Parsi New Year 2023: The Parsi New Year, also known as Nowruz, is the day that marks the beginning of spring and the renewal of nature. It is celebrated by different cultures and communities around the world, including India. In India, the auspicious day falls between July and August every year.

The word Nowruz is made up of two Persian words, ‘Now’, which means new and ‘Roz’, which means day. The tradition of celebrating Parsi New Year is believed to have been observed by Iranians and Zoroastrians for the past 3,000 years. The festival is based on the Iranian Solar Hijri calendar.

They fled the early Muslim conquests of Persia to preserve their Zoroastrian identity. In present-day India, Parsis live mainly in Mumbai. Some Parsis also live in Karachi (Pakistan) and Bengaluru (India).

In India, people celebrated both New Years- first based on the Iranian calendar and second according to the Shahenshahi calendar.

Celebrations

On this day, Parsi people pray for good health and prosperity, spending their day cleaning their homes and adorning them with flowers and rangolis. They don traditional attire and visit the fire temple, also known as the ‘Agiary’, where they offer milk, flowers, fruits and sandalwood to the sacred fire.

The festivities revolve around the ‘Four Fs’ — fire, fragrance, food and friendship. The occasion involves indulging in delectable Parsi cuisine, seeking forgiveness for the past year’s transgressions, mental purification and embarking on the New Year with love and harmony.

Independence Day: Evolution of Indian Flag

The National Flag of India, in its present form, was adopted on 22 July 1947. Here is a brief history of India's tricolour through all its phases:

During the Swadeshi and Boycott struggle, a flag of India was hoisted for the first time in the Parsee Bagan Square in Calcutta (present-day Kolkata).

A similar flag with slight modifications was raised by Madam Bhikaji Cama in Paris.

As part of the Home Rule Movement, Annie Besant and Bal Gangadhar Tilak hoisted another flag. The flag signified autonomous rule for Indians within the British colonial empire.

At the Bezwada (now Vijayawada) session of Congress, a young freedom fighter Pingali Venkaiah presented the design of a flag to Mahatma Gandhi.

A formal resolution was passed adopting Pingali Venkaiah's flag with a little modification.

Finally, in July 1947, the Constituent Assembly formally adopted the flag of free India. This came to be called the Tiranga, or Tricolour.

Olive oil is rich in protective compounds that impact health positively in several ways, including protecting against heart disease and type 2 diabetes.

Olive oil is rich in monounsaturated fats, which are known to reduce the risk of heart disease. Consuming olive oil as a replacement for saturated and trans fats can help lower bad cholesterol levels.

Regular consumption of olive oil may help reduce chronic inflammation and the risk of inflammatory diseases.

The monounsaturated fats in olive oil can increase satiety and promote a feeling of fullness, potentially reducing overall calorie intake.

Olive oil contains powerful antioxidants, such as vitamin E and phenolic compounds, which help protect cells from damage caused by free radicals.

Research suggests that regular consumption of olive oil may have a protective effect on cognitive function and reduce the risk of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease.

Chandrayaan-3 Updates: Orbit Circularisation Phase Commences

ISRO's Chandrayaan-3 performed precise manoeuvre today, achieving a near-circular orbit of 150 km * 177 km.

This phase aims to position the spacecraft in a near-circular orbit around the Moon. This phase is crucial for the success of the mission as it sets the stage for the subsequent landing attempt.

With trans-lunar injection (TLI) on August 1, the Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft was put on the path towards the moon at an altitude of nearly 3.6 lakh km.

Chandrayaan-3's moon-bound manoeuvres started with the Lunar-Orbit Insertion (LOI) phase on August 5. With this, the spacecraft was inserted into the translunar orbit.

The landing of India's third lunar mission is planned for August 23. Chandrayaan-3 has been progressively approaching the moon through a series of meticulously planned and executed manoeuvres.

The next moon-bound operation is planned for August 16 around 8:30 am IST, as per ISRO.

The name of the mission is taken from the Sanskrit word ‘Aditya’ which means related to the Sun or God of the Sun. The L1 stands for Lagrange point 1 of the Sun-Earth system. The Aditya-L1’s spacecraft will be placed in a halo orbit around this Lagrange point 1 which is about 1.5 million km from the Earth.

As per ISRO, “A satellite placed in the halo orbit around the L1 point has the major advantage of continuously viewing the Sun without any occultation/eclipses. This will provide a greater advantage of observing the solar activities and its effect on space weather in real-time.”

History of Aditya-L1

Aditya-L1 as a mission was conceptualised in January 2008 by the Advisory Committee for Space Research. It was initially envisaged as a small 400 kg, Low Earth Observation (LEO) satellite with a coronagraph to study the solar corona. An experimental budget of Rs 3 crore was allocated for the financial year 2016–2017.

The scope of the mission has since been expanded and it is now planned to be a comprehensive solar and space environment observatory to be placed at the Lagrange point 1. As of July 2019, the mission has an allocated cost of ₹378.53 crore, excluding launch costs.

Chandrayaan-3, the third lunar mission which was launched on July 14, is also scheduled to land on the lunar surface on August 23-24. Within a few days, the ISRO will also launch its maiden Sun mission Aditya-L1.

Perseid Meteor Shower 2023: How to Spot Them this Weekend

The Perseids are named after the constellation Perseus. This is because the meteor shower’s radiant, or the direction from which it seems to originate, will lie in the same direction as Perseus.

The Perseid meteor shower is considered the best meteor shower of the year with swift and bright meteors, according to NASA.

Perseid Meteor Shower 2023: Time and Date

It is expected to peak on August 13 at 1:28 pm IST (1:58 am PT/12 am EDT).

Where does Perseid Meteor Shower come from?

Meteor showers happen when the Earth passes through the trail of space debris left behind by a comet or other celestial bodies. The Perseids are caused by the debris from the comet Swift-Tuttle.

As per Bill Cooke, NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office's lead, US residents can expect to see around 40 Perseids in the hour before dawn on peak nights.

In order to see fainter meteors, your eyes will need to adapt to the dark. It is suggested to carry a red flashlight to preserve your night vision.
