PM Modi stresses on need to prepare global framework for AI, raises concerns over deepfake abuse

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, in a recent interview, has claimed that the allegations he levelled against India over its involvement in the killing of pro-Khalistan leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar were intended to "put a chill" on New Delhi amid strained diplomatic ties between the two countries.

While speaking to the Canadian Press in a year-end interview, Trudeau said that the statement he made on September&nbsp;18 in the House of Commons was meant to place an extra 'level of deterrence' for India to refrain from carrying out such acts in the future.

He further said that he wanted the Canadians to know that the government was on top of the situation and proactively taking measures.

"Too many Canadians were worried that they were vulnerable," Trudeau said in the interview, adding that the Sikh community in British Columbia had been raising concerns since shortly after Nijjar was killed.

"We felt that all the quiet diplomacy and all the measures that we put in -- and ensured that our security services put in to keep people safe in the community, needed a further level of deterrence, perhaps of saying publicly and loudly that we know, or we have credible reasons to believe, that the Indian government was behind this," he said.

"And therefore put a chill on them continuing or considering doing anything like this," he added.

He also went on to claim that the Indian government chose to attack and undermine them with misinformation after he had made the allegations public and accused New Delhi of launching an information war.

"They chose to attack us and undermine us with a scale of misinformation and disinformation in their media that was comical," he said.

However, on being asked if the discussion with Modi on the issue was helpful, the Canadian Prime Minister replied with a "No".

"We knew it would be difficult conversation, but we also knew that this was an important moment for India to be demonstrating its leadership on the world stage with the G20," Trudeau said.

"And we felt that we could use that as a constructive opportunity to work together."

India's Ministry of External Affairs, which has recently constituted a high-level inquiry committee to probe the alleged murder plot against Sikh separatist leader Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, maintains that Canada had given no evidence about its allegations and so the question of equitable treatment for the two countries does not arise.

"The place is already prepared. I want to be buried in Santa Maria Maggiore," the pontiff, who turns 87 this weekend, told Mexican broadcaster Televisa's N+ streaming service.

He also revealed his plans to visit Belgium in the year 2024 and also hoped to visit his native places Argentina and Polynesia.

The pontiff's decision on his tomb would make him the first pope to be buried outside of the Vatican in over a century.

Before Francis, Leo XIII eschewed a tomb in St Peter's whose remains lie in the basilica of St John the Lateran in Rome. He died in 1903.

Santa Maria Maggiore is one of the four papal basilicas in Rome and one with which Francis said he felt a "special connection".

Francis used to go there on weekends while visiting Rome before becoming pope. Since being elected in 2013, he prayed there before and after taking a trip and also after undergoing surgery.

As per the Vatican News official media outlet, seven popes have previously been laid to rest in the basilica.

Pope Francis chooses final resting place outside of Vatican

The Hamas-run&nbsp;health ministry on Tuesday (Dec 12) released a statement saying that the Israeli troops were raiding a hospital in the north of the Palestinian territory.

"Israeli occupation forces are storming Kamal Adwan hospital after besieging and bombing it for days," ministry spokesman Ashraf al-Qudra said in a statement.

Al-Qudra said that the armed forces were assembling men in the hospital courtyard, including medical staff.

"We fear their arrest and the arrest of the medical teams or their killing," the health ministry spokesman added, calling for international intervention.

The United Nations humanitarian agency OCHA alleged that at least two mothers had lost their lives when the maternity department of Kamal Adwan Hospital was reportedly hit on Monday.&nbsp;

"The hospital remains surrounded by Israeli troops and tanks, and fighting with armed groups has been reported in its vicinity for three consecutive days," OCHA said.

It said the hospital was "currently accommodating 65 patients, including 12 children in the intensive care unit and six newborns in incubators".&nbsp;

"About 3,000 internally displaced persons remain trapped in the facility and are awaiting evacuation with extreme shortages of water, food and power reported," it added.

Israeli military has previously raided other medical facilities in Gaza including Al-Shifa, the territory's largest hospital.

As per the United Nations, at present there is only one hospital in northern Gaza which can admit the patients.&nbsp;

Israel intensifies assault as troops raid hospital in north Gaza, says Hamas-run health ministry

The JNU Students' Discipline and Conduct Rule was issued after the approval by the highest decision-making body of the university on November 24.

A Chief Proctor Office manual listed the "rules of discipline and proper conduct of students of Jawaharlal Nehru University".

"It was strongly felt to review the existing disciplinary rules and regulations of the office of the Chief Proctor. There are no substantially approved rules and regulations on proper conduct and discipline of students by the statutory body (i.e Executive Council) of JNU in vogue," the document said as per news agency ANI.

It mentioned that a repeat offender would be expelled from the University in India's capital city in case he/she gets awarded five or more punishments during the entire duration of their degree.

The punishments have been listed for 28 types of "misconduct", which include blockage, indulging in gambling, unauthorised occupation of hostel rooms, use of abusive and derogatory language and committing forgery.

The JNU Students Union denounced the new manual saying that it was an attempt to stifle the vibrant campus culture that has defined JNU for decades.

The students' union further demanded the administration to immediately revoke the manual.

"Such excessive regulations are intended to discourage open discussions, dissent, and intellectual exploration, which are fundamental to the spirit of our university. According to the new manual, protests before any academic building can lead to rustication, eviction from the hostel and a fine of Rs 20,000. The JNU Students' Discipline and Conduct Rule was issued after the approval by the highest decision-making body of the university on November 24. A Chief Proctor Office manual listed the "rules of discipline and proper conduct of students of Jawaharlal Nehru University". "It was strongly felt to review the existing disciplinary rules and regulations of the office of the Chief Proctor. There are no substantially approved rules and regulations on proper conduct and discipline of students by the statutory body (i.e Executive Council) of JNU in vogue," the document said as per news agency ANI. It mentioned that a repeat offender would be expelled from the University in India's capital city in case he/she gets awarded five or more punishments during the entire duration of their degree. The punishments have been listed for 28 types of "misconduct", which include blockage, indulging in gambling, unauthorised occupation of hostel rooms, use of abusive and derogatory language and committing forgery. He said the country needed to tackle a deep fiscal deficit he put at 5.5% of GDP, adding Argentina had a fiscal deficit for 113 of the last 123 years - the cause of its economic woes.

"We're here to solve this problem at the root," he said. "For this, we need to solve our addiction to fiscal deficit."

The South American country, a major grains producer, is battling inflation nearing 150%, central bank reserves deep in the red and two-fifths of the population in poverty. It has a wobbling $44 billion loan with the International Monetary Fund.

"I welcome the decisive measures," IMF chief Kristalina Georgieva said, calling it "an important step toward restoring stability and rebuilding the country's economic potential."

The IMF called the measures "bold" and said in a statement they would "help stabilise the economy and set the basis for more sustainable and private-sector led growth" following "serious policy setbacks" in recent months.

The country's foreign exchange and grains markets had been locked down on Tuesday as traders awaited the new government's economic plan. Banks had already anticipated a sharp devaluation, with some weakening their FX rate to 700.

Since 2019, Argentina's peso currency has been kept artificially strong by strict capital controls which create a wide gap between the official exchange rate of 366 per dollar and parallel rates as high as 1,000 per dollar.

Analysts said the new measures sent a strong message.

Kira Yarmysh, Navalny's spokesperson, said that staff at the IK-6 facility in Melekhovo had told Navalny's lawyer waiting outside that he was no longer among its inmates.

"Today, as on Friday, the lawyers tried to get to IK-6 and IK-7 — &nbsp;two colonies in the Vladimir region where Alexey Navalny might be. They have just been informed simultaneously in both colonies that he is not there. We still don't know where Alexey is," Yarmysh said.

Earlier in the day, Singh said that Bhajanlal Sharma has been elected as the leader of the Rajasthan BJP Legislature Party.

"Bhajanlal Sharma has been elected as the leader of the Rajasthan BJP Legislature Party. There will be two Deputy CMs- Diya Singh and Dr Prem Chand Bairwa. Vasudev Devnani to be the Speaker," Singh said.

Sharma, after being appointed, asserted that the state government would ensure the holistic development of Rajasthan in the coming years.

"I would like to assure you that all the MLAs of Rajasthan will definitely meet the expectations that the people have with us, with the BJP. Under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi, we will ensure holistic development of Rajasthan in all areas," he said on Tuesday.

Out of the 456 members of parliament who cast their votes, 266 voted no confidence in Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki.&nbsp;

He had the backing of 190 lawmakers.

"We are saying goodbye to PiS ... history is being made," Monika Rosa, a lawmaker from Tusk's Civic Coalition (KO) grouping wrote on social media platform X.

PiS, during its tenure, had claimed to safeguard Poland's sovereignty and traditions from foreign interference, while also improving the living standards for millions of Poles by introducing social benefits and raising the minimum wage.&nbsp;

Morawiecki, presenting his general programme in the parliament on Monday, said that he was sure that the "project" PiS had for Poland "must win and will win".

"We introduced a new socio-economic model - the first steps in creating a country of solidarity," Morawiecki said.

He also underlined how he projects the ties with the European Union should look like.

Indian parliament on Tuesday (Dec 12) passed a bill to regulate the appointment and service terms of Chief Election commissioners and election commissioners.

The bill cleared by Rajya Sabha included critical amendments like the retention of CEC, EC status at par with the judges of the Supreme Court and upgradation of the search committee.

It also inserted a new clause to safeguard them the court cases while releasing their official duties.

While the bill was passed by a voice vote, the members of the opposition argued that the suggested measure subjugates the poll authority to the Executive and also violates the Constitution.&nbsp;

The bill was cleared after Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal's response who said that the Election Commission will continue to "work independently" and that bill had been brought after a judgement by the Supreme Court.

<h2>Opposition stages walkout</h2>

The opposition members staged a walkout during the proceedings while marking their objection to the proposed law.

Congress MP Randeep Surjewala called the bill an attack on the democracy saying that the autonomy, fearlessness and fairness of India's democracy and electoral machinery have been crushed by a bulldozer.

"Modi government has attacked the democracy of India. The autonomy, fearlessness and fairness of India's democracy and electoral machinery have been crushed by a bulldozer," Surjewala said.

"The Modi Government is passing a law in Rajya Sabha today to make the Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioners of the Election Commission of India, a 'pawn Election Commissioner'," he added.

He also slammed the Modi government saying that this bill had turned the literal meaning of EC from 'Electoral Credibility' to 'Elections Compromised'.

"They will appoint a Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commissioners of their own choice. They will run their Election Commission as per their desire. They will prepare an electoral list as per their desire...This is perhaps one of the biggest blows to democracy hurled by the Modi government in the last 9 years...We will take it to the end and the struggle will continue from Parliament to the streets," he added.
