Over a hundred candidates from various political parties and Independents filed nominations on Tuesday in various districts for the first phase of assembly elections in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. The National Conference, Congress, PDP, and BJP leaders were seen carrying huge rallies towards the nomination centres.

Former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir Omar Abdullah accompanied senior leader of National Conference Altaf Kaloo as he filed his nomination for the upcoming assembly election from Pahalgam constituency. "Today is the last day to file nominations for the first phase. We have given our manifesto and roadmap. We have decided on a seat-sharing agreement with Congress. We aim to fight against the BJP like a consolidated front. Those who could not get the ticket due to the pre-poll alliance from our party will be adjusted in future,'' said Omar Abdullah.

PDP President Mehbooba Mufti accompanied her daughter Iltija Mufti, who filed her nomination from the Bijbehara Constituency. Iltija will be fighting the election&nbsp;for the first time while Mehbooba Mufti is likely to stay away and not contest herself.

''This is a big honour for me that I have been asked to file papers for the Bijbehara Constituency. This is the constituency where Veeri Saab has done phenomenal work in his four terms that he has been chosen and Mehbooba Ji also started her career from here and today is a very emotional day for me and I am very honoured. It was a very emotional moment for me, and I was missing Mufti Saab a lot,'' said Iltija Mufti.

In a big development, the former Jamaat Islami members have also started filing their nominations. Jamaat Islami was banned by the Home Ministry but now its former members have started coming into mainstream to fight assembly elections. In South Kashmir's Kulgam District, Nazir Ahmad Bhat, a former member of Jamaat-e-Islami, filed his nomination for the Devsar Assembly constituency.

''There was a lot of injustice here. Last year, my two nephews were arrested, and despite seeking help from many leaders, no one helped. At that time, I decided to serve the people. There was fear of rigging in the parliamentary elections, but it didn’t happen, which gave me the courage to contest. That was the time I decided to fight, and I will make sure to win. I was associated with Jamaat because I used to attend their functions,'' said Nazir Ahmad Bhat.

However, Omar Abdullah took a dig at Jamaat and said that till now contesting elections was “haram” for the JeI, but now it's “halal”. “If they are willing to contest polls it's a welcome step. We wanted them to contest on their own symbol, but that didn’t happen due to its ban,” he added.

In a significant political twist,&nbsp;Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti on Saturday (August 24) said that her party will give unconditional support to the National Conference (NC) and Congress's pre-poll alliance&nbsp;if both these parties accept PDP's manifesto.&nbsp;

It was during the release of the party manifesto&nbsp;for the upcoming assembly elections that Mufti said that the party is not vying for seats but is ready to back the alliance if it aligns with their agenda, which prominently includes addressing the long-standing Kashmir issue.&nbsp;

Mufti while reading out details from the manifesto said that "Power and seats don't matter for the PDP." Her party's primary concern is the resolution of critical issues facing the region.

"We will not fight for the seats but will completely support the alliance if they agree to follow our agenda, which includes the resolution of the Kashmir issue.&nbsp;Power and seats don't matter for PDP, but in case the party's agenda is accepted, we will extend support to the alliance in Jammu and Kashmir."

"The traditional routes will be opened, free 200 units of electricity will be provided, the fight over the resolution of the Kashmir issue will be taken forward and the dialogue process to be started if PDP is elected to power,"&nbsp;said the PDP president.&nbsp;

The NC-Congress alliance, which also includes the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI (M)), has already announced plans to contest all 90 assembly seats in Jammu and Kashmir. While seat-sharing agreements have largely been finalised, discussions continue over certain contentious constituencies where candidates from both parties are eager to compete.

"There won't be any alliance with anyone, and we did bear the brunt in the Lok Sabha elections. We will contest the assembly polls on our own and we have decided not to go for any alliance this time. PDP and BJP are in a secret alliance with NC and Congress,"&nbsp;said Bukhari, president of the Apni Party.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Congress chaired a meeting of its screening committee in Srinagar to address the concerns of party leaders who are aggrieved over seat-sharing with the National Conference.

Since the alliance between the Congress and NC has been announced, resentment within the Congress party is brewing against surrendering in front of NC.&nbsp;

With the Jammu and Kashmir Police confirming that around 70-80 foreign terrorists are active in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, most of them are believed to be in the higher reaches of the North Kashmir and Jammu region. The dense forest range and the steep mountains have become a safe haven for infiltrated terrorists.

Meanwhile, the security forces are coming up with new strategies and training to make sure that there are no successful infiltrations at the LoC and International Border.

The manifesto also speaks about advocating for Indo-Pak dialogue as the best method to resolve ongoing conflicts. It also says that the JKNC is strongly committed to the dignified return and rehabilitation of Kashmiri Pandits. Not only that, NC also announced freebies for the citizens, including&nbsp;free education for all till university, and 200 units of electricity for every household.&nbsp;

''Electricity prices are going up and water is not available everywhere, we will address this as well. We will give 200 units free electricity. ‎Free education will be given to the students of J&amp;K upto University level. We will favour the India-Pakistan talks and support the CBM’s that were put at the time of Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Manmohan Singh,'' said&nbsp;Omar.&nbsp;

None of the political parties have announced any alliance, but Congress and National Conference will soon discuss it. Prabhat has major experience in counter-terrorism operations across the country. Prabhat, a 1992-batch IPS officer, will take charge from RR Swain upon his retirement next month. Until then, he will serve as the SDG of Jammu and Kashmir Police.

Prabhat has vast service experience in the UT, particularly during its peak terrorism period. He gained widespread recognition for his leadership during the 2009 Lal Chowk anti-fidayeen operation, where he successfully neutralised terrorists who had attacked the Punjab Hotel in Srinagar, preventing further destruction in the heart of the city.

One terrorist killed in Doda gunfight after army captain succumbs to injuries
