<p>James Webb Space Telescope has been undergoing a six month preparation period in which its instruments are being calibrated and its various mirrors are being carefully aligned to give us the best peek into the Universe.</p>

<p>The scientific community got a scare after a small meteoroid struck one of the mirrors of the telescopes in May. NASA has said that this created a small but noticeable effect on the data coming from the telescope. Realignment of &nbsp;the mirror was carried out.</p>

<p>In spite of the micro-meteoroid impact, NASA said the space telescope was “performing at a level that exceeds all mission requirements.”</p>

<p>This means that we may be in for a treat once first pictures from the telescope are released!</p>

First colour images from James Webb telescope to be released soon

<p>In the first peer-reviewed study of its kind, researchers from the United Kingdom have drawn a conclusion that Omicron variant of coronavirus is less likely to cause long COVID than previous variants. Researchers from King's College, London have carried out this study.&nbsp;</p>

<p>For the study, researchers used data from the ZOE COVID symptom study app. They found that odds of long COVID from Omicron were 20 to 50 per cent less than Delta. There was a variance in the figure depending to age and timing of last vaccination of a patient.</p>

<p>Long COVID, which includes prolonged symptoms ranging from fatigue to 'brain fog', can be debilitating and continue for weeks or months. It is increasingly being recognised as a public health problem, and researchers have been racing to find out if Omicron presents as big a risk of long COVID as previously dominant variants.</p>

<p>"It's good news, but please don't decommission any of your long COVID services," lead researcher Dr Claire Steves told Reuters, appealing to health-service providers.</p>

<p>The UK's Office for National Statistics said in May that 438,000 people in the country have long COVID after Omicron infection, representing 24% of all long COVID patients.</p>

<p>It also said the risk of lingering symptoms after Omicron was lower than with Delta, but only for double-vaccinated people. It found no statistical difference for those who were triple vaccinated.</p>

At an intersection near Taipei's famous 101 building, a giant foodpanda tells people, “Just to let you know … this red light will make you wait 115 seconds.” The advertisement jokingly tells people to order dinner while they wait for the light to turn green.</p>

Taipei cuts traffic-light wait time for relief from summer heat

<p>France has not received any Russian natural gas through pipeline since June 15, said GRTgaz, a network operator. The development has followed Russian gas giant Gazprom's warning earlier this week about cutting delivery of gas to Europe. Gazprom maintains that reduction in supply is due to repair work, but the move is widely perceived to be a political one.</p>

<p>Experts have been quoted in media reports saying that Russia is seeking to put pressure on allies of Ukraine.</p>

<p>France is dependent on Russia for 17 per cent of its natural gas.</p>

<p>Supplies had already been reduced by 60 percent since the beginning of this year, sending prices soaring.</p>

<p>But GRTgaz said there was no risk to French supplies currently, with reserves at 56 percent capacity compared with 50 percent in June normally.</p>

<p>French President Emmanuel Macron on Friday returned from Ukraine. This was his first visit to Ukraine since Russian invasion. Macron was accompanied by Italian PM Mario Draghi, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The European Commission on Friday (June 17) recommended a 'candidate' status for Ukraine in the European Union. Russia is fiercely opposed to co-operation between Ukraine and Europe.</p>

<p>In the run-up to the invasion Russian President Vladimir Putin had expressed his opposition to Ukraine joining NATO.</p>

France no longer receiving Russian gas via pipelines, says network operator 

<p>Former US president Barack Obama has posted a beautiful video on his Instagram account. The video has been shot in Copenhagen, Denmark, where Obama paid a visit to recently for Copenhagen Democracy Summit. The video was shot just outside the hotel Obama was staying in.</p>

<p>The video featured a group of women, a choir group, singing beautifully in harmony. For the uninitiated, it would be hard to guess the song. But music doesn't have boundaries of language. And though the song is in Danish language, the beauty of the tune and singing of the women is enough for anyone to fall in love with the song.</p>

<p>The impromptu singing caught Obama by surprise. He waited to hear the group's song&nbsp;and reacted encouragingly.</p>

<p>"When I was in Copenhagen, I ran into this group of singers who were rehearsing on their balcony. They were fantastic — take a listen." said Obama on Instagram.</p>

<p>"This is a dark day for Press freedom and for British democracy," the group said in a statement, insisting Assange, 50, "did nothing wrong" and was "being punished for doing his job".</p>

<p>The Home Office said his extradition had now been approved but he could still appeal the decision. WikiLeaks said he would.</p>

<p>"In this case, the UK courts have not found that it would be oppressive, unjust or an abuse of process to extradite Mr Assange," the Home Office said in a statement.</p>

<p>"Nor have they found that extradition would be incompatible with his human rights, including his right to a fair trial and to freedom of expression, and that whilst in the U.S. he will be treated appropriately, including in relation to his health."</p>

<p>Wikileaks hit global headlines when it published millions of secret US diplomatic cables and other communication 2009 onwards.</p>

<p>Singapore's Minister of Sustainability and the Environment Grace Fu said that each week, 5 million Aedes mosquitoes will be manufactured. This number is up from 2 million per week.</p>

<p>The plan has been given name Project Wolbachia. The project will cover 1400 more blocks in July in addition to 1800 already covered.</p>

<p>Grace Fu announced expansion of the project at Asia Dengue Summit in Singapore.</p>

<p>“Dengue and other mosquito-borne viruses are no longer just a problem of the tropics. Unconfined by borders or socioeconomic lines, they will challenge communities around the world,” she said.</p>

<p>In Singapore, there have been 1400 cases of dengue fever this year. Surge in cases has been seen in March. This is earlier than usual dengue season from June to October.</p>

Singapore to unleash lab-grown mosquitoes to tackle growing cases of dengue

<p>World Health Organisation (WHO) reported on Thursday (June 16) that global COVID fatalities had seen a spike of 4 per cent last week. The spike has been observed after five weeks of declining death toll.</p>

<p>WHO issued its weekly assessment on Thursday. The agency said that 8700 Covid-19 deaths were registered last week. There has been a jump of 21 per cent in the Americas and a 17 per cent increase in Western Pacific.</p>

<p>The number of cases however, has seen a fall. 3.2 million new cases were reported last week. This has been as per the trend seen since January when there was a peak in infections.</p>

<p>However, West Asia and Southeast Asia saw a spike in number of cases by 58 per cent and 33 per cent respectively.</p>

<p>Because many countries have reduced surveillance and testing, we know this number is under-reported, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said earlier this week.</p>

<p>He said that there was nothing such as an acceptable level of COVID deaths especially since the world now has vaccines, medicines and diagnostics against the virus.</p>

<p>While many rich countries in Europe and North America have mostly dropped their virus restrictions, China's extreme Covid-19 policies have meant more mass testing, quarantines and sequestering of anyone who was in contact with a case.</p>

<p>China's capital put school back online this week in one of its major districts amid a new Covid-19 outbreak linked to a nightclub.</p>

<p>Residents in Beijing are still undergoing regular testing mostly every other day and must wear masks and swipe a mobile phone app to enter public places and facilitate case tracing.</p>

<p>Some theories say that Hydroxyl ion on the Moon are mainly formed due to Hydrogen atoms in the Solar wind that hits the Moon.</p>

<p>The research paper said that while one-third of the Hydroxyl ions in the sample taken by Chang'E came from solar wind, rest of the Hydroxyl content came from a mineral on the Moon called apatite. In other words, water found on Moon is native to the Moon!</p>

It's confirmed, water on Moon is native to it

<p>A star when alive and kicking, can literally be life-giver in its planetary system. Take for example the Solar System. The Sun created the planetary system, and endowed Earth with life itself. The planets peacefully revolve around the star and everything is somewhat alright.</p>

<p>But astronomers have now observed a dead star who is involved in what is being called 'cosmic cannibalism. The dead star is ripping apart its own planetary system.</p>

<p>The star is called G238-44. It is a White Dwarf star. Normal star the size of our Sun, on completion of its life, becomes a White Dwarf.</p>

<p>However, prior to becoming a White Dwarf, such star becomes Red Giant. In this phase, it expands rapidly and disrupts orbits of the planets revolving around it. This sends them on a haywire path.</p>

<p>What's happening, in this case, is that the planets are disintegrating due to the tidal forces of the White Dwarf. The result is total chaos with planetary material falling onto the White Dwarf star.</p>

<p>We may get to witness this cosmic process from afar but 5 billion years in future when&nbsp;the Solar System will meet the same fate.</p>

The dead star is ripping apart its own planetary system. The star is called G238-44. It is a White Dwarf star. Normal star the size of our Sun, on completion of its life, becomes a White Dwarf. However, prior to becoming a White Dwarf, such star becomes Red Giant. In this phase, it expands rapidly and disrupts orbits of the planets revolving around it. This sends them on a haywire path. What's happening, in this case, is that the planets are disintegrating due to the tidal forces of the White Dwarf. The result is total chaos with planetary material falling onto the White Dwarf star. We may get to witness this cosmic process from afar but 5 billion years in future when the Solar System will meet the same fate.
