<p>Of course, that doesn't mean John has gone soft. Quite the opposite, in fact. He shoots, smashes, slams, stabs, cuts, slashes, and nunchucks his way through countless hordes and hordes of goons sent by High Table's face in the film that is Marquis. It wouldn't be a John Wick movie without some jaw-dropping set pieces, and the film delivers in spades. The action is brutal and beautiful, and on a whole new level in John Wick 4.</p>

From a thrilling half-hour sequence in Osaka that involves the use of (and this list isn't exhaustive at all), hands, crossbows, pistols, revolvers, assault rifles, knives, swords, and nunchucks, to John evading a city-worth of assassins, and my personal favourite, a dreamy, almost ethereal hand-to-hand brawl against the German head of the High Table Killa (Scott Adkins) in a Berlin nightclub amid swaying dancers... it has all the makings of an all-time great action film, eclipsed perhaps only by Mad Max: Fury Road.</p>

<p>From New York to Berlin to Paris, each locale provides a new canvas for Stahelski to deliver visceral mayhem. The choreography is so slick and stunt-work so incredible that they will make your head spin.</p>

<p>John Wick 4 is also a gorgeous-looking film, even beyond the fights and clever camera wizardry. From the neon lights of Osaka to the fiery reds and oranges of a Moroccan desert, John Wick 4 is a veritable symphony of hues. Many important moments suspiciously transpire during the golden hour. The stunning, elegiac imagery here is not something you expect in films like these. You would find yourself wanting to pause to take in all in. I know I did.</p>

<p>I never thought I'd say this about a 169-minute movie, but I want to see John Wick 4 again as soon as possible.</p>

<p><em>Dynasties II</em> is the second season of Sony BBC Earth's celebrated <em>Dynasties </em>series, which puts a narrative spin on the animals that inhabit the earth alongside us in an uneasy peace. While the first season told self-contained stories about chimpanzee, emperor penguin, lion, tiger and African wild dog, the second season introduces the puma, elephant, cheetah, and hyena. And once again David Attenborough, as enthusiastic as ever at 96, is back with his velvety soft voice to ease us into the daily lives of these terrific, majestic animals. What I like about this series (and dare I say franchise?) is it is the lesser-known animals who more often than not leave a stronger impression with their hunting and survival tactics and complex social structures — the reason being, perhaps, that there is less awareness about them.</p>

<h2>Puma takes the top award</h2>

<p>Just like the painted wolves (or the African wild dogs) stole the thunder from the more familiar and charismatic tigers and lions in the first season (for this scribe, anyway), this time it is the puma, also known as the mountain lion or cougar or more poetically, the 'ghost of the mountains' whose story ended up being more affecting. The opening episode, titled simply Puma, takes us to Torres del Paine National Park in Chilean Patagonia. An achingly beautiful place with an immense landscape of towering snow-capped mountains, vast glaciers, turquoise lakes, and sprawling grasslands, it is sparsely inhabited by guanaco (basically llama, only much bigger), South Andean deer, South American gray fox, and of course puma.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Our heroine is Rupestre, a she-puma who has a new litter, the dynasty that she needs to feed and nurture. Feeding them her milk requires her to hunt the much bigger and heavier guanaco. Only one in ten attempts, Attenborough helpfully informs us, is successful. The summers are sunny and warm, but months-long winters are starkly cold with barely any prey. She and her cubs would need to gain weight considerably if they want to have any chance of lasting until spring.</p>

<p>If that wasn't enough, she has to contend with rival females and males that want to mate with her. The former will kill her to eliminate any harm to her cubs and the latter would kill her cubs to make her more willing to mate with them.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Is the old girl up to it all? I suggest watching for yourself and finding out. It is a dramatic story full of great defeats and stratospheric victories. The events that unfolds in Puma and the following episodes would make the writers behind today's TV shows sit up and take notice.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Many take exception to this narrativisation of animal lives and anthromorphisation — basically looking at them with a human-tinted lens.&nbsp;</p>

<p>I happen to like immersive stories involving animals, particularly how the folks at BBC Natural History Unit do it. These stories help convey a sense of how our fellow beings on this planet behave — how they maintain families, protect their young ones, chase away threats, and face the harsh weather and elements. Nothing like weaving in stories to create awareness and appreciation for wildlife. And yes, it can have adverse effects, leading to inaccuracies and oversimplifications of animal behaviour. The trick, which the writers of the Sony BBC Earth films understand intimately, is to balance the storytelling with scientific accuracy.The camera work is outstanding, again</p>

<p>You do not need me to tell you about the quality of wildlife cinematography here. It is, after all, often said that most technological innovations in filmmaking became feasible as a result of the human desire to gain a closer look at wildlife. &nbsp;The photography, using drones and bulky cameras that the crew had to lug around the stark landscape, has seemingly advanced to the point where it cannot get any better. And yet <em>Dynasties II</em> managed to astonish me. The camera work is simply breathtakingly good, enabling us to observe these magnificent animals in unbelievable detail.</p>

It is hard to imagine today that the first film was an indie project that almost did not acquire theatrical distribution (it was not confirmed to hit big screens until two months before it releases). Anyway,<em> John Wick: Chapter 4</em> is almost here, continuing the story of Keanu Reeves' hitman as he takes on the High Table. But before it releases, let's delve into what exactly makes this franchise so great.&nbsp;</p>

<p>David F Sandberg's<em> Shazam! Fury of the Gods</em> has the misfortune to come at a time when the cinematic universe it was a part of, informally dubbed the DCEU or DC Extended Universe, is in its death throes. At the moment, it is not certain that the franchise will transition to the DCU that James Gunn and Peter Safran are building at DC Studios and it is said the commercial performance may be the deciding factor. <em>Shazam! Fury of the Gods </em>is not a bad movie, and is certainly fun, more so than the<strong><a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/hollywood/news-ant-man-and-the-wasp-quantumania-movie-review-formulaic-and-forgettable-paul-rudd-movie-is-a-dud-562974"> last few entries</a></strong> in the rival Marvel Studios movies anyway. The very fact that it is part of a dying cinematic universe may be enough to sink it.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It would have helped if<em> Fury of the Gods </em>were a decent sequel. But the endearing charm that made the original one of the best DCEU entries is missing here.</p>

<p>The bosses at DC and Warner Bros discovery allotted more of those million dollars to the film's budget after the original became a success (not a huge one, mind you, but it was a hit with critics). And it shows. The film is bigger, though not necessarily better. The original's structure was nothing to write home about, and the pacing and tone could be uneven. But <em>Fury of the Gods </em>entirely goes off the rails after a solid first act.</p>

<p><em>Fury of the Gods </em>begins with a rescue operation the Shazam family, dubbed Philadelphia Fiascoes by their fellow inhabitants of the city, undertakes when a bridge is collapsing. It is a hilarious, action-packed beginning that once again reminds us that these are still just kids, playing at superheroes. This fact becomes clearer when the daughters of Atlas attack the city and hold one of them hostage, asking them to return a magical object (there's always a magical object, isn't there? Sigh). However, the film becomes a CGI whirlwind midway with cool moments peppered in.</p>

<h2>Poorly written villains</h2>

<p>It is quite stunning that nearly every modern superhero movie has suffered from bad, uninteresting villains, and still screenwriters creating these stories do not seem to be able to do anything about it. Here, too, the three villainesses, played by three actresses who took this job just for money, seem to have come out straight from a badly written algorithm. It was depressing to watch Dame Helen Mirren made to mouth cookie cutter baddie lines like, "We will annihilate everything. The champions of this realm can do nothing to stop us."&nbsp;</p>

<p>Or something like that. I am just paraphrasing.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Nothing against Mirren, mind you. After decades of great performances, the veteran actress has earned the right to do whatever she wishes. And her very presence does lend a sort of gravitas to this film. Ditto with Lucy Liu. Zegler, on her part, has actually admitted that she took this role because she wanted a job.</p>

The designs and effects are truly wonderful, but the same cannot be said about other CGI. It is all fluid and detailed, for the most part, but it's also too much. Practical effects are few and far between there.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Amidst its otherwise interminable 130-minute runtime, <em>Fury of the Gods</em> does offer some good jokes. Humour is, of course, subjective, so your frequency may vary.&nbsp;The Shazam family's actors, both young and adult (not all of the young ones are kids) having worked together in two films now, share a genuine and effortless chemistry, making their comedic exchanges feel natural and engaging. Also, they are undeniably good actors. And that is one of the few things that works in the movie's favour.</p>

<p>As I said above,&nbsp;<em>Shazam! Fury of the Gods</em> is not a bad movie. Despite its flaws, it had enough humour and heart for me, and I enjoyed it. But keep in mind that it is a huge downgrade from the original. The effortless charm that was there is missing here.&nbsp;</p>

Shazam! Fury of the Gods is not a bad movie, and is certainly fun, more so than the last few entries in the rival Marvel Studios movies anyway. The very fact that it is part of a dying cinematic universe may be enough to sink it. It would have helped if Fury of the Gods were a decent sequel.
