Indianisms: Top 7 Words, Expressions not Commonly used Outside India

English is a funny language. Many expressions and words are used with different meanings in different countries. Several of these used by Indians means a different thing in other countries. Here is a list of seven of them.

'Revert back' is a phrase that's commonly used in India to mean 'reply.' However, the word 'revert' means 'going back to an earlier state or situation'. Using it to replace 'reply' is Indian, and using 'revert back' is redundant on top of it.

In India, 'would be' is often used to refer to someone's future spouse. However, this phrase can be confusing for people from other countries. In other countries, words like'fiancé' or 'fiancée' are used instead.

'Cheatercock' is a word commonly used in India to describe someone who acts dishonestly. However, this word can be offensive and inappropriate in other countries. It's best to use 'cheater' instead.

In India, an eraser is called a 'rubber,' but in other countries, 'rubber' is slang for a condom.

'Mention not' is a phrase commonly used in India to show that something was done with pleasure. However, this phrase is not commonly used in other countries, and it can be confusing.

In India, it's common to ask for someone's 'good name' instead of just asking for their name. However, this phrase can be confusing for people from other countries.

While 'pass out' means to become unconscious, in India, it's commonly used to mean completing a course or training. However, this word usage is not common in other countries.

Former Thailand prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra returned to his country on Tuesday (August 22) after 15 years in self-imposed exile. Shinawatra was swiftly arrested, taken to court and jailed after he landed back home at the Don Mueang Airport. His party is in talks with the military-backed legislators in order to name a prime minister to end the deadlock persisting weeks after the election. And his return and arrest are seen by observers as part of a possible deal to end his ouster and eventual return to political mainstream.

After returning to his motherland, Thaksin paid his respects to the king on his arrival and immediately was taken in a police convoy to the Supreme Court where he was charged with abuse of power and several other outstanding criminal offences. Shinawatra denied all such allegations and said they were politically motivated.

“Welcome back to Thailand daddy,” his daughter Paetongtarn Shinawatra posted on Instagram beneath a photograph of the family, adding that he had “entered the legal process”.

When he returned, he went into business, and during the late 1980s began building a successful telecommunications empire.

He founded the Thai Rak Thai (Thais Love Thais) party in 1998, and its rapid emergence transformed the country's politics. Thaksin swept into office in 2001, soundly defeating the Democrat Party.

He had to face the fallout from his government's suppression of news of an outbreak of bird flu, as well as criticism over the violent deaths of more than 2,500 people during a crackdown on drugs in 2003.

After more than five years in power, he was ousted in a military coup in September 2006, accused of corruption and abuse of power. Thaksin has been in self-imposed exile since, mostly in London or Dubai.

6 Health Benefits of Drinking Turmeric Milk

Turmeric Milk or 'Haldi Doodh', popularly known as 'Golden Milk' is a quick fix for many health issues. As little as a pinch of turmeric powder in a hot cup of milk is all that your body needs to heal itself.

Mongolia is home to around 1,000 snow leopards.

The curcumin in turmeric milk helps fight inflammation and joint pain. Its anti-inflammatory properties are comparable with certain mainstream pharmaceutical drugs.

Turmeric acts as a natural painkiller for joint and muscle aches because of its anti-inflammatory properties and helps improve bone health.

The turmeric in the milk may enhance digestion. It promotes fat digestion by increasing bile production by 62 per cent.

The ingredients present in golden milk, particularly if ginger and cinnamon are added to it, may help lower blood sugar levels.

Curcumin in turmeric contains anti-cancer properties. Consuming turmeric milk can help inhibit the growth of cancer/tumour cells, preventing spread and metastasis.

Chandrayaan-3 To Land on Moon on August 23

The spacecraft will attempt to soft land on the moon's South Pole on August 23, as per the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

The mission is all set to soft-land on the Lunar South on Wednesday, August 23 around 6:04 pm IST. The coverage will start at 5:27 pm IST.

ISRO shared the images of the lunar far side area captured by the Lander Hazard Detection and Avoidance Camera (LHDAC).

The Lander Hazard Detection and Avoidance Camera (LHDAC) assists in locating a safe landing area that is free from boulders or deep trenches, that are generally found on the lunar surface.

Chandrayaan-3: Final deboosting completed successfully

Mission's second and final deboosting operation was completed on August 20. With this, the Lander Module (LM)'s orbit is reduced to 25 km * 134 km.

Chandrayaan-3: What happened to the Propulsion Module (PM)?

The PM will continue its journey in the current orbit for months/years to perform a spectroscopic study of the Earth's atmosphere.

My Administration also deployed federal personnel to Nevada to ensure the state has additional support, and we will continue to coordinate with California, Nevada, and Arizona on any resources they might need.”

A major tropical cyclone, Hurricane Hilary, battered Southern California on Sunday night. Hilary originated from a disturbance south of the southern coast of Mexico associated with a tropical wave that entered the far eastern Pacific Ocean from Central America on August 12. This is the first time that the National Hurricane Center has issued a tropical storm warning for Southern California. The last time a tropical storm made landfall in Southern California was in Long Beach in 1939. In California, a magnitude 5.1 earthquake hit Southern California with its epicentre in Ojai, between Santa Barbara and Ventura. The quake occurred along the Sisar fault, according to USGS data. A social media post by Ventura County Sheriff revealed there were no immediate reports of damage. At 2:41PM, a magnitude 5.1 earthquake occurred Southeast of Ojai on the Sisar fault. Asia Cup 2023 India Squad announced: Ahead of the 2023 Asia Cup, India announced its 17-member squad on Monday. The announcement was followed by a press conference from Captain Rohit Sharma and chief selector Ajit Agarkar in Delhi.

With the ODI World Cup on the horizon, India's performance in the continental tournament - which will be contested in a 50-over format this year - will be critical to their chances at the flagship event later this year in their home country. Major concerns have been raised about the fitness of KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer, who have both been recovering from thigh and back injuries, respectively.

With Jasprit Bumrah back, bowling at full tilt and leading the side in the Ireland T20I series, there's a big positive in terms of the bowling department. Mohammed Shami, who has stayed out of action since the 2023 World Test Championship Final is also likely to make his return. But the bigger concerns for India are in their batting, specifically in the middle order.

What Ravi Shastri said ahead of the Team India squad announcement

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri believes that the Indian squad need more all-rounders for the 2023 ODI World Cup.

When asked about his opinion with regards to the 15-player squad India would go within the marquee event, Shastri told Star Sports, “I think to be fair, I will go with both the all-rounders – Axar and Shardul, it gives me an opportunity. And keep Sanju Samson on standby in case something happens to the keeper there, where he can just fly out.”

Indian Squad announced:

Rohit Sharma (captain), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Ishan Kishan, Hardik Pandya (vice-captain), Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Kuldeep Yadav, Prasidh Krishna

Reserve: Sanju Samson

World Cup squad to be chosen from among these players

This is not an official preliminary squad but Agarkar says that it is "obvious" that the World Cup team will be chosen from among these players. So this, for now, is the de facto preliminary squad for the World Cup.

Chandrayaan-3: Two days to go! Here's how to livestream Chandrayaan-3's soft landing on moon

“When words become unclear, I shall focus with photographs”, said Ansel Adams, the award-winning landscape photographer from the US. What Ansel Adams said has resonated with us at least once in our lives.

We all have come across moments in our life where we found ourselves short of words, unable to express what our eyes witness. In moments like these, we take the help of photographs- to express, capture or communicate something.

Photography is an art that has evolved significantly from traditional daguerreotypes to modern digital photography. It allows people to document their surroundings and convey powerful narratives.

Every year, August 19 is celebrated as World Photography Day, a day dedicated to photographers and the way they see and capture the world as well as to honor the incredible impact that photography has had on shaping our perceptions of the world.

To explore more about photography and to celebrate it as an art, WION talked to Captain Navtej Singh, a retired Naval Officer and a defence photographer who has experience in capturing breathtaking moments at sea and beyond, to mark the occasion.

Hailing from an Armed Forces background, Captain Navtej Singh (Retd) joined the National Defence Academy in June 1986. He served the nation as a commissioned officer for 32 years. It was the Navy that manoeuvred his passion for photography and allowed him to hone and showcase his fine skill.

Though he started his passion for photography with the Indian Navy, capturing men, women and mighty machines at sea, his palette of photography does not remain limited to the high seas.

An assorted palette of photos

Through his pictures, he has encapsulated a wide range of emotions across the diverse land of India. Every image clicked by Singh is a glimpse into human experience, emotions and connections that weave the world together.

Talking about the inspiration behind his assorted clicks, he said, “I find inspiration in the kaleidoscope of human experiences and the intricate tapestry of life itself. Every person I photograph, every moment I freeze in time, carries a unique story waiting to be told.”

“Through my lens, I aim to capture not just appearances, but the essence of emotions, connections, and the fleeting beauty that often goes unnoticed. It's the raw authenticity, the unguarded smiles, the moments of vulnerability, and the unspoken narratives that drive me to create images that resonate with the viewer's soul. In the diversity of life's portraits, I discover endless inspiration to convey the depth and richness of the human journey.”

To be able to emote such subtle nuances of expressions, like in these pictures, one must be fully aware of “the play of light and shadow, and the myriad of cultures that shape our global narrative,” said Singh.

“And while my camera adeptly captures these two dimensions, it's essential to acknowledge that what I carry within my heart, soul, and mind transcends those boundaries. These dimensions are a symphony of sounds, the gentle caress of the wind, evocative smells, the comforting clutter of life, and the intricate web of emotions. These elements converge to form a multifaceted experience that no camera can truly replicate. It's this amalgamation of sensations that infuses a deeper resonance into the images I capture,” expressed Singh further.

Photography helps to see beyond the ordinary

Photography has the power to evolve the way we see the world and provides a unique perspective. Talking about the change one experiences while clicking different moments, Singh gave us an insight into how photography enriched his perception of the world.

Beauty in the ordinary

Singh said, “Through the lens, I've learned to appreciate the beauty in even the most ordinary moments – the interplay of light and shadows, the intricacies of textures, and the emotions conveyed in a fleeting expression.”

“This heightened awareness encourages me to pause, observe, and find wonder in the details that might otherwise go unnoticed. Photography has taught me that there are countless stories waiting to be told, and it's a privilege to capture and share these narratives through my lens.”

Capturing the high seas and beyond

With a fair experience of capturing life both on and off the sea, Singh told us that his dual experience provide him with contrasting elements and remarkable similarities within the realm of photography.

Photographing the sea, warships, and fighter jets requires an acute awareness of their distinct characteristics and dynamics. While, capturing the life beyond it, is a canvas of diverse landscapes, cultures, and human stories.

Snapshots of the high seas

“The sea, with its ever-changing moods and expansive horizon, challenges me to adapt quickly to shifting lighting conditions and capture the depth of its beauty. Similarly, warships and fighter jets demand a keen eye for detail and precision – the sharp lines, intricate machinery, and the electrifying energy that they embody. Each frame is a testament to the formidable power and intricate engineering that define these subjects,” said Singh explaining about clicking the sea.

On the other hand, to capture breathtaking shots of landscapes, Singh sometimes has to take shots from an open-sided helicopter or the door of an aircraft soaring at speeds surpassing 250 knots. This requires “a formidable undertaking that requires an unwavering blend of skill, focus, and physical endurance,” said Singh.

“The elements become formidable foes as the wind's force threatens to unsteady one's balance, making even the simplest movements a test of resilience.”

Snapshots of beyond the sea

Each shot that is clicked is created with precision. For some clicks, as Singh told us, an unwavering commitment is required to capture the moment that often lies beyond his comfort and safety.

Whether it is capturing bustling port cities, remote coastal villages, or the vastness of the open sky, it is the camera that becomes a bridge between these scenes to connect it with the lens.

“Just as my naval career urged me to navigate and comprehend the intricacies of maritime operations, my photography leads me to explore and understand the myriad facets of the world beyond the sea,” said Singh.

Talking of similarities among these seemingly disparate subjects, Singh said that it is the perspective that makes unites these subjects of photography.

“Just as my naval experience cultivated a unique perspective on defence and maritime operations, this perspective seamlessly translates into my photographic work. The attention to detail required when capturing the sleek contours of a fighter jet mirrors the precision needed in naval operations. Simultaneously, the broader vistas beyond the sea echo the strategic awareness honed during my service,” said Singh.

In both cases, the camera becomes a tool for story-telling. It enables us to convey the beauty in the diversity of the world that extends beyond the horizon.

Through the lens of Retd Naval officer: Celebrating 'kaleidoscope of human experiences' at sea and beyond

Coffee contains caffeine, a central nervous system stimulant that is known for its ability to fight fatigue and increase energy levels.

According to a study published in 2021 in the American Heart Association journal Circulation: Heart Failure, drinking one or more daily cups of plain, caffeinated coffee was associated with a significant reduction in long-term risk of heart failure.

According to some research, coffee could alter fat storage and support gut health, both of which may be beneficial for weight management.

Some research suggests that consuming coffee regularly could be associated with a decreased risk of developing type 2 diabetes over the long term.

A 2015 study appearing in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute found that those who drank four or more cups of caffeinated coffee each day had a 20% lower risk of developing melanoma than people who drank decaffeinated coffee or no coffee.

According to a 2012 study published in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease, those whose blood levels contained caffeine amounts equivalent to about three cups of coffee were far less likely to have progressed to full-blown dementia than those who had consumed little or no caffeine.
