<p>Despite the Ticketmaster controversy, the tour broke the record for the most concert tickets sold by an artist in a single day by selling over&nbsp;2.4 million seats in just a few hours.&nbsp;Approximately 14 million users were on the site during the presale push.</p>

<p>About 70,000 of those fans attended the first Eras Tour show in Arizona.</p>

<p>The concert began with&nbsp;a six-song set from her album <em>Lover</em>.&nbsp;She ended the concert with a seven-song set from her latest album <em>Midnights</em>. In between, she played clusters of songs from her other albums. It took 44 songs and just over three hours for her to span her 17-year career.</p>

<p>After another show at the same venue on Saturday night, the tour will move to Allegiant Stadium outside Las Vegas and then AT&amp;T Stadium near Dallas. It will conclude&nbsp;with two Los Angeles shows in August.</p>

<p><em>Bigg Boss 16 </em>winner and Pune-based rapper MC Stan aka Altaf Tadavi's Indore gig was forcefully stopped by members of a political group over some curse words used in his songs. The incident took place on Friday night in Indore.</p>

<p>According to reports, some men claiming to be from Hindu nationalist organisations, Bajrang Dal and Karni Sena, shouted the Jai Shri Ram slogans from the stage and disrupted Stan's live concert. They even threatened to beat the rapper and were seen asking for the hotel where Stan is staying.</p>

<p>The goons claimed that the rapper is polluting the young minds of the country by using abuse-filled lyrics.</p>

<p>The incident was caught on camera. The viral video shows&nbsp;some men with orange scarves hurling abuse at the rapper from the stage.</p>

<p>Recent studies show that at the age of seven, young children who are taught by a teacher of their own ethnicity have better learning and problem-solving skills. The results, which examined more than 18,000 students across the US, found that the effect was particularly noticeable in Black and Latinx youngsters.</p>

<p>Published in the peer-reviewed journal Early Education and Development, the study revealed that if the ethnicity of children is shared with that of their teachers, the children are more likely to go on to develop better working memory. This is the ability to hold and process information in your mind – a skill which is essential for learning and problem-solving.</p>

<p>“Diversifying the educator workforce represents a key step toward promoting greater equity in schools across the United States,” says lead author Professor Michael Gottfried, from the University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Education.</p>

<p>“Our results add to the substantive evidence that ethno-racial representation among American educators matters by underscoring a key way in which students’ developmental skills are developed in schools. This is a critical step forward as students’ working memory, a core component of executive function has been consistently linked to improvements in student achievement and is most malleable in early childhood.”</p>

<p>It’s been known for some time that being taught by a teacher from the same ethno-racial background can improve a student’s academic attainment, such as math and reading test scores. However, this study is one of the first to explore the effect of teacher/student ethno-racial matching in children younger than age nine and to look at how it affects not only academic attainment but also development.</p>

<p>The research analyzed data from 18,170 children who were part of the US Department of Education-led Early Childhood Longitudinal Study – Kindergarten class of 2011. This study follows a representative sample of children from the US population who were in kindergarten (preschool children aged 3 to 6) in 2011. The study analyzed information on these children when they were in kindergarten through to the end of first grade (ages 6 to 7).</p>

<p>Specifically, the research looked at the effect of matching the race/ethnicity of Asian, Black, Latinx and White teachers and students on two measures of brain power known as ‘executive function’ which help children to engage in behaviour working towards a goal. One measure was working memory; the ability to hold and process information in our minds. The other was so-called cognitive flexibility; the ability to change our attention and perspectives.</p>

<p>To measure cognitive flexibility, the researchers tested children’s ability to switch between thinking about different concepts. This was done through a task in which they had to sort cards by shape, colour and border. Working memory was assessed by the researchers by asking children to repeat a dictated series of numbers, with one extra digit added to the series every time the child remembered the previous series correctly. The study also looked at the effect of matched student-teacher race/ethnicity on children’s reading and math achievement scores. All groups were compared with a control group taught by a teacher from a different ethno-racial background.</p>

<p>Findings suggested that when students have an ethno-racial match with their teacher, their reading and math achievement scores were higher. The size effect was greatest in Black students and Latinx students. Hand in hand with this, working memory also improved in Black and Latinx children matched with a teacher of the same race/ethnicity. However ethno-racial matching appeared to have no effect on cognitive flexibility.</p>

<p>These findings held true regardless of differences in standards of teaching, whether children were taught for one year or two by a matched ethnicity teacher and whether or not the child attended a public or private school.</p>

<p>The authors say that, while the effect size is relatively small, when scaled up to the population level and across multiple years of schooling, the effects could make a big difference.</p>

<p>There is growing interest in executive function skills because they can predict both strong human development and academic success. Previous research has also shown that there are stark differences in executive function based on race/ethnicity and levels of wealth. One study has shown that, on average, Black and Latinx children start kindergarten significantly behind their White peers in terms of working memory and cognitive flexibility.</p>

<p>It may be that Latinx and Black teachers are better able to support their students’ development, the study authors suggest. If that is the case, then promoting ethno-racial teacher/student matches could help to reverse the inequalities seen in executive function in younger children.</p>

<p>“Researchers have found that teachers of colour are more likely to provide culturally relevant pedagogy, and when they do, they are able to better connect with students whose culture and experiences are often not reflected in standard school curricula and approaches,” adds Dr Gottfried.</p>

<p>Other factors at play could be students responding to having a role model at the front of the class of their own race/ethnicity or even unconscious bias of teachers.</p>

<p>“What a teacher believes about certain groups of students can alter how they deliver instruction, interact with parents, and grade papers, for example. This perspective could play out with a non-matched teacher not accurately recognizing the skill or developmental level of a student of colour and thus not providing appropriate levels of scaffolded instruction, which has been linked to improvements in executive functions in addition to academic achievement,” says Dr Gottfried.</p>

<p>Future research should try to unpick the reasons why ethno-racial matching of students and teachers has this positive effect on attainment and development, the authors say.&nbsp;</p>

One measure was working memory; the ability to hold and process information in our minds. The other was so-called cognitive flexibility; the ability to change our attention and perspectives. To measure cognitive flexibility, the researchers tested children’s ability to switch between thinking about different concepts. This was done through a task in which they had to sort cards by shape, colour and border. Working memory was assessed by the researchers by asking children to repeat a dictated series of numbers, with one extra digit added to the series every time the child remembered the previous series correctly. The study also looked at the effect of matched student-teacher race/ethnicity on children’s reading and math achievement scores. All groups were compared with a control group taught by a teacher from a different ethno-racial background. Findings suggested that when students have an ethno-racial match with their teacher, their reading and math achievement scores were higher. The size effect was greatest in Black students and Latinx students. Hand in hand with this, working memory also improved in Black and Latinx children matched with a teacher of the same race/ethnicity. However ethno-racial matching appeared to have no effect on cognitive flexibility. These findings held true regardless of differences in standards of teaching, whether children were taught for one year or two by a matched ethnicity teacher and whether or not the child attended a public or private school. The authors say that, while the effect size is relatively small, when scaled up to the population level and across multiple years of schooling, the effects could make a big difference. There is growing interest in executive function skills because they can predict both strong human development and academic success. Previous research has also shown that there are stark differences in executive function based on race/ethnicity and levels of wealth. One study has shown that, on average, Black and Latinx children start kindergarten significantly behind their White peers in terms of working memory and cognitive flexibility. It may be that Latinx and Black teachers are better able to support their students’ development, the study authors suggest. If that is the case, then promoting ethno-racial teacher/student matches could help to reverse the inequalities seen in executive function in younger children. “Researchers have found that teachers of colour are more likely to provide culturally relevant pedagogy, and when they do, they are able to better connect with students whose culture and experiences are often not reflected in standard school curricula and approaches,” adds Dr Gottfried. Other factors at play could be students responding to having a role model at the front of the class of their own race/ethnicity or even unconscious bias of teachers. “What a teacher believes about certain groups of students can alter how they deliver instruction, interact with parents, and grade papers, for example. This perspective could play out with a non-matched teacher not accurately recognizing the skill or developmental level of a student of colour and thus not providing appropriate levels of scaffolded instruction, which has been linked to improvements in executive functions in addition to academic achievement,” says Dr Gottfried. Future research should try to unpick the reasons why ethno-racial matching of students and teachers has this positive effect on attainment and development, the authors say. <p>"We spend too much time consumed by the drudgery," said Jared Spataro, Microsoft corporate vice president.</p>

<p>With artificial intelligence Spataro wants to "rediscover the soul of work," he said during a Microsoft presentation on Thursday.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Artificial intelligence can also cut costs, some suggest.</p>

<p>British landscape architect Joe Perkins tweeted that he used GPT-4 for a coding project, which a "very good" developer had told him would cost 5,000 pounds ($6,000) and take two weeks.</p>

<p>"GPT-4 delivered the same in 3 hours, for $0.11," he tweeted. "Genuinely mind-boggling."</p>

<p>But that raises the question of the threat to human jobs, with entrepreneur Chen acknowledging that the technology could one day build a startup like his -- or an even better version.</p>

<p>"How am I going to make a living and not be homeless?" he asked, adding that he was counting on solutions to emerge.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Ubiquitous artificial intelligence also puts a question mark over creative authenticity as songs, images, art and more are cranked out by software instead of people.</p>

<p>Will humans shun education, relying instead on software to do the thinking for them?</p>

<p>And, who is to be trusted to make AI unbiased, accurate, and adaptable to different countries and cultures?</p>

<p>AGI is "probably coming at us faster than we can process," says Sharon Zhou, co-founder of a generative AI company.</p>

<p>The technology raises an existential question for humanity, she told AFP.</p>

<p>"If there is going to be something more powerful than us and more intelligent than us, what does that mean for us?" Zhou asked.</p>

<p>"And do we harness it? Or does it harness us?"</p>

<p>OpenAI says it plans to build AGI gradually with the aim of benefitting all of humanity, but it has conceded that the software has safety flaws.</p>

<p>Safety is a "process," OpenAI chief scientist Ilya Sutskever said in an interview with the MIT Technology Review, adding that it would be "highly desirable" for companies to "come up with some kind of process that allows for slower releases of models with these completely unprecedented capabilities."</p>

<p>But for now, says Zhou, slowing down is just not part of the ethos.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The power is concentrated around those who can build this stuff. And they make the decisions around this, and they are inclined to move fast," she says.</p>

<p>The international order itself could be at stake, she suggests.</p>

<p>Stress, workload or sometimes, even parties affect our sleeping patterns and schedule. And, we often forget that getting enough sleep is essential for maintaining optimal health and overall well-being. Sleeplessness doesn't just give us nasty-looking eye bags and dark circles but also increases our risk of peripheral arterial disease (PAD), according to research published in the European Heart Journal – Open, an ESC journal. It says that sleeping less than five hours each night is linked to a 74 per cent increased risk of clogged leg arteries.</p>

<p>"Our study suggests that sleeping for seven to eight hours a night is a good habit for lowering the risk of PAD," claims study author Dr Shuai Yuan of the Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden.</p>

<p>The study also states that over 200 million people globally have peripheral artery disease (PAD),&nbsp;which causes arteries in the legs to clog, restricting blood flow and increasing the risk of stroke and heart attack.</p>

<p>Dr Yuan added, "Insufficient night-time sleep and daytime napping have previously been associated with a raised risk of coronary artery disease which, like PAD, is caused by clogged arteries. In addition, sleeping problems are among the top-ranked complaints in PAD patients. There are limited data on the impact of sleep habits on PAD and vice versa, and our study aimed to fill that gap."</p>

<p>The study&nbsp;was conducted in two parts and assessed more than 650,000 participants. In the first part, the researchers analysed the associations of sleep duration and daytime napping with the risk of PAD. In the second part, the researchers used genetic data to perform naturally randomised controlled trials to examine the causality of the associations. The trials were&nbsp;called Mendelian randomisation.</p>

<p>Dr Yuan noted, "Observational analyses are limited by reverse causality – meaning that if an association between sleep habits and PAD is found, we cannot be certain if sleep habits caused PAD or having PAD caused the sleep habits. Mendelian randomisation is a robust method for evaluating causality and provides more certainty about the results."</p>

<p>In an observational analysis of over fifty thousand&nbsp;adults, sleeping less than five hours a night was associated with an increased risk of PAD, as compared to seven to eight hours. The findings were&nbsp;further supported by analysing 156,582 and 452,028 individuals.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Dr Yuan said, "The results indicate that brief night-time sleep can raise the chance of developing PAD and that having PAD increases the risk of getting insufficient sleep."</p>

<p>Meanwhile, sleeping eight hours or more each night was linked to a 24 per cent higher risk of PAD, as compared to seven to eight hours.&nbsp;However, no causal relationships were found between long sleep and PAD.</p>

<p>Daytime nappers, however, had a 32 per cent higher risk of PAD, as compared to those who did not nap during the day.</p>

<p>"More studies are needed on the relationships between lengthy night-time sleep, daytime napping and PAD," said Dr Yuan.</p>

<p>To conclude, he stated, "Although we found associations in the observational studies, we could not confirm causality. More research is needed on how to interrupt the bidirectional link between short sleep and PAD. Lifestyle changes that help people get more sleep, such as being physically active, may lower the risk of developing PAD. For patients with PAD, optimising pain management could enable them to have a good night’s sleep."</p>
