The weather system in Kashmir has caused heavy snowfall in the region affecting normal life. The National Highway - considered lifeline - connecting Srinagar to Jammu has been shut for traffic.

The Indian Army has since confirmed that one soldier succumbed to his injuries in the ongoing encounter.

The Meteorological Department (MeT) has also predicted snowfall in the higher reaches of south Kashmir’s Anantnag district, particularly in Pahalgam and surrounding areas like Chandanwari and Aru Valley. Kashmir Valley is in the grip of Chillai Kalan, the harshest and coldest phase of winter.
