Government in western Indian state of Maharashtra was widely considered to be in trouble after one of the key ministers in the coalition reportedly went incommunicado. In the 288-member Maharashtra Assembly, Shiv Sena has 55 MLAS, NCP (53), Congress (44), Bahujan Vikas Agahdi (three), Samajwadi Party, AIMIM and Prahar Janshakti Party two each. MNS, CPI-M, PWP, Swabhimani Paksha, Rashtriya Samaj Party, Jansurajya Shakti Party and Krantikari Shetkari Paksha have one MLA each. There are 13 independent MLAs.

Sharad Pawar, former union minister and influential figure in forming the ruling coalition said that this was an attempt to pull down state government.&nbsp;

He also said that Uddhav Thackeray will handle the situation which is an internal matter of the Sena.

As Sena struggled to quell the unrest, party MP Sanjay Raut claimed that contact has been established with Shinde, who he described as a "loyal Shiv Sainik of Balasaheb Thackeray".

The sudden disappearance of Shinde and some party MLAs prompted Chief minister Uddhav Thackeray to call an urgent meeting with party legislators and leaders at 'Varsha', his official residence, in Mumbai.

Nouhoum Togo, head of a party in Bankass, the main town in the area, said the toll was even higher than the 132 announced by the government, which has blamed Al-Qaeda-affiliated jihadists for the killings.&nbsp;

The national authorities broke their silence on Monday afternoon after alarming reports proliferated on social networks over the weekend.

Togo told AFP that army operations in the area two weeks ago had led to clashes with jihadists. On Friday, the jihadists returned on several dozen motorbikes to take revenge on the population, he added.

The shootout took place in Texcaltitlan, a town 63 miles southwest of Mexico City.

“A primate was killed at the scene, which was presumably owned by a criminal who was also killed at the scene,” said state prosecutors in a statement.

“An autopsy will be carried out on the animal by a veterinarian specialised in the species”, the State of Mexico added.

Drug cartels are a major issue in Mexico. Members of these cartels are often well-armed smugglers. These cartels even have political and financial influence. Police in Mexico face huge challenges while trying to control the drugs trade.

In the encounter that took place on Mexico, it is being reported that members of Familia Michoacana cartel were involved. In addition to the monkey, 11 gang members were dead, several sustained injuries. Seven were arrested.

Police forces all over the country are also on high alert. Massive traffic jams were reported in several parts of Delhi-NCR, particularly at Delhi-Gurugram and Delhi-Noida borders due to increased security checks by police. Nearly 530 trains were cancelled on Monday. These included 348 passenger trains and 181 Mail/Express trains, the Railways Ministry said.

What is the Agneepath Scheme and What are the key changes made by Centre?

Agneepath Scheme is a recruitment process announced&nbsp;by the Indian government&nbsp;in which youths between the ages of 17-and-a-half and 21 years would get an opportunity to work with the Indian armed forces. It will be a&nbsp;four-year commitment at the end of which&nbsp;25 per cent of the recruits will be&nbsp;retained for regular service. The recruits will be called 'Agniveers'.

In other news, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar said his government will provide “guaranteed” employment to ‘Agniveers’ after their four year stint in the armed forces.&nbsp;Khattar said, “I announce that anyone (the Agniveers) who wants to join Haryana government services, they will be given a guaranteed job, no one will go without a job. We take guarantee for this.” The chief minister said the ‘Agniveers’ will be absorbed in the state’s Group C services and in the police force. BJP leader Harduik Patel&nbsp;and Union Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs and Culture Arjun Meghwal also came out in support of the scheme on Monday, saying they will help 10 Agniveers at a personal level.

The Agniveers will get a monthly salary of Rs 30,000 to Rs 40,000, with 75 per cent of them who get demobilised after four years getting a "Seva Nidhi" exit package of Rs 1.17&nbsp;million. However, the government has made some changes in the scheme,&nbsp;in light of the ongoing protests and confusion among the youth. The upper age limit has now been increased to 23 only for this year due to problems caused in hiring because of the pandemic. Also, proposal to reserve 10 per cent of the job vacancies in the Ministry of Defence has been approved. Also, Union minister Amit Shah has announced that his ministry has decided to give priority to "Agniveers"&nbsp;who will have completed their four years.&nbsp;

Why is the youth protesting against the scheme?&nbsp;

One of the main reasons for protests is the flow of misinformation throughout social media. Internet services are also suspended in states like Haryana and Bihar. However, the government as well as the armed forces are trying to clear out information regarding the scheme. The primary concern among the youth is that the scheme would make the rest 75 per cent of the recruits that would be demobilized, ineligible for pensions, and with an uncertain future, as they would be limited to work for four years. It is also being criticised for failing to provide permanent jobs or healthcare benefits after they retire.&nbsp;

With perseverance, Fitzpatrick delivered his first professional US victory for a long-sought major trophy.

"It's what you grow up dreaming of," Fitzpatrick said. "It's something I've worked so hard for for such a long time. There was a big monkey on my back trying to win over here and everyone, all they ever talked about was that. To do it as a major for my first win -– there's nothing better."

World number 18 Fitzpatrick, who won the 2013 US Amateur at The Country Club, matched Jack Nicklaus as the only US Open and US Amateur winners on the same course, the US legend doing the double at Pebble Beach.

"It means the world," Fitzpatrick said of the achievement.

The 27-year-old from Sheffield, who shared fifth last month at the PGA Championship for his best prior major result, sank a stunning 48-foot birdie putt at the 13th hole to grab a share of the lead.

At the 15th, Fitzpatrick blasted out of the right rough to just inside 19 feet and rolled in a tension-packed putt to reach 6-under and lead by two thanks to a Zalatoris bogey.

"Got a couple of nice breaks on 15 and took advantage of it and that’s what it took in the end," Fitzpatrick said.

After birdies by top-ranked Masters champion Scheffler at 17 and Zalatoris on 16, Fitzpatrick clung to a one-stroke lead at the 18th tee.

The Englishman sent his tee shot into a left fairway bunker, but blasted a magnificent approach to 18 feet and two putted for par.

"I hit a 3-wood into the bunker and if there was one shot I've struggled with this year that I do not want it's a fairway bunker shot," said Fitzpatrick.

"I guess ability just took over. It's one of the best shots I've hit of all time. When I saw it leave the sand and felt the strike I couldn't have been happier."

Zalatoris had a 14-foot birdie putt to force a playoff but when he missed, the record $3.15 million top prize went to Fitzpatrick.

"Matt's shot on 18 is going to be shown probably for the rest of US Open history," Zalatoris said.&nbsp;

"I walked by it and thought that going for it was going to be ballsy, but the fact that he pulled it off and even had a birdie look was just incredible. So hats off to him."

Fitzpatrick has had a workout program to boost his driving distance for the past&nbsp;two years, boosting his shotmaking courage.

"I absolutely backed myself 110 per cent," he said. "I feel like I can compete against anyone out here, particularly over the last two years as I've got longer. Hopefully this is the first step in getting even better."

Japan's Hideki Matsuyama, the 2021 Masters champion, fired the best round of the week, a bogey-free 65, to finish fourth on three-under 277.

Four-time major winner Rory McIlroy and two-time major champion Collin Morikawa shared fifth on 278 while second-ranked Spaniard Jon Rahm, the defending champion, shared 12th on 281 after a closing 74.

Scheffler fired a final-round 67 while Zalatoris, now a three-time runner-up in nine major starts, and third-ranked McIlroy each closed on 69 and seventh-ranked Morikawa, the reigning British Open champion, shot 66.

A pressure group dedicated to those injured or killed while practising the martial art says that 121 judo-related deaths were reported in Japanese schools between 1983 and 2016.

Japan regularly dominates the Olympics judo medal table but federation president Yasuhiro Yamashita told AFP that the values of the sport are being lost as parents and coaches chase short-term glory.

"Judo is a sport that emphasises humanity," said Yamashita, who is also the president of the Japanese Olympic Committee and won gold at the 1984 Los Angeles Games.

"If you see no worth in anything but winning, and the result is all that matters, that gets distorted."

The number of people taking part in judo in Japan has plummeted by almost half since 2004 to about 120,000, according to the federation's figures.

Children account for the steepest decline in numbers.

Reports have emerged of primary school children being forced to lose weight -- sometimes up to six kilogrammes (13 pounds) -- so they can compete in a lighter division.

Young children are taught the same dangerous moves as Olympic athletes and intense training regimes can leave them injured or burnt out.

Parents and coaches have been known to berate referees during matches and corporal punishment still exists, despite reforms in a sport that has been plagued by abuse and bullying scandals over the years.

The All Japan Judo Federation decided to take action in March by cancelling a national tournament for elite children aged between 10 and 12, planning to replace it with events such as lectures and practice sessions.

The backlash was fierce with angry parents and coaches accusing the federation of dashing children's dreams and jeopardising Japan's status as the bastion of judo.

Junior high school student Rion Fukuo, 13, a regional champion last year, told AFP at her judo club in the central Shizuoka region that she "feels sorry" for this year's primary school children who have no tournament to aim for.

Kosuke Moroi, whose 12-year-old daughter attends the same club, said he was "disappointed" when he first heard the news but concluded it was "a good decision" after learning more about the reasons.

Yamashita said scrapping the competition had put a spotlight on "a problem that involves Japanese society".

"It's been two-and-a-half months since we decided to cancel the competition and people are still debating it on TV and in newspapers," he said, adding that most opinions "have been in favour".

Judo and other martial arts were used for military training in Japan before World War II and servicemen would visit schools to give lessons.

Martial arts were banned during the post-war US occupation but they later were recognised as sports, with judo making its Olympic debut at the 1964 Tokyo Games.

"One thing that has stuck to coaching in Japanese sports is that it doesn't use words, it uses violence," she said.

"There's a co-dependence, like with domestic violence, as if being hit is like being shown affection."

Problem parents

Coaches who use corporal punishment can be stripped of their licences but parents are harder to control.

Hisako Kurata, a representative of the Japan Judo Accident Victims Association, said most parents "don't think about the danger and just want their child to win".

"Parents think that if their child wins a title, they'll be happy, they think they're doing it for their child," said Kurata, whose 15-year-old son died in 2011 as a result of a head injury sustained at his high-school judo club.

"The parents end up having the same win-at-all-costs mentality as the judo club and they contribute to it."

Mizoguchi, who has coached in France, said judo was "not fun" for Japanese children and that the "macho culture" surrounding the sport has had its day.

Chinese Defence Ministry has said that the country has carried out a land-based missile interception test. In a brief statement late on Sunday that the test "achieved its expected purpose. The ministry claimed that the test was not aimed at any country.

Under the ambitious scheme overseen by Chinese President Xi Jinping, China is putting a lot of resources into research aimed a developing all sorts of missiles. This ranges for missiles that cand destroy satellites in space to advanced nuclear-tipped ballistic missiles

Beijing has tested missile interceptors before; the most recent previous public announcement of a test was in February 2021, and before that in 2018. State media has said China has conducted anti-missile system tests since at least 2010.

The ministry said in a brief statement late on Sunday that the "ground-based midcourse anti-missile intercept technology" test had been carried out that night.

"The test reached its expected goals," the ministry said. "This test was defensive and not aimed at any country."

It provided no other details.

China, with its allly Russia have repeatedly objected to US deployment of Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) anti-missile system in South Korea.

China argued the equipment's powerful radar could penetrate into its territory.

China has given few details about its own missile programmes, aside from occasional brief statements by the Defence Ministry or in state media.
