ByteDance is pushing a new social media app in the United States as the Chinese tech giant's flagship app TikTok faces a possible ban. According to a report by CNBC late Monday (April 24), ByteDance had invited creators onto the Lemon8 platform before it officially rolls out in the US. Lemon8, a lifestyle app, is a blend of Instagram and Pinterest. The app was first launched in Japan in 2020. Citing data.ai, a data analytics firm, the CNBC report on Monday said that Lemon8 jumped 693 positions to become the second-most downloaded lifestyle app in the US in the last 30 days. Since its launch, Lemon8 accumulated 17 million downloads worldwide.

Glenn Gerstell, a senior advisor at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, said that some of the algorithms used in Lemon8 are similar to or the same as the recommendation algorithms in TikTok, which would make these apps "tremendously popular" as they feed people what they want to see and move on.

Lindsay Gorman, a senior fellow at the German Marshall Fund, meanwhile, said, "You could see this as the competitive move of a company that’s trying to expand into different consumer markets and segments with more image-based and longer-form written content as opposed to only short-form videos."

Lemon8's growing popularity comes as TikTok faces a possible ban in the US amid concerns about potential Chinese government influence over the platform. CNBC reported that the lifestyle app's links to ByteDance and TikTok will come under the radar of American regulators.

While pointing out Lemon8's success in Japan, Glenn Gerstell said that if the app gets shut out of the US market, "they have still got (millions of) people around the world who could be users of this app."

Both Gerstell and Lindsay Gorman said that Lemon8 could also serve as an alternative for content creators if TikTok was banned in the US.

However, creating another app to replace TikTok was not a quick solution for ByteDance, according to analysts. Glenn Gerstell said, “It might give them a fallback in case something gets hurt on TikTok but I don’t see it as generating a solution for ByteDance in this regard.”

And Lindsay Gorman said as Lemon8 gained more popularity, it spoke to the need for American regulators to come up with a comprehensive framework to understand "the risks of Chinese internet apps and address them before they spiral out of control."

China's ByteDance pushes Lemon8 app in US as TikTok faces possible ban: Report

Omar al-Bashir, the ousted president of Sudan, was moved from the Kober prison to a military hospital in Khartoum before fighting broke out between the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on April 15, the news agency Reuters reported on Wednesday (April 26) citing the army. According to a statement, Bashir and 30 others were moved to the military hospital on the recommendation of medical staff in Kober prison before the conflict started.

Videos circulating online appeared to show a long line of prisoners leaving the facility with bags of belongings slung over their shoulders. The whereabouts of Bashir came into question after Ali Haroun, a minister in his government, said on Tuesday that he left the prison with other ex-officials.

Al-Bashir was overthrown during a popular uprising in 2019. However, the SAF and the RSF, who together removed him from power, are now battling one another.

The warring factions agreed to a 72-hour ceasefire starting Tuesday. However, on Wednesday, the ceasefire remained fragile after there were reports of fresh air strikes and paramilitaries claimed to have seized a major oil refinery and power plant.

Darfur inhabitants fear that the ongoing conflict could reawaken war in the region. Reuters reported on Wednesday that as the unrest began in Khartoum, the violence quickly spread to Darfur. Residents reported pillaging, ethnic reprisal attacks, and clashes between the SAF and the RSF in various population centres around Darfur.

Will Carter, the head of the Norwegian Refugee Council in Sudan, said, "Whichever way the current battle for Khartoum goes, we expect a bloodier conflict now in the Darfur region - more armed groups, more weapons, deeper enmities."

As per figures from UN agencies, at least 459 people have been killed and more than 4,000 wounded in the ongoing conflict. Two women was killed and 10 other people were injured after a Russian missile struck a museum in the centre of the eastern Ukrainian city of Kupiansk on Tuesday (April 25). Rescue workers dug through mounds of rubble to retrieve the bodies after the museum was hit. Hitting out at Russia, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky posted on Telegram that "The terrorist country is doing everything to destroy us completely."

The president's chief of staff Andriy Yermak and the regional governor said the damage was caused by a Russian S-300 missile, the news agency Reuters reported.

Taking to Telegram, Yermak shared a video showing the half-destroyed Kupiansk Local Lore Museum and military and police on the site of the strike. The museum's windows were smashed and a section of the wall and roof were destroyed.

Kupiansk, which had a population of 26,000 before the beginning of the Russian offensive, lies in the Kharkiv region. Kupiansk was an important rail hub that was occupied by Russian forces for months.

However, Ukraine pushed them out of the city in a lightning counteroffensive in September last year that also recaptured the cities of Izium and Balakliia.

This missile strike at the museum comes as Ukrainian forces are carrying out raids across the Dnipro River. The Kherson regional administration's Deputy Head Yuriy Sobolevskiy said the raids were intended to reduce the combat capability of Russian troops who have been shelling Kherson city since being forced to retreat.

"The results will come as they did on the right bank of the Kherson region when, thanks to a complex and long operation, they were able to liberate our territories with minimal losses for our military. The same thing happens now on the left bank," the deputy head added.

Citing military analysts, Reuters reported that Ukraine was likely to launch a counteroffensive and that one of the main goals could be breaking through a southern land corridor between Russia and the Russia-annexed Crimea region.

Ukraine war: Two killed, 10 injured after Russian missile strikes museum in Kupiansk

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) observed a sensor glitch in a key instrument of the James Webb Telescope. The telescope was launched on December 25, 2021, and has been offering scientists unprecedented views into the universe beyond Earth. According to a report by the news agency IANS on Wednesday (April 26), NASA and its partners are investigating the problem with the telescope. The glitch was found during a routine performance monitoring and calibration of all 17 observing modes of the telescope.

Mission officials found out a discrepancy in data, and they zeroed in on a mode of Mid-Infrared Instrument's (MIRI) Medium Resolution Spectroscopy (MRS). The officials found that the mode was receiving less sensor throughput less than the expected amount of light -- at the longest wavelengths. No risk was seen for MIRI imaging and the instrument.

In a mission update, the officials said, "Analysis of MIRI`s Medium Resolution Spectroscopy (MRS) mode revealed that at the longest wavelengths, the throughput, or the amount of light that is ultimately registered by MIRI`s sensors, has decreased since commissioning last year."

The update said that no effect had been seen for MIRI imaging, and there was no risk to the instrument. "All other observation modes -- within MIRI and each of Webb`s other scientific instruments -- remain unaffected," it added.

The Webb team would continue MIRI observations as planned. The team would gather all relevant ground test and flight data to fully assess the MRS performance. Further test observations would be taken to completely characterise the nature of the issue using this particular mode of observation, IANS reported.

The team said that it continues to investigate the case, identify risks and explore mitigations which would potentially improve performance. The team added that one possible mitigation strategy included taking slightly longer exposures at the affected wavelengths to increase the signal-to-noise.

This was not the first time that the MIRI faced a glitch with the MRS. Last year, the instrument had a stuck grating wheel for a few months between August and November, but MIRI was still able to observe in other modes.

ALSO READ | UAE spacecraft captures most detailed photos of Mars' little moon In a mission update, the officials said, "Analysis of MIRI`s Medium Resolution Spectroscopy (MRS) mode revealed that at the longest wavelengths, the throughput, or the amount of light that is ultimately registered by MIRI`s sensors, has decreased since commissioning last year." The update said that no effect had been seen for MIRI imaging, and there was no risk to the instrument. ALSO READ | Japan's privately-owned lunar lander that went up in a SpaceX rocket, likely crashed on moon: Company The team said that it continues to investigate the case, identify risks and explore mitigations which would potentially improve performance. Ukraine war: Kyiv working with FBI, US companies to collect war crime evidence

Residents in Haiti's capital city Port-au-Prince lynched and set fire to over a dozen suspected gang members on Monday (April 24), according to police and witnesses. In a statement, the police said that during a search of a minibus in which there were armed individuals, the police confiscated weapons and other equipment. In addition, more than a dozen individuals travelling in this vehicle were unfortunately lynched by members of the population," the statement added.

According to a report by the news agency AFP on Tuesday, witnesses said that the violence in Port-au-Prince started before dawn when gang members burst into several residential areas of the capital, looting homes and attacking residents. Dozens of families left neighbourhoods with men, women, and children fleeing, carrying a few personal belongings in bags or bundles

Speaking to AFP, a resident of Turgeau said, "It was the sound of projectiles that woke us up this morning. It was 3:00 am, and the gangs invaded us. There were shots, shots."

Another resident told the news agency that the residents would defend themselves if the gangs invaded them, adding, "We will defend ourselves, we too have our own weapons, we have our machetes, we will take their weapons, we will not flee."

The police have not specified the exact number of suspected gang members killed in the violence.

The United Nations warned on Monday that insecurity in Port-au-Prince has reached levels similar to countries at war. Earlier in the day, the UN released a report highlighting the surge in murders and kidnappings in Haiti.

The report said that armed gangs "continued to compete to expand their territorial control throughout the Port-au-Prince metropolitan area, spreading to previously unaffected neighbourhoods."

"With the high number of fatalities and increasing areas under the control of armed gangs, insecurity in the capital has reached levels comparable to countries in armed conflict," the report said.

It added that the citizens of Haiti continued to suffer one of the worst human rights crises in decades and a major humanitarian emergency.

Monday's lynching comes after days of confrontations between gang members and security agents. In recent months, the security situation in Haiti has deteriorated further with routine gun fights between the gangs and police.

The UN further said in its report on Monday that clashes among gangs and with police became more violent and frequent, claiming many civilian lives.

Haiti: Over dozen suspected gang members lynched, burned alive by residents

Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei on Tuesday (April 25) pledged absolute support for Taiwan and said that both countries were important allies. President Giammattei is on a trip to Taiwan. "I want everyone to trust that Guatemala will continue to be a solid diplomatic ally to the Republic of Taiwan and will continue to deepen cooperation in all areas," Giammattei said at a welcoming ceremony outside Taiwan's presidential office and pointed out that Guatemala and Taiwan were "brotherly countries," the news agency Reuters reported.

The Guatemalan president referred twice to the "Republic of Taiwan", rather than its official name the Republic of China. He ended his speech with a rousing "Long live free Taiwan", receiving a broad smile from Taiwanese President Tsai who thanked him.

Later while addressing Taiwan's parliament, Alejandro Giammattei continued to refer to the "Republic of Taiwan", and won a standing ovation from lawmakers with a further strong message of support, ending that speech with: "Long live Taiwan: free, sovereign and independent".

Guatemala remains one of the 13 countries with official diplomatic ties with Taiwan. Last month, Honduras abandoned Taiwan for China after asking for almost $2.5 billion in aid.

On Monday, senior Guatemalan financial officials said that Guatemala City was not asking for free money from Taiwan and did not owe a debt in the same way Honduras did, but was looking for long-term investment and trade.

Guatemalan Economy Minister Janio Rosales, who accompanied President Giammattei to Taiwan, told Reuters that his country did not have a debt problem with Taiwan but wanted more balanced trade.

"We want to have a better-balanced trade, so what we are promoting is for more investment from enterprises from Taiwan to Guatemala and to extend cooperation between the two countries. It has been a great alliance," Rosales said.

Alvaro Gonzalez Ricci, the governor of Guatemala's central bank, meanwhile, said "I think we can ask Taiwan (for things) but not free money. Maybe they can invest in some bonds of Guatemala for example, and find projects that can last for 25, 30 years, not just donations to certain projects in the short-run."

Earlier this month, Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen visited Guatemala where she offered more cooperation with Giammattei's government.

Before Giammattei's visit, China- which claims Taiwan as its territory- warned that Guatemala should not help “independence attempts” by Taiwanese authorities.

"The one-China principle is an accepted norm in international relations and a universal consensus of the international community. There is no way for Taiwan's independence. Any move that ignores the world trend and international justice and stubbornly adheres to the wrong position is doomed to failure," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said on April 19.

"We would also like to advise the government of Guatemala not to help the evil-doer and go against the international trend and the voice of the Guatemalan people for its own selfish interests," Wenbin added.

A spacecraft around Mars has captured the most-detailed photographs of the planet's little moon "Deimos". According to a report by the news agency Associated Press on Monday (April 24), the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Amal spacecraft flew within 100 kilometres of Deimos on March 10. The photographs were released on Monday. This was the closest a spacecraft had been to Deimos in almost a half-century.

Amal also observed the little explored far side of the moon just (15 kilometres by 12 kilometres by 12 kilometres). Phobos, the other moon of Mars, is almost double that size. It orbits much closer to the planet- just 6,000 kilometres away, the closest of any planet’s moon in the solar system.

The report said that Deimos' orbit around Mars stretched 23,000 kilometres out. That’s close to the inner part of the spacecraft’s orbit — “which is what made observing Deimos such a compelling idea,” Hessa al-Matroushi, the mission's lead scientist, said.

Al-Matroushi and other scientists with the UAE's space agency said the new photographs indicated that Deimos was not an asteroid that got captured in Mars’ orbit eons ago- which had been the leading theory until now.

The scientists, instead, said the moon appeared to be of Martian origin, the Associated Press reported on Monday.

Amal rocketed to Mars on July 19, 2020. Al-Matroushi said the spacecraft would continue to sweep past Deimos this year, but not as closely as it was on March 10.

Previously, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) Viking 2 came within 30 kilometres of Deimos in 1977. But since then, other spacecraft photographed the moon but from a much farther distance.

European Union's (EU) top diplomat Josep Borrell said on Monday (April 24) that the EU would keep working for a political settlement to the conflict in Sudan despite the recent evacuation of diplomatic staff and other EU citizens from the country. "We have to continue pushing for a political settlement. We cannot afford that Sudan implodes because it would send shockwaves throughout the whole of Africa," Borrell said ahead of a meeting with EU foreign ministers, the news agency Reuters reported.

"It has been a complex operation and it has been a successful operation.
