Some think starfish are cute, and some say they are scary. To some, these star-shaped echinoderms which belong to the class Asteroidea, are creepy. Now, the level of creepiness may increase further as this new study about this sea creature says that the entire body of a starfish is essentially one big head, and they don't have the architecture for an actual body.

Known facts about starfish say that they can regenerate their arms, they have no brain or blood, they wear tough, leathery skin, and they have eyes.

A team led by biologists Laurent Formery and Chris Lowe of Stanford University said that starfish are just mobile heads that manage the ability to move from one place to another, basically acrawl.

Laurent Formery, lead author and postdoc in the labs of Christopher Lowe at the Stanford School of Humanities and Sciences and Daniel S Rokhsar at the University of California, Berkeley, said: "The answer is much more complicated than we expected. It is just weird, and most likely the evolution of the group was even more complicated than this."

Not just starfish, sea urchins, sand dollars, sea cucumbers also echinoderms. When we look at them in oceans or fish aquariums, they may come across as normal as oceans are filled with such unusual creatures, but starfish are very different and keep intriguing scientists.

The paper, titled "Molecular evidence of anteroposterior patterning in adult echinoderms", was published on Nov 1 in Nature.

As quoted by Study Finds, Lowe, also a researcher at Hopkins Marine Station, said that "this has been a zoological mystery for centuries. How can you go from a bilateral body plan to a pentaradial plan, and how can you compare any part of the starfish to our own body plan?"

To find more details, a new Stanford study used genetic and molecular tools to map out the body regions of starfish.

They created a 3D atlas of their gene expression so that they get answers about the sea stars.

The researchers found that the "head" of a starfish is not in any one place. In fact, the headlike regions are scattered everywhere, with some in the centre, and some in the centre of each limb of its body.

As quoted by Science Alert, biologist Jeff Thompson of the University of Southampton in the UK, said: "How the different body parts of the echinoderms relate to those we see in other animal groups has been a mystery to scientists for as long as we've been studying them."

"In their bilateral relatives, the body is divided into a head, trunk, and tail. But just looking at a starfish, it's impossible to see how these sections relate to the bodies of bilateral animals," Thompson added.

The study noted: "We investigated the expression of a suite of conserved transcription factors with well-established roles in the establishment of anteroposterior polarity in deuterostomes and other bilaterians using RNA tomography and in situ hybridization in the sea star Patiria miniata."

It added, "The relative spatial expression of these markers in P. miniata ambulacral ectoderm shows similarity with other deuterostomes, with the midline of each ray representing the most anterior territory and the most lateral parts exhibiting a more posterior identity."

Researchers have come up with a theory about the mysterious, dense, continent-sized blobs of material, which are buried deep under Earth's mantle some 2,900 kilometres down.

If this hypothesis is correct or in the right direction, the scientists could solve a mystery that intrigued scientists for more than a decade as this research tells a lot about the two giant blobs buried deep inside Earth's mantle — beneath Africa and the Pacific Ocean.

In a study published on Wednesday (Nov 1) in the journal Nature, researchers have said that the blobs may be remnants of a planet which slammed into Earth in the early solar system.

When the so-called planet smacked into the Earth, it produced a shower of debris that formed the Moon.

The smashing of the planet into Earth is an old theory, as previous studies have mentioned that planet-sized object Theia crashed into Earth around 4.5 billion years ago.

Some of the ejected debris gathered to form the Moon. In a study titled, "Moon-forming impactor as a source of Earth’s basal mantle anomalies", researchers from China, the United States, and the United Kingdom have found evidence which suggests that chunks of Theia ended up inside Earth.

The researchers are Dr Qian Yuan at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena and Prof Hongping Deng at the Shanghai Astronomical Observatory, which is part of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Researchers said in the study that the seismic images of Earth's interior have revealed two continent-sized anomalies with low seismic velocities, known as the large low-velocity provinces (LLVPs), in the lowermost mantle.

To carry out the study, the researchers used computer simulations of the giant impact and convection currents inside Earth.

Former UK prime minister Boris Johnson, who resigned in the aftermath of a probe into the Partygate scandal as it was found that he misled parliament, apparently asked the top scientists Chris Whitty and Patrick Vallance if coronavirus (COVID-19) could be destroyed by blowing a "special hairdryer" up the nose, reports said on Wednesday (Nov 1).

His former top aide Dominic Cummings said that Johnson had also asked him to find a "dead cat" to get rid of pandemic front pages of newspapers. Apparently, he was "sick" of it.

A 49-year-old woman was arrested on Thursday (Nov 2) in Australia and charged with murder in a case linked to deadly mushroom poisoning that left three people dead.

They died earlier this year after Erin Patterson served a lunch to a group of people that included her estranged parents-in-law.

Patterson remained in the headlines for the case that shook up a small rural town of Leongatha, 110 kilometres southeast of Melbourne.

According to the police, they arrested Patterson in the morning and began a search of her home with the help of "technology detector dogs". Reports have mentioned t hat the dogs can sniff out electronic devices such as USB keys.

The Victoria Police have confirmed that the woman was charged with three counts of murder and five counts of attempted murder.

She will be questioned by the homicide squad investigators once the search of her home is complete, said Detective Inspector Dean Thomas of the Victoria police homicide squad.

"Today's arrest is just the next step in what has been a complex and thorough investigation by homicide squad detectives and one that is not yet over," Thomas told reporters.

He added that the probe had been subject to "incredibly intense" media and public interest in Australia and internationally.

"I think it is particularly important that we keep in mind that at the heart of this three people have lost their lives," Thomas said, adding that "a tragedy such as this can reverberate for years to come" in smaller communities.

Local reports have mentioned that Patterson served the mushrooms as part of a beef Wellington dish on the afternoon of Jul 29 to her estranged parents-in-law Don and Gail Patterson, local Baptist pastor Ian Wilkinson and his wife Heather.

On the same night, the two couples were taken to hospital with food poisoning symptoms. Their health rapidly deteriorated, and within a week, three of them were dead.

Police believe their symptoms were consistent with those caused by eating highly toxic death cap mushrooms.

Two commanders killed

Now, Israel again has claimed that its strikes killed two Hamas military leaders in Jabalia on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The Israeli military said that the head of the Islamist group's anti-tank missile unit, Muhammad A'sar, was killed when fighter jets struck a Hamas command and control complex in Jabalia.

Jabalia is an area of Gaza that was set up as a refugee camp in 1948. However, the Israeli authorities claimed that the group had command centres and other "terror infrastructure under, around and within civilian buildings, intentionally endangering Gazan civilians".

Microsoft has launched a probe after a leading UK-based newspaper slammed the tech giant for an AI-generated poll on one of the news articles. The poll ran within Microsoft's curated news aggregator platform Microsoft Start.

The poll was about the death of a 21-year-old woman — a news article done by The Guardian. The report was on Lilie James, a water polo coach who was found dead with serious head injuries at a high school in Sydney, Australia.

The poll asked the online users - "What do you think is the reasons behind the woman's death?" The intention was to get answers based on readers' votes on whether they thought the woman had died by murder, suicide or accident.

The users also reacted sharply to the polls, as one of the reactions read, "This has to be the most pathetic, disgusting poll I've seen. The author should be ashamed."

Another user said in a sarcastic tone that it's "nice to know we can take a poll on how this woman died".

The Guardian Media Group accused Microsoft of causing "significant reputational damage" with an AI-generated poll, and on Tuesday, it asked the tech giant to take responsibility for the poll publicly.

In a statement to Axios on Wednesday, Microsoft said that a "poll should not have appeared alongside an article of this nature, and we are taking steps to help prevent this kind of error from reoccurring in the future".

As reported by Axios, Guardian CEO Anna Bateson wrote to Microsoft president Brad Smith: "This is clearly an inappropriate use of genAI by Microsoft on a potentially distressing public interest story, originally written and published by Guardian journalists."

Bateson's letter added that "this application of genAI by Microsoft is exactly the sort of instance that we have warned about in relation to news".

It added that this is a "key reason why we have previously requested to your teams that we do not want Microsoft's experimental genAI technologies applied to journalism licensed from the Guardian".

The author should be ashamed." Another user said in a sarcastic tone that it's "nice to know we can take a poll on how this woman died". Also read: London AI summit throws spotlight on scientist Alan Turing's legacy The Guardian Media Group accused Microsoft of causing "significant reputational damage" with an AI-generated poll, and on Tuesday, it asked the tech giant to take responsibility for the poll publicly. In a statement to Axios on Wednesday, Microsoft said that a "poll should not have appeared alongside an article of this nature, and we are taking steps to help prevent this kind of error from reoccurring in the future". In the letter, she even argued that Microsoft should take "full responsibility for it" and even suggested that they should run a poll on it. Bateson asked Microsoft to assure that it will not apply "experimental technologies on or alongside Guardian licensed journalism" without its explicit approval.

Kyiv military officials said on Monday that Russia has bulked up its forces around the devastated city of Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine and has switched its troops from defence to offence, but Ukraine has been preparing to repel the attacks.

Russia captured Bakhmut, the theatre of some of the bloodiest fighting of the 20-month-old war, in May. Ukraine launched a counteroffensive in June aimed at retaking occupied land in the country's south and east, including Bakhmut.

"In the Bakhmut area, the enemy has significantly strengthened its grouping and switched from defence to active actions," General Oleksandr Syrskyi, Ukraine's commander of ground forces, wrote on Telegram.

Volodymyr Fityo, head of communications for Ukraine's ground forces command, said Russian forces had been preparing since early this month to retake positions around Bakhmut lost during the Ukrainian counteroffensive.

"We saw this, the intelligence reported everything. We had been preparing, strengthening our defensive positions, engineering fortifications and pulling up reserves," Fityo told Reuters by telephone. "This does not come as a surprise for us."

Both men said Russian forces were particularly active near the Ukrainian-held town of Kupiansk in the northeast, where Fityo said Russia had numerical superiority.

Reuters could not independently verify accounts on the battlefield.

In its nightly report, the Ukrainian General Staff said Kyiv's forces remained on the offensive near Bakhmut.

"The enemy unsuccessfully tried to restore lost positions near Klishchiivka", it said, referring to a village south of Bakhmut recaptured by Ukraine in September.

Russian troops also tried to advance in Synkivka, north of Kupiansk, but made no headway, it added.

Russia has also been concentrating much of its efforts in recent weeks on a bid to encircle and capture Avdiivka, a strategic town southwest of Bakhmut.

Netanyahu says no ceasefire

The Israeli prime minister weighed in on the calls for a ceasefire in Israel's war against Hamas, saying it "will not happen". His remarks came as the UN issued a warning that not enough aid was coming in to meet "unprecedented humanitarian needs".

In a briefing to foreign press, Netanyahu said a ceasefire would amount to surrendering to Hamas. "Calls for a ceasefire are calls for Israel to surrender to Hamas, to surrender to terrorism... this will not happen," he said, vowing Israel would "fight until this battle is won".

The United States also objected to a ceasefire. "We do not believe that a ceasefire is the right answer right now," National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said, adding that "pauses" to get aid into Gaza should be considered instead.

James Webb Space Telescope, an extraordinary space telescope by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) gazed at Crab Nebula, revealing stunning details. The Crab Nebula is a supernova remnant, which is located 6,500 light-years away in the constellation Taurus.

It is reported to be an expanding remnant of a star's supernova explosion. The Japanese and Chinese astronomers recorded this violent event nearly 1,000 years ago in 1054 AD. The Crab Nebula has intrigued scientists for years and still draws attention as scientists aim at understanding the conditions, behaviour, and after-effects of supernovae.

On its website, NASA noted that a team led by Tea Temim at Princeton University is searching for answers about the Crab Nebula's origins using James Webb'ss NIRCam (Near-Infrared Camera) and MIRI (Mid-Infrared Instrument).

As quoted by NASA, Temim explained: "Webb's sensitivity and spatial resolution allow us to accurately determine the composition of the ejected material, particularly the content of iron and nickel, which may reveal what type of explosion produced the Crab Nebula."

NASA also released a side-by-side image of the Crab Nebula as seen by the Hubble Space Telescope and the James Webb to compare the different details.

Oh, Crab! James Webb reveals never-before-seen details of Crab Nebula

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) once shared a stunning image of a nebula of energy and particles blown by a pulsar left behind after a star exploded. The image blew people away as it looked like a human hand.

Shared by NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory, the caption of the post on Instagram read: "This famous hand-shaped structure is a nebula of energy & particles blown by a pulsar left behind after a star exploded."

"Watch as the blast wave from the explosion moves at nearly 9 million miles (14 million kilometres) per hour in NASA Chandra observations spanning 14 years," it had added.

Now, astronomers have used two of NASA's X-ray space telescopes, combining their imaging powers, to unveil the magnetic field "bones" of the hand-shaped structure.

NASA said in its report that the newest X-ray telescope, the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE), has observed MSH 15-52 for about 17 days.

As quoted by NASA, Roger Romani of Stanford University in California, who led the study, said: "The IXPE data gives us the first map of the magnetic field in the 'hand'. The charged particles producing the X-rays travel along the magnetic field, determining the basic shape of the nebula, like the bones do in a person's hand."

NASA said that according to IXPE, the magnetic field of the X-ray source determines the electric field direction of X-rays, which is called X-ray polarisation.

The degree of polarisation is exceptionally high in many sections of MSH 15-52, surpassing the maximum level predicted by the theoretical study.

That intensity requires a highly consistent and straight magnetic field, which implies that there is little turbulence in those areas of the pulsar wind nebula.

"We're all familiar with X-rays as a diagnostic medical tool for humans. Here we're using X-rays in a different way, but they are again revealing information that is otherwise hidden from us," said co-author Josephine Wong, also of Stanford.

As per NASA's report, one interesting feature of MSH 15-52 is a bright X-ray jet directed from the pulsar to the "wrist" at the bottom of the image.

NASA said in its report: "The new IXPE data reveal that the polarization at the start of the jet is low, likely because this is a turbulent region with complex, tangled magnetic fields associated with the generation of high-energy particles."

It added, "By the end of the jet the magnetic field lines appear to straighten and become much more uniform, causing the polarization to become much larger."

As per NASA, these findings suggest that particles move to regions where the magnetic field is uniform along the wrist, fingers, and thumb after receiving an energy boost in complicated turbulence regions close to the pulsar at the base of the palm.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) once shared a stunning image of a nebula of energy and particles blown by a pulsar left behind after a star exploded. The image blew people away as it looked like a human hand. Shared by NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory, the caption of the post on Instagram read: "This famous hand-shaped structure is a nebula of energy & particles blown by a pulsar left behind after a star exploded." "Watch as the blast wave from the explosion moves at nearly 9 million miles (14 million kilometres) per hour in NASA Chandra observations spanning 14 years," it had added. Also read: Oh, Crab! James Webb reveals never-before-seen details of the Crab Nebula Now, astronomers have used two of NASA's X-ray space telescopes, combining their imaging powers, to unveil the magnetic field "bones" of the hand-shaped structure. The charged particles producing the X-rays travel along the magnetic field, determining the basic shape of the nebula, like the bones do in a person's hand." NASA said that according to IXPE, the magnetic field of the X-ray source determines the electric field direction of X-rays, which is called X-ray polarisation. The degree of polarisation is exceptionally high in many sections of MSH 15-52, surpassing the maximum level predicted by the theoretical study. That intensity requires a highly consistent and straight magnetic field, which implies that there is little turbulence in those areas of the pulsar wind nebula. X-ray of hand-shaped structure in space reveals 'bones of a ghostly cosmic hand'

A 49-year-old disabled man was left with no choice but to drag himself to the front of an Air Canada plane to get off after the airline failed to provide a wheelchair for him. The man said that he was left in "significant pain", CBS News reported.

Rodney Hodgins said that he wants the flagship carrier to amend its policy so that when an aircraft lands, someone is always there to assist the person with a disability.

Hodgins uses a motorised wheelchair as he has spastic cerebral palsy, which is a group of disorders that affect a person's ability to move and maintain balance and posture. He apparently had altered his motorised wheelchair to fit in the cargo area in advance of the flight.

However, the flight attendant informed the couple that there was not enough time for them to get a wheelchair on board before the plane had to be made ready for takeoff again after the plane landed, his wife Deanna wrote in a recent Facebook post.

The couple thought the flight assistant was joking when she asked Rodney to pull himself off the plane alone. But he ended up moving past 12 rows of seats, using his upper body strength.

Hodgins is reportedly a hardware salesman from British Columbia. He flew to Las Vegas with his wife to celebrate their anniversary in August. He told CBC News: "It was quite painful for me to do that in the first place. It hurt my legs. For three days I felt terrible on my holiday. I thought, they don't care about me, they just want me to get off this plane."

Deanna said in the post that the incident left them devastated. She said, "It took us struggling, in front of a dozen people as some looked away and others looked on with shame, to get him off that plane."

She added, "He hurt his legs and I hurt my back – emotionally a lot more was hurt … my husband's human rights were trampled on and Air Canada won't respond to us, and never did reach out like they promised. Rod is the most beautiful human on the planet and didn't deserve this at all."

The company acknowledged the pain Rodney Hodgins and his wife suffered as it said, "We use the services of a third-party wheelchair assistance specialist in Las Vegas to provide safe transport on and off aircraft."

"Following our investigation into how this serious service lapse occurred, we will be evaluating other mobility assistance service partners in Las Vegas," it added.
