Peruvian authorities on Thursday (Dec 21) seized approximately 4,000 turtles that originated in the Amazon at the main international airport, the country's wildlife service said.

The National Forestry and Wildlife Service released a statement saying that it has thwarted "a shipment of live turtles at the Jorge Chavez airport that was going to be exported to Indonesia."

"They do not have permission to export this species (Charapa turtle). This is Podocnemis unifilis or Taricaya, but this species is different, there are beards under the beak of the turtle, in the Taricaya there is only one beard, and here there are two, that is one of the characteristics helping make an easy distinction," Peruvian National Forestry and Wildlife Service staff said.

Among the ones seized were baby Arrau turtles which are considered the largest river turtle in South America, and the yellow-spotted river turtle, which were found in small transparent plastic containers inside cardboard boxes.

Both turtle species are listed in the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) of Wild Fauna and Flora Appendix II. These require the tracking and regulation of trade.

The yellow-spotted river turtle, which is the second largest freshwater turtle in the Amazon, is listed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature as vulnerable to extinction.

As per Interpol, there is a black market for illegal wildlife products worth up to $20 billion per year, which is forcing species to the brink of extinction.

A North Korean nuclear reactor at the country's Yongbyon complex appears to be operating for the very first time, said the UN nuclear watchdog and independent experts on Thursday (Dec 21).

This indicates an additional potential source of plutonium for nuclear weapons.

North Korea for years has been using spent fuel from a 5-megawatt nuclear reactor at Yongbyon to produce plutonium for its nuclear arsenal but a telltale discharge of warm water from a larger light-water reactor suggests it is coming online, too, said the International Atomic Energy Agency in a statement.

"The discharge of warm water is indicative the reactor has reached criticality," IAEA chief Rafael Grossi said in a statement, meaning the nuclear chain reaction in the reactor is self-sustaining.

The IAEA lost access to North Korea since Pyongyang expelled its inspectors in the year 2009. The agency now observes the country mainly using satellite imagery.

Grossi further added that without the access, it was difficult for the IAEA to confirm the operational status of the reactor.

The IAEA in a statement said that it had recorded a strong outflow of water from the light-water reactor's cooling system since October, suggesting ongoing commissioning of the reactor.&nbsp;

Grossi further elucidating on the current status, said that there were recent indications pointing out that the water was warm.

The researchers at the James Martain Center for Nonproliferation Studies (CNS) in California also concluded that the reactor was most likely operating, adding that it may be "a significant source of nuclear material" for the nuclear weapons program, which is banned by United Nations Security Council resolutions.&nbsp;

In the report that came out in the month of April, the DC-based Institute for Science and International Security estimated the light-water reactor "could allow a surge in plutonium quantities at an estimated rate of about 20 kilograms of plutonium per year, a rate of four to five times larger than that of the small adjacent reactor".

The study suggested that North Korea may have anywhere from 31 to 96 nuclear warheads, depending on the types of devices being built and which fuel is being used.

The Norwegian cruise ship MS Maud lost its navigation ability and suffered a power outage after being hit by a rogue wave while it was sailing in the North Sea, said Danish authorities and the ship's owner on Thursday (Dec 21).

The 266 passengers and 131 crew members were safe, as per the Danish Joint Rescue Coordination Centre.

"There is no power on the ship. The main engine is functioning but the navigation systems and radars are not," a spokesperson for the centre, which is responsible for coordinating search and rescue operations, said.

While the ship was sailing approximately 200 kilometres (120 miles) off Denmark's west coast and roughly 330 kilometres off Britain's east coast, strong winds tore apart the windows on the bridge of the vessel, allowing water to enter which resulted in a power failure on the bridge, said the centre.

The ship belongs to the cruise company HX which is a unit of Norway's Hurtigruten Group, it left Floroe in Norway on Thursday (Dec 21) and was due to arrive in Tilbury in the UK on Friday (Dec 22).

"Earlier this afternoon, December 21, MS Maud reported a temporary loss of power after encountering a rogue wave," Hurtigruten said in an emailed statement.

"At this time, the ship has confirmed that no serious passenger or crew injuries have been sustained as a result of the incident and the condition of the ship remains stable," it said.

A towage vessel from the civil rescue company Esvagt was then sent which was scheduled to arrive at the ship around 2230 GMT.

The ship is now being steered manually from the engine room, it can however not navigate.

Esvagt support vessels had then arrived at the spot to help the ship navigate until it could be dragged to the port.

"I don't think there is any danger to the ship now. If the captain thought so, he would have asked to be evacuated which he hasn't," the rescue centre spokesperson said.

The area was on Thursday hit by a storm with hurricane-force gusts blowing from the northwest which the Danish Meteorological Institute said would continue on Friday as well.

Norwegian cruise ship loses ability to navigate in North Sea after storm shatters windows

India was granted consular access to Nikhil Gupta on at least three occasions, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement.

Gupta is jailed in a Czech prison post US indictment accusing him of involvement in a foiled murder plot to kill Khalistani Sikh separatist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun on American soil.

External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Arindam Bagchi, during a weekly media briefing also said that India was extending necessary consular assistance to Gupta.

"An Indian national is currently in the custody of the Czech authorities pending a request for extradition to the US. We have received consular access at least on three occasions," Bagchi said at his weekly media briefing in response to a question on the case involving Gupta.

"We are extending necessary consular assistance as per requirement," he said.

Last week, Gupta's family approached the Supreme Court and pleaded to issue a direction to the central government to intervene in the extradition proceedings and ensure a fair trial in the case.

"The family of this person has gone to our Supreme Court and this is a process that is going on in the Supreme Court. I do not think it will be appropriate for us to comment on issues like jurisdiction. We will wait for what the Supreme Court has to say," Bagchi said.

A Pakistani court on Thursday (Dec 21) rejected former Prime Minister Imran Khan's plea to suspend a conviction which will keep him at bay from contesting elections, said his lawyer.

The verdict came a day prior to the deadline to submit nomination papers for elections for provincial and national assemblies due on February 8.

Khan, who has been at the centre of a political crisis since he was ousted in a parliamentary no-confidence vote in April 2022, was seeking to overturn the conviction which has barred him from contesting elections for five years straight.

"Imran Khan's request to suspend the decision in the Tosha Khana criminal case was rejected so that disqualification would remain (in place)," Khan's lawyer and spokesman on legal affairs, Naeem Haider Panjutha, said on X.

In another&nbsp;social media post, he said that Khan's party Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), would challenge the verdict in the Supreme Court on Friday.

The former Pakistani prime minister was imprisoned in August this year after being sentenced to three years in jail over unlawfully selling state gifts during his 2018-22 tenure as the country's leader.

“Our homes are not usable, and we don’t know how we can survive this winter. The winter is approaching and it is too cold in these places. It will be covered with snow for weeks, the ways to travel will be blocked and these areas will be freezing,” the Independent quoted resident Aslam, who is the father of three currently living in a tent, as saying.

“Sometimes we don’t have bread to eat, and we sleep hungry. Seeing my child getting weak day by day and crying for food is devastating,” said Salma, a mother of a seven-month-old infant who had to rush her child to a clinic run by the UK-based humanitarian organisation according to the Independent.

The health workers are also making efforts to keep respiratory diseases at bay.

“Our physicians reported that it gets cold at night, and it is difficult to ensure the well-being of children inside the tents,” said Arshad Malik, the country director of Save the Children, heading operations in Afghanistan, as per the Independent.

“This problem can negatively affect the health of both the child and the mother. We are afraid that the severe respiratory infections are highly likely due to prolonged exposure to dust storms, enclosed smoky shelters, other sick people, and extremely cold weather, as many families have travelled to Afghanistan in open, overcrowded trucks,” the Independent quotes him as saying.

The United Kingdom had slashed the aid for Afghanistan in the month of May this year by more than half, directly hitting the Afghans who were benefitting from the international funding.

Britain's Metropolitan Police on Thursday (Dec 12) appealed for more information on the last movements of Indian student, Gurashman Singh Bhatia, who went missing last week and his body was found by police divers in a lake in the Canary Wharf area of east London.

The Met Police released a statement saying that the 23-year-old was reported missing after he went on a night out with his friends last week on Thursday (Dec 14).

The police officials carried out “extensive enquiries” into the matter, including viewing CCTV footage, speaking to witnesses and analysing telephonic and financial data.&nbsp;

After the water searches, which were carried out by the police divers in the water in South Quay, a body was recovered which was believed to be that of Bhatia.

“Gurashman's death is being treated as unexpected, and while there is nothing to suggest it was suspicious, we will ensure our investigation is as thorough as possible to confirm this,” said Detective Chief Superintendent (DCI) James Conway, responsible for local policing in the Tower Hamlets area of Canary Wharf.

“Because of this, we are releasing a CCTV image of Gurashman that was taken before his disappearance and would like anyone who may have seen him in the Marsh Wall area on the evening of Thursday, 14 December and in the early hours of Friday, 15 December, to contact us,” he said.

Further calling the outcome of the inquiry "extremely tragic", Conway said that it was not the news he was hoping to give to Bhatia's family and friends.

“I send them my deepest condolences,” he said.

The Iranian government has come up with new plans to clamp down on women who are defying the hijab dress code.

As per documents obtained by BBC Persian from the months of April and May, the government might plan on setting up "mobile courts" to punish the ones violating the dress code.

The documents reveal that even schoolgirls and celebrities would face the brunt of the dress code breach with girls facing action by the education ministry and celebrities being charged up to 10-year-imprisonment over "promoting corruption".

According to BBC Persian, Iran's government has not yet commented on these reports.

However, an Iranian newspaper that published a concise section of one of the directives has been charged with publicising classified documents.

Out of those, some directives were incorporated in the controversial "Hijab and Chastity Bill" which at present is under review by the Guardian Council watchdog before being converted into a law.

As per the leaked documents, Interior Minister Ahmad Vahidi gave the go-ahead to a slew of directives&nbsp;to coordinate action by the government and other entities in order to address the issue of women not adorning hijabs, months prior to when the parliament began debating the hijab bill.

Although the protests faded early this year following a massive crackdown on dissenters, many women continued to flout the hijab rules in public.

Singapore witnessed a record rise in the number of coronavirus cases in the first week of December, after which the Ministry of Health (MOH) released a statement "strongly encouraging" people to wear a mask.

The Covid-19 cases rose to 56,043, between Dec 3 to 9, which was 75 per cent more than what was recorded in the previous week at 32,035.

The average daily hospitalisations rose from 225 to 350 whereas the average daily cases in the intensive care unit spiked from four to nine.

The Singapore government said that the dominant variant reported in the majority of cases was JN.1, which was a sublineage of BA.2.86.

"Based on the available international and local data, there is currently no clear indication that BA.2.86 or JN.1 are more transmissible or cause more severe disease than other circulating variants," MOH said in a statement.&nbsp;

The ministry also urged people to exercise personal and social responsibility stating that people who are down with acute respiratory infection symptoms should refrain from contact with others and stay at home.

“To preserve our healthcare capacity, MOH has been working with public hospitals for contingency planning, including ensuring adequate manpower and deferring of non-urgent electives to maximise bed capacity for urgent cases in need of acute care," according to the statement.

Singapore's health ministry also said in a statement that it was working with the hospitals to devise contingency planning in order to provide patients with immediate care.

"In addition, hospitals are tapping on step-down facilities like Transitional Care Facilities and alternative care models like Mobile Inpatient Care@Home (MIC@Home) to ensure proper right-siting of patients," MOH said.

South Korean residents expressed concerns on Monday (Dec 18) after temperatures in Seoul plummeted in an unexpected descent.

“Just last week, I wore short-sleeved clothing... suddenly, within a day, it became extremely cold,” said graduate student Lee Seo-hyun from a central area of the capital, where pedestrians were seen wearing puffer jackets and gloves.

Temperatures in Seoul touched a record low of minus 12.2 degrees Celsius on Monday and were forecast to go down to minus 7 degrees Celsius on Tuesday (Dec 19), as per the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA).

On the contrary, Seoul reached 16.8 degrees Celsius on Dec 8, which was the second-highest temperature recorded in December since 1968, according to South Korean news agency Yonhap.

Residents, expressing concern over the unprecedented swing in temperature, said that they were confused about the clothing to wear as just a few weeks back, the temperature was so warm that wearing a jacket was not even an option and within a day the temperature dipped low.

“Just last week, I wore short-sleeved clothing and because it was so warm I either carried my coat or left it behind. But suddenly, within a day, it became extremely cold, and now I'm concerned about the Earth,” graduate student Lee Seo-Hyun said.

“In a situation where the vulnerable are unprepared and the weather suddenly changes, there might be many people facing urgent circumstances without enough time to prepare. Actually, it happened in the summer. So, it could happen again this winter as well, so I’m worried about that,” news agency Reuters quoted Lee Dong-Jun, an office worker, as saying.

As per The Korea Times, the cold weather conditions are expected to continue throughout the week and "morning lows are expected to hover between -17 degrees and 2 degrees nationwide".
