Amit Sharma reportedly suffered injuries on his head and hand and has been hospitalised. Several other police personnel were also injured in the clashes with vehicles and shops destroyed.

As the violence erupted, Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal urged Lt Governor Anil Baijal and Union Home Minister Amit Shah to restore law and order in the wake of violence in parts of northeast Delhi.

However, the bill was passed after a big debate.

"Prosecuting someone who helps a patient with an incurable disease is a form of intolerance," socialist MP Isabel Moreira said in Parliament.

Morning News Brief: Coronavirus death toll rises, Iran elections and more!

As the death toll in China's coronavirus rose to 2,233 on Friday, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/like-a-zombie-apocalypse-residents-on-edge-as-coronavirus-cases-surge-in-south-korea-281821">South Korea</a> confirmed 52 more cases of the virus taking the overall figure to 156 in the country.
