This cannot turn these players, who are used to defeats, into overnight stars, but it can help them do their best. The show, or at least its first season, came as a much-needed balm to many a hurting soul. It was, in effect, the perfect show to watch when there is doom and gloom in the world. It still is. The second season was more intense, but still far more laid-back than most television today.</p>

He makes no pretence of creating action that follows the laws of physics or any such thing. He delivers crazy, outlandish, gravity and logic-defying spectacle that you have to enjoy on his own terms. <em>RRR </em>is the most Rajamouli-ish Rajamouli has ever been. In India, the film was quite a big hit, but we have seen such big, masala-stuffed films before, though nothing on that scale.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The rest of the world? They hadn't. And the movie being available on Netflix made sure the commitment to watch the admittedly fairly long movie wasn't that big. And they simply fell under the spell cast by Rajamouli. As per author and <em>Doctor Strange </em>co-screenwriter C. Robert Cargill said&nbsp;<em>RRR </em>"is a level of spectacle that defies description."</p>

<p>As the world danced to the tunes of 'Naatu Naatu' for the better part of last year, it became increasingly clear to many that the film, and particularly its song, had awards potential, and could even win the biggest cinema honour of them all: an Oscar. The film had been a huge success when it was released in India. The presence of Hindi film stars Devgn and Bhatt made sure that <em>RRR</em>, like Rajamouli's own Baahubali movies, truly became a pan-Indian film.</p>

Many hoped and expected it was going to be <em>RRR</em>. The buzz was at an all-time high after all. But the Film Federation of India chose Pan Nalin's <em>Chhello Show </em>(or Last Film Show) instead.</p>

It was Variance Films' confidence in the film's chances that made <em>RRR </em>an unlikely hopeful for Oscars' major categories. <em>RRR </em>was also promoted to take the Oscar statuette in Best Supporting Actor (Ajay Devgn), Best Supporting Actress (Alia Bhatt), Screenplay, Score, Editing, Cinematography, Sound, Production Design, VFX, and other categories.<br />

Variance Films president Dylan Marchetti told Variety when <em>RRR</em> was snubbed in September last year, “Over the last six months, we have seen the joy that S.S. Rajamouli’s ‘RRR’ has brought to global audiences. We have seen the film gross over $140 million worldwide to become one of India’s highest grossing films of all time and become the first film in history to trend globally on Netflix for over 14 weeks. We have seen the film fill up theaters with cheering audiences months after its initial release, including the historic TCL Chinese IMAX theater in Hollywood, where it will play next Friday to an audience that sold out of one of the largest theaters in the country in just 15 minutes. Most importantly, we have heard fans from around the world tell us that they believe this is one of the best films of the year from any nation. We agree. We proudly invite the Academy to consider RRR in all categories.”</p>

<p>Thankfully, <em>RRR </em>fulfilled all the conditions to be considered in different Oscar categories. An Oscar hopeful project should release in at least one American theatre between 1 January and 31 December of the year (2022 in this year). <em>RRR </em>was released on March 4, 2022. Its most surprising victory, I feel, was in the production design category. It can be said that in that particular category Babylon, Elvis, and The Fabelmans deserved the award more, but All Quiet on the Western Front was no slouch either.&nbsp;</p>

<p>I am of the opinion that The Batman was not even nominated in the Best Original Score category because it is a superhero movie. Roger Deakins agrees. But the movie should have taken the Best Sound Oscar. For the simple fact that it had the best sound effects for any movie. Though, Top Gun: Maverick, which did take the trophy, was not far behind.&nbsp;</p>

<h2>Jamie Lee Curtis: Surprise</h2>

<p>Jamie Lee Curtis was quite fantastic as a dry, bored tax auditor in Everything Everywhere All at Once, though it looked like Angela Bassett (for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever) or Kerry Condon (from The Banshees of Inisherin) might beat her.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Nobody can argue that Brendan Fraser was great in The Whale. But it has to be admitted that that fat suit did the heavy-lifting. It was Colin Farrell who deserved the award for his understated performance in The Banshees of Inisherin. He was incredible in the role, eminently watchable even when there are no words in the scene.</p>

She is indescribably good — portraying the pain, confusion, exhaustion, and other moods with a veteran's ease.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Penned by the series creator Neil Cross and directed by Jamie Payne, who also directed the entirety of the fifth season, the film has Luther's crimes and excesses on duty (and tendency to play fast and loose with the law) finally catching up with him and he goes behind bars. And the person responsible for his downfall is Andy Serkis' psychopathic tech billionaire (I can almost hear Elon Musk gnashing his teeth — the guy has earlier said that he despises how Hollywood portrays billionaires) David Robey, who moonlights as a serial killer.</p>

<p>Once he spots Luther investigating one of his murders, he decides to get him out of the picture. But it's Luther in a Luther movie. The guy is a force of nature. Of course, he gets out and goes on a quest to get Serkis&nbsp;</p>

<p>Now, Robey is a particularly nasty piece of work. Even other serial killers might be horrified by his actions. Having felt powerless for most of his life, he became rich thanks to his tech brilliance. And now he has this need to feel a sense of power and control over his victims. He has created a system in place in which he and his followers witness people being tortured and killed. He is something of a cad (as the Brits would say), all right.</p>

<p><em>Luther: The Fallen Sun</em> is, for all intents and purposes a feature-length season of the show. Whether that is a good thing or not is quite subjective. Speaking for myself, watching Elba once again don that tweed coat and red tie like a superhero costume and brooding on a rooftop with skyscrapers in the background like Batman — it was almost restorative to my cold.</p>

<p>There is action, there are thrills there are same-old outbursts from Luther — for better or worse, he is the same man though slightly mellow — and there is a lot of violence. Being a film with a bigger budget than a typical TV production means that there is a lot more spectacle, albeit a grisly kind of spectacle. People by turns fall to their deaths in Piccadilly Circus, Robey, the sicko that he is, likes to record his victims' dying screams, deriving a twisted sort of pleasure from them later.&nbsp;</p>

<p>There are inconsistencies and plot contrivances, and the story is a touch traditional, without a lot of surprises and moments of oomph. But <em>Luther: The Fallen Sun</em> is still a well-put-together film featuring Elba once again giving a magnetic performance.</p>

<p>Overall,<em> Luther: The Fallen Sun</em> is a worthy addition to the <em>Luther </em>universe, I thought, and a testament to the enduring appeal of Elba's iconic character. While it may not break any new ground, it delivers exactly what fans of the show have come to expect from this franchise: a thrilling, violent, and emotionally resonant crime drama. And one does not need to watch the series to enjoy the film, and it is its own thing.</p>

But will I tell ya something that does last?" Súilleabháin, exasperated and inebriated, asks, "What? And don't say somethin' stupid like music."</p>

It is a quietly affecting meditation on kindness, friendship, conflict, and legacy that is both sad and funny, and often at the same time.&nbsp;</p>

War and interpersonal male conflict, the film posits, are really no different. Their reasons are as meaningless and as irrelevant after a point in time.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"We haven’t been rowing. I don’t think we’ve been rowing. Have we been rowing?" Pádraic responds as an answer to a question from his sister Siobhan (Kerry Condon). Of course, they are rowing. Pádraic just doesn't know it yet. And there comes a point when he becomes a willing participant in this war. And just like all wars, this one is startlingly violent.</p>

<p>Farrell, who I believe owes the resurgence to his Hollywood career to McDonagh, fills Pádraic's character like a shoe. He is incredible in the role, eminently watchable even when there are no words in the scene. The supporting cast, Gleeson, Condon, and Barry Keoghan (in a heartbreaking, moving role), are a match. Oh, and look out for Jenny the donkey!</p>

Pádraic just doesn't know it yet. And there comes a point when he becomes a willing participant in this war. And just like all wars, this one is startlingly violent. Farrell, who I believe owes the resurgence to his Hollywood career to McDonagh, fills Pádraic's character like a shoe. He is incredible in the role, eminently watchable even when there are no words in the scene. The supporting cast, Gleeson, Condon, and Barry Keoghan (in a heartbreaking, moving role), are a match. But with<em> Everything Everywhere All at Once </em>(<em>EEAAO</em> from now on), the hoopla only increased in volume until everybody was talking about this indie movie that was not indie anymore — in terms of box office numbers, that is. The film stars Michelle Yeoh as a harried Chinese immigrant woman called Evelyn Quran Wang whose overwrought life women in India and I imagine many other places in the world would empathise with. She lives with a fractious teenage daughter Joy Wang (Stephanie Hsu), and a meek husband Waymond Wang (Ke Huy Quan).&nbsp;</p>

<p><em>Everything Everywhere All at Once</em> has 11 nominations, including the major categories like Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, and Best Supporting Actor. <p>The multiverse, says alt-Waymond, is in peril because of an evil entity called Jobu Tupaki, and Evelyn is the last hope of all living beings on earth. For Tupaki experiences every reality all at once, can manipulate matter, and has plans to erase every reality from existence.</p>

<p>At this point, you would think the film will turn into a race against time to save the multiverse from the supervillain. It is what most movies of this kind do, after all. But no. <em>EEAAO </em>is a lot smarter than that. It riffs on everything from <em>The Matrix</em> to <em>Ratatouille </em>to Hong Kong martial arts movies, and remains endlessly fresh and inventive. It embraces the gloriously bonkers side of the multiverse, exploring horizons most films delving into similar ideas can barely touch. The two hour and twenty minutes of screen time, which would usually be intimidating, zips past.&nbsp;</p>

<h2>Michelle Yeoh gives a superb performance</h2>

<p>Yeoh is in almost every frame of the movie, and a good thing too. For she is indescribably good — portraying the pain, confusion, exhaustion, and other moods with a veteran's ease. Stephanie Hsu, who plays her daughter Joy, also impresses, sporting different, gonzo outfits in nearly every other scene to exhibit her queerness. Ke Huy Quan is endearing as a timid but kind husband, who, lacking the hand-to-hand combat skills of his alt-universe counterpart, relies on his determination and genial, inoffensive personality to disarm people and get things done. This is&nbsp;the mother of all comebacks.</p>

But you would be an odd person if you actually pause to examine the thematic depth of this wonderful film. To paraphrase Stephen Fry's words about PG Wodehouse's novels, you do not analyse such sunlit perfection, you just bask in its splendour.&nbsp;</p>

<p><em>Everything Everywhere All At Once</em> is an absolute blast and should take the Best Picture Oscar.</p>

<h2>Is <em>Avatar: The Way of Water</em> a great movie?</h2>

<p>It kind of is. Cameron is one of the finest, if a little temperamental, makers of blockbusters around today. Few, if any, can match up to his ability to craft exciting action and stunning and imaginative visuals. With the <em>Avatar </em>franchise, he ventured into conceptualising and creating an entirely new alien world (or moon, if you are being pedantic) with its own flora, fauna, ecology, atmosphere, and so on. Not only everything was rendered in mind-boggling detail, despite all the bright colours and fantasy-like feel, it was authentic — after a fashion. It really did seem as though Pandora exists somewhere in the outer reaches of the galaxy (okay, it is meant to exist in the Alpha Centauri System, which is actually the closest star system to our solar system).</p>

<p><em>The Way of Water </em>was only better. Everything was more lifelike, more detailed, and prettier. A lot of the film was set underwater, and Cameron once again showed mastery over envisaging fictitious and yet somehow tangibly real life forms.</p>

<p>It will take your breath away. Everything is gorgeous in a cinematic, dynamic way. It sounds weird when I say this, but despite being so beautiful, the film managed to be subtle. The visual elements seamlessly blended into one other, and the film encouraged one to forget everything one is looking at was created in computers. In a few shots, particularly in the water, it is certain Cameron was showing off. And indeed my jaw was hanging slack, wondering how in the world he did it.</p>

<h2>Will <em>Avatar: The Way of Water</em> win the Best Picture Oscar?</h2>

<p>That is the big question. My guess is no. Sure, the Academy might pull off a surprise, and not every movie that gets an Oscar is deserving or indeed worth watching. But it is likely that <em>The Way of Water</em> will not win an Oscar. The reason is, with all its splendour and eye candy, <em>The Way of Water</em>'s story is strictly serviceable. The director has never been an impressive deviser of complex, gripping plots and characters beyond surface level. He does have the uncanny ability to build exciting narratives around action set pieces, and <em>The Way of Water </em>is no exception. <em>The Way of Water</em>&nbsp;is, in effect, a typical Cameron movie with all its glories and downfalls. It all comes across as something we have seen before, and done much better.</p>

Just like <em>Avatar</em>, none too delicately, hammered home the point that we should protect our forests, <em>The Way of Water</em> brings our attention to the oceans. New creatures in the film include over-friendly whale-like mammals called tulkun, and naturally, there are whalers extracting from their blubber the Pandora equivalent of whale oil, Amrita. Similar to the nectar in Hindu mythology that is supposed to make its consumer immortal, Amrita stops aging.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Yes, the natural world and the equilibrium in fragile ecosystems are worth preserving. And yes, many indigenous populations have a strong connection to the flora and fauna in the regions they inhabit. Oh, and technology can often be dangerous. But we knew that already, Cameron. Say something new!</p>

<p>I jest, but only a little. <em>The Way of Water</em> is certainly worth watching once in the theatre in 3D. It is, I would say, a quintessential movie-viewing experience, and will wow you with its beauty. And yet, once you get out of it, the simplistic story rears its ugly head.</p>
