United States President Joe Biden on Tuesday (Dec 5) said he may have skipped next year's re-election bid had it not been for facing his rival Donald Trump, stating that the Republican posed a rare threat to the country.&nbsp;

"If Trump wasn't running, I'm not sure I'd be running. But we cannot let him win," the 81-year-old Democrat told a 2024 election campaign fundraiser in Weston, Massachusetts.

He then appreciated former Republican lawmaker Liz Cheney for standing up against Trump, who on Sunday (Dec 3) had warned that the United States would be "sleepwalking into dictatorship" if the twice-impeached former president resumes power.

During the event, he also highlighted Atlantic magazine recapitulating what it stated were the dangers posed by Trump's second term, one of three major US media outlets to issue similar warnings in recent days along with the Washington Post and New York Times.&nbsp;

Earlier, during a fundraiser in Boston, Biden had mentioned Trump's usage of harsh words during his campaign trail, which also included an instance where he called his opponents "vermin".&nbsp;

Biden said that his extreme language demonstrated the intense vocabulary used in Germany during the 1930s when Adolf Hitler's Nazis were on the rise.

"Trump's not even hiding the ball anymore. He's telling us what he's going to do," Biden said. "He's making no bones about it."

Biden's comments came after Democratic supporters repeatedly expressed concerns over his age after he turned 81 years old last month.

In a groundbreaking achievement, ISRO has successfully returned the Propulsion Module (PM) of the Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft, which was initially intended for lunar operations, into the Earth's orbit after surpassing its lunar mission objectives.

Following the lunar hop by Vikram (lander), this was another accomplishment that shows that ISRO can restart engines on the moon and operate equipment, both of which were not foreseen, the national space agency stated in a release.

"In another unique experiment, like the hop experiment on the Vikram Lander, the Propulsion Module (PM) of Chandrayaan-3 was moved from an orbit around the Moon to an orbit around Earth," the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) stated in its official release.

The preliminary goal of India's first successful lunar landing mission was to establish a soft landing near the lunar south polar region and conduct experimentations using the tools onboard the lander 'Vikram' and rover 'Pragyaan'.

The spacecraft was launched on July 14, 2023, on board the LVM3-M4 vehicle from SDSC, SHAR.

It made its touchdown on the surface of the moon on Aug 23, after which it was deployed to survey the unexplored lunar south pole.

Initially, the space agency had planned to operate this payload for nearly three months during the mission life of PM. However, it was later decided to utilise the remaining fuel in the Propulsion Module to derive additional information for the lunar missions to be carried out in the future.

"First maneuver was performed on October 9, 2023, to raise apolune altitude to 5112 km from 150 km thus, increasing the period of orbit from 2.1 hrs to 7.2 hrs. Later, considering the estimate of available propellant, the second manoeuvre plan was revised to target an Earth orbit of 1.8 lakhs x 3.8 lakhs km. The Trans-Earthinjection (TEI)maneuver was performed on October 13, 2023. In the post-TEI manoeuvre realized orbit, the propulsion module made four Moon fly-bys before departing Moon SOI on November 10," ISRO said.

ISRO brings back Chandrayaan-3 Propulsion Module to Earth's orbit

An intense air offensive by Israel struck the south of the Gaza Strip on Monday (Dec 4) claiming the lives of dozens of Palestinians and wounding others.

At the United Nations, Secretary-General Antonio Guterres appealed to Israel to avoid further action that would worsen the already alarming humanitarian situation in Gaza.

"For people ordered to evacuate, there is nowhere safe to go and very little to survive on," UN&nbsp;spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said.

The United States also indicated that it expects Israel to avoid attacking areas that Israeli authorities have identified as "no-strike" zones in Gaza.

White House deputy national security adviser Jon Finer on Monday (Dec 4) led a US delegation to India's capital New Delhi where he discussed forming an investigative panel in order to probe an alleged foiled plot to assassinate Khalistani separatist and leader of the banned Sikhs For Justice (SFJ) outfit Gurpatwant Singh Pannun.

"Mr Finer acknowledged India's establishment of a Committee of Enquiry to investigate lethal plotting in the United States and the importance of holding accountable anyone found responsible," the White House said in a statement.

This comes after New Delhi last week reiterated that it will be guided by the results of a high-level panel set up to probe the alleged assassination attempt.

The United States, last week, had charged Indian national Nikhil Gupta with murder-for-hire over a conspiracy to assassinate Pannun, who is a dual citizen of America and Canada, the US attorney's office in Manhattan said in a statement.

US Attorney Damian Williams announced charges against Gupta, who was arrested by Czech authorities in the month of June this year in conformance to the bilateral extradition treaty between the United States and the Czech Republic.

Senior US official discusses alleged foiled plot to kill Pannun during visit to India

The United States on Monday (Dec 4) expanded its visa restriction policy for Ugandan officials involved in undermining democracy and repressing marginalized groups in Uganda.

It also unveiled a new policy for officials in Zimbabwe.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken released a statement saying that the US would refuse visas to current or former officials along with their family members in case they are found to be involved in "repressing members of marginalized or vulnerable populations" like the LGBT community.

"Today, I am announcing the expansion of the visa restriction policy to include current or former Ugandan officials or others who are believed to be responsible for, or complicit in, undermining the democratic process in Uganda or for policies or actions aimed at repressing members of marginalized or vulnerable populations," Blinken said on Monday.

"These groups include, but are not limited to, environmental activists, human rights defenders, journalists, LGBTQI+ persons, and civil society organizers," he said.

"I once again strongly encourage the government of Uganda to make concerted efforts to uphold democracy and to respect and protect human rights so that we may sustain the decades-long partnership between our countries that has benefited Americans and Ugandans alike," he added.

Uganda's anti-LGBTQ law, which is considered one of the harshest in the world, carries the death penalty for "aggravated homosexuality" in certain circumstances.

US restricts visas for Uganda officials over harsh law against homosexuality

The White House officials on Monday (Dec 5) warned congressional leaders that halting the military aid to Kyiv would let Russian President Vladimir Putin "prevail" in Moscow's invasion of Ukraine.

"Congress has to decide whether to continue to support the fight for freedom in Ukraine as part of the 50-nation coalition that President (Joe) Biden has built or... ignore the lessons we've learned from history and let Putin prevail," National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan told reporters at the White House.

Niger's military leaders said Monday that they were ending two European Union security and defence missions in the country, after earlier in the day agreeing to strengthen military cooperation with Russia.&nbsp;

The Nigerien foreign ministry said that it was ending the agreement between Niger and the EU regarding the Niamey-based civilian capacity-building mission called EUCAP Sahel Niger.&nbsp;

The mission, launched in 2012, supports Niger's internal security forces, authorities and non-governmental actors.&nbsp;

Niger's foreign ministry also announced in a press statement the "withdrawal by the State of Niger of consent for the deployment of an EU military partnership mission" in Niger.

The military partnership known as EUMPM was launched in February "at the request of the Nigerien authorities", according to the EU Council website.

It was designed to "enhance the ability of the Niger Armed Forces to contain the terrorist threat," the website said.

The West African nation is battling two jihadist insurgencies -- a spillover in its southeast from a long-running conflict in neighbouring Nigeria, and an offensive in the west by militants crossing from Mali and Burkina Faso.

The country has been ruled by military leaders since the overthrow of elected President Mohamed Bazoum in July, which prompted international condemnation.&nbsp;

The Israeli military, on being asked about the deaths, said that it was "verifying" the details.

It said that the army personnel did carry an overnight raid in the Jenin refugee camp which it said "killed two high-ranking terrorists".

Out of the two, one was wanted over connection with attacks that claimed the lives of Israelis or wounded them.

Meanwhile, Hamas claimed that a ten-month-old hostage, Kfir Babis was killed along with two family members in an alleged Israeli airstrike before the truce.&nbsp;

Hamas' armed wing Al-Qassam Brigades made the claims, to which Israel reacted saying that it is still verifying the reports. The militant group failed to provide any evidence supporting its claims over the killing of the baby.&nbsp;

The Palestinian militant group further stated that the baby's mother, 30-year-old mother Shiri Silberman-Babis and four-year-old brother Ariel, were also killed in the Israeli bombardment.

The Israeli army said that it is investigating the reports. It released a statement saying that it was "verifying the accuracy of the information."

"Hamas is endangering the lives of all the hostages in the Gaza Strip, which includes nine children, and is responsible for their security," an IDF statement said.&nbsp;
