A French court on Friday (Dec 8) convicted six teenagers for their involvement in the beheading of a teacher by an Islamic extremist that sent shock waves across the world.

The incident took place in 2020, when deceased history teacher, Samuel Paty was murdered outside the school after he showed caricatures of the Prophet Mohammad to his pupils in the class on freedom of expression from the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.

Paty was stabbed and then beheaded near the secondary school in the Paris suburb of Conflans-Sainte-Honorine on Oct 16, 2020.&nbsp;

The 18-year-old assailant, Chechen refugee Abdoullakh Anzorov, was shot dead on the spot by police.

The jail sentences, as per a youth court judgement read at a public hearing, range from 14 months to two years, however, all are either suspended or commuted and no defendant will serve prison time.

<h2>Defendants aged between 13-15</h2>

The trial was held behind closed doors taking into consideration the age of the defendants at the time of the events, which ranged from 13 to 15 years.

Out of six, five on trial, who were aged between 14 to 15 years at the time of Paty's murder, were being tried for criminal conspiracy with intent to cause violence.

They were accused of being involved in a premeditated criminal conspiracy in exchange for money.

Four of them received suspended sentences of between 14 and 18 months.

The fifth was sentenced to two-year-imprisonment, however, 18 months of that was suspended and the teenager was set to be released with an electronic tag for the remaining six months.

The sixth out of the lot was a girl, who was 13 at the time of the incident. She was accused of making false allegations about the deceased victim stating that he had asked Muslim students to identify themselves and leave the classroom before he showed the cartoons, even though she wasn't present in the class at that time.

She was handed an 18-month suspended sentence and put on probation measures for two years.

Ethan Crumbley had opened fire on Nov 30 2021 with a semi-automatic handgun that his father bought as a Christmas gift days before the incident occurred.

The shooting claimed the lives of four and injured six other students along with a teacher. Crumbley was 15 years old at the time of the shooting.&nbsp;

His parents have also been charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection with the shooting.

This is one of the first cases in the United States that has held parents accountable for their child's school shooting.

"All I want is for the people I hurt to have a final sense of culpability that justice has somewhat been served and in a capacity that they can recognize it with. Any sentence that they ask for, I ask that you do impose it on me because I want them to be happy and I want them to feel secure and safe and I don't want them to worry another day," Crumbley said while addressing the court before sentencing.

Parents of the victims as well as survivors of the mass shooting also opened up on the impact of the incident.

"For the past two years our family has been navigating our way through complete hell," said Buck Myre, whose son Tate was among those killed.

"We miss Tate," Myre said. "Our family has a permanent hole in it that can never be fixed. Ever."

Crumbley pleaded guilty in October 2022 to bringing a 9mm Sig Sauer handgun to school and opening fire on fellow students.

In a groundbreaking move, the European Union (EU)&nbsp; on Friday, Dec 8,&nbsp;clinched a landmark deal on laws that would govern the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and ways to regulate AI models such as ChatGPT.

With this, the European Union has become the first continent in the world to set clear rules for the use of artificial intelligence.

The deal between EU member states came nearly after 36 hours of negotiations. They&nbsp;are set to list out details in the coming days that could shape the final legislation&nbsp;

"The AI Act is much more than a rulebook -- it's a launchpad for EU startups and researchers to lead the global race for trustworthy AI," he added.

During their meeting in Brussels, negotiators listed curbs on how AI could be used in Europe, which they stated would not hamper the innovation and also not affect the opportunities for future European AI champions.

Armenia and Azerbaijan released a joint statement on Thursday (Dec 7) stating that both countries have agreed to take tangible steps in the direction towards normalising ties and exchanging prisoners of war.

Israel allowed a "minimal" increase in the fuel supply to conflict-torn Gaza to prevent a "humanitarian collapse", Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said in a statement on Wednesday.

"The Security Cabinet, this evening, approved the recommendation of the War Cabinet to allow a minimal supplement of fuel – necessary to prevent a humanitarian collapse and the outbreak of epidemics – into the southern Gaza Strip," Netanyahu's office wrote on X.

"The minimal amount will be determined from time to time by the War Cabinet according to the morbidity situation and humanitarian situation in the Strip," it added.

The move by Israel came after the United Nations warned of a complete breakdown of public order in Gaza as the conflict intensifies in the south of the Palestinian territory.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres feared the public order would "completely break down soon" in Gaza.

"Amid constant bombardment by the Israel Defense Forces, and without shelter or the essentials to survive, I expect public order to completely break down soon due to the desperate conditions, rendering even limited humanitarian assistance impossible," he said in a letter to the UN Security Council.&nbsp;

Guterres told the council in his letter that the war "may aggravate existing threats to international peace and security."

He invoked Article 99 of the founding UN Charter, allowing him to "bring to the attention of the Security Council any matter which in his opinion may threaten the maintenance of international peace and security."

The White House on Thursday (Dec 7) urged India to hold accountable those behind the alleged plot to kill a Sikh separatist leader, which the US claims to have thwarted, even as it called New Delhi a strategic partner.

“India is a strategic partner. We’re deepening that strategic partnership. They’re a member of the Quad in the Pacific. We participate with them on a range of issues and we want to see that continue unabated. That said, at the same time, we certainly recognise the seriousness of these allegations,” National Security spokesperson John Kirby told reporters at a White House news conference.

Kirby's was asked about the impact that the alleged foiled plot to kill Gurpatwant Singh Pannun would have on bilateral ties.

“We want it fully investigated and those responsible to be held properly accountable,” he said.

“It’s under active investigation. We’ve said that we’re glad that our Indian counterparts are taking it seriously and doing that. We want those responsible for these attacks to be held fully accountable, but I won’t get ahead of an investigation that isn’t complete,” Kirby added.

Earlier, White House deputy national security adviser Jon Finer led a US delegation to India's capital New Delhi where he discussed forming an investigative panel to probe the murder plot against Pannun, the leader of the banned Sikhs For Justice (SFJ) outfit.

“The nexus between organised crime, trafficking, gunrunning and extremists at an international level is a serious issue for the law enforcement agencies and organisations to consider and it is for that reason that a high-level inquiry committee has been constituted and we will be guided by its results,” said the MEA spokesperson, in response to the question about the case.&nbsp;

The Department of Justice filed fresh criminal charges against US President Joe Biden's son, Hunter, on Thursday (Dec 7), which condemned him for not paying $1.4 million in taxes and rather spending money on a lavish lifestyle.

As per an indictment filed in US District Court in Central California, Hunter was charged with three felony and six misdemeanour tax offences.

If convicted, he would face up to 17 years in prison. The Justice Department said its probe into Hunter is ongoing.

"The Defendant engaged in a four-year scheme to not pay at least $1.4 million in self-assessed federal taxes he owed for tax years 2016 through 2019," the indictment read.

It added that Biden had "spent millions of&nbsp;dollars on an extravagant lifestyle rather than paying his tax bills."

It added: "Between 2016 and October 15, 2020, the defendant spent this money on drugs, escorts and girlfriends, luxury hotels and rental properties, exotic cars, clothing, and other items of a personal nature, in short, everything but his taxes."

The charges that were filed on Thursday stated that Hunter had "earned handsomely" whilst he was serving on the boards of a Ukrainian industrial cartel and a Chinese private equity fund.

However, as his income increased, his expenditures also kept increasing, according to the indictment.

Hunter Biden, in 2018 alone "spent more than $1.8 million, including approximately $772,000 in cash withdrawals, approximately $383,000 in payments to women, approximately $151,000 in clothing and accessories" among other expenditures, read the indictment.

"The Defendant did not use any of these funds to pay his taxes in 2018," it further added.

Earlier in October, Hunter pleaded not guilty to the charges in Delaware which stated that he lied about his drug use while buying a handgun, in the first criminal prosecution of a sitting US president's child.&nbsp;

“I realised every record label was actively working to try to replace me. I thought instead, I’d replace myself first with a new me. It’s harder to hit a moving target,” she added.

In the interview, she also particularly slammed the label Big Machine for keeping her on a tight schedule and not providing her with the required creative freedom.
