Heralding a generational shift, India's&nbsp;Congress party&nbsp;replaced Kamal Nath as its Madhya Pradesh unit chief on Saturday and appointed Jitu Patwari in his place.

The development comes days after the party's humiliating defeat in the Madhya Pradesh Assembly polls, where the Congress, led by Nath, failed to replace the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government.

The Congress could win only 66 seats, while the BJP won 163 seats in the recently-concluded election.

Sources said Nath was asked to tender his resignation after the poll results were out. Nath met Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge and tendered his resignation soon after the results.

"The Congress president has appointed Shri Jitu Patwari as the president of the Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee with immediate effect," an official communication from the party said.

"The party appreciates the contributions of outgoing PCC president Shri Kamal Nath," it added. 
By replacing Nath with Patwari, who was the working president of the Madhya Pradesh Congress, the grand old party has initiated a generational shift by bringing in young leaders to the forefront.

"The Congress president has also approved the proposal of the appointment of Shri Umang Singhar as the CLP leader and Shri Hemant Katare as the deputy leader of Madhya Pradesh," the statement said.

Another statement said Kharge has given his approval to a proposal to appoint Charan Das Mahant as the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader in Chhattisgarh with immediate effect.

"The Congress president has also approved the proposal to continue Deepak Baij as the president of the Chhattisgarh Pradesh Congress Committee," it said.

"I think everybody knows that India is a country where we are very responsible, very prudent in what we do and the whole issue for us has been that we have always maintained that. If any country, not just Canada, if any country has a concern and gives us some input or some basis for that concern, we are always open to looking at it," he said, adding, "This is what countries do."

"So we very sincerely have told the Canadians saying that look it's up to you, I mean your choice whether you would like us to pursue it, further look into it or not," he added.

Jaishankar, speaking on US indictment of Indian national Nikhil Gupta in connection with a foiled murder plot to kill Khalistani separatist and leader of the banned Sikhs For Justice (SFJ) outfit Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, underlined that at the time America raised the issue, some specific things were brought to India's notice and that New Delhi was looking into it.

Earlier in November, the United States had charged Gupta with murder-for-hire over a conspiracy to assassinate Pannun, who is a dual citizen of America and Canada, the US attorney's office in Manhattan said in a statement.

US Attorney Damian Williams announced charges against Gupta, who was arrested by Czech authorities in the month of June this year in conformance to the bilateral extradition treaty between the United States and the Czech Republic.

Following this development, MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi released a statement saying that the case, allegedly linking Gupta to an Indian official was a "matter of concern" and was contrary to government policy.

On the other hand, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said alleged the involvement of "agents of the Indian government" in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

However, India has rebuffed the claims calling them "absurd and motivated".

"In a way, it's a human failing. But I think today it is harming the world. It is harming the world because, on key issues confronting the world, the UN is getting less and less effective," he said.

"And I can also tell you the global sentiment. I mean, today, if you ask 200 countries in the world, do you want reform or don't you want reform? A very large number of countries would say, yes, we want reform...," he added while emphasising that nations are urging for reform efforts in the UN Security Council to deal with the prevailing challenges.

A senior Israeli envoy on Saturday (Dec 16) held a meeting with the prime minister of Qatar, a key mediator in the ongoing conflict in Gaza, news agency Reuters reported citing sources.

As per reports, sources from Egypt suggested that Israel appeared to be more open to a new deal with the Palestinian militant group Hamas.

"Two are killed immediately, one is injured and runs back into the building," the official said, adding that the soldiers heard "a cry for help... in Hebrew".

The Irish government is planning to consider a request to alter the constitution in order to provide nature with a protected status. This could make Ireland the very first country in the European Union to bestow constitutional rights on nature for its protection.

The proposal, recommended by the Joint Committee on Environment and Climate Action, has recommended the government advance a referendum on safeguarding biodiversity.

This would grant nature rights similar to that of humans.

It came in response to a report by the Irish Citizens' Assembly on Biodiversity Loss.

In recent years, the Rights of Nature movement has become widely popular.

The movement seeks to recognise elements of nature such as trees, mountains, and rivers as entities with rights so that they can exist, flourish, be respected and be regenerated.

It also recognises the right of any person or organisation to safeguard and enforce the rights on behalf of nature.

Earlier in October this year, the Centre for Democratic and Environmental Rights&nbsp;appeared before the Joint Committee and testified about the reason why rights of nature needed to be recognised.

The team was backed by Dr Peter Doran of the Queen's University Belfast School of Law.

Executive director Mari Margil embraced the recommendation by the committee.

"We congratulate chairperson Brian Leddin and the Joint Committee for its work and taking this important step forward toward enshrining the rights of nature within Ireland's constitution," BBC quoted her as saying.

"Further, we look forward to the government and parliament's next steps to protect the rights of nature, and offer whatever assistance we can in this process," she added.

The Supreme Court on Friday (Dec 15) refused to put a hold on the Allahabad High Court's decision allowing a court-monitored survey of the Shahi Idgah mosque sitting&nbsp;next to the Krishna Janmabhoomi temple in Mathura on a plea by the Muslim side, and asked them to challenge the order by way of an appeal.

The high court on Thursday allowed a court-monitored survey of the Shahi Idgah and also agreed on the appointment of an advocate commissioner to supervise the survey of the mosque premises.

The hearing was postponed by a bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and SVN Bhatti, until January 9, on a plea filed by the Committee of Management Trust Shahi Masjid Idgah challenging the May 26 order of the high court transferring to itself all matters related to the dispute pending before a Mathura court.&nbsp;

"List the special leave petition on January 9. All the contentions and issues will be considered on the said date. In case petitioners have any grievance, it will be open to them to file a challenge in accordance with law," the bench ordered.

The bench informed senior advocate Huzefa Ahmadi, appearing for the mosque committee, who stated that the high court was taking into consideration interlocutory applications having 'far-reaching ramifications' in the matter and passing orders, that the order of the high court passed on Thursday has not been formally challenged before it.

Ahmadi said that the high court was entertaining application after application even as the issue of its jurisdiction to transfer to itself all matters related to the dispute is under challenge before the apex court.

When Ahmadi pointed out the Supreme Court is going on a winter break from Monday and the high court may pass orders in the matter, Justice Khanna said, "Please tell the high court that this matter is listed on January 9 in the Supreme Court. That will be enough."

"You know the procedure for mentioning the matter during vacations if any adverse order is passed," Justice Khanna told Ahmadi.

HMS Diamond, a Type 45 destroyer, is carrying out operations to make sure freedom of navigation, reassure merchant vessels and ensure the safe flow of trade, said the defence ministry.

The deployment of the naval vessel took place&nbsp;following the seizure of an Israeli-linked cargo vessel by Iranian-backed Yemeni Houthi rebels in the Red Sea on Nov 19 amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas war.

On the other hand,&nbsp;the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said that&nbsp;an American destroyer on Saturday shot down more than a dozen drones in the Red Sea launched from Huthi-controlled areas of Yemen.

"The Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer USS CARNEY... operating in the Red Sea, successfully engaged 14 unmanned aerial systems launched as a drone wave from Huthi-controlled areas of Yemen," CENTCOM said on X.

<h2>Spate of attacks</h2>

The Yemeni Houthis have launched a series of drone and projectile strikes targetting Israel since Hamas launched unprecedented attacks on Oct 7, claiming the lives of around 1,140 people, mostly civilians, as per Israeli figures.

Nearly 240 people were taken hostages in the attacks. &nbsp;

Israel in retaliation&nbsp;launched a counter-offensive that, as per the Hamas-run territory's health ministry has killed at least 18,800 people, mostly women and children.

The Houthi rebels have threatened to attack any vessels heading to Israeli ports unless food and medicine are allowed into the war-torn Gaza Strip. &nbsp;

On Friday, two of the world's largest shipping firms, Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd, said that they were suspending passage through a Red Sea strait vital for global commerce, after the incidents.

UK defence minister Grant Shapps&nbsp;warned Saturday that "the recent spate of illegal attacks represent a direct threat to international commerce and maritime security in the Red Sea."

"The UK remains committed to repelling these attacks to protect the free flow of global trade," he added.

State television made the announcement after halting its regular programming and switched to a broadcast of the Koranic recital.

Kuwait announced 40 days of mourning and a three-day closure of official departments starting from Sunday to Tuesday.&nbsp;

Sheikh Nawaf was admitted to the hospital in the month of November "due to an emergency health problem", according to the official KUNA news agency, which did not share many details about his illness. He was later declared in stable condition.

His health had&nbsp;been a concern during his term given his age.

Born in 1937, Sheikh Nawaf was the fifth son of Kuwait's late ruler from 1921 to 1950 Sheikh Ahmad al-Jaber Al-Sabah.

He began his political career at the age of 25 as governor of Hawalli province, where he remained until 1978 when he started a decade as interior minister.&nbsp;

India has declared a one-day state of mourning throughout the nation on Sunday as a mark of respect to Sheikh Nawaf.

"His Highness Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, the Amir of the State of Kuwait passed away on December 16, 2023. As a mark of respect to the departed dignitary, the Government of India has decided that there will be one day's state mourning (/topic/state-mourning) on December 17, 2023, throughout India," the Ministry of Home Affairs said in an official release.

It further stated that vapes were harmful to health and that they could aggravate nicotine addiction among non-smokers, especially children and young people.

It then said that kids between the ages of 13-15 were using vapes more than adults in all WHO regions helped by aggressive marketing.

"Kids are being recruited and trapped at an early age to use e-cigarettes and may get hooked to nicotine," said Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General, urging countries to implement strict measures. "I urge countries to implement strict measures to prevent uptake to protect their citizens, especially their children and young people.”

There is an alarming increase in the use of e-cigarettes among children and young people with rates exceeding adult use in many countries,” said Dr Ruediger Krech, WHO Director for Health Promotion.

WHO calls for governments to ban flavoured vapes, impose tobacco-style curbs

The United States on Thursday (Dec 14) said that it wants the war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas to "end as soon as possible," the White House said.

The comments by the White House came amid US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan's visit to Israel as the international pressure mounted over Tel Aviv due to a rise in the number of civilian casualties in Gaza more than two months into the Israel-Hamas war.

Sullivan, during his visit to Tel Aviv, discussed Israel moving to "low-intensity operations" against Gaza "in the near future", White House spokesman John Kirby said.&nbsp;

The top White House official also met Defence Minister Yoav Gallant who told him that the war would last for "more than several months", according to Gallant's office.

"Hamas is a terrorist organization that built itself over a decade to fight Israel, and they built infrastructure under the ground and above the ground and it is not easy to destroy them," his office said in a statement.

"It will require a period of time -- it will last more than several months, but we will win and we will destroy them," it added.

Ahead of his trip, Sullivan said at a Wall Street Journal event that he would discuss a timetable to end the war and urge Israeli leaders "to move to a different phase from the kind of high-intensity operations that we see today."

"We will continue until the end. There is no question at all. I say this in light of great pain, but also in light of international pressure. Nothing will stop us. We are going until the end, until victory, nothing less than that," Netanyahu said in a video statement released by his office.

While talking to the soldiers over the radio, Netanyahu said, "I want you to pass this along to the last of the soldiers - we're continuing until the end, until victory, until Hamas is annihilated, let there be no doubt about this. This is important, it is a message I want to convey to each and every soldier over there."

Around 1,200 Israelis, most of them civilians, lost their lives in the Oct 7 attacks, in which Hamas gunmen also took some 240 hostages, according to Israeli officials.
