In a major development from Yemen, the warring parties in the long-running conflict in the Middle Eastern country committed to a new ceasefire and also agreed to engage in a UN-led peace process that would put an end to the fighting, the UN special envoy for Yemen released a statement saying on Saturday (Dec 23).

The envoy, Hans Grundberg, "welcomes the parties' commitment to a set of measures to implement a nation-wide ceasefire, improve living conditions in Yemen, and engage in preparations for the resumption of an inclusive political process under UN auspices," he said in a statement.&nbsp;

The decision was announced after a series of meetings with the parties in Saudi Arabia and Oman.

Yemen has been under the grip of the conflict since Iran-backed Houthis seized control of the capital Sanaa in the year 2014, which further triggered a Saudi-led military intervention in support of the beleaguered government the following year.

Last year, the United Nations brokered a ceasefire deal that came into effect in the month of April which further brought a sharp reduction in hostilities. The truce deal expired in October last year, though fighting largely remains on hold.

Grundberg will now "engage with the parties to establish a roadmap under UN auspices" that includes these commitments.

"Yemenis are watching and waiting for this new opportunity to provide for tangible results and progress towards lasting peace," Grundberg said.

"The parties have taken a significant step. Their commitments are, first and foremost, an obligation to the Yemeni people."

The development comes in the midst of a series of attacks by Houthi rebels targeting key shipping lanes in the Red Sea in solidarity with Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

The Houthis have pledged to attack Israel-linked vessels or ships heading to Israeli ports unless an end is brought to the Israel-Hamas war that started on Oct 7.

As per the Pentagon, they have launched more than 100 drone and missile attacks, targeting 10 merchant vessels involving more than 35 different countries.

"Only because they (people here) studied English, today they earn fat salaries in IT companies. They say 'Hindi Hindi'. You know well who build buildings. Those who study only Hindi in Bihar build houses for us in Tamil Nadu, sweep roads and clean toilets," he said in the video that took the internet by storm.

He then went on to cite the example of Google CEO Sundar Pichai, who is a native of Tamil Nadu saying that had he learnt only Hindi language, he would have ended up being employed in the construction sector as a worker.

Gaza officials on Saturday (Dec 23) said that the Israeli strikes had claimed the lives of more than 200 people in 24 hours amidst an upsurge in attacks in the West Bank.

Israel continued with its counter-offensive aiming at the southern Gaza Strip, with clouds of grey and black smoke rising over Khan Yunis city, as per news agency AFP reports.

In the past 24 hours, at least 201 deaths were reported by the health ministry in Hamas-run Gaza, taking the toll to 20,258 since the war broke out, and most of the victims were women and children as per claims by Hamas.

The fighting between the two sides began when the Palestinian militant group Hamas launched unprecedented attacks against Israel on Oct 7, killing about 1,140 Israelis, mostly civilians.

Israel, in response, launched retaliatory attacks vowing to destroy the Palestinian militant group.

Saturday's strikes came after the United Nations Security Council approved a resolution demanding "immediate, safe and unhindered" deliveries of life-saving aid to Gaza "at scale".&nbsp;

It also called for the creation of "conditions for a sustainable cessation of hostilities", but did not seek an immediate end to combat.

The Gaza health ministry said dozens of Palestinians were killed this week and publicly "executed" in northern Gaza.

The Consulate General of India in San Francisco has condemned&nbsp;the act and called for an immediate probe into the matter by the US authorities.

In a post shared on X, the Consulate General of India in San Francisco stated, "We strongly condemn the defacing of SMVS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir at Newark, California with anti-India graffiti. This incident has hurt the sentiments of the Indian community. We have pressed for quick investigation and prompt action against the vandals by the US authorities in this matter."

The Newark Police Service has started&nbsp;a probe into the matter.

As per the temple administration, the vandalism took place on Thursday night.

"One of the devotees, who lives close to the shrine, discovered anti-Hindu and anti-India graffiti in black ink on an exterior wall of the building, and the local administration was immediately informed," news agency ANI quoted Bhargav Raval, the spokesperson for the temple administration as saying.

The spokesperson revealed that the temple authorities were extremely shocked to find the anti-Indian graffiti on its wall.

Sharing more details regarding the incident, Jonathan Arguello, a police captain for the city of Newark, said the 'targeted act' was being probed.

"Based on the graffiti, we believe it was a targeted act, and it's going to be investigated with full thoroughness. I can also tell you that as a member of the Newark Police Department and the Newark community, we're deeply saddened when these types of acts occur, and we think they're senseless and they have no room. We won't tolerate them here in Newark. So today, I wanted to make sure that you understand how seriously we take these situations and know that we will investigate as thoroughly as possible with utmost care and sensitivity. I can also tell you that officers are currently investigating this via evidence collection," the captain told reporters during a press conference.

He also said that the authorities were picking up clues leading to the incident and that the footage from CCTV surveillance cameras was also being looked into.

"Our policies that any acts of violence or threats of violence, property damage, harassment, intimidation, or other crimes motivated by hate or bias are considered very serious and given the utmost care. We're handling this investigation as a hate crime at this point, based on our conversations with you and the physical evidence we've seen," said Arguello.

Recently, a surge in the number of new COVID subvariant JN.1 in India has raised concerns among people. Amidst this, doctors from New Delhi's All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) have advised people to not panic and rather remain vigilant.

"People are getting infected by the new sub-variant of COVID-JN.1 in many states of the country. The symptoms of the patients are mild. Therefore, there is no need to panic but the need to remain alert," Dr Neeraj Nischal said.

Dr Nischal, who is an Additional Professor in the Department of Medicine at AIIMS Delhi, said, "We have been saying this type of ripple will keep on happening. Even during the first and second waves, we predicted that this virus would mutate further and the stage would come where it would become more infectious but at the same time cause less mortality or morbidity."

"So this is, you can say, a fight between the viruses in human beings who are also trying to survive. People are becoming infected but at the same time, it's not causing the problem that its predecessors, like the delta variant, caused," said the doctor.

"The important thing is that we are more aware of this virus and that we know how to deal with it. So if you see cases increasing, that shows that our surveillance system is in place, and we can pick up any new surge or any new variant that is coming into our society. So this should not be a cause for panic. This only shows how well we are prepared now and I think we should be able to handle this in a good way," he added.

Dr Nischal further said, "From the data that is emerging, the new subvariant is not very different from omicron. We are looking into whether the virus is causing similar types of symptoms like coughing, cold, sneezing, fever, and body aches."

<h2>Doctors probing intensity of infection</h2>

The doctors further said that they were probing if the subvariant was causing serious lung damage, if it was generating the need for oxygen requirements or if the patients needed hospitalisation.

"There are certain pockets in the country where we are witnessing cases, but that cannot be generalised for the country. So it's good. We have a good surveillance system in place and we can contain this disease and that's the most important thing," added the doctor.

"I will not say that we are seeing an increased number of COVID cases in our OPD it's not like that. We do witness a lot of common cold and flu patients this season. So this is a generalised type of respiratory infection that happens during the winter so there is nothing new that we are witnessing at the moment," he said.

"I won't be saying that we are witnessing an increased number of cases or something serious about patients. No, it's the routine cases that we see every winter. That's what we are witnessing now," he added.

Even during the first and second waves, we predicted that this virus would mutate further and the stage would come where it would become more infectious but at the same time cause less mortality or morbidity." "So this is, you can say, a fight between the viruses in human beings who are also trying to survive. People are becoming infected but at the same time, it's not causing the problem that its predecessors, like the delta variant, caused," said the doctor. "The important thing is that we are more aware of this virus and that we know how to deal with it. So if you see cases increasing, that shows that our surveillance system is in place, and we can pick up any new surge or any new variant that is coming into our society. So this should not be a cause for panic. This only shows how well we are prepared now and I think we should be able to handle this in a good way," he added. Dr Nischal further said, "From the data that is emerging, the new subvariant is not very different from omicron. We are looking into whether the virus is causing similar types of symptoms like coughing, cold, sneezing, fever, and body aches." "There are certain pockets in the country where we are witnessing cases, but that cannot be generalised for the country. So it's good. We have a good surveillance system in place and we can contain this disease and that's the most important thing," added the doctor. "I will not say that we are seeing an increased number of COVID cases in our OPD it's not like that. We do witness a lot of common cold and flu patients this season. So this is a generalised type of respiratory infection that happens during the winter so there is nothing new that we are witnessing at the moment," he said. "I won't be saying that we are witnessing an increased number of cases or something serious about patients. No, it's the routine cases that we see every winter. She then took to her official social media account saying that she would file an appeal against the ruling with the Supreme Court.&nbsp;

Duntsova submitted her application on Wednesday (Dec 20) to challenge incumbent President Vladimir Putin in the country’s upcoming elections in March 2024.&nbsp;

Duntsova, in an interview with Reuters last month, called for an end to the war and the release of political prisoners, including opposition leader Alexei Navalny.&nbsp;

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin said that the state government has taken all possible precautions and measures for the welfare of the people in the wake of the situation.

"Heavy rainfall was received in Chennai and surrounding districts. In history, we have never seen this much rainfall in the Thoothukudi district. For rescue operations, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been deployed," CM Stalin said.

He further said that as many as 12,653 people have been rescued and are staying at the 14 relief camps.

"I have advised district collectors and the official to immediately provide food and other needful items to those who were staying in relief camps," he added.

The CM further said that he has requested excess money for the southern districts of the state from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Earlier, Indian Navy personnel distributed food and other relief materials at Srivaikundam railway station in Thoothukudi on December 19.

Heavy rain wreaked havoc in Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, and Kanyakumari in the past days. The state government and the Centre have jointly mobilised a massive rescue and relief operation to help the affected people.

As per a lawsuit filed on Thursday (Dec 21), the action star is accused of sexually assaulting his assistant in an Atlanta hotel room over ten years ago.

This lawsuit is the latest in a series of claims lodged with courts in California, which extended the length of time in which legal action can be taken in cases of alleged sexual crimes.

Asta Jonasson alleged that her very first assignment after being hired by the actor's company was to travel to Atlanta in September 2010 during the shooting of "Fast Five" where she was asked to help Diesel leave a hotel in the early morning hours after entertaining multiple women in a suite before paparazzi were alerted to his whereabouts.

"Alone in the hotel suite with him, Vin Diesel sexually assaulted Ms Jonasson. Vin Diesel forcibly grabbed Ms Jonasson, groped her breasts, and kissed her. Ms Jonasson struggled continually to break free of his grasp, while repeatedly saying no."

"Vin Diesel then escalated his assault," the suit said, with the actor trying to pull down his assistant's underwear. &nbsp;

"The message was clear. Ms Jonasson was fired for courageously resisting Vin Diesel's sexual assault, Vin Diesel would be protected, and his sexual assault covered up," the suit said.

The civil suit seeks unspecified damages against Diesel, Vincent and their companies.

Diesel's lawyer Bryan Freedman said his client "categorically denies this claim in its entirety" and that there is evidence that "completely refutes" the allegations, as per a statement published by Variety.

Jonasson has waived the right to anonymity customarily granted to victims of alleged sex abuse.
