The Odyssey: How Matt Damon accidentally became Hollywood's most expensive rescue mission

In today's world, many people find it easier to reach out to an AI chatbot instead of a friend. Even at odd hours, it responds within seconds, asks how you are feeling, and offers words of comfort. But is it right to rely on a virtual companion instead of waiting for your next therapy session?

Artificial intelligence is changing the way people seek help, making mental health-related info more accessible. But can it replace actual therapy and the human connection? WION reached out to experts to understand where AI can help and where it falls short.

How much can AI help?

Artificial intelligence has become increasingly capable of handling routine mental wellness tasks. It can help with some of the straightforward parts of mental health support, including mood tracking, breathing exercises, journaling prompts, and recognising unhelpful thought patterns. This is very useful, especially for people who don't have easy access to a therapist.

Also Read: Why Kidney stone cases rise sharply in summer - and how to protect yourself

But the part of therapy that actually does the deeper work isn't really about techniques at all. "It's about feeling genuinely heard by another human being who is fully present with you in the room. Processing trauma, sitting with grief, navigating a crisis, or working through something that keeps shifting as you talk about it, all of that requires a level of human judgment, emotional attunement, and moment-to-moment sensitivity that AI simply isn't capable of yet," says Dr Chandni Tugnait, MD (A.M), Psychotherapist, Life Alchemist, Coach & Healer, Founder & Director, Gateway of Healing.

Why are people opening up to AI?

One reason behind the growing popularity of AI companions is their constant availability. "More and more people are now turning to AI for emotional support, mostly because they're available at three in the morning when no one else is, and they don't judge you, interrupt you, or make you feel like a burden for bringing something up again. For a lot of people, that kind of unconditional availability fills a gap that real relationships, as much as we value them, don't always manage to. There's also something about the absence of social consequences that makes it easier to say things out loud that feel too vulnerable or too complicated to say to an actual person in your life," Dr Tugnait adds.

Dr Abhay Singh Tomar, Consultant Neuro-Psychiatrist, Kailash Hospital, Greater Noida, a part of Kailash Healthcare, agrees that AI can encourage people to speak about their emotions.

Also Read: Instagram vs love: Why does every relationship need a green or red flag label?

AI for mental health support

"AI companions can offer fast conversational support, keep people encouraged to open up emotionally and nudge healthy routines. But you know they should really be seen as backup instruments not as replacement for mental healthcare. If someone has depression, anxiety, or just feels severe psychological distress, they still need prompt evaluation, evidence-based treatment, and supervision by qualified mental health professionals."

Who is more likely to become attached?

Experts believe that while anyone can use AI companions, some groups may be more likely to develop emotional bonds with them.

"Some people, especially adolescents, young adults, older adults dealing with loneliness, or folks with social anxiety, might end up attaching more easily to AI companions. Traits like introversion, emotional reactivity, or simply preferring non-judgmental conversations can steer that attachment too, even though everyone’s experience is honestly pretty different," says Dr Tomar.

While AI can feel like a safe space, experts warn that emotional attachment should not replace human relationships.

Also Read: Obsessed with true crime dramas? Here's what psychologists say about you

The danger of replacing people with AI

Spending more time talking to a chatbot than interacting with real people could increase loneliness. "If dependence grows too much, relying on AI for emotional help might shrink real human contact, push social withdrawal further, and make it harder to get professional care when symptoms get worse. Social withdrawal can cause onset of other comorbid psychological disorders. Sure, AI might bring temporary calm but it can’t really mirror the empathy, responsibility, or the subtle understanding that good relationships, and trained clinicians, bring," says Dr Tomar.

Dr Tugnait also believes AI should never be mistaken for therapy.

Also Read: Sushi to Okonomiyaki: 8 Japanese dishes every food lover should try

"No, and this matters more than people realise. AI can be a useful first step, a way to process thoughts, feel less alone at odd hours, or build enough clarity to eventually seek real help. But it doesn't have the training, the ethical accountability, or the genuine human presence that therapy actually requires. Using it as a permanent substitute is a bit like managing a serious injury with painkillers indefinitely. It masks the discomfort without ever really addressing the root cause."

Where AI lacks

Despite the AI being advanced, it still lacks and has various limitations in mental healthcare. "Artificial intelligence cannot comprehend emotions, make appropriate decisions, or comprehend complex social and psychological ideas. The inability of artificial intelligence is that it cannot assess the risk of suicide, diagnose mental illnesses, or respond to emergencies. However, the clinicians will always be needed for individualized treatment, crisis intervention, and recovery techniques in the long run," says Dr Tomar.

Therefore, artificial intelligence should be viewed as a supplement rather than a substitute for professional care.

AI has become an essential element in everyone's lives. But is it safe to use your virtual companion for mental health support? Read on to know what experts have to say.

Also Read: Why Kidney stone cases rise sharply in summer - and how to protect yourself But the part of therapy that actually does the deeper work isn't really about techniques at all. AI is always listening, but can it replace a therapist? Experts weigh in

Long before social media became popular, Studio Ghibli had crafted a universe where silence often spoke louder than words. The celebrated Japanese animation studio built a loyal fanbase with its evocative portrayal of rustling trees, steaming bowls of food, and rain-soaked train rides. Even today, those stories are liked by fans and they can be found on streaming platforms. Let's take a look at the entity built with imagination.

History of Studio Ghibli

The studio was a gift from legendary filmmakers Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata, along with producer Toshio Suzuki. It was founded in 1985 in Tokyo with the aim of reshaping animation. But have you ever thought why they chose the name "Ghibli"? It is said that the term is derived from an Italian word linked with a hot desert wind, which basically represents the idea of bringing a fresh current into the anime industry.

Also Read: Ahead of Japan PM Sanae Takaichi's India visit, here's how the Japanese writing system works

In its four-decade journey, the studio has produced more than twenty feature films, and each combines painstaking hand-drawn animation with heartfelt storytelling.

Fans know that their stories do not rely merely on heroes and villains, but on complex relationships, moral ambiguity and emotions. Some of the iconic films that one must revisit are My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke, Howl's Moving Castle, Kiki's Delivery Service and Spirited Away.

The best part about these films is that they appeal to both children and adults.

Also Read: Why Japan PM Sanae Takaichi's India visit is strategically significant

Why does Studio Ghibli remain special in India?

The popularity of Ghibli in India is said to have grown organically. Earlier, anime enthusiasts used to circulate the films through DVDs, introducing them to the emotional stories.

But after the arrival of streaming platforms, it shifted mainstream pop culture, and Miyazaki's work gained a lot of new followers.

It is due to the focus on family, respect for nature, childhood innocence, and folklore that Ghibli became popular across cultures despite originating in Japan.

Also Read: Japan PM Sanae Takaichi to make first official visit to India in July

The reach of Studio Ghibli

Now one can also find Ghibli-inspired artwork, merchandise, and more on social media. There's also a Ghibli Park in Japan and a Ghibli Museum in Mitaka that allows visitors to understand the films better.

If you are new to the studio's storytelling, My Neighbor Totoro (1988), Kiki's Delivery Service (1989), Princess Mononoke (1997), Spirited Away (2001), Howl's Moving Castle (2004), The Tale of the Princess Kaguya (2013), and The Boy and the Heron (2023) are some titles to begin with.

Founded in 1985 in Tokyo by filmmakers Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata, Studio Ghibli has been giving fans some heartfelt and emotional stories that appeal to both children as well as adults.

History of Studio Ghibli The studio was a gift from legendary filmmakers Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata, along with producer Toshio Suzuki. It was founded in 1985 in Tokyo with the aim of reshaping animation. But have you ever thought why they chose the name "Ghibli"? It is said that the term is derived from an Italian word linked with a hot desert wind, which basically represents the idea of bringing a fresh current into the anime industry.
There has been a growth in the number of true crime documentaries and serial killer shows on OTT platforms in recent years, and they have become one of the biggest entertainment trends for viewers. Whether it's Mindhunter, Dahmer, Delhi Crime, or Raakh, millions of viewers willingly spend hours watching stories about violent crimes.

But have you ever wondered why people are so fascinated by the darkest side of human behaviour? And does enjoying such content reveal something about your personality? WION spoke to experts to understand the psychology behind this ever-growing obsession and how our brains are hard-wired to be attracted to things like crime, mystery and danger and whether binge-watching them can affect our mental health.

Why are we so obsessed with true crime?

True crime isn’t just about violence; it’s about people and solving puzzles. As per Saikishore, Clinical Psychologist, Aster Whitefield Hospital, "People tend to be very interested in true crime because it combines mystery, psychology, and real human behaviour." He explains that such stories provide the audience with an opportunity to explore questions like why do people commit crimes? What methods do police use to solve complicated cases? Also, what are the factors leading to an individual's extreme actions? "From a psychological point of view, humans are naturally drawn to danger and survival information. True crime material acts as a means of safely understanding dangerous situations without any risk of one's own. Also, many are moved by the narrative element of these stories, which bring out themes of justice, courage, and the suffering of victims and their families."

Also Read: Emotionally abandoned, not empty: The single parents left behind to fight a rigged game of love

Adding to this, Dr. Megha Agarwal, Consultant Psychiatrist, Kailash Deepak Hospital, says people don't just watch these shows for entertainment.

True crime and serial killer dramas

"The honest answer is: both, and they are rarely separable. Most viewers begin with entertainment, drawn by suspense and narrative tension, but the brain quietly absorbs real information along the way. Psychologists call this incidental learning. People pick up patterns about predatory behavior, warning signs in relationships, and how investigations unfold without ever sitting down to study," she said.

Emotions play a key role

Every good crime story takes viewers through a range of emotions, from curiosity and suspense to fear, shock, and finally relief. "Crime stories and dramas usually bring out a mix of feelings in people. Mostly, it is curiosity that gets the strongest, because audiences want to know the whole story, what happened and why. Besides curiosity, one can also experience suspense fear anxiety, or shock in when the story has unexpected twists or unpleasant details," Saikishore added.

Also Read: Zendaya’s jaw-dropping Spider-Man: Brand New Day press tour looks

However, a lot of viewers also sympathize with the victims and their families. People get their cases solved or justice done, with which they feel relieved and satisfied. "This whole cycle of emotions - getting from not knowing to finding out - is one of the reasons why crime stories attract our attention."

What does the habit show about your personality?

Many people wonder if enjoying stories about serial killers means they have a darker side. According to experts, that's a myth.

"To enjoy true crime stories doesn't really imply that a person is aggressive or secretly enjoys violence. Mostly, it just means that they are curious, interested in human psychology, and want to know how complicated situations work," Saikishore explains.

Dr. Agarwal agrees that curiosity plays a major role. She says many viewers develop what psychologists call incidental learning, where they unknowingly absorb information while simply trying to be entertained.

However, she also warns that watching many documentaries can sometimes create a false sense of expertise about criminal behaviour.

Also Read: Why Kidney stone cases rise sharply in summer - and how to protect yourself

Why serial killers become the centre of attention

Perhaps the biggest draw of true crime is trying to understand people who commit unimaginable acts.

Dr. Agarwal explains, "Serial killers represent something deeply paradoxical: they are human beings who violated the most fundamental social contract. That paradox is psychologically irresistible."

She says people are naturally wired to understand other minds, especially when someone's behaviour seems impossible to explain. This curiosity is also linked to what researchers call morbid curiosity, the desire to understand the darker side of human nature from a safe distance.

Saikishore adds that mystery itself keeps people invested. "Humans have evolved a survival mechanism that involves paying special attention to possible threats. Since identifying danger was crucial to survival, stories about crime, risk, and uncertainty automatically draw attention. But mystery makes even more interesting because the brain loves to find answers and resolve questions that are left open."

Also Read: International Yoga Day 2026: How India took an ancient practice to the UN

Do men and women watch true crime differently?

“Research has consistently shown that women consume true crime content at significantly higher rates than men,” says Dr. Agarwal. She explains that many women unconsciously view these stories as lessons in personal safety, looking for warning signs and victim behaviour. Men, on the other hand, are often more drawn to the investigative side of cases, including forensic science and solving the mystery. While these are broad patterns, both groups are fascinated by understanding extraordinary human behaviour.

When does binge-watching become unhealthy? True crime is entertaining, but experts say that too much exposure to violent content can affect your mental well-being.

Dr. Agarwal says, "Yes, and this is one of the more underappreciated effects of heavy true crime consumption. The brain does not draw a clean line between a story and a real threat."

She warns that constant exposure can leave people feeling anxious, hyper-alert, or fearful in everyday situations. Difficulty sleeping, repeatedly checking locks, distrusting strangers, or feeling unsafe in ordinary places may all be signs that it's time to take a break.

Welcome To The Jungle is fun, but here's why the original Welcome remains iconic

Welcome To The Jungle review: When the trailer of Welcome To The Jungle was unveiled, I had only one question in mind: could the film manage to give enough screen space to all the iconic actors it had assembled? Directed by Ahmed Khan, the action-comedy is the third instalment in the Welcome franchise, which has remained a fan favourite since the first film was released in 2007.

While that question lingers throughout its runtime, one thing becomes clear almost immediately: the film has no intention of playing it safe. Penned by the late Neeraj Vora, Welcome To The Jungle embraces complete madness, packing its narrative with slapstick humour, nostalgia, meta references and a never-ending parade of familiar faces rather than chasing logic or realism.

Welcome To The Jungle plot

The story begins with a corrupt businessman who plans to convert his black money into legitimate losses by producing a ₹2,000 crore film that is guaranteed to flop. To execute the plan, his trusted aide Dubey (Johny Lever) suggests choosing the worst possible filmmaking team, helmed by flop filmmakers Dev (Paresh Rawal) and Das (Rajpal Yadav). The cast and crew of the fake film consists of Nainsukh (Shreyas Talpade), partially blind cinematographer, actor Rajiv (Akshay Kumar), a once-successful Bollywood star who now acts in Bhojpuri films, his former girlfriend Nadia (Disha Patani), and gangsters Romeo (Arshad Warsi) and Yeda Anna (Suniel Shetty), who are a part of the cast because Dev and Das failed to repay the money they owe them.

Also Read: Akshay Kumar has THIS request for critics ahead of Welcome to the Jungle release

To further inflate the budget, several other actors, including Krushna Abhishek, Kiku Sharda and Daler Mehndi, have been signed for the doomed production.

Filming begins and just when everything appears to be going according to plan, the team lands in a remote village due to a sudden twist. Unknown to them, the region is a target of terrorists led by Zatara (Jackie Shroff), assisted by Abdullah (Aftab Shivdasani) and Ghoni (Vindu Dara Singh).

Then enter the villagers, including Raveena Tandon, Farida Jalal and Kiran Kumar, who mistake the arriving film crew for genuine Indian Army personnel, as everyone is already dressed in military uniforms. The terrorists make the same assumption, and a series of misunderstandings, and chaos begins.

From this point onwards, the film goes far away from reality, and the cast finds itself using heavy artillery, crossing borders, fighting terrorists, having emotional reunions and somehow landing near the India-Pakistan border. The story rarely takes time to explain how any of this is happening, and perhaps that's exactly the point.

Also Read: Welcome to the Jungle gets UA 16+ certificate after 18 cuts

What works in the film

I genuinely must appreciate the honesty of the film as it refuses to apologise for its absurdity. It knows it is loud, silly and completely over-the-top, and never attempts to cover those things with sophistication.

The comedy in Welcome To The Jungle is because of the chaos rather than clever plotting. Almost every major character has an amusing personality quirk. Shreyas Talpade's cinematographer is partially blind, Johny Lever's Dubey struggles with his speech, Suniel Shetty's gangster constantly forgets words, Farida Jalal communicates through incomprehensible murmurs, and so on. These recurring traits create several genuinely funny moments.

The nostalgia factor also works at several moments in the film. References to Welcome, Hera Pheri, Mahabharat and several classic Bollywood films frequently pop up. Though not every callback is equally funny, Bollywood fans will surely appreciate many of the meta jokes and self-aware humour.

Several comic exchanges between Akshay Kumar, Paresh Rawal, Suniel Shetty, Arshad Warsi and Johny Lever bring laughs.

Another point that needs to be highlighted is that despite featuring a large ensemble cast, the film shockingly doesn't appear cluttered most of the time.

While the situations remain ridiculous, Akshay Kumar handles both comedy and action scenes with ease. The outdoor locations, production design, and overall visual appeal is good.

What makes the film entertaining is that many jokes genuinely land despite the paper-thin story. If the audience stops thinking about the logic and just enjoys the madness, the cinema hall will be packed with laughter.

What doesn't work

While the scale and jokes entertain, the storytelling is where the film stumbles, and as expected, due to the enormous cast, many actors contribute very little except their presence.

Several familiar faces appear in scene after scene without giving meaningful dialogue or character development. It often feels as though they were included simply because the film wanted as many celebrities as possible.

Also Read: Welcome to the Jungle trailer: Akshay Kumar's wildest franchise chapter yet arrives with Bollywood's biggest ensemble

And yes, it is an Akshay Kumar film and the actor naturally dominates the narrative, leaving little room for everyone else. Only Suniel Shetty, Arshad Warsi and Jackie Shroff receive decent material, but performers like Krushna Abhishek, Kiku Sharda, Tusshar Kapoor, Jacqueline Fernandez, Disha Patani and several others are mostly underutilised.

The screenplay struggles with consistency, as the first half takes time to establish its absurd premise, while the second half stretches far longer than needed. There are a lot of songs that interrupt the momentum, making the film longer.

As I said earlier, there's literally no logic in the whole film. Characters suddenly turn from struggling actors into trained fighters capable of taking on terrorists.

The most bizarre part was when the narrative suddenly jumped from a jungle village to border conflict and patriotic drama. The emotional portions also fail to create any impact.

Personally, I felt Akshay Kumar's double role was unnecessary as the film already contains more than enough characters.

Additionally, not all references to older films work, as a few seem inserted only for nostalgia with no connection to the story.

Also Read: Welcome To The Jungle teaser out: Akshay Kumar returns with full-on chaos, check release date

Welcome To The Jungle cast performances

Akshay Kumar is in the spotlight till the credits roll. There's no doubt that Akshay handles comic timing, physical comedy, and action sequences brilliantly- he is one of the best comic actors in Bollywood.

Suniel Shetty and Arshad Warsi's chemistry, banter and comic timing are also praiseworthy. Paresh Rawal and Rajpal Yadav also mark their presence despite the crowded ensemble.

Johny Lever delivers exactly what audiences expect from him, while Shreyas Talpade also adds humour wherever possible.

Jackie Shroff does justice to the role of terrorist leader Zatara, though the character itself borders on caricature. Farida Jalal turns out to be one of the film's pleasant surprises, while Raveena Tandon lends sincerity despite being saddled with repetitive character traits.

Disha Patani, Jacqueline Fernandez, Lara Dutta, Tusshar Kapoor, Aftab Shivdasani, Krushna Abhishek, Kiku Sharda, Daler Mehndi, Mukesh Tiwari, Yashpal Sharma and several others remain largely underused despite their considerable screen presence.

Verdict

Welcome To The Jungle is not for people who are looking for logic, realism, a screenplay and even a storyline. Several characters exist only for star value. But Ahmed Khan makes sure to compensate for these things with a load of slapstick comedy, action, nostalgia, and meta humour. The mass entertainer has jokes in almost every scene, and surprisingly, most of them bring laughs.

It is a complete brain-rot comedy that never asks its audience to think too hard. If you are planning to watch the film, go for nostalgia, humour, madness, and the familiar faces, and you will enjoy the absurdity.

Welcome To The Jungle, starring an ensemble cast led by Akshay Kumar, is this week's big Bollywood release. Directed by Ahmed Khan, the mass-entertainer is a complete brain-rot comedy that brings laughs if you don't think about logic or storytelling.

Welcome To The Jungle plot The story begins with a corrupt businessman who plans to convert his black money into legitimate losses by producing a ₹2,000 crore film that is guaranteed to flop. Also Read: Akshay Kumar has THIS request for critics ahead of Welcome to the Jungle release To further inflate the budget, several other actors, including Krushna Abhishek, Kiku Sharda and Daler Mehndi, have been signed for the doomed production.

Welcome To The Jungle, starring an ensemble cast led by Akshay Kumar, is this week's big Bollywood release. Directed by Ahmed Khan, the mass-entertainer is a complete brain-rot comedy that brings laughs if you don't think about logic or storytelling. Here's the film's review.

Welcome To The Jungle movie review: Akshay Kumar's star-studded comedy delivers laughs, but not much logic

After a long wait of five years, Emraan Hashmi is all set to return to the horror genre with Rooh. On June 23, the makers announced the film with an eerie teaser, sparking a wave of excitement among fans. Over the years, the actor has explored several films that revolved around haunted houses, psychology, cursed spirits, witchcraft and paranormal mysteries. But have you ever wondered why Hashmi is often regarded as one of Hindi cinema's most reliable horror stars? Let's find out.

Hashmi relationship with horror

The actor has had a long connection with horror, which began with Raaz, and he has often described his connection with the genre as a long-running love affair. Though he became a household name through romantic dramas such as Tumsa Nahin Dekha, Zeher and Aashiq Banaya Aapne, true Emraan Hashmi fans know horror offered him something different as an actor.

Also Read: Awarapan 2: Emraan Hashmi starrer goes on floors, filming begins in Bangkok

Over the years, he has spoken about his personal fascination with supernatural stories and revealed that projects like Raaz 2 and Ek Thi Daayan fulfilled a long-standing desire to work in films that genuinely frightened audiences.

Raaz: The Mystery Continues

It is true that he has taken temporary shifts from the genre, but the actor repeatedly found himself returning to it. According to Hashmi, good stories and filmmakers willing to push boundaries have always drawn him back.

And the arrival of Rooh seems like another chapter in his journey.

Why horror works well for Hashmi?

Hashmi's horror films do not show the protagonists as Bollywood hero who defeats evil with confidence; his characters are rather vulnerable and conflicted, who make mistakes. Whether playing a man haunted by unnatural visions or a character trapped within dark folklore, his performances often focus on fear, guilt, obsession and emotional trauma.

Additionally, you will find a lot more than jump scares in his horror thrillers, such as psychological issues, childhood trauma, possession, paranoia and moral ambiguity.

The actor has previously spoken that horror remains relatively underexplored in India, despite the interest of the audience.

Also Read: Emraan Hashmi's 'serial kisser' image was deliberate PR plan, reveals former publicist

Padma Shri awardee Mohammad Ali Baig has dedicated most of his life to theatre, preserving and embracing India's cultural heritage. He is a celebrated theatre practitioner, actor, director and film-maker, and is best known for pioneering heritage theatre productions that bring history alive in iconic locations across Hyderabad and beyond.

Now, Baig is all set to release his next film, Chaand Tara, which is based on the legendary story of Taramati from the Golconda Kingdom. The film touches upon the themes of art, devotion and cultural heritage and recently garnered international acclaim after its screening at Bharat Pavilion during the Cannes Film Festival.

WION caught up with Mohammad Ali Baig ahead of the film’s release to talk about his journey in theatre, filmmaking and why he continues to bring historical stories to the audience.

Also Read: Tumbbad was shot across four monsoons; For Tumbbad 2, the team is doing something even crazier

WION: You grew up in one of India's most celebrated theatre families. What are your earliest memories of watching your father, Qadir Ali Baig, at work?

Mohammad Ali Baig: He was my childhood hero. Absolutely handsome, charismatic, stylish, impeccably dressed—a rider, a polo player, a man with a baritone voice and perfect etiquette. I wanted to grow up like him. My childhood and adolescence were spent in that hero worship.

There wasn't much pressure on academics, but there was immense emphasis on culture, upbringing and etiquette. We were raised with strict Asif Jahi and Nizamian court manners. The strict decorum shaped me into a disciplined adult, a disciplined theatre maker and now, perhaps, a disciplined filmmaker.

Another important influence was growing up backstage. I spent my childhood in theatre wings and makeup rooms. I witnessed how a play evolved from a script into a production and also saw the struggles behind it—the emotional investment, the financial challenges and the sacrifices.

People often assume I got everything on a platter. I was born in a 250-year-old heritage palace spread across nearly a hundred acres, surrounded by horses, orchards and an insulated lifestyle. I had more ponies to play with than toys. But after my father's passing, the theatre exposed me to entirely different realities and people from diverse social backgrounds. The journey from a feudal upbringing to a democratic adulthood was transformative. It helped me understand life beyond privilege.

WION: Your autobiographical play Under An Oak Tree explores living under the shadow of a towering legacy. How difficult was it to carve out your own identity?

Mohammad Ali Baig: Because of the looming legacy of being Qadir Ali Baig's son, I actually ran away from theatre. I moved into advertising, started making ad films and stayed away from Hyderabad for nearly fifteen years. I made films in seven countries that were telecast in 72 countries and won around 40 awards. Returning to the theatre later felt like coming home, and that's exactly what Under An Oak Tree explores.

The play examines the privileges, insecurities and emotional complexities of being born under such a towering legacy. It was easier to create my own identity in advertising because there were no expectations attached to me. My flair for design helped me build a career there, while my theatre upbringing gave me an advantage.

When I eventually returned to the theatre, however, the weight of that legacy was waiting for me. It still is. If I cannot measure up, then I shouldn't be doing what he did.

Also Read: Padma Awards 2026: Mammootty and R Madhavan honoured By President Droupadi Murmu

WION: What keeps you motivated after decades in the performing arts?

Mohammad Ali Baig: Performing arts, especially theatre, are a legacy and a responsibility.

What motivates me is paying tribute to Baba, paying tribute to the heroes of the Deccan and paying tribute to the glorious city of Hyderabad where I was born and continue to live.

The challenges of theatre motivate me. The legacy inspires and guides me. People often think I've had everything handed to me, but I had to work hard to expand my father's audience base of 350 people into an audience of nearly 1,500 today.

WION: What first drew you to the story of Taramati, and why did you feel it deserved to be retold?

Mohammad Ali Baig: Taramati is one of the most fascinating legends of Deccan history. If you look at the Taj Mahal, it was built by Emperor Shah Jahan for his queen because he could afford to do so. Charminar was built by Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah for Bhagmati. But Taramati Baradari was built by Sultan Abdullah Qutb Shah in memory of Taramati—a woman who was neither his queen, nor his mistress, nor a romantic interest.

That intrigued me when I first visited Taramati Baradari after being commissioned to create a production around the monument. I was struck by the idea that she must have been an artist of extraordinary stature for a ruler to immortalise her in a monument that still stands more than three centuries later.

She was also a woman ahead of her time. She refused to become a court singer. She declined the security and prestige of royal patronage because she believed her art was her worship and did not wish to limit it to any court or ruler.

That spirit inspired me deeply. For Chaand Tara, I fictionalised and dramatised aspects of the legend, taking cinematic liberties while exploring her relationship with Sultan Abdullah and her unwavering commitment to artistic freedom.

How does cinema allow you to expand that mission?

Mohammad Ali Baig: Carrying the heritage aspect of my theatre into cinema felt like a natural progression. For over two decades, I have staged heritage productions at some of the world's most respected venues and arts festivals. Those experiences provided a strong foundation.

When it came to Chaand Tara, much of the research, understanding and artistic approach had already been developed through my theatre work. Cinema simply gave me a larger canvas to tell these stories.

WION: How different was the experience of bringing a historical narrative alive on screen compared to on stage?

Mohammad Ali Baig: For me, bringing history to the screen was actually easier. I've made around 500 advertising films around the world, and advertising teaches you that you can make anything compelling because the product itself is the hero. That experience gives you confidence in visual storytelling.

Theatre is far less forgiving. Everything happens in real time. Mistakes cannot be hidden. On stage, especially in forts and palaces where I often perform, you are constantly battling logistics, weather and technical limitations.

Cinema, on the other hand, allows for refinement. You can revisit scenes, improve them and use technology to enhance the final result. I enjoyed the process immensely and was fortunate to work with a team that trusted my vision completely. Whether it was the actors, musicians, cinematographer, editor or technical crew, everyone believed in the project. That trust allowed us to create what I believe is a beautiful piece of cinema.

Also Read: R Madhavan honoured with Padma Shri; touches PM Modi's feet

WION: Is there a dream project that you still haven't accomplished?

Mohammad Ali Baig: I'm not sure I've ever fully understood what a dream is. I've come this far without a fixed ambition. I never wanted to be on stage, never wanted to be on screen, never planned to be on OTT platforms. I consider myself an accidental actor and an accidental director.

I've simply enjoyed the journey and remain grateful to the Almighty, to Baba's legacy and to my mother, Begum Razia Baig, whose support has guided me throughout these years as chairperson of the Qadir Ali Baig Theatre Foundation.

I may not have had a grand ambition, but I have always been focused. I treat theatre with the seriousness that a doctor, architect or bureaucrat brings to their profession. For me, the process is 90 percent planning and 10 percent execution. By the time I step onto a stage or onto a film set, the groundwork is already complete. I arrive prepared to execute the vision, and the results reflect that discipline.

Padma Shri awardee Mohammad Ali Baig has embraced India's cultural heritage through theatres for years. He is currently gearing up for the release of his upcoming film Chaand Tara, inspired by the tale of Taramati from the Golconda Kingdom.

'I've come so far without an ambition': Mohammad Ali Baig on taking Hyderabad's forgotten stories to the world

Many viewers are surprised by the return of India's Got Latent. The second season has been released on both YouTube and Netflix, marking a major comeback for the show that was once India's biggest digital entertainment controversy. But did the Season 1 backlash actually damage or help Samay Raina? Let's find out.

The rise of India's Got Latent and backlash

India's Got Latent was launched in 2024, and unlike the regular shows, it was filled with stand-up comedy, roasting, and unconventional acts. Within no time, it built a cult following and the clips of episodes went viral on social media. By early 2025, India's Got Latent had become one of the most talked-about shows.

Also Read: India's Got Latent 2 lands on Netflix; New Samay Raina special announced

But the turning point came during an episode that featured podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia (BeerBiceps). During the show, Allahbadia asked a contestant a sexually explicit "would you rather" question involving parents.

A clip from the episode quickly took over the internet and triggered widespread criticism from audiences, activists, and public figures. As per many, the content crossed the line between edgy humour and offensive vulgarity.

The controversy further led to complaints filed in multiple states against several individuals associated with the episode, including Samay Raina, Ranveer Allahbadia, Ashish Chanchlani, and Apoorva Mukhija.

Also Read: India’s Got Latent on Netflix?
