<p>Opposition coalition Azimio la Umoja (Declaration of Unity) held a number of protests earlier this month, causing widespread disruption and in some cases violent confrontations with police in which more than two dozen people were killed and scores injured.</p>

<p>Azimio and the government coalition Kenya Kwanza (Kenya First) issued separate statements confirming the talks.</p>

<p>A group of US lawmakers has urged the Joe Biden and his administration to take executive action to make priority dates current for Green Card applicants from India to reduce the long wait period and backlog which has left them in a constant state of limbo.</p>

<p>Led by Congressmen Raja Krishnamoorthi and Larry Bucshon, the bipartisan group of 56 lawmakers sent a letter to Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas requesting the administration take executive action to provide relief to high-skilled employment-based visa holders.</p>

<p>In their letter, the US lawmakers also appealed to the administration to mark all dates for filing of employment-based visa applications in the Bureau of Consular Affairs' published Employment-Based Visa Bulletin as "current".</p>

<p>A Green Card, known officially as a Permanent Resident Card, is a document issued to immigrants to the US as evidence that the bearer has been granted the privilege of residing permanently.</p>

<p>The current situation surrounding the seven per cent country cap on employment-based Green Card allocation is causing severe repercussions, particularly for countries such as India, where the backlog has reached an astonishing 195 years, said Foundation for India and Indian Diaspora Studies (FIIDS USA) in a separate appeal to the US President Joe Biden.</p>

<p>This backlog disproportionately affects Indian tech professionals, who constitute a significant portion of the highly skilled STEM talent and US-educated graduates, playing a crucial role in maintaining the United States' competitive edge in the technology industries, it said.</p>

<p>However, the backlog has created a significant barrier, hindering these talented individuals from contributing meaningfully to the country's growth and innovation, the FIIDS observed.</p>

<p>This year, the FIIDS has made several efforts in addressing the concerns of the immigrant Indian community, in particular those related to Green Card and H-1B visas.</p>

<p>"We started efforts to get relief to Indian H-1Bs who are stuck in Green Card processing. We launched a change petition, we are approaching representatives, various other organisations and influencers. We are reaching out to the Bureau of consular services in the state department as well as the USCIS in the DHS to take administrative action to make the priority dates current for green card applicants," Khanderao Kand from FIIDS said.</p>

<p>The H-1B visa is a non-immigrant visa that allows US companies to employ foreign workers in speciality occupations that require theoretical or technical expertise.</p>

<p>Technology companies depend on it to hire tens of thousands of employees each year from countries like India and China.</p>

<p>The lawmakers in their letter said that marking all dates as "current" would allow employment-based applications to be filed regardless of applicants' country-based priority date. This would provide relief to thousands of individuals attempting to legally navigate the US immigration system and could potentially also make some eligible for employment authorisation documents to change jobs, start businesses, and travel abroad to visit family without penalty, it said.</p>

<p>Without this administrative action, which was also used during the administration of President George W Bush, individuals are left in a constant state of limbo and, in some cases, are punished for utilising a pathway of legal immigration by being forced to stay with one company or organisation due to their Green Card status, they said in the letter.</p>

<p>"I'm proud to join my colleagues in urging the Biden administration to address bureaucratic delays in our legal immigration system that are holding back our economy while leaving so many families in limbo," Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi said.</p>

<p>"By using its authority under the existing law, the administration can ease this burden while strengthening our economy and helping to create jobs," he said.</p>

<p>Congressman Bucshon said, unfortunately, due to bureaucratic red tape in "our nation's legal immigration system, they are caught in the visa backlog and don't have the flexibility to change jobs, start businesses, and travel abroad without penalty".</p>

<p>"I believe that it's important for the administration to act within the current law to make it easier for these legal immigrants to navigate our immigration system and continue making a positive contribution to our nation and our economy," Bucshon said.</p>

<p>President of Immigration Voice Aman Kapoor said that "this commonsense measure proposed in the letter by Congressmen Krishnamoorthi and Bucshon would be an absolute game changer to provide basic human rights such as the ability to change jobs and travel for nearly one million high skilled immigrants whose status in the US can end at any moment and is entirely dependent upon the whims of their employer".</p>

Technology companies depend on it to hire tens of thousands of employees each year from countries like India and China. The lawmakers in their letter said that marking all dates as "current" would allow employment-based applications to be filed regardless of applicants' country-based priority date. This would provide relief to thousands of individuals attempting to legally navigate the US immigration system and could potentially also make some eligible for employment authorisation documents to change jobs, start businesses, and travel abroad to visit family without penalty, it said. Without this administrative action, which was also used during the administration of President George W Bush, individuals are left in a constant state of limbo and, in some cases, are punished for utilising a pathway of legal immigration by being forced to stay with one company or organisation due to their Green Card status, they said in the letter. "I'm proud to join my colleagues in urging the Biden administration to address bureaucratic delays in our legal immigration system that are holding back our economy while leaving so many families in limbo," Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi said. "By using its authority under the existing law, the administration can ease this burden while strengthening our economy and helping to create jobs," he said. <p>Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova revealed that Russia received around 30 peace initiatives aimed at resolving the conflict in Ukraine, reported TASS news agency. These initiatives came through both official and unofficial channels, Zakharova said.&nbsp;</p>

It seems to me that a month ago there were already about 30 [initiatives] that were made by public figures through state channels or even in some private way," the official noted on the sidelines of the second Russia-Africa summit in St. Petersburg.&nbsp;</p>

<p>She said that Russia remained open to negotiations and consistently engaged in dialogue with partners. "Even when we understood that they [negotiations] were unlikely to bring any added value, but we always gave such a chance to partners or the situation in general," the Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The rally was organised by the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), representing various Meitei groups, and witnessed active participation from many communities. The rally commenced at Thangmeiband in Imphal and covered an impressive distance of about 8 km, concluding at Hapta Kangjeibung. It marked the most significant mobilisation since the 2001 rally against the division of Manipur's territory.</p>

<p>The participants of the rally were determined to put an end to the ongoing ethnic conflict and address the issues caused by suspected narco-terrorists from Myanmar, who were believed to be creating disturbances in Manipur.</p>

<h2><strong>Appeal to PM Modi&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>The organisers of the rally stated their intention to submit a memorandum to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging him to take prompt action to restore peace and normalcy in Manipur.</p>

<p>The central government's deployment of over 40,000 security personnel was also criticised for not being effectively utilised to protect the people of Manipur. Ningomba also pointed out that Prime Minister Modi had remained silent on the Manipur situation until a viral video prompted a response, which the people of Manipur had condemned.</p>

<p>TMC MP Sushmita Dev said, “It was important for us to come and meet the victims here, the sad part is that the Government of India should have sent a delegation but Opposition parties have to send a delegation here.”</p>

<p>“We met several people in the relief camp here and listened to their problems. We have assured them that there will be a change in the situation and we are all working in that direction,” said RJD MP Manoj Jha.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Dharmendra Shukla, a&nbsp;man from Indore city in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh recently received a massive reply to his Right to Information Act (RTI) plea related to the COVID-19 pandemic. The reply was in the form of a staggering 40,000 pages of information, reported PTI news agency.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Dharmendra Shukla had submitted an RTI plea requesting details about bill payments towards materials procured during the COVID-19 pandemic period.</p>

<p>"I had submitted an RTI plea with the Chief Medical and Health Officer (CMHO) of Indore seeking details of tenders and bill payments connected to procurement of medicines, equipment and allied materials during the COVID-19 pandemic period,” Shukla said on Saturday.</p>

<p>PTI news agency said that upon being contacted, Dr. Sharad Gupta, the appellate officer and Regional Joint Director of the state health department, confirmed that he ordered the information to be provided to Shukla without any charges.</p>

<p>Even though Shukla got the RTI response, it was not received within the stipulated time period of one month.&nbsp;Dr. Gupta said that an action will be taken against the personnel responsible for the delay in providing the information.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Recently, I had a conversation with someone grappling with major depressive disorder (MDD).</p>

<p>This person had consciously chosen to steer clear of both Instagram, which she branded as a cult of aesthetics, and X, which she completely dismissed as a mere megaphone for the uninformed.</p>

<p>Her perspective struck a chord with me, leaving me intrigued.</p>

<p>As I reminisce over my college days, one particular memory stands out.</p>

<p>A dear friend of mine, who now graces the screen as a morning-time anchor at a top TV channel, decided to tackle the captivating yet perilous subject of social media's harmful effects and our ever-present attachment to mobile phones.</p>

<p>Her enthusiasm was contagious as she prepared to deliver her presentation.</p>

<p>I vividly remember the moment she engaged the class with a straightforward question that cut through the air like a sharp blade: "Raise your hand if you think you are NOT addicted to social media."</p>

<p>Only one hand emerged from the crowd – mine.</p>

<p>A sense of pride and confidence washed over me, and a beaming smile adorned my face. In that moment, I firmly believed I had built an impregnable fortress of immunity against the allure of Instagram and X.</p>

<p>Little did I know that the siren calls of these virtual realms can seep through the tiniest of cracks.</p>

<p>As time went on, I, too, found myself wandering down the enticing rabbit hole of social media. The constant buzz of notifications and the allure of endless scrolling began to grip me.</p>

<p>Now, as I reflect on that moment in the classroom, I realise the profound irony of my self-assured response.</p>

<p>As I continue my path in the media world, I carry with me this wisdom - The ever-evolving digital landscape demands vigilance and a mindful approach.</p>

<p>But as I peel off the layers of this digital world, the question echoes, "What is going down in this virtual hell?"</p>

<p>The answer is complex and multifaceted, urging us to introspect and navigate this interconnected terrain with a discerning eye and a grounded sense of self.</p>

<h2><strong>Instagram as a cult of aesthetics</strong></h2>

<p>As I log into Instagram, I can't help but notice how this social media app is nothing but a quest for flawlessness, cultivating an obsession with aesthetics.</p>

<p>People are competing to present a picture-perfect version of their lives. The pictures are first carefully selected and then enhanced with artistic filters.</p>

<p>Soon enough and unconsciously, the same Instagram users carry around with them a weight of societal beauty standards.</p>

<p>And then comes the creeping monster which bites the most gullible ones first. It fuels their struggles with self-esteem and body image.</p>

<p>The heavy burden of comparison with influencers and celebrities only ends up in feelings of inadequacy and envy.</p>

<p>As a result, X has fostered an environment where divisive opinions and misinformation spread like wildfire. It hijacks meaningful discourse and stifles constructive conversations.</p>

<p>The more I research on this, the more I confirm, said my friend I mentioned earlier, as we wrap up our conversation.</p>

<p>As social media continues to wield a powerful influence over society, it is imperative for us to reflect on the direction these platforms are taking us.</p>

<p>Instagram's cult of perfection and X's glorification of mindless expression contribute to the erosion of critical thinking.</p>

<p>Though, not everything is lost.</p>

<p>Undoubtedly, at times, the platform serves as a tool to air the right message and give voice to the voiceless.</p>

<p>For instance, my journalist friend a couple of days back used X to expose her neighbours who thrashed her parents over a parking dispute in the Indian capital Delhi.</p>

<p>However, more often than not, social media leads to unintended consequences. It lacks empathy and genuine human connection.</p>

<p>As individuals, we need to redefine our relationship with social media.</p>

<p>Embracing imperfection and authenticity on Instagram can counteract the relentless pursuit of an unattainable ideal.</p>

<p>Moreover, engaging in thoughtful discussions and supporting meaningful content on X can help foster an environment that promotes learning and empathy rather than senseless banter.</p>

Little did I know that the siren calls of these virtual realms can seep through the tiniest of cracks. As time went on, I, too, found myself wandering down the enticing rabbit hole of social media. The constant buzz of notifications and the allure of endless scrolling began to grip me. Now, as I reflect on that moment in the classroom, I realise the profound irony of my self-assured response. As I continue my path in the media world, I carry with me this wisdom - The ever-evolving digital landscape demands vigilance and a mindful approach. But as I peel off the layers of this digital world, the question echoes, "What is going down in this virtual hell?" The answer is complex and multifaceted, urging us to introspect and navigate this interconnected terrain with a discerning eye and a grounded sense of self. How social media is leading us down toxic rabbit holes of endless scrolling

<p>The authorities in Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday lifted a 33-year-old ban that prohibited Shia Muslims from taking out processions during the month of mourning, known as Muharram. This ban was initially imposed in 1989 during the onset of the armed insurgency in the valley.</p>

<p>Over 25,000 Shia mourners in Srinagar participated in the procession, following the traditional route of Gurubazar-Lal Chowk-Dalgate. The decision to lift the ban was hailed by Lieutenant-Governor's administration as a "peace dividend" and a testament to normalcy returning in the region.</p>

<p>The Muharram procession commenced around 6 a.m. from Gurubazar and concluded peacefully at Dalgate around 11 a.m., covering a distance of approximately 5 km.</p>

<p>The mourners, carrying black flags, commemorated the sacrifice of Imam Hussain, Prophet Muhammad's grandson, during the 1400 years old battle in Karbala, present-day Iraq, in the Islamic month of Muharram.</p>

<p>“We have been longing and struggling all these years to take out the procession. It’s a dream come true,” media reports cited one Amir Jaffar, a Shia mourner, as saying.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Imran Reza Ansari, president of the All J&amp;K Shia Association, hailed the occasion as a "historic milestone" that represented faith and unity.</p>

<p>Prominent Shia cleric Masroor Abbas Ansari also welcomed the decision and praised the discipline shown by the Shia mourners. However, he suggested that the allotted time for the procession (6 a.m. to 8 a.m.) should be reviewed for future events.</p>

<h2><strong>Security measures&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>To ensure a peaceful event, the L-G administration put stringent security measures in place and deployed additional personnel along the procession route since 2 a.m., vigilantly monitoring for any miscreants.</p>

<p>L-G Manoj Sinha acknowledged the historical significance of the procession and hailed it as a testimony to the changing and normalising situation in J&amp;K. He expressed the government's commitment to fostering a peaceful and harmonious society.</p>

<p>Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) Vijay Kumar and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Rakesh Balwal closely monitored the event, and the J&amp;K Police deemed the decision to allow the procession as "another historic landmark".</p>

<p>National Conference (NC) vice-president Omar Abdullah welcomed the L-G administration's decision and said, “I would like the administration to take a few more right steps in the right direction to restore actual normalcy in J&amp;K. There should be no restrictions on Friday prayers at the Jama Masjid, Srinagar, and Eid prayers be allowed at Eidgah. Restrictions on Mirwaiz Umar Farooq should also be lifted so that he can fulfil his religious obligations."&nbsp;</p>
