Fox Corp CEO Lachlan Murdoch dropped a defamation lawsuit against an Australian news site over an opinion piece he said accused him of complicity in the Jan. 6 attack on the US Capitol, saying the defendant was trying to generate publicity.

Murdoch's lawyer in Australia said his client was confident he would have won the suit against online publisher Private Media and its site Crikey, but wanted to stop it from re-airing claims from a separate US lawsuit involving Fox and the events of Jan. 6, which Fox paid $785.5 million to settle three days earlier.

"Mr Murdoch ... does not wish to further enable Crikey's use of the court to litigate a case from another jurisdiction that has already been settled, and facilitate a marketing campaign designed to attract subscribers and boost their profits," the lawyer, John Churchill, said in a statement.

A lawyer for Private Media, Michael Bradley, said Murdoch had discontinued his Federal Court claim without warning and that Murdoch would pay Private Media's costs. He declined to say how much those costs were.

"It's complete vindication of their stand on the principle of press freedom," Bradley said in an email, referring to Crikey and its employees.

The decision is the second high-profile defamation trial involving the Murdoch family to be aborted in relation to Fox's coverage of the 2020 U.S. election and the Jan. 6, 2021, attack in Washington by supporters of former president Donald Trump who repeatedly claimed without evidence that his loss to President Joe Biden was fraudulent.

Fox and its top-rated cable channel Fox News on April 18 settled a defamation lawsuit by ballot machine operator Dominion Voting Systems, on what was to be the first day of a trial where Lachlan's father, Fox Corp Chairman Rupert Murdoch, had been expected to testify.

In the Australian lawsuit, which was scheduled to go to trial in October, Lachlan Murdoch had accused Private Media and four employees of damaging his reputation in a June 29, 2022, opinion piece that described the Murdochs as "unindicted co-conspirators" in the effort by Trump supporters to overturn his election loss.

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said on Friday (April 21) that all NATO allies agreed that war-torn Ukraine would eventually become a member of the intergovernmental military alliance, but the main focus was to ensure that Ukraine prevails against Russia, the news agency Reuters reported.

Speaking to reporters ahead of a meeting of the Ukraine defence contact group at Ramstein air base in Germany, Stoltenberg said that once the war in Ukraine ends, Kyiv must have "the deterrence to prevent new attacks".

"I said in Kyiv yesterday that Ukraine's future is in the Euro-Atlantic family and all NATO allies have agreed that Ukraine will become a NATO member. But the main focus now is, of course, on how to ensure that Ukraine prevails," he said.

Since the beginning of the Russian offensive in February last year, Ukraine has been seeking to be allowed into NATO. But according to Western diplomats, it remained a distant prospect.

Friday's announcement came a day after Jens Stoltenberg visited Ukraine, his first since the beginning of the war. The NATO secretary-general met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelesnky. Stoltenberg also visited Bucha and laid a wreath in memory of those who died during the occupation of the town and visited a local church.

In a joint press conference with Stoltenberg on Thursday, President Zelensky said, "Now, when the majority of people in NATO countries and the majority of Ukrainians support the entry of our country into the alliance, it is time to take the appropriate decision."

Zelensky also said that a NATO summit in July could become historic if Ukraine received a formal invitation to join.

Stoltenberg meanwhile, said, "Ukraine's future is in the Euro-Atlantic family, Ukraine's future is in NATO, all allies agree on that."

During Friday's meeting at the Ramstein air base, Ukraine pressed allies for long-range weapons, jets and ammunition. And US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin told reporters that Washington and allies would discuss providing more air defence and ammunition for Ukraine.

“Ukraine urgently needs our help to shield its citizens and infrastructure and forces from Russia’s missile threat,” Austin added.

European Organisation for the Safety of Air Navigation, also known as Eurocontrol, said on Thursday (April 20) that its website was under a cyber attack from pro-Russian hackers.

European Organisation for the Safety of Air Navigation, also known as Eurocontrol, said on Thursday (April 20) that its website was under a cyber attack from pro-Russian hackers. In a notice posted on the website, Eurocontrol said, "Since 19 April, the EUROCONTROL website has been under attack by pro-Russian hackers. The attack is causing interruptions to the website and web availability. There has been no impact on European aviation." And according to a report by the Wall Street Journal on Thursday, a spokesperson from the European air traffic control agency said the cyberattack was not affecting its air traffic control activities. "Since 19 April, the Eurocontrol website has been under attack by pro-Russian hackers. The attack is causing interruptions to the website and web availability. There has been no impact on European aviation," the spokesperson said. Another official from Eurocontrol, familiar with the situation, said that the agency ringfenced its operational systems and that air-traffic safety wasn’t at risk, the Wall Street Journal reported. The official added that systems used for aviation safety are subject to stringent cyber-protection protocols and aren’t connected to external networks that could allow hackers to access them directly. However, Eurocontrol on Thursday advised airlines not to use its online system to file flight plans due to connectivity issues and to use “other channels” if possible. Russian hacking group claims responsibility for cyber attack Russian hacking group Killnet announced on Wednesday night that it was responsible for the cyber attack on Eurocontrol's website. Sharing a post on Telegram, Killnet called for hackers to join a marathon attack on Eurocontrol. “From today, a Eurocontrol marathon is being held, lasting 100 hours,” the post said. The Russian hacking group also shared a post by another Telegram channel ostensibly run by Russian military bloggers who are covering the ongoing war in Ukraine. Quoting Killnet hackers, this post said Eurocontrol was targeted as it was linked to NATO and supported Ukraine. WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Khalil had led the team that treated Jehan for the tumour. With Jehan's condition remaining critical and uncertain, Khalil said the focus would likely shift to Noor Jehan's pen pal, Madhubala, with the hope of finding her better accommodation. "We will do what we can for Noor Jehan but really we need to move the other animal," the chief vet added. Kanwar Ayub, the director of Karachi Zoo, meanwhile, said "We will fight till the last for her recovery, and the rest is in the hands of Allah." Ayub added that the zoo was diligently following the instructions of Four Paws International for Jehan's treatment. Zoos in Pakistan have been frequently accused of disregarding animal welfare. In 2019, the Islamabad Zoo was closed after drawing international condemnation for its treatment of an Asian elephant named Kaavan. Later, the elephant was airlifted to retirement in Cambodia in a project spearheaded by US popstar Cher and carried out by Four Paws International. Andrew Lester, 84, who has been charged in the shooting and wounding of a Black teenager Ralph Yarl, pleaded not guilty to felony charges on Wednesday (April 19) during his first court appearance in the case.

Andrew Lester, 84, who has been charged in the shooting and wounding of a Black teenager Ralph Yarl, pleaded not guilty to felony charges on Wednesday (April 19) during his first court appearance in the case. Last Thursday, Lester shot Yarl twice after the boy mistakenly walked up to the man's house in Kansas City. Yarl, 16, walked up to Lester's house to pick up his siblings, who were at a nearby house with a similar address. Lester entered not guilty pleas to both counts during an arraignment in a Clay County courtroom. On Tuesday, the 84-year-old was freed on a $200,000 bond after he surrendered to police. And on Monday, he was charged with armed criminal action, which has a penalty range of three to 15 years. Prosecutors said on Wednesday that Lester fired two shots through a glass door with a .32-caliber revolver. As per Clay County prosecutor Zachary Thompson, Yarl did not cross the threshold, and it was not believed that any words were exchanged before the gunfire. However, local media, citing court documents, reported that the teenager Yarl told police who interviewed him at the hospital that Lester told him: "Don't come around here." Yarl, who was released from the hospital earlier, is continuing to recover at home. Speaking to CBS News, his mother Cleo Nagbe said, "He went and rang the doorbell. And he was supposed to stay outside, and his brothers were supposed to run outside, get in the car and they come home." "While he was standing there, his brothers didn't run outside, but he got a couple of bullets in his body instead of a couple of twins coming up, out, and giving him a hug," she added. Yarl invited to White House once he recovers Ralph Yarl has been invited to the White House once he has recovered, US President Joe Biden said on Tuesday as he slammed the shooting as another example of the country's failure to deal with widespread gun violence. Last night, I had a chance to call Ralph Yarl and his family. No parent should have to worry that their kid will be shot after ringing the wrong doorbell. We've got to keep up the fight against gun violence. And Ralph, we'll see you in the Oval once you feel better. pic.twitter.com/mPXiM1X6nK — President Biden (@POTUS) April 18, 2023 × "Last night, I had a chance to call Ralph Yarl and his family. The UK Cabinet Office on Wednesday (April 19) published British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak's register of ministerial interests, revealing his wife Akshata Murthy’s shares in a childcare agency in the wake of a parliamentary probe. On April 13, Parliament's Commissioner for Standards started an investigation into whether Prime Minister Sunak properly declared Murthy's holding in Koru Kids which could benefit from a policy in last month's budget.

According to the register, "The Prime Minister’s wife is a venture capital investor. She owns a venture capital investment company, Catamaran Ventures UK Limited, and a number of direct shareholdings."

“As the Prime Minister set out in his letter to the Chair of the Liaison Committee on April 4, 2023, this includes the minority shareholding that his wife has in relation to the company, Koru Kids,” the register added.

The list of ministerial interests also said that Sunak's own financial interests were handled through a "blind trust/blind management arrangement."

On Monday, Sunak's spokesperson had said that Akshata Murthy's shareholding in Koru Kids had been transparently declared, and opposition parties called for the prime minister to publish an updated list of ministerial interests to improve transparency.

When Sunak was the finance minister, he and Murthy faced criticism over Murthy's "non-domiciled" tax status which meant she did not pay tax in Britain on her earnings abroad. Murthy subsequently gave up the status and said she would pay British tax on her global income.
