Who is Robert Card?

Law enforcement officials in Maine say Card is a certified firearms instructor and a member of the US Army Reserve. Card had recently made threats to carry out a shooting at a National Guard facility in Saco, Maine, and also reported mental health issues, including hearing voices, the officials said.

He is twice divorced and a father of three children. He has a history of arrests for domestic violence and other crimes. One of his ex-wives obtained a restraining order against him.

Some reports suggest that he may have voted for Barack Obama in the past, though he identifies as an independent politically.

Who is Robert Card? The 'person of interest' in Maine mass shootings

Scientists have said in new studies that the core of Mars can look bigger than it actually is because of a previously unknown layer of molten rock which is surrounding it.

The researchers have said that the pair of studies may finally solve a mystery from two years ago about how the centre of Mars appeared surprisingly large and soft.

To carry out the study, the team of scientists analysed seismic waves on the planet by using sensors on NASA's InSight lander, which touched down on the Red Planet in 2018.

The researchers hoped to find insights into the planet's inner structure by studying the seismic waves that rippled through Martian rock after a meteorite slammed into Mars in September 2021.

The findings were reported on Thursday (Oct 26) in two papers in Nature Journal. It mentioned that the researchers have discovered a layer of molten rock that envelops Mars's liquid-metal core.

In the report, Nature mentioned that the seismic waves which are produced by quakes or impacts can slow down or speed up depending on what type of material they are travelling through.

Hence, seismologists can measure the waves' passage in order to understand the details of the interior of a planet and what it looks like.

Researchers used the same technique on Earth as they probed the earthquakes to discover the planet's layers which are: a brittle outer crust, a mostly solid mantle, a liquid outer core, and a solid inner core.

Ever since its landing on the Red Planet, InSight's seismometer has recorded many observations of Mars-quake, in fact, it was also the first to detect marsquakes.

On the basis of the mission's observations of quakes in July 2021, researchers established the fact that the liquid core of Mars seemed to have a radius of around 1,830 kilometres, which was bigger than many scientists were expecting.

The finding also suggested that the core has surprisingly high amounts of light chemical elements, such as sulfur, mixed with iron.

But Henri Samuel, who is a geophysicist at the Institute of Earth Physics of Paris and lead author of one of the papers, said that the September 2021 meteorite impact "unlocked everything".

"A second liquid layer inside the planet also meshes better with other evidence, such as how Mars responds to being deformed by the gravitational tug of its moon Phobos," Nature had written.

In another paper, the same conclusions were made as the team, independent of Samuel's, agreed that Mars' core is surrounded by a layer of molten rock. However, they estimated that the core has a radius of 1,675 kilometres.

Its lead author, Amir Khan, who is a geophysicist at ETH Zurich, said that having molten rock right up against molten iron "appears to be unique".

"You have this peculiarity of liquid–liquid layering, which is something that doesn't exist on Earth," he added.

We’re publishing a report to document the ever-accelerating banning of literature in prisons, amplifying the voices of incarcerated readers and aiming to raise awareness about this issue and offer ways to push back against it," the group said.

Thousands of books banned in US prisons, including Amy Schumer's memoir. But why?

China passed a national legislation on Tuesday (Oct 24) to boost patriotic education for children and families in the nation, state media reported. The law aims to counter challenges such as "historical nihilism" and safeguard "national unity" as it provides a legal guarantee for imparting patriotic education.

The Patriotic Education Law was passed at a session of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, China's national legislature, Xinhua reported.

China's state news agency said that some people "are at a loss about what is patriotism", further adding that "historical nihilism" is a phrase used in China to describe public doubt and scepticism over the Chinese Communist Party's description of past events.

The law outlines the responsibilities of central and local government departments as well as those of schools and families. It will take effect on Jan 1, 2024.

Xinhua said, "While it is enacted to promote patriotism, the law stresses the need to be rational, inclusive and open-minded, open the country wider to the world and embrace other civilisations."

As per the law, patriotic education respects the "history and cultural traditions of other countries and draws inspiration from all of human civilisation's outstanding achievements".

Hong Kong would create its own national security law in 2024, leader John Lee said Wednesday (Oct 25). This comes four years after Beijing imposed sweeping legislation aimed at silencing dissent.

During his yearly policy address, Lee said: "The government is pressing ahead to draw up effective legislative options and will complete the legislative exercise in 2024."

In 2019, Hong Kong was rocked by pro-democracy protests. The protests also erupted in other parts of the world. Hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets, demanding greater freedom and more autonomy from China.

But Beijing reacted by imposing a national security law to punish four major crimes — secession, subversion, terrorism and collusion with foreign forces. The sentences ranged up to life in prison.

China introduced the national security law for Hong Kong in 2020. The law made it easier for Beijing to prosecute protesters and provided the nation with powers to shape life in Hong Kong the way it has never had before, with critics labelling it "the end of Hong Kong".

Lee, who was a security chief, said that the government would "continue to safeguard national security and improve its relevant legal system and enforcement mechanisms".

In Hong Kong, the Basic Law states that it is required to make its own law combating seven security-related crimes, including treason and espionage.

The task, often referred to as "a constitutional responsibility" by the city's government, has yet to be fulfilled. The last legislative attempt in 2003 was shelved after half a million Hong Kongers took to the streets to protest the move.

In his address, Lee focused on the property market and stabilising the ailing economy. Lee said that Hong Kong's economy, which contracted 3.5 per cent last year, would "resume growth this year" as inbound tourism and consumption improved, and unemployment fell.

Hong Kong's economy grew 2.2 per cent in the first half of the year and is expected to grow four per cent year-on-year.

Lee noted, however, that the external environment remains challenging given the interest rate hikes in some advanced economies, with Hong Kong investment and asset markets "negatively impacted".

Hong Kong to create its own national security law in 2024, says leader John Lee

Experts have raised concerns after avian influenza, or bird flu, was detected in the Antarctica region for the first time. British experts say that the deadly virus could pose a threat to penguins and other local species.

The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) said its staff at Bird Island, which is a remote British research station, noticed that a type of bird called skuas were sick and dying in South Georgia.

The tests were sent to Britain and the brown skua seabirds were found positive for avian influenza, said the UK's Polar Research Institute in a statement on Monday (Oct 23).

It added that the virus was most likely brought by birds returning from their migration to South America, where there has been a huge number of bird flu cases.

The virus has already killed an estimated 500,000 seabirds and 20,000 sea lions in Chile and Peru alone.

The statement added that the visitors to South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands are under enhanced biosecurity measures. They also added that in that region, the scientific fieldwork involving birds has been stopped.

There have been regular bird flu outbreaks since the virus first emerged in 1996. Much larger outbreaks started to spread southward to previously untouched areas, including South America since mid-2021. It led to mass deaths among wild birds and tens of millions of poultry being culled.

Michelle Wille, who is a bird flu expert at the University of Melbourne, said the spread of bird flu to the Antarctica region was "devastating news".

She wrote on X, formerly Twitter: "The situation could change rapidly."

As quoted by The Guardian, Ashley Bennison, the BAS science manager for Bird Island, said: "This is a particularly sad event to confirm. We will continue to monitor the species on the island as best as we can and keep the science going, but we are unsure of the full impact at the moment."

Ian Brown, virology head at the UK's Animal and Plant Health Agency, warned last week that there was a risk migrating birds could spread the virus from South America to the Antarctica islands and then onto the main landmass.

This could be a "real concern" for populations of birds such as penguins that are unique to Antarctica, he told journalists.
