The chiefs of the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and Israel's Mossad on Tuesday (Nov 28) met Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed Bin Abdulrahman al-Thani in Doha and held a discussion on ways to build on the progress of the extended truce deal between Israel and Hamas by two days, news agency Reuters reported.

The meeting was "to build on the progress of the extended humanitarian pause agreement and to initiate further discussions about the next phase of a potential deal," Reuters quoted a source familiar with the matter as saying.

However, the outcome of the talks held between the three parties, also attended by Egyptian officials, was unclear, the source added.

CIA Director William Burns was in Doha "for meetings on the Israel-Hamas conflict including discussions on hostages," a US official said on condition of anonymity. The official did not elaborate on the matter. &nbsp;

Burns, David Barnea, head of Israel's Mossad intelligence service met with the Qatari prime minister a day after Doha announced the extension of the truce deal by two days, which was originally agreed on to be for four days in the Gaza Strip.

The extension was announced by Qatari foreign ministry spokesman Majed Al Ansari via a social media post on the same day when it was due to expire overnight.

"The State of Qatar announces that, as part of the ongoing mediation, an agreement has been reached to extend the humanitarian truce for an additional two days in the Gaza Strip," Ansari wrote.

Qatar, with the support of Egypt and the United States, had for days been engaged in intense negotiations to establish and prolong the truce in Gaza.

The extension was hailed by the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who called it a "glimpse of hope and humanity in the middle of the darkness of war".

Welcoming the announcement, the White House, in a statement, expressed hope that the humanitarian pause would continue longer.

"Of course, we welcome the announcement," White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told reporters after mediator Qatar said the initial four-day truce was to be lengthened.

"We would of course hope to see the pause extended further, and that will depend upon Hamas continuing to release hostages."

India's daily coronavirus caseload has finally registered a dip. In the last 24 hours, more than 320,000 people have tested positive. It is India's lowest count in 14 days.

For the past two days, new infections have been dropping, with major hotspots&nbsp; Maharashtra, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh reporting a fall in new cases.

The number of active cases have&nbsp;declined as well. It has fallen by 30,000. For the first time in 61 days, India has reported a decline in active cases. It now stands at 3.7 million, almost 20 million people have recovered.

However, there is no fall in the number of fatalities since once again India has reported almost 4,000 deaths in a day.

The pandemic has killed close to 250,000 people in India.&nbsp;The drop in positive cases is a promising sign.&nbsp;However, it cannot be said India has touched the peak. The country's positivity rate remains around 21 per cent, which means more than one out of five people are testing positive.

India needs to bring down the positivity rate to less than five per cent. Only then&nbsp;it will have the second wave be under control.

India needs to test more. On Sunday, India had conducted just 1.47 million tests which is the lowest this month. Monday was an improvement with over 1.8 million tests conducted in the last 24 hours.

In the past two weeks, India has conducted more than 1.9 million tests in a day multiple times. However, the vaccination curve has peaked. The vaccinations were on a high in April.

India has been administering close to two million doses a day with over 170 million shots given so far and just 2.7 per cent of India's population has got both shots.

Maharashtra has stopped vaccination for those above 18. The state says it will only inoculate those above 45 years of age because it does not have enough doses even as the Centre has asked state governments to prioritise those waiting for their second jab.

The ride-hailing company said that the cab drivers will have to pass an exam called "The Knowledge" which requires them to memorise the routes within the city.

The drivers have long opposed Uber over the idea of the deal stating that this would threaten their livelihoods.

The new service, which will be rolled out by Uber in 2024, will enable cab drivers to sign up to the application to take booked trips. The company, for the initial six months, is offering the drivers a commission-free deal.

However, a group representing the majority of black cab drivers has rejected the offer, claiming that there wasn't any demand for it from its members.

"We have no interest in sullying the name of London's iconic, world-renowned black cab trade by aligning it with Uber, its poor safety record and everything else that comes with it," said Steve McNamara, general secretary of the Licensed Taxi Drivers Association (LTDA).

Black cabs, also known as Hackney carriages, are London's only vehicles that can pick up passengers from the street or taxi ranks in the capital city. These can be booked through other apps as well.

The British capital is one of Uber's top five markets which is why the company, for the longest time, has wanted the taxi drivers to join its service like they have done in cities like Paris, New York and Rome.&nbsp;

The firm states that the deal would benefit the cabbies as well as Uber.

Uber strikes deal with London drivers to rope in iconic black cabs on its platform

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi late on Tuesday (Nov 28) praised the rescue operation that safely evacuated all the 41 workers trapped inside an under-construction road tunnel in Uttarakhand, stating that those involved in the rescue efforts had set an example of humanity and teamwork.

He also spoke to the rescued workers over the phone and enquired about their well-being, said the officials.

Reacting to the safe evacuation of the men, the Indian prime minister, took to his official X handle and said that the operation had made everyone emotional and that it had given a new lease of life to the labourers who were trapped inside the Silkyara tunnel in Uttarkashi for the last 17&nbsp;days.

"The success of the rescue operation of our labourer brothers in Uttarkashi is making everyone emotional. I want to say to the friends who were trapped in the tunnel that your courage and patience are inspiring everyone. I wish you all well and good health," PM Modi said in a post on X.

"Although the Holy Father's general clinical picture has improved with regard to his flu-like condition and inflammation of the respiratory tract, doctors have asked the Pope not to make the trip planned for the coming days to Dubai," Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni said in a statement.&nbsp;

"Pope Francis accepted the doctors' request with great regret and the trip is therefore cancelled," Bruni said.&nbsp;

However, the Vatican said that Francis still wished to contribute to the discussions and it would look into the ways this could be done remotely

The 86-year-old pontiff was scheduled to begin his three-day visit to Dubai on Friday after the Vatican earlier in a statement said that despite the health issues, the pope was going ahead with the trip.

In recent years, Francis has suffered a series of health issues. Earlier this year, he was hospitalised for pneumonia, characterised by the Vatican as bronchitis requiring intravenous antibiotic treatment. The current health concerns come amidst unusually windy and chilly weather in Rome.

Pope Francis cancels visit to COP28 climate meeting in Dubai due to health issues

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Wednesday (Nov 29) dubbed the cancellation of his meeting with British counterpart Rishi Sunak over the Parthenon marbles as an "unfortunate event". However, he stated that this would not affect the relations between Greece and Britain in the long run.

In a meeting with Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou, Mitsotakis, reflecting on the "positive side" of the issue said that it gave him the opportunity to further underline Greece’s request for the return of the Parthenon Sculptures.

He then said that the Greek-British relations have had a deep, significant, history.&nbsp;

“I returned yesterday from London. Just two words about the unfortunate event of the cancellation of my programmed meeting with my British counterpart. My first observation is that I believe it will not affect Greek-British relations in the long run, which are already relations that have a deep, significant, history," Mitsotakis said.&nbsp;

"And secondly, the cancellation of this meeting had a positive side, in that the fair request by Greece for the re-unification of the Parthenon marbles gained even greater publicity, not only in the United Kingdom but also in global public opinion,” he added.

Sakellaropoulou said the re-unification of the marbles had uncovered recognition in British as well as international public opinion, however, she said that some issues could not be solved ‘automatically’ and required time.

“We all followed the developments in London, what I find significant is that the Parthenon is a symbol not only of the Classical period but is also important for global cultural heritage, as the symbol of democracy and philosophy," she said.&nbsp;

With that in mind we can hope that the just request of our country will find a response quickly,” she further added.

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak cancelled his Tuesday's meeting with Mitsotakis after his office released a statement saying that both sides had previously decided that it should not be used as a public platform "to relitigate long, long settled matters."

"It's simply the case that if assurances are given and they're not adhered to, there are consequences for that," Sunak's spokesman told reporters.

Greece has repeatedly urged the British Museum to send back the 2,500-year-old sculptures that were removed by British diplomat Lord Elgin from the Parthenon temple in the early 19th century. During this period, Greece was under Ottoman Turkish rule.

A Downing Street spokesperson said "The UK-Greece relationship is hugely important", citing joint work within NATO and "tackling shared challenges like illegal migration" and the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East.

"The deputy prime minister was available to meet with the Greek PM to discuss these important issues," the spokesperson added, without referencing the marbles issue.

"Gudda is a fighter but his illness has taken a serious toll on him. He became extremely weak over the last few months. We are praying for him," his other friend was quoted as saying by HT City.

Bal had suffered a massive heart attack in 2010 after which he underwent an emergency angioplasty.

The 62-year-old has been battling alcohol abuse which is why he has been in and out of rehab centres. In November 2022, Bal was admitted to Medanta Hospital in critical condition when he was visited by his friend,&nbsp;Bollywood actor Arjun Rampal.

"Gudda is in very bad shape. He was almost dead in November. The doctors had to flush out alcohol and sleeping pills from his system when his friends took him to the hospital,” a close friend of Bal told HT City in an interview nearly 6-7 months back.

Bal made his mark in the fashion industry with his traditional styles and has held fashion shows across&nbsp;the world, including cities like London, Paris, New York, Singapore and Moscow.

Eleven more hostages held captive by Hamas during the Oct 7 onslaught&nbsp;were released on Monday (Nov 27) under the truce deal signed by both Israel and the Palestinian militant group.

The Israeli military released a statement saying that the hostages, freed in the Gaza Strip, had arrived safely in the country's territory. This came after the extension of the truce was announced by two days between the warring sides.

"Our forces will accompany them until they are reunited with their families," Israeli Defence Forces said in a statement, adding the military "salutes and embraces the released hostages upon their return home".

This fourth batch of hostages freed by Hamas included French, German and Argentinian dual nationals, Qatar said before their release.

On "the fourth day of the humanitarian truce agreement, 33 Palestinian civilians will be released today in exchange for the release of 11 Israeli detainees from Gaza," Qatar Foreign Ministry spokesman Majed Al Ansari said on X.

"Those released from Israeli prisons include 30 minors and 3 women, while the Israelis released from Gaza include 3 French citizens, 2 German citizens, and 6 Argentinian citizens," he added.

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock welcomed the release of the hostages, including "two German teenagers" after "52 days of suffering and despair".

In a swap, Israel freed 33 Palestinian detainees "during the night" under the truce agreement.

The release brought the total number of detainees freed by Israel during the initial, four-day pause in the fighting to 150.

The move was hailed by the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, who called it a "glimpse of hope and humanity in the middle of the darkness of war".

Welcoming the announcement, the White House, in a statement, expressed hope that the humanitarian pause would continue longer.

"Of course, we welcome the announcement," White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told reporters after mediator Qatar said the initial four-day truce was to be lengthened.

"We would of course hope to see the pause extended further, and that will depend upon Hamas continuing to release hostages."

"In his meetings in the Middle East, the secretary will stress the need to sustain the increased flow of humanitarian assistance to Gaza, secure the release of all hostages and improve protection to civilians in Gaza," the official said.
