In a rare move, North Korea's ambassador appeared at the UN Security Council on Monday (Nov 27) and defended his country's launch of a spy rocket satellite, calling it an act of self-defence.

This came after North Korean leader Kim Jong Un inspected the photos of "major target regions", including that of the White House and Pentagon.

Countries like South Korea and Japan have said that Pyongyang breached Security Council resolutions by launching the spy satellite earlier this week.

North Korea earlier said that its latest satellite has captured and sent across images of major US and South Korean military sites, as well as photos of the Italian capital Rome.&nbsp;

As per the state-run KCNA news agency, the satellite took "in detail" images of the White House and the Pentagon in Washington which Kim later studied.

The report further said that he had also counted the number of aircraft carriers at a military base and a shipyard in the neighbouring state of Virginia.

North Korea's ambassador to the United Nations, Kim Song, at the Security Council, expressed disappointment over no other country facing restrictions over satellites.

"No other nation in the world is in the security environment as critical as the DPRK," said Kim, using the North's official name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

"One belligerent party, the United States, is threatening us with a nuclear weapon," he said.

"It is a legitimate right for the DPRK as another belligerent party to develop, test, manufacture and possess weapons systems equivalent to those that the United States possesses or is developing."

The US ambassador, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, rebuffed North Korea's claim that it was acting in self-defence and said that joint US-South Korean exercises were "routine" and "defensive in nature".

"We intentionally reduce risk and pursue transparency by announcing the exercises in advance including the dates and the activities, unlike the DPRK," she said, adding that the drills did not violate Security Council resolutions.

The United States on Monday (Nov 27) hailed the extension of the truce between Israel and the Palestinian group Hamas by two days and said that it was optimistic about the humanitarian pause being continued for longer.

"Of course, we welcome the announcement," White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told reporters after mediator Qatar said the initial four-day truce was to be lengthened.

"We would of course hope to see the pause extended further, and that will depend upon Hamas continuing to release hostages."

Earlier, the Palestinian militant group had promised that it would release another 20 women and children that it had held hostage in the Gaza Strip over the next two days.

Kirby also expressed hope that the truce could turn into a more permanent ceasefire in Gaza.

"I won't speak for the Israeli Defense Forces, but when these pauses are over, they have made it very clear that they're going to continue to target Hamas leadership," Kirby said.

He then said that US President Joe Biden was optimistic about his efforts to accelerate the humanitarian assistance going into Gaza and also his approach towards facilitating the release of hostages.&nbsp;

Biden took to his official X handle on Monday (Nov 27) and said that he would continue to stay in touch with leaders of Qatar, Egypt, and Israel to ensure that every aspect of the deal was implemented.&nbsp;

An earthquake of magnitude 6.5 hit northern Papua New Guinea in the early hours on Tuesday (Nov 28), the US Geological Survey said.

The epicentre of the quake, which occurred at 8:46 am local time, is said to be determined at an estimated depth of 12 kilometres (seven miles) as per the USGS.

The earthquake struck about 20 kilometres (12 miles) off the coast, a short distance from the town of Wewak, the capital of the Pacific island state's East Sepik Province.&nbsp;

The trade bill includes language that the two countries will "promote" carbon pricing and mitigation, but does not have conditions that compel such a plan.

"To see the Conservative Party of Canada decide not to support Ukraine with something they need with the absurd excuse that it's because Ukraine is going to put a price on pollution is ridiculous," Trudeau told reporters in French at a news conference in Newfoundland.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un examined the pictures of "major target regions" that were taken by his new spy rocket satellite, state media reported on Saturday (Nov 25).

These regions included South Korea's capital Seoul and all the other cities that host US military bases.

Kim inspected the shots, along with other imagery captured of some areas within North Korea, during his visit to the control centre of the National Aerospace Technology Administration (NATA) in Pyongyang on Friday (Nov 24), reported state news agency KCNA.

The pictures were taken as the satellite passed over the peninsula on Friday morning, said KCNA, which included captures of Seoul, and Mokpo, Kunsan, Pyeongtaek, Osan, where US and South Korean military bases are located.

"The NATA reported to Kim Jong Un on the plan for photographing the region of South Korean puppets and the additional fine-tuning process of the reconnaissance satellite," the report said. That process would continue on Saturday, it said.&nbsp;

On Tuesday, Kim reviewed photographs of major US military bases in Guam.&nbsp;

State-run news agency KCNA said that Kim "watched the aerospace photos of Anderson Air Force Base, Apra Harbor and other major military bases of the US forces taken in the sky above Guam in the Pacific, which were received at 9:21 am on Nov 22".&nbsp;

Israel on Friday (Nov 24) freed 39 Palestinian women and children from prisons in exchange for the first wave of hostages released by the Hamas in Gaza.

The detainees were welcomed by cheering crowds across the West Bank and some marching in the street carrying Palestinian flags.

A few of them also carried the flag of the Hamas group amid chants&nbsp;in support of Abu Ubaida, the spokesperson of the group's armed wing.

"I am happy but my liberation came at the price of the blood of the martyrs," said Marah Bakir, 24, referring to the nearly 15,000 deaths across the Gaza Strip that its Hamas-led government says were caused by Israel's military offensive.

Freedom from "the four walls of the prison" is "magnificent", said Bakir, who had been in custody for eight years.

Nearly more than 100 Palestinian prisoners are scheduled to be released over the coming four days and more may be released if the truce is extended.

The Israeli Defense Forces has received a second list of hostages who will be released by the Palestinian militant group Hamas on Saturday (Nov 25) under a truce deal, the office of Israel's prime minister wrote in a statement on Friday.

Expressing concern for the hostages released, the US president said that the ones held captive by Hamas went through a very hard time and that it was the start of a long journey for them towards healing.

"All of these hostages have been through a terrible ordeal and this is the beginning of a long journey of healing for them," he added.

Biden, who had helmed US efforts to secure the release of the hostages and also put a pause to the brutal conflict between Israel and Hamas militants, said, "Today has been a product a lot of hard work and weeks of personal engagement. From the moment Hamas kidnapped these people, I, along with my team, have worked around the clock to secure the release. The next hearing in the case is expected soon with a slight possibility of the court passing a judgement.

The original judgement was passed by the Court of First Instance of Qatar on October 26 to eight men&nbsp;who worked for the Dahra Global Technologies and Consultancy Services, almost a year after they were arrested in August 2022.

Qatar court accepts Indian sailors' appeal, next hearing expected soon

Biden and Qatar Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani "committed to remain in close contact to ensure the deal is fully implemented," the White House said in a readout of the call.

"They reiterated the importance of protecting civilian lives, respecting international humanitarian law and increasing and sustaining humanitarian assistance to Palestinians in Gaza," it said.

Biden also spoke to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and assured him his country's support in securing the release of all the remaining hostages.

"The President further emphasized the importance of maintaining calm along the Lebanese border as well as in the West Bank," the White House said.

US President Joe Biden expresses hope about Gaza hostage release

A woman has accused New York City Mayor Eric Adams of sexually assaulting her nearly 30 years ago, US media reported on Thursday (Nov 23).

The civil suit claims that the plaintiff "was sexually assaulted by Defendant Eric Adams in New York, New York in 1993 while they both worked for the City of New York".

In the filing, the accuser, whose identity has not been revealed, is seeking a trial and at least $5 million in relief, reported news agency AFP citing The Messenger.

Adams has "vigorously" denied the accusation saying that he does not even remember meeting the plaintiff and that he wouldn't ever do anything to cause anyone physical harm.

"The mayor does not know who this person is. If they ever met, he doesn't recall it," a City hall spokesperson said in a statement.

"But he would never do anything to physically harm another person and vigorously denies any such claim."

The suit was submitted under the New York Adult Survivors Act, a law that was passed last year and opened a one-year window for sexual assault claims to be filed, which otherwise happened too far in the past to sue. The window expires on Friday.

Former police officer Adams took office in January 2022 as New York's second Black mayor in the history of the United States.

Earlier, a sexual assault lawsuit was also filed against Gun N' Roses lead singer Axl Rose, where the plaintiff accused him of sexually assaulting her in the year 1989.

The accuser who is an actress and a model has alleged that Rose (61) "sexually assaulted her". She also said that she "did not consent and felt overpowered".&nbsp;

The civil case was filed on Wednesday (November 22). It calls for Rose to face a jury trial and award the victim "punitive damages".

"Rose used his fame, status, and power as a celebrity and performer in the music industry to gain access to manipulate, control and violently assault Kennedy," the complaint claims.
