<p>South Kashmir remains one of the coldest areas in the Kashmir division. The Khudwani area in South Kashmir saw the night temperature settle at minus 6.5 degrees. The tourist resort of Pahalgam recorded a minimum of minus 6.4 degrees while Shopian district observed a minimum of 6.1 degrees Celsius. The World Famous Ski resort of Gulmarg, in North Kashmir's Baramulla district experienced a freezing night temperature of minus 5.2 degrees, while the minimum in Sonamarg was minus 6.6 degrees. &nbsp;</p>
<p>South Kashmir's Pulwama district saw the minimum temperature settle at minus 6.1 degrees. Bandipora recorded a night temperature of 4.7 and Baramulla was at minus 3.6 degrees. &nbsp;</p>
<p>Ladakh region has been battling cold wave conditions as well. The Leh town recorded a minimum temperature of minus 11.7 degrees. While Kargil was at minus 14.3 degrees. Dras was at minus 22.5 degrees while the coldest place in North India still remains Zojila at minus 24 degrees.</p>

<p>The MeT Department of Kashmir Valley has predicted La Nina effect which means cooler than average sea surface temperatures across central and eastern Pacific. This weather change mostly impacts the wind circulation patterns leading to more rains and snow. The MeT department has predicted that the winter period will prolong and will be very harsh in terms of temperature as well as rain and snow.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, for the next 24 hours the Met department has predicted clear skies and further dip in temperature. The weather will be dry till January 29 and thereafter until January 31, there are chances of snow across various parts of the region.</p>

Security beefed up across J&K ahead of Republic Day celebrations

<p><strong>Srinagar:</strong> To preserve and conserve the famous Chinar trees of the Kashmir Valley, the authorities in the region are geotagging each and every such tree in the Valley. The authorities believe that many factors like urbanisation, diseases, and developmental projects have led to the loss of hundreds of Chinar trees in recent times, and to prevent this, a Digital Tree Aadhar number has been allotted to every Chinar tree in the Valley.</p>
<p>Over 29,000 Chinar trees have been geotagged so far, and only a thousand are left. It took the authorities over four years to tag each and every Chinar tree along with its information like status, height, girth, geographical location, etc. This will help in preserving and conserving the Chinar trees in the region.</p>

We have around 30 thousand Chinar trees in Kashmir, and have completed tagging of around 29 thousand. We have every detail and data of the Chinars, and we have the metal tagging with a UV printed. Giving an Aadhar number to every tree ensures its safety. By scanning the QR code, you would know everything about the Chinar,&rdquo; said Dr Syed Tariq, Coordinator Projects, In Charge Bio Diversity Kashmir.</p>

<p>The Chinar trees in the Kashmir Valley are centuries old. The trees, in general, take over a century to reach their full growth. Some of the Chinar trees in the Valley are over 500 years old. The researchers involved in the project have studied each and every Chinar in the valley. From their exact status to height, around 25 characteristics of the tree have been mentioned in the scanned list.</p>

We started this in 2021 and are close to completion. We have around 30 thousand Chinar trees in Kashmir, and have completed tagging of around 29 thousand. <p>The Jammu and Kashmir government has issued an order to establish containment zones in Rajouri's Budhal Village where 17 people have died in mysterious circumstances. The district magistrate of Rajouri ordered a containment strategy and Surveillance Measures for Affected Families and Close Contacts and imposed Section 163 of BNSS in view of the recent health situation in the Badhal area and to curb the further spread of infection.</p>
<p>The order says that all families where deaths have occurred shall be declared as Containment Zone 1. The houses of these affected families shall be sealed, and entry will be totally restricted for all individuals, including their family members unless otherwise authorised by the designated officers/officials.</p>

<h2>Zone-wise containment</h2>
<p>In Zone 2 of the order copy, all families identified as close contacts of affected individuals shall be declared as Containment Zone 2. Immediate shifting of individuals from these families to GMC Rajouri for continuous health monitoring is mandatory.</p>
<p>In Zone 3, Prohibition of Gatherings, all public and private gatherings are hereby prohibited within the jurisdiction of these containment zones in order to prevent further spread of the infection. The designated officials (already identified by the administration) shall be responsible for monitoring all meals provided to families in containment zones.</p>

<p>The Srinagar Smart City Project is part of the Ministry of Urban Development (MoUD) project of the Government of India. The project for Srinagar was approved in April 2017 with a budget of over Rs 3535 crore for area-based development and other urban solutions, including road and transport.</p>
<p>&ldquo;The smart city project was working very well as they renovated parts of the city, including the Clock Tower, which has become the main attraction, but now the corruption cases being exposed have shocked everyone. In today&rsquo;s digital age, these officers who do bungling should be taken to task. It&rsquo;s our tax money that is being used for these projects, and these officers even do corruption in these cases. If these officers had some fear, they would never have done this. The LG administration should look into this. Strict action should be taken against these officers,&rdquo; said Muneer, a local resident.</p>

Srinagar Smart City Project hit by corruption, bungling worth crores reported

<p>After waiting for decades, the dreams of the people living in the Kashmir Valley have shattered after knowing that there would be no direct train to the Valley from New Delhi. Be it the locals, the business community or the Politicians, everyone wants the government to reconsider the decision.</p>
<p>The railway authorities recently came out with a schedule that dose not show any direct train to the Kashmir Valley. All passengers travelling to the Valley will have to deboard at Katra station and catch a new train. This has dampened the excitement seen after the completion of the rail network in the Valley.</p>
<p>The Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Omar Abdullah had also expressed dissatisfaction.</p>
<p>''Just to remove any chance of any misunderstanding, while we understand the need to secure the train &amp; the passengers who will travel using it, making passengers change trains will defeat the very purpose of the line and render the thousands of crores of investment pointless. Check the train/passengers in Katra or Jammu sure but NO change of train will be supported by us. That said there is no concrete proposal &amp; when there is we will give our inputs/suggestions,'' said Omar Abdullah.</p>

<p>The Business community which had earlier shown a lot of excitement over the start of the railways in the Valley is also disappointed. They say it will impact the Horticulture and the tourism sector badly if there are no trains directly to the Kashmir Valley. They have requested the central government to reconsider the decision.</p>
<p>'' We were hoping that there will be a direct train from Delhi to Srinagar and now it's Katra. We are very hopeful in the coming days there will be a direct train to Srinagar. All the tourists and locals coming will be benefited. It will also be helpful for the local business and students and sick people. The tourists who couldn't afford airfares, it would be possible via this train and our sincere request to Prime Minister Modiji and LG and CM is that there should at least be one train from Delhi to Srinagar, '' said Manzoor Pakhtoon, President Houseboat Association.</p>
<p>It's not only the Politicians and the business community which are disappointed by the move but the locals, who had great expectations with railways coming to the Kashmir Valley are also disheartened. &nbsp;</p>
<p>''The government had promised that it would be a direct train from Delhi to Srinagar and in a very surprising move they have changed that. We feel that they have broken the promise. There is a lot of tension among the people, everyone had thought that there will be respite to them as they won't have to pay the high airfares. It's mostly the business people and sick people who have urgency and they would have benefitted by the direct train. The train stopping at Katra has changed and disappointed the locals. The government needs to rethink the decision. The local government also needs to push for it so that there is a direct train from Kashmir to Delhi, '' said Haya Javaid, a local.</p>
<p>The train service in the valley is expected to start from January 26 and is to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.</p>

Security forces lay these landmines close to the line of control to create an anti-infiltration obstacle system, but these mines move due to bad weather conditions, resulting in such incidents.</p>
<p>According to the Indian Army officials, an inquiry has been initiated by the Indian Army into the incident to find out the cause of the blast.</p>

We somehow managed in 2024, but it also gave us a lesson that if it continues in the year 2025, we will need some plan of action. The precipitation and snowfall are not in our hands, and we witnessed low water levels. We have made a drought action plan, as the lift irrigation schemes are the most affected as the sump tanks are at certain levels of the river. Last year, we couldn&rsquo;t lift water as the levels had depleted, but this year, we have made a plan of planting drought pumps and lifting the river water to put in sumps and deliver it to farmers,&rdquo; said Braham Jyoti Sharma, Chief Engineer, Irrigation and Flood Control.</p>

<div>The Z-morh tunnel has been made in an avalanche-prone area that had made the road to Sonamarg inaccessible during snowfall and extreme winters. The tunnel is very important for tourism in the region as Sonamarg used to be cut off during heavy snowfall in the area.</div>

<div>The tunnel is also of strategic importance to the defence forces and will improve the access between Srinagar to Sonamarg and later to Ladakh when the Zojila tunnel is opened.&nbsp;</div>

<div>Located at an altitude of over 8,500 feet, this stretch of road is particularly vulnerable to winter weather conditions and this tunnel will help to tackle those challenges.</div>

The 6.5-kilometere-long tunnel on the Srinagar-Leh highway in Gagangir area of Ganderbal district has been built at a cost of Rs 24 billion. The Z-morh tunnel has been made in an avalanche-prone area that had made the road to Sonamarg inaccessible during snowfall and extreme winters. The tunnel is very important for tourism in the region as Sonamarg used to be cut off during heavy snowfall in the area. The tunnel is also of strategic importance to the defence forces and will improve the access between Srinagar to Sonamarg and later to Ladakh when the Zojila tunnel is opened. Located at an altitude of over 8,500 feet, this stretch of road is particularly vulnerable to winter weather conditions and this tunnel will help to tackle those challenges. The tunnel work was started by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) in 2012, with the project being awarded to Tunnelways Limited. However, it was later taken over by the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), which re-issued the tender for the project. He said the asset would prove to be a gamechanger for the expansion of winter tourism in the valley. "Jammu and Kashmir, particularly central Kashmir, is awaiting the inauguration of a crucial piece of infrastructure in the coming days. The hoteliers of the Sonamarg area are eagerly waiting for the tunnel to open as the winters are here and it will be much easier for the tourists to reach Sonamarg through this tunnel.
