Prominent Russian nationalist Igor Girkin was on Thursday (Jan 25) convicted by a Moscow court for inciting extremism and jailed for four years.

Girkin, who denied the charges, has strongly condemned President Vladimir Putin for not effectively pursuing the war against Ukraine.

He reportedly had also actively contributed towards instigating the conflict between Kremlin-backed separatists and Kyiv's armed forces in Ukraine's Donbas region in the year 2014.

Moscow City Court said Girkin was found guilty of "public calls to carry out extremist activities", further adding that the 53-year-old would serve his sentence of imprisonment in a general regime colony.

"I serve the Fatherland!" Girkin yelled out after the verdict was read out.

<h2>Arrests outside Moscow court</h2>

As per news agency AFP, police had captured three people, with one of them chanting "Freedom for Girkin!" while others held posters with nationalist slogans.

Calling the accusations against Girkin "absurd", his wife rebuffed the allegations.

"The accusation is absolutely absurd," Girkin's wife Miroslava Reginskaya said.

"My husband is a hero of the Russian Spring," she added, referring to the 2014 pro-Russian unrest in Ukraine.

His lawyer, Alexander Molokhov, called the sentence "an ugly judicial act", and&nbsp;said he would&nbsp;appeal against the verdict soon.

Girkin was arrested in 2023 over the charges of "extremism" after months of public attacks on Russian troops.

He had also denounced Russian President Vladimir Putin for not pushing an offensive aggressive enough against Ukraine.

Dubbing Putin "an old idiot", he took to his social media handle and said that the "country will not survive another six years of this cowardly mediocrity in power", before being arrested.

Girkin's detention was considered a prominent example of how Russia was suppressing the nationalist critics.

During his pre-trial custody, he launched a campaign to challenge Putin in the next presidential election scheduled to be held in March.

While in jail, he gave an interview to the Russian media, where he said that the country had "entered a period of acute instability" and faced "imminent catastrophe".

India's President Droupadi Murmu, on the eve of the nation's 75th Republic Day, approved 80 gallantry awards including 12 posthumous ones.

These consist of six Kirti Chakras, including three posthumous; 16 Shaurya Chakras, including two posthumous; 53 Sena Medals, including seven posthumous; one Nao Sena Medal (Gallantry); and four Vayu Sena Medals (Gallantry).

The Kirti Chakra is considered as India's second-highest peacetime gallantry award after Ashok Chakra, whereas, Shaurya Chakra is the country's third-highest peacetime gallantry award.

She also approved 311 defence decorations to military and other personnel.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday (Jan 25) said that the Congress party had become 'soft Naxalite' and that their slogans no longer align with the Gandhian philosophy or principles.

"Congress' politics has become 'soft Naxalite'. Their slogans don't reflect Gandhian principles anymore. I too was in Congress for 22 years. But it never had such slogans earlier. Congress had a soft slogan. I see that they have killed even the soul of Congress. Entire carcade was full of so-called Left people, Left-leaning people," Sarma said during a media briefing.

He further accused Rahul Gandhi of using a body double for his Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra (United India Justice March).

He alleged that the Congress leader sits inside a room created in the bus while the one who waves at the world is Rahul Gandhi's lookalike, reported some media houses.

"I have not seen but I have seen reports. Congress people told me that Rahul Gandhi generally sits inside the bus. Then who is sitting in the front who looks like Rahul Gandhi from far? This is another issue," he said.

"You people (media) think that you're clicking Rahul Gandhi's photos, but in reality, it is his body double," Sarma&nbsp;added.

He also accused the grand old party of instigating a communal clash in Assam.&nbsp;

"What was this Yatra? Look at its timing. They had hatched a conspiracy to instigate a major communal clash in Assam. We had a glimpse of it in Guwahati. But their big conspiracy was to cross through Assam during the Ram Temple Pranpratishtha and a clash ensued in the state. But the people of our party and Ram Bhakts restrained themselves. They did not let anything untoward happen in Assam...I would like to tell Rahul Gandhi...people of Assam will see you in Lok Sabha for your arrogance," said the Assam chief minister.

"I give you this commitment today - Congress will get an even lesser number of seats in Assam and we will defeat them with a good margin. I promise you this today," he said in the presser.

Earlier, the Congress party's yatra was barred from entering the northeast Indian city of Guwahati on Tuesday (Jan 23) which led to clashes between the party workers and police officers.

Sarma took to his official X account and said that he had instructed DGP GP Singh to register a case against Rahul Gandhi for provoking the crowd to break barricades.

"I have instructed @DGPAssamPolice to register a case against your leader @RahulGandhi for provoking the crowd," the chief minister posted on 'X' in response to a post of Youth Congress president Srinivas BV.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday (Jan 25) gifted a replica of the Ram Temple to French President Emmanuel Macron in Rajasthan's Jaipur.

Macron, who is on a two-day official visit to India, will be the chief guest at the 75th Republic Day celebrations to be held in New Delhi on Friday.

It is pertinent to note that the grand, star-studded consecration ceremony of the Ram Temple was held in Uttar Pradesh's Ayodhya on Monday (Jan 22) with PM Modi performing the main rituals.

<h2>PM Modi, Marcon hold mega roadshow in Jaipur</h2>

Both leaders held a mega roadshow on the streets of the pink city and were welcomed by citizens in large numbers.

The crowd also showered flower petals on PM Modi and French President Macron.

Following the roadshow, the Indian prime minister and the French president visited Hawa Mahal, also known as the 'Palace of Breeze', which was built in the year 1799 as an extension to the Royal City Palace of Jaipur.

After this, the two interacted over a cup of tea at a local shop and the French President made the payment through UPI.&nbsp;

PM Modi then explained the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) digital payments system to the French President.

PM Modi took to his official social media and hailed ties between India and France. He said that it was a matter of great pride that French President Emmanuel Macron will be taking part in the 75th Republic Day celebrations in New Delhi on Friday (Jan 26).

He further expressed&nbsp;happiness that the French leader commenced his visit to India from Jaipur, which is a city known for its rich culture and heritage.

"Welcome to India, my friend President @EmmanuelMacron. I am happy that President Macron begins his India visit from Jaipur in Rajasthan, a land with rich culture, heritage and talented people," he wrote on X.

Havildar Pawan Kumar of 55 Rashtriya Rifles Grenadiers was part of an operation in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama district on Feb 27 last year.

During a room intervention exercise, he neutralised a terrorist and injured another in a hand-to-hand fight while laying down his own life.

He received the Kirti Chakra award posthumously.

She then said that the democratic system in the country was much older than even the concept of Western democracy, dubbing it the reason why India was called the "mother of democracy".

"Tomorrow is the day when we celebrate the commencement of the Constitution. Its Preamble begins with the words 'We, the People of India', highlighting the theme of the document, namely, democracy. In India, the democratic system is much older than the concept of Western democracy. That is the reason why India is called the "mother of democracy," she said.

President Murmu also&nbsp;remembered&nbsp;how leaders as well officials contributed towards framing&nbsp;"our splendid and inspiring" Constitution.

"My heartiest greetings to all of you on the eve of the 75th Republic Day! My heart is filled with pride when I look back and see how far we have travelled despite adversities. The 75th year of the Republic is truly a historic milestone in the journey of the nation in many ways. This is an especially festive occasion, just as we celebrated the unique greatness and diverse culture of our nation during the Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav when we completed 75 years of Independence," she said.

President Murmu in her address also remembered the contributions of former Bihar Chief Minister Karpoori Thakur, who on Tuesday (Jan 23) was conferred Bharat Ratna posthumously.

"I would like to mention here that the celebration of the birth centenary of a tireless champion of social justice, Shri Karpoori Thakurji, concluded yesterday. Karpooriji was one of the greatest advocates of the backward classes who dedicated his life to their welfare. His life was a message. I pay my tribute to Karpoori Ji for enriching public life through his contributions," the President said.

<h2>'Amrit Kaal is period of epochal transformation'</h2>

The Indian President noted that the period of 'Amrit Kaal' - the period leading to the centenary of Independence - had provided people with an opportunity to help the country scale new heights as every individual's contribution would be crucial in achieving the goals.

"The nation is in the early years of Amrit Kaal, the period leading to the centenary of Independence. This is the time of an epochal transformation. We are given a golden opportunity to take the country to new heights. Contribution from every citizen will be crucial to achieve our goals. For this, I will appeal to all my fellow citizens to abide by our Fundamental Duties enshrined in the Constitution," the President said.

"These duties are essential obligations of every citizen towards making Bharat a developed nation when it completes 100 years of independence. Here, I think of Mahatma Gandhi who had rightly said, 'No people have risen who thought only of rights. Only those did so who thought of duties'," she added.

She also spoke about the challenges posed by technological advances like Artificial Intelligence.

"The period of Amrit Kaal is also going to be the period of unprecedented technological changes. Technological advances like Artificial Intelligence and machine learning have moved from headlines into our daily lives at a breathtaking speed. There are numerous areas of concern in the foreseeable future, but there are also exciting opportunities ahead, especially for the youth," said the President.

Cardinal Gerald Lacroix is facing allegations in&nbsp;Canada&nbsp;that he sexually assaulted a female teenager, as part of a class action lawsuit against the archdiocese of Quebec, court documents showed Thursday.&nbsp;

The 66-year-old Lacroix, the archbishop of Quebec since 2011 and a cardinal since 2014, is facing claims of abuse dating back to 1987 and 1988, when the victim was 17, attorney Alain Arsenault, who is handling the suit, told AFP.

The legal action, an updated filing of a case first brought in 2022, features testimony from 147 people who claim they were sexually assaulted by more than 100 priests in the archdiocese, some of them high-ranking clergy, his law firm said in a statement.

The new filing reflects the addition of 46 victims, and names more than a dozen new suspects.

The archdiocese of Quebec did not immediately respond to AFP requests for comment.&nbsp;

In the original suit, cardinal Marc Ouellet was accused of sexually abusing a female intern from 2008 to 2010.&nbsp;

Ouellet, who persistently denied what he called "defamatory" allegations, resigned in January 2023 from his position at the Vatican due to his age.&nbsp;
