Asia Cup 2023: 6 days to go. Here's how many times India and Pakistan have met in tournament

India’s moon mission, Chandrayaan-3 scripted history on August 23 with the successful landing on the moon’s South Pole. After this, India became the fourth nation to land on the lunar surface after Russia (Soviet Union), the United States and China, and the first-ever nation to soft land on the south pole of the moon.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated India and the world, calling this achievement a gift for humankind and science. The scenes at the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) were euphoric. ISRO chief S Somanth dedicated this historic feat to the entire scientific community of India’s space agency.

The Pragyan rover will now carry out a series of experiments on the surface of the moon. The rover will send data to the lander which will send it to Earth.

Pragyan will check the chemical composition of the lunar surface, and examine the lunar soil and rocks. It will measure the ions and electrons density and the thermal properties of the lunar surface near the polar region. This will be the first of its kind study as no other country has ever ventured to the moon's south pole.

While Vikram and Pragyan have a planned mission life of 1 lunar day (14 days on Earth), there is a possibility that the duo could live longer. ISRO has designed its lander and rover to harness solar power and charge its onboard batteries, but that would be possible only during the lunar day.

Chandrayaan-3: Here's what's on agenda for Pragyan rover in the next 14 days

8 Candidates You'll See in First GOP Debate

Eight Republicans are now set for the first debate of the 2024 presidential primary on Wednesday in Milwaukee, the Republican National Committee (RNC) announced on Monday night. Former President Donald Trump won't be among these 8 candidates.

The Governor of Florida has been Trump's leading rival in most polling, finishing a distant second to him in polls in early-voting states.

The South Carolina senator has been looking for a breakout moment. The first debate could be his chance.

South Carolina lawmaker and the state’s first minority governor has also served as Trump's UN ambassador for about two years. She is the only woman in the GOP race.

The biotech entrepreneur and author of “Woke, Inc.: Inside Corporate America’s Social Justice Scam” is an audience favourite at multi-candidate events.

The former New Jersey governor opened his campaign by portraying himself as the only candidate ready to take on Trump.

Burgum, a wealthy former software entrepreneur now in his second term as North Dakota’s governor, has been using his fortune to boost his campaign.

Trump's former Vice President, Pence announced on August 8 that he had become the first candidate to formally submit his donor count to the RNC for verification.

The former two-term Arkansas governor was the final candidate to meet the RNC’s qualifications.

Chandrayaan-3 soft landing: The countdown begins. India’s lunar mission Chandrayaan-3 is all set to land on the moon’s South Pole on August 23 around 6:04 pm IST. The India Space Research Organisation (ISRO) shared the update of the Chandrayaan-3 mission on X (formerly Twitter) and thanked everyone for their wishes and positivity.

Ahead of the landing, the space agency said the Mission Operations Complex (MOX), located at the ISRO Telemetry, Tracking and Command Network (ISTRAC), is buzzing with energy and excitement.

Chandrayaan-3 is the third instalment of the Chandrayaan series and India's second attempt to achieve a soft landing on the Moon's surface. Only three countries have successfully landed spacecraft on the airless lunar surface.

The Chandrayaan-3 mission is currently in Phase-7, which is the Pre-Landing Phase. Phase-7 began on Monday, with the second and final deboosting operation being successfully carried out on August 20.

What is soft landing on moon?

A 'soft landing' takes place when a spacecraft lands intact on the lunar surface and does not, intentionally or otherwise, crash. The Moon Lander Vikram, which separated from its orbiting mothership, has already performed two manoeuvres to lower its altitude for a perfect touchdown.

On April 11, Israel attempted a soft landing near the lunar South Pole of the Moon. The Israeli craft, however, faced problems during its landing and crashed on the Moon.

Israel's attempt at a Moon landing failed at the last minute when the craft suffered an engine failure as it prepared to land.

Chandrayaan-3: What is different this time?

Chandrayaan-3 consists of an indigenous Lander module (LM), a Propulsion module (PM), and a Rover with the objective of developing and demonstrating new technologies required for interplanetary missions. The Lander will have the capability to soft land at a specified lunar site and deploy the Rover which will carry out in-situ chemical analysis of the lunar surface during the course of its mobility.

The propulsion module will carry the Lander from launch vehicle injection to the final lunar 100 km circular polar orbit and separate the two.

Ahead of the Chandrayaan-3 launch, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Chairman S Somanath on Monday said that they “will be able to do a soft landing on the Moon” during the mission.

Chandrayaan-3's technology improved its design to ensure that it achieved a successful soft landing this time. Some notable changes are:

Simplified payload

While Chandrayaan-2's orbiter carried nine in-situ instruments, Chandrayaan-3's propulsion module will house a single instrument called 'spectro-polarimetry of habitable planet earth' (SHAPE). SHAPE will analyse Earth's spectrum to generate data on habitable exoplanets, contributing to the study of exoplanetary habitability and the search for potential life beyond our Solar System.

Enhanced Lander capabilities

Based on the lessons learned from Chandrayaan-2, Chandrayaan-3 incorporates "lander hazard detection & avoidance cameras" to assist in coordination with the orbiter and mission control during the lander's descent to the lunar surface. Chandrayaan-3 will feature two such cameras compared to the single camera on its predecessor.

Chandrayaan-2

Chandrayaan-2 was launched on 22 July 2019 with an attempt to ‘soft-land’ on the lunar surface. However, the orbiter’s attempt to soft-land a robotic module named Vikram on the moon’s surface failed on 7 September 2019. A successful landing would have made history for India as it would have been the world’s first lunar landing near its unexplored South Pole.

Chandrayaan-1

Chandrayaan-1 was launched on 22 October 2008, a major boost to the country’s indigenous space programme. It was launched to survey the lunar surface over a two-year period and to produce a complete map of the chemical composition at the surface and three-dimensional topography.

Chandrayaan-3: What is soft landing? Will India's lunar mission achieve this feat this time?

India is a few hours away from creating history. Chandrayaan-3, the third lunar mission of the country will attempt a soft landing on the moon's south pole today (Aug 23) at 6:04 pm IST. All eyes are on Chandryaan-s's Vikram Lander which also contains the Pragyan rover that will study the surface of the moon.

Ahead of the landing, the space agency said the Mission Operations Complex (MOX), located at the ISRO Telemetry, Tracking and Command Network (ISTRAC), is buzzing with energy and excitement.

A mission that was started as a dream by some scientists has now become the pride of the country’s commoners. The history will be made on August 23, when Chandrayaan-3’s Lander and Rover will land on moon’s lesser-known area- Lunar South.

Moon has always intrigued scientists, philosophers, space enthusiasts and commoners alike. Many attempts have been made in the past to reach the moon and to look for the probability of life on its surface. Moon’s South Pole, also known as the lunar south pole is of special interest to scientists because of the occurrence of water ice in permanently shadowed areas around it. The lunar south pole has craters on its surface that are unique in their own way, as sunlight is not able to reach their interiors.

NASA even claims that some craters in the moon’s south pole have not received sunlight for billions of years and the temperatures here could dip as low as -203 degrees Celsius.

This is why these craters are cold traps that contain a fossil record of hydrogen, water ice, and other volatiles dating from the early Solar System. Considering these cold temperatures, the matter trapped in the southern lunar region wouldn’t have witnessed much change over the years and could thereby hold clues to early life.

These factors make the southern lunar pole fascinating for scientific investigations.

Explorations to Moon’s South Pole

Several nations have explored or tried to explore this particular region on the lunar south pole.

In 2008, ISRO developed a Moon Impact Probe (MIP), which separated from the moon-orbiting Chandrayaan-1 on 14 November 2008 at 20:06 IST and after nearly 25 minutes crashed as planned, near the rim of Shackleton Crater. Shackleton is an impact crater in the lunar south pole. With this mission, India became the first nation to hard land or impact the lunar south pole.

India's second lunar mission Chandrayaan-2, which was launched on 22 July 2019, attempted to soft-land on the south polar region of the moon. But unfortunately, the lander failed to land safely, losing communication barely 335 metres from the ground.

With the third instalment of the Chandrayaan series, India will attempt to soft land on the lunar south pole this time.

Chandrayaan-3: What makes Moon's south pole so fascinating?

Former US President Donald Trump says he will surrender on Thursday in an alleged conspiracy case to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. He is expected to voluntarily surrender at the Fulton County Jail in Atlanta. Trump faces 13 felony counts in Georgia related to the case.

Trump’s appearance in Georgia on August 23 would come a day after the first Republican primary debate. Donald Trump will not participate in the first Republican primary debate. He is currently the Republican Party’s front-runner for the 2024 presidential nomination.

The 77-year-old former president and the 18 co-defendants in the election racketeering case are to be booked at the Fulton County Jail, also known as the Rice Street Jail, according to the sheriff’s office.

Trump will not undergo standard booking procedure?

The standard booking procedure for a defendant is to be fingerprinted and to have a mugshot taken before they are released on bond.

Trump did not have to undergo the indignity of having a mugshot taken during his three previous arrests this year. In New York on charges of paying hush money to a porn star, in Florida for mishandling top secret government documents and in Washington on charges of conspiring to upend his 2020 election loss to Democrat Joe Biden.

IND vs IRE, 3rd T20I: Squads, schedule, time, live-streaming & broadcasting details of India vs Ireland

A few hours from now, Chandrayaan-3 will make history. It will attempt to achieve a feat which no other moon mission ever has - a soft landing on the moon’s south pole. All the phases of India’s lunar mission have been achieved successfully and now all eyes are on the successful landing of Vikram Lander, which also carries the Pragyan rover, which will conduct a study on the lunar surface for one Lunar day or 14 Earth days.

On 22 July 2019, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) launched its ambitious Chandrayaan-2 mission. The mission was also to attempt a soft landing on the moon’s south pole.

However, the Vikram lander crashed when it deviated from its intended trajectory while attempting to land on 6 September 2019. According to a failure analysis report submitted to ISRO, the crash was caused by a software glitch.

Ahead of the launch, ISRO’s Chairman S Somnath assured that no such software glitch would be faced by Chandrayaan-3. He said that the spacecraft is developed in a fail-safe manner keeping in mind what went wrong with Chandrayaan-2. Even if all the sensors fail, the engines stop, Vikram would still be able to land, he said.

But what if there is still a miss? Here are three alternative plans that can be carried out.

1. Second attempt for soft-landing on August 24

Chandrayaan 3 will make the second attempt to soft-land on the south pole of the moon on August 24.

At 5:45 pm IST, the soft landing process of Chandrayaan-3 will start after internal checks and when the sun rises on the moon.

Starting from 5.45 pm, it will be a crucial time of 17 minutes in which the lander will fire its engines and prepare for the landing. The spacecraft will have to become vertical from horizontal for the landing.

“If everything fails, if all the sensors fail, nothing works, still it (Vikram) will make a landing. That’s how it has been designed — provided that the propulsion system works well. We have also made sure that if two of the engines (in Vikram) don’t work this time also, it will still be able to land,” said the chairman.

2. Wait till the next lunar sunrise

If there is a miss in the soft landing of the Chandrayaan 3 today, the window for more attempts will remain open for 14 days as a lunar day is equivalent to 14 Earth days. The next window will open when the sun rises on the moon next.

3. Chandrayaan-3 will hover at its current position

As Chandrayaan 3 waits for the next attempt, it will hover in its current orbit of 25 km * 134 km.

“If it doesn’t land tomorrow owing to whatever factor, whether the health of the lander or a break in communication, we will attempt the landing again within 24-50 hours. Meanwhile, alternate landing sites will also be considered,” S Somanath said.

6 Health Benefits of Drinking Warm Water in Morning

Drinking water, hot or cold, keeps your body healthy and hydrated. But some studies claim that hot water specifically can help improve digestion, relieve congestion, and even promote relaxation. Here are some benefits of drinking warm water every morning.

A cup of hot water creates steam. Holding a cup of hot water and taking a deep inhale of the gentle vapour may help loosen clogged sinuses and even relieve a sinus headache.

Drinking warm water in the morning can help stimulate digestion and improve bowel movements. It can also help flush out toxins from the body and improve gut health.

Drinking warm water can increase the body's metabolic rate, which can help burn calories and aid weight loss.

Warm water increases blood circulation through arteries and veins. More efficient blood flow can have benefits like improved blood pressure to decreased risk of heart disease.

Warm water is better for your teeth. Cold water may cause filling materials to contract and break off, thus destroying dental work. Some experts recommend brushing with warm water, too.

Drinking warm water increases blood flow, helping your muscles to relax. This muscle relaxation can aid with a wide range of pains, from menstrual cramps to arthritis.

7 Popular Indian Movies Banned in Pakistan

The film was banned in Pakistan as it was based on the Indian-Pakistan War. The film also showed an Indian marrying a person from the neighbouring country.

Akshay Kumar's Padman was based on the story of menstrual awareness. Federal Censor Board of Pakistan deemed it as 'against our traditions and culture.'

Saif Ali Khan and Katrina Kaif’s movie Phantom was banned because Mumbai attack mastermind Hafiz Saeed was shown in a negative light, as per Pakistan Censor Board.

The Alia Bhatt-starrer film was based on the story of an Indian spy who travels to Pakistan on a mission. The film was a hit in India but was banned in Pakistan.

Dhanush and Sonam Kapoor's movie was much-loved in India, though we agree that it glorified stalking. However, Pakistan found Sonam's character too bold for a Pakistani woman and hence the film was banned in Pakistan.

Farhan Akhtar's film reportedly found no takers in Pakistan because of the line, “Mujhse nahi hoga. Main Pakistan nahi jaonga.” ( I cannot do this. I will not go to Pakistan).

Censor boards in Islamabad and Karachi banned the film because the Akshay Kumar starrer portrays a negative image of Muslims and the negative characters in the film also have Muslim names.
