Dinosaurs roamed the Earth millions of years ago, but how they went extinct remains a matter of active research with experts also studying the exact origin and timing of the evolution of dinosaurs.

Dinosaurs first appeared during the Triassic period, between 243 and 233.23 million years ago and evidence suggests that an asteroid impact was the main reason for their extinction.

The asteroid, which was the size of a city, reshaped life on Earth 66 million years ago as it ended the age of the dinosaurs when it struck a shallow sea off the coast of what is now Mexico.

Previous studies have suggested that besides the impact of asteroids, volcanic eruptions that caused large-scale climate change, may also have been involved, in addition to other gradual changes to Earth's climate which took place over millions of years.

However, scientists have done computer simulations of the aftermath of the asteroid impact to find out that dust was a major factor in wiping out dinosaurs from the face of Earth.

In the latest study, published in Nature Geoscience, the researchers in Belgium have said that the "exact killing mechanisms" remain underresearched.

The study titled, "Chicxulub impact winter sustained by fine silicate dust", said that
more attention is needed to understand the role of potentially trillions of tonnes of dust triggered by the asteroid impact.

Previously, the experts have noted that soot, sulphur and dust remained in the atmosphere for years, blocking the Sun, which could have led to a global winter. In such a scenario, flora and fauna suffer massively.

To understand it better, the scientists ran simulations of the ancient climate. They studied fine particles which were recovered from a site in North Dakota — it's the same place where a layer of dust generated by the Chicxulub impact settled.

The various simulations found that the dust, which was found in Dakota, has the potential to remain in the atmosphere for up to 15 years.

In this case, the sun-blocking dust could have shut down photosynthesis for nearly two years, cooling down the planet by up to 15C.

As quoted by The Guardian, Cem Berk Senel, who is a researcher on the study at the Royal Observatory of Belgium in Brussels, said that the dust "most likely drove the last mass extinction event through the disruption of photosynthetic activity."

As quoted by the newspaper, Philippe Claeys, a geologist and planetary scientist at the Free University of Brussels and co-author of the study, added that the silicate dust emerged from the simulations as the "most efficient blocker of photosynthesis".

Claeys further added: "It renders the atmosphere opaque to sunlight, hampering the plants' photosynthetic process."

The report cited people familiar with the talks that Hamas is demanding Israel to allow aid, deliveries of fuel, and a cease-fire as part of a potential deal.

As per the report, Egyptian officials said that Hamas apparently also wants to discuss the possible release of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails.

A person familiar with the matter said as quoted by the report that negotiations have become more difficult since Israel intensified bombing and expanded its ground operations in the Gaza Strip.

Video: Indian Air Force bids farewell to MiG-21 Bison fighter jets

Venezuela's Supreme Justice Tribunal said on Monday it has suspended the results of an opposition presidential primary that took place this month, despite an electoral deal between the government and the opposition that allows each side to choose its candidate.

The ruling could risk the wrath of the United States, which this month rolled back some oil and gas industry and bond trading sanctions in exchange for the electoral deal.

The U.S. State Department has already said it will reinstate sanctions if the government of President Nicolas Maduro does not lift bans on some opposition candidates and free political prisoners and "wrongfully detained" Americans by the end of November.

The decision by the court, which the opposition considers an arm of the government, comes after the attorney general announced last week that his office is investigating the primary and members of its organizing commission for electoral violations, financial crimes and conspiracy.

Members of the organizing commission were meeting with prosecutors on Monday for interviews related to the case, the commission said on social media.

The opposition and the primary's winner Maria Corina Machado have insisted repeatedly the Oct. 22 vote was transparent and fair.

The government has decried alleged fraud since the day of the vote, which was organized without state help and which attracted more than 2.3 million voters.

The government of Maduro, in power for a decade, and the opposition signed an electoral deal in Barbados, agreeing to international observers and that each side can choose its candidate according to internal rules.

"We urge Nicolas Maduro and his representatives to uphold the commitments they made at the signing of the political roadmap agreement," a State Department spokesperson said. "The U.S. government will take action if Maduro and his representatives do not meet their commitments."

Both the investigation and the ruling come at the request of lawmaker Jose Brito, who the court said wanted to participate in the primary.

Brito does not belong to any of the parties that took part.

"Following the request of preventative protection and in consequence, all the effects of the distinct phases of the electoral process conducted by the National Primary Commission are suspended," the tribunal said on its website.

The commission must present all documents related to its creation, candidate registration, voting records and other documents, the tribunal said.

The commission must also account for the participation of candidates like Machado, who is barred from holding public office in a decision the opposition says is illegal.

The ruling "temporarily suspends the primary until there is a final decision from the tribunal," said lawyer and university professor Jose Vicente Haro. "The tribunal is late to the decision because it comes after the primary. They shouldn't have accepted the petition."

Some observers said the opposition parties that participated in the primary should simply recognize Machado once again as their unity candidate, making any ruling on the contest moot.

The opposition this month declined electoral authorities' offer of help organize the primary, and its request to delay the vote until November, after the authorities took several months to respond to the opposition's request for assistance.

The report said that the two scientists were looking for fossil fuels beneath the ground in northeastern France.

However, a couple of hundred metres down, they discovered something which could help the world's efforts to tackle the climate crisis.

Pironon told CNN, "This was not a real surprise for us." The report mentioned that it's quite common to find small amounts near the surface of a borehole.

But as they dug deeper, they found higher concentration as at 1,250 metres it was 20%, as compared to 14% at 1,100 metres.

White hydrogen: This clean-energy gas could help tackle climate crisis

The Maine National Guard had asked the local police last month to visit and check on the reservist, Robert Card, who went on to kill 18 people and injured many during mass shootings, The Associated Press reported. Card was later found dead after a days-long manhunt.

Two local law enforcement chiefs told the news agency service that in the month of September, a statewide awareness alert was issued.

The authorities were asked to be on the lookout for Card after he made threats against his base and fellow soldiers.

However, they stepped up patrols of the base and also paid a visit to Card's home, but they moved on after there weren't any signs of him in either of the places.

As quoted by the news agency, Jack Clements, who is the police chief in Saco, home to the US Army Reserve base where Card trained, said: "We added extra patrols, we did that for about two weeks. ... The guy never showed up."

On the other hand, Sagadahoc County Sheriff Joel Merry, whose jurisdiction includes Card's home in Bowdoin, said the Army Reserve tipped his department in September to the reservist's threats.

After reports of threats, the sheriff sent an awareness alert to every law enforcement agency in the state.

"We couldn't locate him," Merry said. He further added that he couldn't recall if there was any follow-up because "he doesn't have any reports with him".

The FBI said Saturday that Card had not been on its radar despite the earlier threats. FBI told the news agency AP that it "did not have nor did it receive any tips or information concerning Robert Card".

According to the investigating bureau, the instant background check system "was not provided with or in possession of any information that would have prohibited Card from a lawful firearm purchase".
