthquake hit, the north flank of the volcano collapsed. It blasted more than 1,300 feet off the top and rained volcanic ash for miles around. The eruption led to the largest landslide in recorded history.

Most of the quakes over a three-month span beginning in mid-July were less than magnitude 1.0, USGS recently reported, adding that the quakes were apparently too small to be felt at the surface.

Meanwhile, Wes Thelen, who is a volcano seismologist with the agency's Cascade Volcano Observatory told The Columbian newspaper that small magnitude earthquakes detected with sensitive equipment signal a volcano is "recharging" as magma flows through chambers and cracks deep underground.

Former British prime minister Boris Johnson has said the Conservatives are "drifting to defeat" under Rishi Sunak administration. He also claimed that the current prime minister is a "stooge" in the plot by Dominic Cummings.

His remarks came during a series of interviews with former cabinet minister Nadine Dorries for her new book, titled, The Plot: the Political Assassination of Boris Johnson, which was released on Thursday.

Johnson said that UK PM Sunak was offering voters "nothing to rally behind" and added that the current prime minister needs to offer a "positive agenda for change".

He told Dorries: "I heard that Cummings has said he started to plot to get rid of me in January 2020. The plot was always to get Rishi in. I just couldn't see it at the time. It's like this Manchurian candidate, their stooge."

UK PM Rishi Sunak Aims To Pass These Laws Before Next Election

The government intends to introduce five pieces of legislation aimed at toughening sentencing and deterring crime.

The Tobacco and Vapes Bill means anyone who was born on or after Jan 1, 2009, will never be allowed to legally buy cigarettes.

The Offshore Petroleum Licencing Bill will establish annual licencing rounds for North Sea oil and gas exploration.

The government will introduce the Digital Markets, Competition, and Consumers Bill, which will give ministers new tools to combat "drip pricing". It basically occurs when businesses promote a low price online before adding additional fees.

The Leasehold and Freehold Bill means all new houses in England and Wales will be exempt from having to pay these extra costs, which owners of some properties pay rent to a freeholder.

The government intends to establish an independent football regulator who will be in charge of investigating club owners and their financial resources.
