<p>In Julius Avery's supernatural horror film, <em>The Pope's Exorcist</em>, Russell Crowe dons the collar and robe of Father Gabriele Amorth, the Vatican's chief exorcist (which is a real, actual position) who is tasked by the Pope with confronting the forces of evil that threaten to invade the souls of the innocent. Gabriele Amorth, too, was a real man, and the movie is based on his own accounts of exorcisms that he claims to have performed during his tenure. It's 1987. An American family, consisting of a mother Julia (Alex Essoe), her teenage daughter Amy (Laurel Marsden), and 12-year-old son Henry (Peter DeSouza-Feighoney), moves to a crumbling abbey in Spain left to them by Julia's husband and Amy and Henry's father who died a year earlier.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Julia's aim is to repair and restore the abbey, sell it, and move back to the US. While Amy is uncooperative, Henry is morose and has not spoken a word since the death of his father. The thing is, he was right there in the vehicle, in the back seat, when he saw his father being impaled in the accident. But if all that happened to him before Spain was bad enough, he is now going to be possessed by a particularly powerful demon. The construction works on the site inadvertently unearth the said entity, which speaks through Henry and demands the presence of "the priest."</p>

<p>No, the local priest Father Esquibel (Daniel Zovatto) will not do. It has to be Amorth. The film follows the Vatican-stamped exorcist directed by Papal authority to deal with the case as he investigates the possession of the boy and simultaneously tries to uncover a sinister truth that the Vatican has kept hidden for centuries.&nbsp;</p>

<p><em>The Pope's Exorcist</em> has all the ingredients of a classic horror film — an old, spooky, and sprawling building, a possessed child, and of course, Russell Crowe in a priest's collar. But in the end, The Pope's Exorcist turns out to be a run-of-the-mill exorcism flick. Not only does it have nothing new to say about the genre, but it also does not justify the 'Exorcist' in the title.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The reason is, there are quite a few exorcism scenes here as you can expect, but none of them are very compelling, though there are a couple of half-hearted attempts to recreate, or perhaps pay homage to, a few scenes from that queen of exorcism movies, 1973's <em>The Exorcist.</em> But even with half a century of advancement in filmmaking and visual effects, <em>The Pope's Exorcist </em>ends up being a pale shadow of that William Friedkin film.</p>

<p>2014's <em>Deliver Us from Evil </em>came to my mind while watching this movie, which was an otherwise mediocre horror thriller but did serve an absolutely riveting exorcism sequence.</p>

<p>However, amidst all of this mediocrity, there is one shining beacon of excellence, and that is Russell Crowe's performance as Father Gabriele Amorth. Crowe plays the role with casual good humour, and at the same time brings a sense of gravitas and intensity in a way only Crowe can. He is also, I expect, refreshingly different from most men of faith. Never preachy, possesses a gallows sense of humour ("Sugar is the work of devil," he says when offered some for his espresso shot), and is unfailingly kind. He is thus nothing like the real Amorth, who among other things said that yoga is satanic due to its association with the practice of Hinduism and belief in reincarnation, and that "all eastern religions are based on a false belief" and lead to evil "like Harry Potter."</p>

<p>But even Crowe is unable to save this movie. What could have been an intriguing exploration of faith, evil, and the shadowy workings of the Vatican ends up being a forgettable, by-the-numbers horror picture.</p>

<p>Alright, I'm about to drop a truth bomb: I have a confession to make. Brace yourself, folks. I have never, not once, played <em>Dungeons &amp; Dragons</em>. That's right, not the original game on a tabletop, not any of the video games inspired by it, and not even one measly story set in the fantastical D&amp;D universe. I was, however, excited about <em>Dungeons &amp; Dragons: Honor Among Thieves</em> for a couple of reasons. As a newcomer to the world of <em>D&amp;D</em>, I was eager to see what all the fuss was about. Then, Chris Pine happens to be my favourite Chris. Finally, while Hugh Grant is always watchable, these days he seems to really enjoy playing particularly unctuous villains.</p>

<p>Does the film live up to the hype and spark an interest in this vast universe of magic, monsters, and mayhem?</p>

<p>Our hero is sweet-talker Edgin Darvis (Pine), who becomes a thief to take care of his daughter after his wife is killed by Red Wizards, a powerful cult of sorcerers. He sets out to steal an object in one final heist that will resurrect his wife.&nbsp;</p>

<p>His group includes barbarian Holga Kilgore (Michelle Rodriguez), amateur sorcerer Simon Aumar (Justice Smith), and rogue Forge Fitzwilliam (Hugh Grant). They infiltrate a former Harper stronghold to retrieve a resurrection tablet, but things go wrong when they discover that one of their own members, Sofina (Daisy Head), is a Red Wizard and had her own dark, ulterior motives to team up with them.</p>

They discover that the Red Wizard plans to perform an ancient ritual to turn people into zombie slaves. Can they save the day?</p>

<p>The first thing I thought while watching <em>Honor Among Thieves </em>is how funny it is. Coming from the directing duo of Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley (also known for Game Night, one of the best comedies of this century), though, it should not have come as a big surprise. Their signature style of combining action, adventure, and humour is evident in nearly every frame of the film. The humour does not thankfully distract from the action and <em>Honor Among Thieves </em>for the most part retains its earnest tone (take note, Marvel).</p>

<p>The characters are all lovable misfits with their unique quirks, and there are echoes of James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy movies here. Edgin, for instance, has a regret over a past action that he reveals much later to the group. Holga abandoned her own tribe to be with a man she could not be with. Simon has self-esteem issues and thinks of himself less as a sorcerer and more as a conjuror. Doric has a hatred for humans for their rapacious tendencies towards natural resources and wildlife.</p>

Smith as Simon is equal parts vulnerability and bravado, providing a refreshing take on the classic "wizard in training" archetype. Grant, of course, absolutely revels in his role as the smarmy rogue. His performance is so deliciously oily that I could practically feel my arteries clogging just watching him.</p>

<p>As I understand<em> Honor Among Thieves</em> is a small, self-contained movie in the larger D&amp;D universe. So, the film likely did not need a lot of world-building. We are made aware that this is a fantasy universe right away. The film does a good job of immersing viewers in the fantasy world of D&amp;D, with its magic, mythical creatures, and strange, wondrous lands. From the towering castles to the dark and foreboding forests, different settings in the film are all well-realised.</p>

<p>The quality of CGI varies, and is often iffy. But not bad enough to take one out of the experience.</p>

<p>So that's it. I enjoyed <em>Honor Among Thieves</em>. It is a fun, action-packed romp through the magical world of <em>Dungeons &amp; Dragons.</em> It appeals to both franchise diehards and newcomers alike. Dungeons & Dragons Honor Among Thieves review: A hilarious, action-packed romp

<p><strong><em>Gaslight </em>movie review:</strong> Lights, camera, action, and intrigue! Pavan Kirpalani's <em>Gaslight </em>takes us to a palatial mansion in Rajasthan, where a paraplegic Princess Meesha (Sara Ali Khan) and the long-estranged daughter of a king who is on a quest to uncover the truth about her missing father. While her father wanted to see her, he is not at home to receive her. She is instead greeted by king's young wife and her beautiful and mysterious step-mother Rukmini (Chitrangada Singh), and the cast of characters soon comes to include other the helpful and sympathetic estate manager Kapil (Vikrant Massey), the distant cousin Rana (Akshay Oberoi), a family doctor Dr. Shekhawat (Shishir Sharma), and the local police officer Ashok Tanwar (Rahul Dev).</p>

<p>The stage is set for a classic whodunit, with all the necessary components. But does the film deliver on the promise?</p>

<p>As often happens in mysteries, the truth remains elusive for Meesha until of course it is time to deliver the big twist. She feels that she is being led astray by everyone. Is her father missing? Dead? If he is in some other town as Rukmini claims, why is her mobile phone not reachable? If things were not bad enough, she is haunted by the silhouette of a mysterious man with, yes, a gaslight. Is that her father's ghost? Or is she going insane?</p>

<p>We are told through flashbacks that reveal the old king did not have an amicable relationship with Meesha's mother, who died by suicide at one point — and Meesha blames him for that. Thus, the estrangement. She left her ancestral home as a little girl, and is returning as a young woman.</p>

<p>The title of the film refers to the gaslight the ghostly figure wields as though a weapon, but it is also an unsubtle metaphor for gaslighting, when a person is psychologically manipulated into doubting their own grip on reality. Which seemingly happens with Meesha.</p>

<p>Gaslight is not a bad movie. The atmosphere is creepy enough, and the set design solid, so there is a nice sense of place here. The film is certainly well-made for a technical standpoint. Kirpalani infuses considerable tension in the story to keep one engaged. As unsolved questions pile up, the stakes get higher and people begin to die violently.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Gaslight tells the story through the eyes of Meesha, and thus when the inevitable rug, you hope, is pulled from under our feet, the resulting shock and surprise will affect us as well too.</p>

<p>But sadly, <em>Gaslight </em>is agonisingly predictable, and there can be no bigger sin than that for a whodunit. Despite the scarcity of clues, carefully doled out over the narrative, and misdirections, I expect everyone except somebody wholly new to whodunits will easily guess the first twist. And when half an hour is still to go, you realise the film might have one more surprise up its sleeve. But the final twist does not have anything that the storytelling led up to. But it does pull the metaphorical rug under your feet. So there's that.&nbsp;</p>

Pavan Kirpalani's Gaslight takes us to a palatial mansion in Rajasthan, where a paraplegic Princess Meesha (Sara Ali Khan) and the long-estranged daughter of a king who is on a quest to uncover the truth about her missing father. While her father wanted to see her, he is not at home to receive her. She is instead greeted by king's young wife and her beautiful and mysterious step-mother Rukmini (Chitrangada Singh), and the cast of characters soon comes to include other the helpful and sympathetic estate manager Kapil (Vikrant Massey), the distant cousin Rana (Akshay Oberoi), a family doctor Dr. Shekhawat (Shishir Sharma), and the local police officer Ashok Tanwar (Rahul Dev). The stage is set for a classic whodunit, with all the necessary components. But does the film deliver on the promise? As often happens in mysteries, the truth remains elusive for Meesha until of course it is time to deliver the big twist. She feels that she is being led astray by everyone. Is her father missing? Dead? If he is in some other town as Rukmini claims, why is her mobile phone not reachable? If things were not bad enough, she is haunted by the silhouette of a mysterious man with, yes, a gaslight. Is that her father's ghost? Or is she going insane? Thus, the estrangement. She left her ancestral home as a little girl, and is returning as a young woman. The title of the film refers to the gaslight the ghostly figure wields as though a weapon, but it is also an unsubtle metaphor for gaslighting, when a person is psychologically manipulated into doubting their own grip on reality. Which seemingly happens with Meesha. Gaslight is not a bad movie. The atmosphere is creepy enough, and the set design solid, so there is a nice sense of place here. The film is certainly well-made for a technical standpoint. Kirpalani infuses considerable tension in the story to keep one engaged. As unsolved questions pile up, the stakes get higher and people begin to die violently. Gaslight tells the story through the eyes of Meesha, and thus when the inevitable rug, you hope, is pulled from under our feet, the resulting shock and surprise will affect us as well too. But sadly, Gaslight is agonisingly predictable, and there can be no bigger sin than that for a whodunit. Despite the scarcity of clues, carefully doled out over the narrative, and misdirections, I expect everyone except somebody wholly new to whodunits will easily guess the first twist. And when half an hour is still to go, you realise the film might have one more surprise up its sleeve. But the final twist does not have anything that the storytelling led up to. Gaslight movie review: A murder mystery that flickers more than it illuminates

<p>Chitrangda Singh rarely does movies these days, much to the chagrin of her fans (this scribe very much included). She was last seen in 2021's Bob Biswas, and essayed the role of Mary Biswas, the wife of Abhishek Bachchan's titular character. But even before that, she had preferred quality over quantity. It is no surprise then that her return to films with the upcoming mystery thriller <em>Gaslight</em>, directed by Pavan Kirpalani, has been generating a lot of interest... "buzz" as we say in the era of social media and trends. It must be a special project to pique her interest, the thinking goes.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Also featuring Vikrant Massey, Sara Ali Khan, Akshay Oberoi, and Rahul Dev, the film is a whodunit in a classical way. It is set in a mansion and follows Sara's Misha, who tries to uncover the truth behind her father's disappearance.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Chitrangda sat down with WION to speak about the film, her love for murder mysteries, working with Sara and Vikrant, and more. Here are edited excerpts from the interview:</p>

<h2><strong>Can you reveal anything about the plot?</strong></h2>

<p>The teaser of the film [it showed Chitrangda, Sara, and Vikrant meeting in a lift, and realising they are part of the same project] was just to give you an idea of the three actors in the film and the fact that they're probably getting together for something which is mysterious. So it kind of leaves you there that all three are going to get stuck into something that is going to be mysterious and scary.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Are you a fan of murder mysteries? The Agatha Christie kind?</strong></h2>

<p>Yeah, I love them. I watched <em>Knives Out</em>, and thought it was fantastic. I also love <em>Misery </em>(Kathy Bates-led 1990 Stephen King adaptation about an author who encounters a deranged fan), and it is an all-time favourite.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Without giving away any spoilers, can you talk about your favourite scene in the film?</strong></h2>

<p>I cannot utter a word. I can tell you what I liked the most about the script. We discussed <em>Knives Out</em>. Sometimes thrillers are very plot-centric, right? They have such slow reveals. It's the beauty of the writing, and the script. It's the beauty of the three characters and who they are and what they are becoming. I think that is what people enjoy. So it's not just one scene, but how the whole film unravels, every character starting off somewhere and ending up somewhere else. Human nature is also at work. So it's all of that. The script is really the king in&nbsp;this film.</p>

<h2><strong>I like the combo: you, Sara, and Vikrant. How was it like working with those two?</strong></h2>

<p>It was lovely working with them. Both are very good and very different actors. And I feel it was a great idea. The casting itself kind of sets you up for interesting scenes. And Vikrant... I don't have to say, he's such a good actor. Sara has amazing energy on screen. And everybody was so involved in the film. Everybody prepped for the film, worked with the acting coach. We had a great time.</p>

<h2><strong>You talked about Knives Out. Any such preferences in Bollywood?</strong></h2>

<p>Not a murder mystery, but I loved that film with Tabu and Ayushmann Khurrana. What was the name!" (here she struggles to recall and gives a sigh of frustration before I chime in with <em>Andhadhun</em>). "<em>Andhadhun</em>! I thought that was so well done. I really enjoyed that. I also loved that Varun Dhawan and Radhika Apte film... <em>Badlapur</em>! Varun was so good in that. If given the right material, actors can really perform.</p>

<h2><strong>Who is your idol?</strong></h2>

<p>My god, there are so many. Smita ji (Patil), Shabana ji (Azmi), Rekha ji, Zeenat Aman, Waheeda Rehman, Madhu Bala. They're all so different from each other. So I think the whole idea is to really be yourself at the same time.&nbsp;</p>
